Any time I am in Puerto Vallarta with someone new, I bring them to the Signature Taco Tour with Vallarta eats. Each time, I have been introduced to a new eatery, as they change up the tour based on the days of the week, so even if you have taken the tour before, it will be a new experience. We went last year when we were in Puerto Vallarta in would like to go back to some of the restaurants we visited. This is a definite and we should do it in Puerto Vallarta! My spouse and I had such a good time in 2018 while on the Taco Tour, we decided to try another of Vallarta Eats' tours in 2019, the Untouristed tour. I booked and paid online ($55 for adults) and received confirmation emails. MEETING POINT: We were staying in the Amapas area of old town PV, so we had to Uber it to a Kiosko gas station meeting point a few miles north. Once there, we were greeted by Pilar, our friendly guide for the day. Our group was about 8 total. UNTOURISTED TOUR: We explored a total of nine eateries and attractions, definitely off the beaten path and in an area of PV we've never explored, the 5 de Diciembre area between old town and the airport. I was expecting less tacos and more of everything else but it ended up similar to the Taco Tour but just in a different area. Anyway, here's what we did. Stop one was at a taco stand called Toño that specializes in cow meats. According to our guide, they got booted from their original spot on the Malecon for some reason. We were treated to hibiscus tea water and pork cheek tacos that were insanely soft but I didn't care for the gristly bits. Stop two was at a restaurant with no official name so Pilar told me to go with Tony's Carnitas, lol. We started with rice water, something I'm not a fan of as I didn't care for its murky color and sweet flavor. We sampled carnitas tacos which were very moist but pretty bland. I usually like my foods sauce-free but they definitely tasted better with the available sauces. And instead of trying chicharron, we got a tiny amount of pork belly and a heaping of gelatinous fat, yuck. Stop three was a walk through an outdoor market with tons of fruits, veggies and seafood. Man, I wish we had something like this back home! Everything looks so fresh compared to what we have in the US. Stop four brought us to a tortilla factory, Tortilleria y Molino. Like on the Taco Tour, we received samples of freshly made corn tortillas and got to see the tortilla-processing machine in action. Stop five was a nice change of pace, a cemetery! The Panteon Municipal cemetery to be exact. Way smaller and less grand than the sprawling Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, the concept is similar with mausoleums of different styles and sizes. We had about 20 minutes to poke around. Stop six turned out to be my favorite. The restaurant's name posted outside was Los Antojitos de la Abuela but the staff were wearing Mariscos La Tia-logo uniforms. Anyway, we started out with a pineapple cilantro drink. Anyone who knows me knows that I loathe cilantro and don't care for pineapple. It was very refreshing with no offensive taste! Unlimited smoked marlin tacos came out next, very tasty and savory. Last but not least, a scrumptious red seafood soup chocked full of shrimp, octopus and marlin was the cherry on top. Highly recommended! Stop seven, bursting at the seams, was at El Taquito Hidalguense restaurant. Soursop juice was brought out, which tasted similar to lychee juice but way subtler. I was excited as we were about to enjoy some birria broth barbacoa tacos (lamb that's cooked underground). A sample of the broth was brought out and was very bland like drinking chicken broth. The lamb meat was absent of any gaminess but was so bland. We also tried a zucchini flower quesadilla which was very underwhelming due to its blandness as well. Where's the flavor?! Pass on everything. Stop eight was for crunchy (say what!) beef tacos at Birrieria y Taqueria Liz restaurant. Crunchy tacos are hard to come by in Mexico (at least for us). I was so full at the point, I had just a few bites which were good but not enjoyable due to my gluttonous stature. On top of this, we washed it down with barley water that tasted almost like chocolate milk. Stop nine, finally. Dessert time at Ice Oaxaca. We got to choose any flavor of ice cream in which I got pistachio. Creamy and delish. SERVICE: Pilar was excellent. She was very friendly and informative. Be ready to pose for numerous pics! OVERALL: IMO, the Taco Tour was better and was equally "untouristed" to me. read more

