My friend and I were on a day trip up from LA and we had a hunch Vallarta would serve good food. I'm so glad we listened to our instincts! Vallarta is a phenomenal restaurant. Our server was so nice and knowledgeable about the food and made some great recommendations. Firstly, get the Azteca soup to start. It's melding of spices is divine, a truly great soup. Don't let the hole in the wall appearance from the outside scare you. This is the best place for Mexican food in Fillmore (I've tried all of them. I'm a local.) The owners are great and always friendly. They have a variety on the menu from mariscos(seafood), sopas(soups), and standard tacos/burritos. They surprisingly have very fluffly and delicious pancakes, definitely better than IHOP a few blocks down. Good place for families too. read more

Never having been to Fillmore before, I relied on my fellow Yelpers for a good place to have dinner before the long drive home, and you steered me right. The restaurant itself is nondescript, but the service, food and margaritas are excellent. Our waiter, Hugo, is the owner's nephew and he was wonderful. He told us how he concocted several of the margaritas on the menu himself. The organic margarita was one of the best I've ever had. Hugo even showed us the bottle of organic tequila it's made with. The food was also great. I had the signature dish, chile verde pork and it was tender and flavorful. The boyfriend had a chicken/beef fajita combo and loved it as well. After reading reviews I figured since I was going to be in town I'd give this place a try. Boy am I glad I did!!! I was immediately greeted and seated. Since this was our first time I and everything looked so delish I thought it would only be fair to sip on a Margarita that they seemed to be so well known for. I ordered a cucumber Margarita and before I could turn the page to my menu Hugo was back with this amazing drink. Not only was it tasty but very refreshing. After perusing the menu I decided to go with the green chicken enchiladas. Again within just a matter of minutes Hugo returned with piping hot plates of rich tasty goodness. I died and went to Mexican food heaven. Everything from the enchiladas, rice, beans, chips, salsa, Margarita EVERYTHING was delicious. The best part was having Hugo as a server. Nice place! Had the good fortune to give this place a try a few days back, and I need to say they served one great breakfast. They make their own chorizo, and it is not only very flavorful, but there was no greasy mess left on the plate. They obviously use good quality meat when creating their wonderful chorizo. The food is great here! We have been customers for years and have always been pleased with both service and food. Unfortunately, this week before leaving town, we decided to order takeout. I asked if the order could be ready around 1 pm. I was told the order would go in at 12:45 so that it would be ready around 1. I showed up around 1:00, pid for the order, and then the order was placed. It was not ready until 1:15. It wasn't a big deal but when I got home I realized I didn't receive the drink. I called the restaurant and spoke with Heaven. I kindly requested if I could get the drink refunded. She said that she couldn't refund the entire order for a drink that, as she put it while laughing, "was only 3.70, and the order was $38." I said I wasn't asking for the entire order just the drink, to which I suggested refunding the entire order and the. re-charging it and I would provide the card info. She said she didn't appreciate me speaking to her like she was stupid. I didn't realize that brainstorming solutions to problem was an issue that would be about her. I ended up having to return to the restaurant to which the other server quickly and professionally helped me, apologized, while Heaven walked by giving side eyed dirty looks. Very unprofessional. If these are the type of people that are in the restaurant's employment, we will no longer give our business. There are many options for us to choose from, yet we always chose Vallarta. I don't see that happening anymore. read more

Vallarta is probably serving up some of the best Mexican food in Fillmore. This restaurant is family owned and operated, serving up some of the best chips in salsa around. The staff is always very accommodating and the service good. One of my favorites here is the chicken fajitas, which come sizzling on a cast iron skillet to your table, accompanied by rice, beans, sour cream, guacamole and warm tortillas. Other favorites include the chicken flautas and the chicken bowl. read more

