In October 2022, my dog was euthanized at this clinic by Dr. Sophia Kaluzniacki, DVM, in what I…read morebelieve was an inhumane manner. We filed a formal complaint with the Arizona State Veterinary Board following this incident. That morning, we had a euthanasia appointment scheduled for the very beginning of the day, right when the clinic opened. We arrived 10 minutes early, but no staff were present. We were forced to wait an additional 20 minutes past opening time while my dog continued to suffer. When a staff member finally arrived, I brought my dog inside and handed him over. The staff member immediately assumed he was already deceased and began placing him into a bag while he was still alive. I realized what was happening and yelled that my dog was still alive and that we were there for a euthanasia appointment. She then repeatedly apologized, stating she had not realized he was still alive. This was an extremely heartbreaking and traumatic moment. We were then taken into a room with Dr. Kaluzniacki. During this time, she made inappropriate and distressing comments about my dog, stating that he smelled and looked "gross" because he was passing from liver and kidney disease. Dr. Kaluzniacki also assumed my dog was already deceased and did not check his pulse or otherwise confirm whether he was alive. However, he was still alive. Under veterinary standards and state law, if an animal is alive and capable of feeling pain, they must be fully sedated before euthanasia medication is administered. Medication is only injected directly into the heart if the animal is already deceased. Despite this, euthanasia medication was injected directly into my dog's heart without any prior sedation. At that time, my dog still had a heartbeat, his eyes were following me, and he made a sound indicating distress, making it clear that he was experiencing pain. It was then checked and confirmed that he was still alive. Dr. Kaluzniacki realized her mistake and left the room to retrieve sedation medication. She administered it through his paw, but by that point, he had already passed away. Based on my experience, I strongly caution others against bringing their pets to this clinic!! --------------------- Update Responding to Sophias comment 2/3/26: This response is incorrect, and I need to clarify several factual points. My dog was not deceased when we arrived. He was alive, breathing, and responsive. This was witnessed by two individuals who were present in the room for the entire appointment. Additionally, I have dated photos and video from the drive to the clinic showing my dog alive with his eyes blinking on the morning of this incident. In the exam room, the assessment of whether my dog was alive was rushed. No thorough confirmation of death was performed before euthanasia solution was administered directly into his heart. At that time, my dog still had a heartbeat, his eyes were tracking me, and he vocalized in distress. Sedation was not administered prior to the intracardiac injection. Sedation was retrieved and given afterward, which was acknowledged at the time. Regarding the complaint: a report was filed with the Arizona State Veterinary Board. The matter did not proceed to a hearing because we ultimately chose not to attend in person due to the emotional toll of reliving a highly traumatic event and the logistical burden of traveling from Tucson to Phoenix. As a result, the case was closed administratively not because testimony was heard or evidence was weighed in full. I am sharing this to accurately document my experience and to correct the public record. What occurred was deeply traumatic, and I stand by what I witnessed that day.