I consider myself an adventurous foodie. So naturally, I was on the fence about paying for something I could have done on my own. Could I have yelped every taco stand and did my own? Of course. But I would have had to read through hundreds of snarky posts to get a bunch of opinions. Ultimately we ended up doing this tour and it was AMAZING! I got to make my own review of each place visited while learning lots more about the area than I ever anticipated. With the tour we had gotten some first hand knowledge from locals about how each stand prepared their tacos, when they were available (some are morning stands and some evening), what made them special, a little about families and lives of those preparing our meals, etc. It was truly an intimate look into the neighborhood with an authentic dive into the local pulse, and brought me further out of where I may have adventured on my own. Our tour guide, Paz, was awesome. She was super friendly and had lots of knowledge about each stand we visited. Overall we visited about 11 spots. Some were places where you could get agua frescas, dessert, baked goods, or fresh tortillas, etc. It was a comprehensive tour to ensure a variety of great treats during your stay. One suggestion was to come hungry, which I did and normally food is no obstacle, but even toward the end i got a little full. But the food was so good, I insisted on trying everything... even the heart, liver, tripe taco at Birria Chanfay! The great thing about the tour was that we got to sample places before venturing out on our own. We visited several of the stands more than once during our week long stay and if I were there for longer would have visited them ALL again. We've been on other Vallarta Eats food tours. The Street tacos fiesta and the taste Vallarta tours in the past. Both were excellent. But I would say we didn't have a good experience on the Versalles after dark tour. I would not recommend it for many reasons. 1st every stop had more or less the same style/type of tacos. Same sauces and salsas. 2 of 4 of us got food poisoning. Those 2 ate tuna tacos. Bathrooms were pathetic and we were actually advised by our guide to not use them. This taco tour was my Puerto Vallarta food/tourist dream come trueee. I would totally recommend the Taco Tour (and their other tours) if you are looking to get acclimated with the local food and shops within walking-distance in Downtown. This was my first time in Puerto Vallarta and it was an awesome being shown around the best places by Manny, our food guide. I love it because tacos are obviously an integral part of the tour, but we make many fun stops along the way. The $55 I paid included going to the candy store, watching a man do scenic mosaic tile paintings in a store with only his finger (which we came back to later for awesome souvenirs for family), stopping by the meat shop for fresh chicharones, getting fresh agua frescas from a lady rolling a cooler, watching a man machete coconuts for us, going to the tortilla factory, and learning about some local fruits at the grocery store. Depending on the time of day and circumstances, the guides have multiple taco/food vendors they can bring people to which makes it very flexible and slightly different each time. Definitely don't be hesitant to request or ask about particular foods or stops! Manny did a great job of explaining to us the background of taco stand owners (usually families), how they made their sauces/meats, and the different types you could order. While I don't really suggest you going on the taco tour for tacos if you have a lot of dietary/allergy restrictions (there is a lot of beef/pork obviously), the guides do a great job trying to order you alternative things at each place. It's also nice that the guides give you tote bags for your things (really bright hard-to-miss touristy ones lol), water, frozen towels for a hot day, and that a lot of the taco stands reserve chairs/tables for the tour so that there is a guaranteed place to sit and enjoy all the food. The tour guides know so much about the food, city, culture. I did the taco tour before, and I'm vegetarian. Book this food tour immediately!!! Our family booked a taco tour with Vallarta Eats during our stay in Puerto Vallarta in November 2012 and this food tour was one of the highlights of our vacation!!! Our tour guide, Guillermo "Memo", was so friendly and informative and felt like family by the end of the tour. We started the tour at 10:00 a.m. on the Insurgentes Bridge (north-bound) in Old Town Puerto Vallarta. Memo brought us to local food carts that we would have never been brave enough to try on our own. We made about 12 different stops so I would advise skipping breakfast because we were all stuffed by the end of the tour! Not all of the stops were for tacos. Between tacos we stopped at a bakery, butcher shop for Pork Belly and Chicharron (fried pork skin), the local produce market and seafood market, and a local Mexican candy store. Some of the highlights of the tour included trying corn tortillas hot off the press, eating skewers of meat on the beach, and trying birria (spicy Mexican stew) we had for breakfast. Apparently it is also a cure for hangovers! Not only did we discover where the locals eat in Puerto Vallarta, but Memo also advised us on restaurants to eat at during our visit. His suggestions did not disappoint! This tour lasts about 4 hours and all of the tacos and food