The BEST Mexican restaurant in in Fillmore (sorry, El Pescador). The food tastes like abuelita (grandma) made it. Very flavorful, hearty portions at reasonable prices. The best deal is happy hour. For example, Monday: Three delicious tacos and an ice cold beer for $5? yummy! Note to all: I moved from Fillmore to Tustin recently and am going to make the 5 hour round trip to buy tamales from Vallarta Restaurant this holiday season. Great restaurant! A bit hard to find the front door, a nondescript door on the side with no inidication it is the entrance. Once inside we were greeted by Hugo, a very friendly and enthusiastic person who clearly enjoys what he does. The interior is clean and welcoming. The food was fantastic, we were not sure what to order and asked Hugo what they were known for. At his suggestion we ordered the Chorizo con huevos, pancakes with sausage and the huge burrito. All the food came quickly, portions were large, and tasted devine. We used to go El Pecscador just down the street. They are more expensive and the food there is not as good as it was a year or two ago. We will be back to Vallarta! read more

Beware of "inaccuracies" in the menu. Evidently, just because the menu states your shrimp fajitas come with rice, a salad, and Spanish corn, that's not actually the case??? Waitress said the manager needs to "fix" the menu. These fajitas were $18 and came with only 7 shrimp, onions, and bell peppers. That's it! Every other place I've enjoyed serves beans/rice with fajitas. On the up side, the food was fine. read more

Where to even start with Vallarta... My first time here is what has kept me coming back for years. The food, the service, the margaritas are all top notch! I hadn't been in a while so my husband and I went for dinner last night. As soon as we walked in the door we were greated with a warm smile and a hug from the best waiter we've ever had ANYWHERE... the one and only Hugo. He's the sweetest, he's fast, and he makes one hell of a Margarita... as in award winning. The cucumber margaritas on the rocks are our favorites. If you like spice like my husband does, ask Hugo for the habanero syrup. It takes the drink to another place... a place you never want to leave. The queso fundido appetizer with chorizo is how we like to start. It's so bad for you which of course means it's DELICIOUS! My husband always orders the #31, a foil pack loaded with delicious, tender seafood. And once again, if you like spice, Hugo has a chili oil that you can drizzle over it to really take it to the next level. As for me I often order the chile verde. It is so tasty... you can't go wrong. Last night though I decided to try the carnitas plate and I think I've found a new favorite. Never in my life have I had more flavorful, tender, moist carnitas... and it's one of my favs that I try everywhere, including a couple road trips to find some we've seen on food network. None of them compared to the carnitas at Vallarta. If you're passing through Fillmore or you're in the area and have yet to try them, PLEASE check out Vallarta. It is worth every penny! read more

I love this place . I love their food I have like 4 favorite items I love from the menu , Chile rellenos, shrimp cocktails , the seafood, the taquitos and much more.. I don't drink but when I did they had this bomb cucumber margarita which is really good. Everything is fresh they have taco Tuesdays. Happy hour and really good customer service. My wife & kids came here on a referral from a docent at Rancho Camulos Museum yesterday. She said it was good food & reasonably priced - important with our 4 kids. Since it was new for us, we parked & I did my reconnaissance. Clean, bright & decent menu - bingo & car was emptied. There was plenty of good seating & friendly staff & customers. We weren't that hungry so we ordered a few items - family style - a few tacos, chicken quesadilla, the obligatory burrito & I had abondigas soup. Although, it took between 15 to 20 minutes, we had some decent chips & good salsa to munch on. Once the food arrived, we dug it & it was tasty! It was all fresh, hot & authentic. Although my wife's margarita was $8 & of average size, she enjoyed it! We'll definitely be back on our next Filmore jaunt ! read more

