My friend had recently posted on Facebook about the beautiful home send-off of her best feline friend of 20 years, and before that I thought the only way was to make those soul-crushing car rides and have it done in a place that usually scares them. We decided that calling someone in to do it in Spatz's favorite spot by the window where she'd doze off while watching the constant action at the bird feeders would be perfect. Dr. Beth was professional, explaining each part of the process beforehand and during it, asking permission between each step and giving us all the time we needed to process each one. While Spatz was whacked out on the sedative, Dr. Beth made a lovely casting of her paw print as a keepsake and offered to snip a lock of fur, which we declined to do. When she confirmed the deed was done, she expressed her condolences and discreetly slipped away to allow us to grieve privately as a family. Everything she did for us was perfect, and we're so grateful to have been able to give Spatz that one last gift of drifting away painlessly in her sleep with the assistance of a compassionate soul. It's a god-awful thing to have to say goodbye to someone that's a cherished part of your life, but I'm absolutely convinced that doing it at home is the most wonderful way to do it - both for your animal friend and for sparing yourself the agony of seeing how afraid they are at the clinic so soon before they go and being helpless to stop it.

In the past, I was late canceled and no showed 3 times in a very short time span and I still stayed. Over 10 years there I did have some good Vet care experiences. More recently my young male cat diagnosed with a spindle cell tumor. I was left a Voice Mail over a holiday weekend of this horrible information. When I called the next day it was made clear I would be getting no follow up care until Tuesday as the Vet was out over a holiday weekend. The call was not coordinated with anyone. What happened going forward that next visit was awful. Over next few weeks there was a pain issue and things went from bad to worse...... When I made direct complaints about end of life care to the practice manager, and previously other staff, I was told how wonderful they really are and how other clients gave them flowers after their pets were euthanized. That was it for me. After talking with the practice manager, I notified the clinic that I would just transfer all my pet care, I received a response a week or more later and was told my pets would receive no more care or meds to sustain me until my intake visit at a new clinic. All of the other pets had current wellness exams. Before telling me this via email they already inactivated my pet account so I knew at that time I had to get moving faster and face additional expense with new wellness exams. I saw how the clinic seem to minimize their role on client's complaints on google reviews so I am leaving detail here. These were MY experiences and any response does not change them.

The vet tech also provided me with information on financial assistance grants and things if I needed it and they even went above and beyond and clipped her nails and showed me how to properly clean her ears. I have been going to this vet clinic since 2009 with my golden retrievers and have really enjoyed Dr. Lowell Wickman as my vet. Within the last month, my golden retriever had an issue that required a urinary analysis which found bacteria. I was called and asked to bring in my dog to be checked further. My daughter came with me to help ask questions and we met with the other veterinarian Penny Williams. She looked at my dog and then never shared any response except for that we need to have X-Rays done. My daughter asked a few questions about why the X-Rays were necessary. Penny took offense to these questions and shared "She has had a very bad week and was not wanting to deal with people like us." She then stated that she would test our dog and then asked us to leave. I was shocked that we were asked to leave when my daughter had not said anything demeaning or out of line. The technician (Joann Baneck) looked shocked as well and she handled the rest of our time at the vet since we did have the X-Rays and she did a great job. Penny never came back to share the results and never came back to apologize or explain why this happened. Joann (technician) returned and shared the results from the X-Ray and shared the treatment and next steps. I then called the vet clinic and requested to speak with Dr. Lowell Wickman since he is the owner. I was told he was not available and they would have him contact me. After over a week had passed, I called again and shared the same request. I was then called by the Office Manager (Jill Wenzel) and she shared that I would have to speak with her instead of Dr. Lowell. I believe Jill's mind was already made up about this situation before she would let me share why I wanted to speak with Dr. Lowell. I gave her all the details of what happened and the response I was given was minimal and that Penny has never acted like that. I asked if I was still considered at fault and she stated it was my tone and that Penny took it offensive. I asked if Joann (technician) said the same and never received an answer. Jill then stated that she would be helpful in gathering my information that can be used to find another veterinarian clinic. I am just shocked that I have been with this vet clinic for 17 years and was so disappointed that a "bad week" for Penny treated my daughter and I so poorly.

When we got home, I was informed that we had already purchased the flea and tick medication a month ago. I called to see about bringing the medication back that was still in the bag, and with the receipt that was about an hour old. I was told that I would be refunded the money to the card. When I arrived the lady, that I won't mention by name, informed me that I could only have a store credit. We live about 25 miles away and would like to go to a closer vet for routine visits. The in- store credit was a retention tool to force us to come back to them only. I decided that I would rather donate the medication to a friend or someone that needs it rather than be lied to and forced to go to a business that won't honor what they said they would do. You can sheer a sheep for life, or you can skin them once. This proverb fits Wolf River Veterinary Clinic perfectly! My husband and I just adopted a dog here 3 days ago, and truly believe that, if we hadn't taken him home that day, he would not be alive now. The dog was neutered on Friday, shipped from Kentucky to Wisconsin on Friday or maybe Saturday, and up for adoption on Sunday, when we found him. He wasn't on any pain medication, nor did he have an e-collar to prevent him from licking his incision, which looked like it had been stitched up by someone with absolutely no veterinary training. He was at least 10 pounds underweight, and he desperately needed bathing. By Tuesday the sutures had popped open and he had a nasty infection, requiring a very expensive surgery. Testing before surgery revealed that he had pellets from a BB gun in one leg, had slight pneumonia, and has indicators of Lyme disease. None of this was disclosed when we adopted him. As another reviewer said, the $400 adoption fee (which is considered a "donation" and is non-refundable if you return the pet) would be fine if the pets were properly cared for and if all medical conditions were disclosed. It seems that the shelter owners want to get as many animals in and out as quickly as possible, with minimal investment in their care. In fact, the woman who worked with us said that they do not have a veterinarian on staff. As far as the facility: there was a strong smell of urine when we came into the building, and there were quite a few flies around. We didn't see where the animals are kept, but were told that all the dogs were in one area during the day, with access to go outdoors, and that at night they were in kennels, two or three to a kennel. Outdoor areas had privacy fencing so we couldn't see what they were like.

When we got the dogs, they seemed fine and healthy but unfortunately all three were exposed to parvo before making the trip to Wisconsin. When we chose to rescue rather than purchase from a breeder, we knew there were risks involved, especially rescuing a puppy who was too young to have had all of his shots yet. Jim and his crew stood by our puppies 100% and did everything in their power to bring the pups back to health. Two were treated at the rescue free of charge (ours included), and we firmly believe Jim saved their lives. During the process, he updated us twice daily and was available all times of the day and night once we brought Jack back home to answer questions about what was "normal" during parvo recovery. It's clear he is truly in this to help save dogs, and he saved ours. We are so grateful and can't speak highly enough about our experience. So many of the negative reviews feel really unfair. When you rescue, you are bringing home a dog from a high population area who has been exposed to lots of different environmental factors. To expect a blank slate is unrealistic. Saving dogs takes work, and we knew that going in to the experience. To Jim and everyone at NEW Paws, thank you SO MUCH for bringing our amazing dog into our life. He fits into our family so perfectly, and we can't imagine a life without Jack. He's truly one of our pack and has brought so much joy to our home.