you eat is included in the $55 price (tips not included). The tour is done on foot so dress comfortably and skip the high heels. The 1.5 mile walk is easy, but it the sun was a bit brutal (and I'm from Florida!) so pack a hat and sunscreen! Star was a great guide. Her English is great (think Sophia Vergara). Tours are small (6 to 8) to give everyone a great personal experience. For the Tacos and More Tour you will meet near the Insurgentes Bridge by Le Bistro restaurant. Our tour lasted 3 hours and we stopped and ate at all local taco stands that you mostly won't find on a tourist map. We stopped at 6 taco stands, a quesadilla stand, a bakery, a butcher shop, 2 markets, a tortilla factory, an ice cream store and a candy store. In all, it was about 17 stops. You will find more than just good food, but you will learn more about the culture, the people, and the area. By the end you will feel like a local, you will know how to order at any taco stand, and you will never settle for Taco Bell again. Our guide knew all the vendors and if you wanted more, she was able to get you seconds. Pace yourself though. Even though you might get only half of something to try it out, that might be just enough Be sure to bring your good walking shoes and a huge appetite. My companion was full by the 4th stand and basically only tasted everything. Do not worry if you are vegetarian, etc., your guide will help you at each stand. We have birria , carnitas, octopus, shrimp, mahi mahi, marlin, and barbacoa as far as my stomach can remember. Star was very helpful and even provided us with wet frozen towels to cool us down. The morning tour leaves at 10am and you do cross some swaying ripe bridges so if you have vertigo or are not sure footed you might want to try something else. Why does this tour start at 10? Believe it or not, there are things such as breakfast tacos! So eat a very light breakfast. If the tour started at 12pm or in the evening, these places will not be open! Many might wonder about health and sickness. Neither of us got sick during or after our trip and we ATE everything. All vendors appear to exercise strict health standards, While we were offered seconds during the whole trip but we just could not eat another bite. We came back the next day for more from our favorites. This is not just any taco tour and would be hard to do yourself. We had already researched several street taco stands but none of the one's we visited were on our list of "musts". I'd list all the stands but many don't even have street addresses and some are only morning or afternoon stands that locals know. The most popular was Marisma Fish Tacos. Get the Mahi Mahi and add the special soy and jalapeno sauce. Or add the rat tail ( it is a pepper sauce with a pepper that has a long tail). Did I mention that each stop comes with a drink. I'm not a big fan of Agua Fresca in the States, but wow, the agua fresca here was amazing, Hopefully you get hibiscus! Eric (the tour proprietor) was very helpful with the reservation time and online payment via paypal. Star also helped by taking many photos and we received them in a thank you note within hours after our trip ended. One caution - you might fall in love with Puerto Vallarta and not go home. read more

We're staying at Secrets and had this tour recommended by some of the FB members on the fan page. We did the new "Untouristed" tour, which takes you around the middle class neighborhoods for classic street fare, as well as a trip to see the markets. Our guide, Raquel, was amazing. She met us right on time but didn't mind that we'd managed to bring giant cielo rojo to go cups. She even brought some sweets for my birthday! We were given bags and water. My husband can't eat pork, which is a street staple, but she was able to accommodate him. The food was mindblowing. I'm a California native and it was still the best seafood soup, chorizo, and barbacoa I've ever had. Raquel was patient, friendly and informative, both about what we were eating, and the history of where we were. The people along the route were incredibly friendly. We stopped at a tortilla factory so Raquel could explain how the staple is made, and one of the workers leaned out and handed us the corn, some raw dough, and the finished product. It's about 1.5 miles of a fairly easy walk. Bring sunscreen. Raquel provides us with frozen perfumes towels as the weather heated up. Bring an adventurous spirit. This is the real taste of Mexico, try the lingua, cheeks, and mix. Explore new flavors. Have a little room for spice. Each stop also had a different flavor of agua Fresca- lime, tamerind, horchata, etc. Finshed up with a cold ice pop. There's honestly nothing I would have changed. We had a fantastic time. read more

