Dr Chen and the staff are great. The only problem with my recent visit was having to wait almost 20 minutes for the periodontist.

Her staff was personable enough, but the work she did was so terrible I had to get it RE-DONE just weeks later. My new dentist was appalled that she would have allowed me to leave her office and arranged to have x-rays sent to my insurance company to explain why I had to have re-work done so quickly. The insurance company and my new dentist asked that she PAY ME BACK for the work she did. I went in for regular dental work and needed two fillings. I warned her up front that since I was a pre-teen, I have had a very abnormal reaction to numbing agents. It takes A LOT to get my numb. This is because I have a central nerve that runs VERY close to the surface. I have had multiple doctors confirm this. She said okay, no problem. When the work started she gave me one round of numbing and tried to start work. I told her, "I'm sorry this is very painful. I told you I am a little different." She said, "Oh you just need some more time for it to work." OK. She tried again 15 mins later. Again, INTENSE pain. I said, "Please, I am telling you, this is still painful." She reluctantly gave me another round and waited another 20 mins. (Mind you I am now 45 mins in the chair and nothing has been done). She tried again and I said it was better, but still could feel things. She said, "You shouldn't be able to feel this." And I reminded her for a THIRD time that I have a different physiology than many. She then leaned into me and asked, "Well I know you may not want to say this, but are you on drugs?" EXCUSE ME?!! "Well this would happen if you were a heavy recreational drug user. You should just tell me if you're an addict. That would make this easier." I was STUNNED. I had warned her prior to doing ANY of this that I have had trouble with numbness and THIS was her reaction?! It sadly bears stating, that I am a black woman... I hope that is not why she made this ridiculous and offensive assumption, but ..... "NO." I told her. "I am NOT an addict or drug user. This is exactly what I told you about before we started nearly an hour ago." "OK if you insist... but it really would make things easier." I wanted to get up and walk out, but I am now mid-drilling (she did SOME before I couldn't take the pain anymore) and I didn't know how to leave with my mouth LITERALLY mid-procedure. When she finally gave a final round of numbing agent and I could take it. But since we were so far behind she kept stopping the work and going to work on OTHER PATIENTS in the middle of my procedure. Finally 2 hours in on 2 fillings, she barely buffed my fillings and said...OK you'll have to come back another time for me to finish. The feeling in my mouth was UNBELEIVABLE. The filling was so rough I could feel my tongue was going to be rubbed raw. My jaw was ACHING (I have TMJ) from holding it open for 2 hours. And what I didn't know is that her work was so harsh that my gums would recede. They are STILL (a year later) not normal and I have to have my new dentist put a protective sheath around them every 6 months or so to prevent pain because my gums have never been normal again around those teeth. My new dentist is lovely. She Immediately LISTENED when I told her about my issue with numbing and I have NEVER had a problem again. When she saw the work Dr. Nguyen had done, she was so disturbed she said she wanted to make sure she documented the HORRENDOUS work she did so that it could be corrected without me having to pay out of pocket. (Insurance companies will not pay for duplicative work in the same 6 month period without documentation.) The insurance company agreed to pay -- process that. I asked my new dentist what I should do about this. I was traumatized, discriminated against and my teeth were REALLY messed up. She said the only thing I could do would be to ask for the portion of the work I paid for to be returned. When I called Dr. Nguyen's office to explain. Her staff was again, kind but all I received from her was a folded blank piece of paper in the mail from Advanced Dentistry, with a check for $248. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE Dr. NGUYEN YOUR BUSINESS. DO NOT TRUST HER WITH YOUR DENTAL HEALTH. PLEASE don't be me.

I will not be returning to this clinic under any circumstances. I was referred there by my primary…read moredentist for evaluation of a single gum above an implant that appeared to be in slightly suspicious condition, and the staff treated me as if I had been referred for total neglect of my mouth that was going to require comprehensive treatment. They obviously had not read the referral from my dentist. The ambiance of the clinic was highly unprofessional, beginning with the high energy bumpety-bump music they had blaring over their PA system, in contrast with the soothing music that most clinics play in an attempt to put their patients in a calm mood. The receptionist began by giving me a big spiel about how the clinic had me cornered and how I was not going to get out of paying for whatever treatment I was going to need. I ended up being charged around $550 AFTER insurance for a bunch of X-rays, deep cleaning of a single gum and a recommendation for no further treatment, $200 of which I was required to pay up front before they would even see me. The nurse, Minnie, kept asking me the same questions I had already answered in their extensive on line questionnaire after considerable research in my records, and I repeatedly told her that she was wasting everybody's time by insisting on asking me these same questions when I did not know the answers off the top of my head, and that if she wanted correct information, she was going to have to refer to the answers I had submitted on line. After taking my blood pressure, she treated me to a lecture about how blood pressure can be elevated when one is at the doctor's office, as if this had been the first time I had ever visited a medical clinic (I am obviously no spring chicken). When she started singing to the bumpety-bump music, I thought it couldn't get any worse until I was sent to the hygienist, who set the tone for her portion of the visit by "thoughtfully" asking me whether I brushed my teeth, and if so, with what. The entire staff was unbelievably condescending, and I was made to feel like a juvenile delinquent being referred to a probation officer rather than a valued patient being referred for medical treatment. Dr. Zhu himself was super friendly and professional, both in my initial visit and in the followup visit, and he gave me an evaluation of my condition that I thought was eminently candid and honest. l could not believe the contrast between his professionalism and the slum-like demeanor of the clinic staff. My gut reaction was that he needs to join a different clinic. I reported my experience to my regular dentist, whom I highly respect (in contrast with the staff of this clinic, who appeared to think that she was a hack), and she was deeply apologetic and thanked me for my feedback. This was not her first choice for a periodontal clinic to refer me to, and I can see why. She only made this referral after I requested a clinic that was closer to my home than the clinic where she initially wanted me to go. I told her that after what I had been through, I would go any distance to avoid Northwest Periodontics and Implants if I should ever again need evaluation by a periodontist, and that if her own staff behaved like the staff of Northwest Periodontics and Implants, I would immediately jump ship and seek out a different dentist.

In early July I'd a tooth pain that could not be calmed with Advil or Tylenol. My regular dentist was out of the country on vacation. A Google search of dentists in the Renton Highlands directed me to Dr. Salazar's practice. I telephoned their office and explained my woe to Jennifer, to which she scheduled me see the doctor that very morning. ( thank you, Jennifer) Upon his examination of my X-ray and an inspection, Dr Salazar determined I was in need of a root canal. The team at Highlands Family Dental Center not only recommended a specialist ( East Hill Endodontics ) but they actually telephoned them on my behalf and scheduled my appointment for me ( this was a level of customer service I'd not experienced from any physician's office previously). The root canal completed ( to note, if you are in need of a root canal, I highly recommend East Hill Endodontics), I was then quickly scheduled for the crown prep appointment. This appointment was long ( as crown preps tend to be ) yet it was also quite interesting, watching Dr. Salazar and his assistant, Emily, work in tandem, preparing the tooth, molding the crown and creating the temporary. Their actions together were a very well rehearsed choreography. Fast forward just a few weeks and I am enjoying potato chips as I type this review. My dental coronation ( crown) complete, no discomfort, no pain. I am pleased and impressed with Dr. Salazar and his team. They were empathetic to my plight and went above and beyond to help me. To they I offer my most sincere thanks. Before this missive crosses the word-count from review into novella, allow me to close................