We love Vallarta. It was so packed last Taco Tuesday that we visited the truck across the way instead. But not before I chatted with a couple ladies from the nearby assisted living place who were leaving after their first Vallarta visit. They made it clear they would NOT be back! I knew right away it was because of the noise, and explained that when you serve great food and margaritas, Taco Tuesday is going to be raucous! They complained that there was no room for their walkers, and I did note that the waiting area inside the door was stuffed with people in chairs and looked like a fire hazard. Oh well, you can't please everyone. But a bench or two on the sidewalk outside the door would serve Vallarta (and those waiting for a table) very well. Vallarta serves the best red salsa with their chips. It's the only place I've purchased the salsa to take home, because I usually make my own. But they jack up the cumin a little bit and it raises the level of the salsa to "addictive" for me. I've loved everything they serve, except for the tortilla strips in sauce with beans-- it's simply a matter of preference. I've loved everything else. We usually have the tacos or the seafood cocktails. I don't compare Vallarta with El Pescador at all. They are two different kinds of places. One a small neighborhood joint and the other a big, cavernous eatery that has its own unique attractions. They are both great at what they do, IMO, and there is room for both in my week! read more

We really enjoyed our experience at Vallarta restaurant from start to finish. Hugo is just great at what he does which bumped my 4 star rating to a 5. After we ordered a couple of carne asada tacos and a carne asada torta, we munched on their chips and salsa. The red salsa was super tasty that we genuinely couldn't get enough of it! Had an absolutely FANTASTIC breakfast here this past Sunday morning; we were driving back to LA from Ojai and stopped on a whim. From the moment we walked in the door, Hugo took utmost care of our needs and was exceptionally friendly and attentive. We're salsa drinkers LOL and Hugo kept both our bowls -- the delicious smoked-green chile sauce and the fantastic traditional salsa -- full to the brim. Chips were warm and very fresh. Breakfast was excellent; wife had the carnitas burrito and I had jamon, eggs, refried beans and the most delicious, crunchy-crisp-and-tender breakfast potatoes; those things were amazing. Next time we're in Fillmore we're definitely eating here again -- Hugo's friendly disposition and the EXCELLENT food demand three thumbs up! read more

If I could give a 0 star I would but unfortunately, I am unable. I went to this place with my father on our way to Ventura. To start the service was horrible. The food on the other hand was decent but definitely not amazing. My father and I were the only two people in the restaurant that day, it was a Sunday and around 11am. I would have given a three star but the kicker is that one of their staff is a thief. This is not a maybe but a fact. After we had eaten, we left the restaurant got in the car and noticed that my Dad did not have his phone. We must have looked in the car for two minutes then I tried calling it to see if we could hear it, maybe it dropped in the seat when he sat down. It rang until voicemail, so I called it again. After two rings, it got sent to voicemail (meaning someone made it go to voicemail). After that, it was off. I went back into the restaurant and told the waitress that we left our phone at our booth. By this time, there was another couple that were seated but their table was far from ours. When I got to our booth, the table was cleaned/bussed. So I told the waitress that someone took our phone. They called the buss boy over and he said he had not seen it. That's funny cause the waitress and buss boy were the only people in the restaurant at the time excluding the cook which we never saw and I do not believe the cook would walk the tables. So long story short, their staff stole my fathers $1200 apple IPhone. This place sucks, I would recommend to try another Mexican restaurant since Ventura County has many, many to choose from. Check it out if you want decent food, horrible service and possible have something stolen from your table. read more

My buddy had the chile verde burrito combo and I had the large chile colorado burrito. He said his was good, but mine was one of the best chile colorado burros I've had in many years. After visiting the Fillmore Historical Society Museum and antique shops, the owner at Heart & Soul recommended Vallarta before we head back to the SFV. This unassuming place really hit the spot. It was Taco Tuesday, and happy hour. I was driving so I didn't get to try one of their special margaritas but I ordered three different kinds of tacos thinking the would be tiny and more like street/party cart tacos. I was wrong. They were super filling and delicious. The others in the group loved their soups and they both raved about their combination plates. The service is great, it's not a huge place but I can tell the atmosphere must be great when it's full of happy customers. I have to thank the locals for recommending this place. A hole in the wall/mom & pop/family business is always more appealing to me, so try Vallarta next time you're in the area. It's worth the drive (or stopover before your next journey). read more