Wonderful tour with Fernanda. Did a 10am taco tour. Was a nice mix of history, culture and amazing food in the backdrop of a lovely city. Loved that we were traveling away from the touristy places and into the local neighborhoods and supporting local family owned businesses. Also very much appreciated that Fernanda was local and told us personal stories of some of the places we visited. The food was great. The aguas frescas were refreshing and ending with the candy shop and palletas was perfect. The tour was the absolute highlight of our trip to Puerto Vallerta. Truly an excellent adventure. We were a party of 12 retired school teachers and spouses. The food tour menu was nicely designed and Abel did a wonderful job of "herding" us around and keeping us moving. He is humorous, well versed and very knowledgeable about the origins of the different dishes. The food was outstanding and the neighborhoods were 'alive' and wonderfully vibrant. It was so unique to experience the "Old World" where you live upstairs and operate your business downstairs whether it be a restaurant, hardware store or farmacia. Interestingly enough, one of the best places we ate at was two businesses in one location....a car wash during the day and a taqueria at night. Food was great! Food was plentiful. The tour ended up being to be a bit long but that was our doing not Abels. Elderly people are slow. Vallarta Eats is a fabulous excursion and our guide was excellent! So we had to bring our "baby" back for a real meal (instead of trying to remember one through the placenta - she doesn't remember the tour at all in-utero!). It has been 10 years literally since we've been the PV together (returned once for me in 2019 for business), and we had to return to Vallarta Eats but choose the "Untouristed tour" to search for places that locals eat. Our tour guide was Abel, and maybe because it's the off-season but we basically got a private tour. It was just the 4 of us. The first place we tried had barbacoa, and despite all the food shows and docuseries I've watched, I forgot that it was lamb. Let me tell you about lamb and me. The gaminess of the lamb usually is a turnoff, but I decided to give it a try since the process of making barbacoa is time consuming. I've usually done well with long and slow-cooked lamb so I gave it a try. They gave us free cosumme, and I was thinking... uh... lamb juice? I don't know about this. The soup was very light in lamb taste (almost like essence) and not very overpowering. As a Korean, I really appreciated some soup with our meal. It really wasn't too bad for this lamb-phobe. The barbacoa taco itself was a nice start to our tour as I skipped breakfast for this. It wasn't super heavy like pork or beef. It wasn't gamey at all, and I was able to finish my taco. The next taco stand was one of those carts on the side of the street. We got carne asada and pork, I think. I could be totally be wrong. Abel was telling us that they usually serve this at night, but they're open earlier in the day for breakfast/lunch. The history of this spot was interesting. The third taco place was one of my faves. I don't want to be a typical American, but wow.... the chicharrones that we typically buy at the stores don't compare to freshly fried pork rinds. They put chicharrones on top of their carnitas (fried in lard mind you! so awesome!). With a little salsa, the texture of this taco was off the charts! Like I said, I don't need crunch like most Americans. I can do away with mushy food, but the chicharrones are kind of changing my mind. I might want to put this on everything! We had to buy a bag of chicharrones (purchased by the kg - great deal!). Oh, BTW, we're really healthy at home so it was a shock for my kids (12 and 9) to be served their first soda ever in the form of Mexican Coca-cola. This supposedly went well with their meal so I was fine with it - and I appreciate no high fructose corn syrup like in the crappy American version. I might be forgetting a taco, but our taco place which was what I was waiting for was fish taco. We ate marlin taco with accompanying seafood stew similar to cioppino but thinner soup. It was pretty good, but I think it was because we were soooo full by that time I didn't appreciate it as much as I thought I would. I still loved it, don't get me wrong. But I was barely able to finish it. Haha. The last stop was at the homemade ice cream place where I tried the mamey (not gamey as my autocorrect wanted to correct) ice cream for the first time. It said that it tasted kind of like sweet potato, and since I like certain types of sweet potato I thought I'd try. It's very subtle in taste, but the creaminess of the ice cream was to die for. They have very unique flavors, and we got adventurous. Maybe we'll make some of these at home if we can get the ingredients maybe from Mexican market at home. All in all, we were SO glad we did this tour like last time in PV. No regrets and Abel was super informative about the history of the restaurants. He was super friendly and we were able to ask him everything. In fact, he gave me recommendation for a seafood place (Abulon) which we did eventually patronized that was really good. BTW, we did come back to Marismas which we discovered in our 2012 street taco tour. For places we love, we always seem to come back because that taste ever disappears. It's a great way to get the lay of the land so book your tour early into your trip so you can go back to the places you liked. Our tour guide was on time, and we lucked out as we were the only 2 on the tour that morning. Everything was super delicious and we were stuffed by the end. If I could give 6 stars I would. It's not just food, it's the history, the culture. I got this tour after doing the 'walking tour' (loved it) my last visit. It was my dads 70th birthday and got him and my mom tickets for it. We loved eating the food, but also hearing about the history of this wonderful town.... I had no clue that street vendor permits haven't been issued in over 25 years! My only advice is, don't save it for the end of your trip... do it in the beginning.... you will want to know all the little hidden gems at the beginning of your trip, not the end! :) Also, this tour has 6 or less people... with the music/buses/ loudness around... The Signature tour was great! It came recommended to us by two different friends, and we highly recommend it as well. It was a great opportunity to see parts of PV and eat at places we may not have discovered on our own. The morning tour was preferred so that we had a chance to visit our favorites later on. We're still dreaming of those birria tacos. Our guide, Roman, was enjoyable to be around as we stuffed our faces and he easily answered our questions. My family and I went on the Taco tour with Brian as our tour guide and it was amazing! The tacos were the best I've ever had and everyone was so full at the end. Our tour guide was fun to chat with and taught us a bit about taco types and the city. Excellent food and guidance as we walked through the streets of this beautiful city. Abel was terrific on the tour, we had way more than enough to eat (and only had seconds at the first stop), the food was very diverse and of course delicious. We did have to brave the humidity but you don't travel to beautiful places like this to sit in an air conditioned condo. It was only two of us which I know is a bummer in regards to tip earnings but that didn't impact the quality of our tour at all. We didn't expect the cold bottle of water or the durable Vallarta Eats tote bags or that our guide would snap pictures of us at every stop. His pics were great and delivered the very next day with a very nice email that documented our entire itinerary complete with items sampled and locations. I would recommend and take another tour with this company based on this very positive first experience which I know is not unique since we learned of the tour from a friend. read more

Oh my what a great value for our taco tour. Daniella was an awesome guide, who shared local knowledge of all the businesses she took us to; from the tortilla factory, to the great street side taco vendors, to the bakery shop. She was very helpful in ensuring no cheese for my wife's tacos. I was so stuffed after our tour. Note make sure to try out the fresh churos made daily from 5:30 a 8:30 near the clock tower. Will I try it again - yes Next time I will only have one taco at each location vs two at the beginning. There is a lot of food--so pace yourself! They give us a handy cloth grocery bag and a bottle of water to carry our pastries, nachos, and candy (oh the last stop a candy store) Cheers read more

Best taco tour ever! Manny was our guide and we were so impressed! Nowhere else could we get the kind of experience that we did. We not only enjoyed being in the heart of Puerto Vallarta and away from the main tourist areas, we got an experience that we could have never planned on our own. This is by fare the best tour to take in Vallarta - we have done every one of the food and beverage tours offered and each is unique and wonderful. We live here and this is our favorite activity to share with our visiting family and friends. If you love local authentic food and tacos, then you don't want to miss this tour from Vallarta Eats! Come hungry, you will be stuffed by the end of this tour. Every single stop we went to was exceptional! Manny was our tour guide and he made us feel welcomed and was very knowledgeable. Took care of us and made sure we were always having fun. You start out pretty early because most of the places that we toured at are so good that you need get there before they run out of food. We didn't experience any issues but on our way around a couple hours later, the first spots were already closed. So it's best to get to the places you liked most from the tour if you will be coming back another day. You walk the entire tour between each stop so be prepared with comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, extra water, and sun block in case it gets real hot. Overall this was a great tour and exposes you to parts of the town that has excellent food you would not have know was there. read more
