I wanted a burrito and I wanted it good, and this establishment was so disappointing I actually ate 1/4 of my burrito and did not bother continuing. Stopped in for lunch yesterday and had the chicken enchilada suiza comes with rice and black beans covered in salsa verde with just enough spice to tingle your tongue but the crema cools you down right away. Came here on a whim last night to try some new dinner spots in the neighborhood. This place was NOT good. I asked if they served frozen drinks and all the waitress remarked was that you couldn't drink outside as opposed to the inside. If you don't understand what someone is asking don't just act like you did? The food: It was all very bland and I feel like they just tried to mask the blandness by making the food spicy. Also there are no warnings for the spice - (I don't deal with spicy food very well so I make sure I'm not ordering anything spicy) The sauce was bland. The chicken tacos were specially bland. And spicy. The enchiladas were also... Bland and spicy. I didn't finish my tacos and I feel like a caring waitress would've asked me why I didn't even remotely finish my food, but this one I guess just lacked waitressing 101. 5 staring this as *MY FAVORITE MEXICAN RESTAURANT* Free chips and salsa, huge portions, margaritas, amazing amazing brunch and dinner options, and I love the classic Mexican music. Let me tell you about their beans. I am not a fan of beans, in fact I generally hate beans. But, Vamos Al Tequila beans somehow transcend what other beans could ever hope to become. They are so good that I have to actively stop myself from eating them after I'm full. Get something here that comes with beans. It might be just a bit pricey, but you certainly get what you're paying for. I always leave feeling stuffed or having to take food back home. Everything I've tried is delicious and amazing except for a few dishes that were just a bit too spicy for me. My current favorite so far is the California Omelet on the brunch menu. Everyone should read the reviews that talk about how bad the service is, because it is not only awful, but they try to cheat you as well. I was here on Cinco de Mayo with a large group of friends. We order with this one server lady (whose picture I uploaded here on yelp), who was incredibly rude to my friends. I understand that it's Cinco de Mayo and there were many people there, but my friends did nothing wrong and they didn't deserve to be treated so awful by this waitress (example: friend asks what exactly comes on the tacos, her reply: "You know how to read its on the menu"). The final straw was this: when the bill came, one of my friends noticed that the price for the vodka she had was much higher than the one she ordered. When she asked the waitress, the waitress argued "We didn't have the one you asked for so we gave you this one." (wtf?) My friend argued back saying that if they didn't have the vodka she ordered she should have been told so, and not have another one (especially of higher price) given to her without her permission and knowledge. After going back and forth a few times, the waitress then said "Fine! I will charge you an automatic 25% for gratuity then!" (wtf???) What kind of awful, cheating and slimy service is that -- for no reason at all? And if my friend wouldn't have gone over the bill she would have never noticed. This place is absolutely awful. After this happened I went to one of the other waitresses to tell her what happened and to speak to the manager. I was told (1) We can't give you the name of the offending waitress (2) We can't give you the name of the manager (3) You have to come back another day when the manager is in. I got a take-out order and this place still gets 4 stars, that's how much I was impressed. Walked in the other day as I was looking for yet another new spot to grab lunch in Greenpoint/Williamsburg. Small place with a nice little bar but it didn't feel cramped at all and had a cozy, authentic Mexican feel to it. A couple people at the bar and a party seated at a table all had a big bowl of chips and salsa and pretty big portions, whether it was a salad or a burrito. The menu was pretty big and I only had a short time to order something and get back to the office so I quickly browsed some of the healthier salad options; ended up getting a Panchito Wrap (grilled shrimp served with avocado, red onions, tomatoes, poblano peppers and oaxaca cheese) w/ a side salad topped w/ carrot dressing. The portion was more than enough and as good as the whole wrap tasted, the flavor of the shrimp really stood out to me, the marinade and way it was grilled just overtook the whole wrap and in a really pleasant way. The salad was pretty boring but the carrot dressing had a great flavor and I ended up using a lot of it on the wrap. If I was this impressed with a random wrap as a take-out order, I'm sure their more popular menu items taste great when eaten hot and fresh in the restaurant. Also, the woman behind the bar who took my order was older and so kind to me and my friend; can't see how people have run into unfriendly service here before. read more

But the service is horrendous!! Came in today for lunch and the server completely ignored us. When she finally came over she had nothing but an attitude. If you want a burrito filled with two handfuls of oregano, and a watery soupy mess, get theirs. I couldn't even taste anything else. Oregano soup in a soggy tortilla. There were no beans but a ton of water from the beans, and a ton of rice. It was horrible had to throw it out. I have the worst headache now. I got a steak buritto, but couldnt even eat the steak because of the oregano. To top it off when I called them to let them know it was overpowering and all I can taste is the spice, the lady yelled at me. I was charged $14.50 and I'm pretty sure it isn't that expensive either. Vamos Al Tequila serves authentic Mexican food of such distinction that it truly doesn't belong in the same category as other local "Mexican" joints like the grubbily-delicious Caleixco or the consistently revolting Papacitos. Expect massive portions submerged in flavorful mole or doused with intense habanero sauce. The service here operates a leisurely pace, so if you're in a hurry, go elsewhere. The mixed drinks are somewhat overpriced, but thrifty boozers can find comfort in the beer-and-shot combinations. The price of the food itself is fair but not cheap, which might come as a surprise given the somewhat dingy decor. Other Yelpers have strangely commented that Vamos Al Tequila appears to be owned and run by "actual" Mexican people. While I don't see how this is pertinent to a review of the food itself, the implied authenticity of the food will not be disputed by your "actual" taste buds. read more

Best Mexican by far in Greenpoint. My boyfriend and I are from Austin, TX, where you really can't get much better Tex-Mex than what's offered there. We just returned from eating at Vamos and were entirely pleased! This is as traditional to real Tex-Mex as I think one can get here in NY. Firstly, you are served free chips and salsa when seated, this is how it should be done, and we were happy to see it was! We had the enchiladas suizas and the burrito pinto, and both came fresh and delicious and fast! Service was super friendly too. Best thing was, both were served with sour cream, guacamole, cheddar cheese and pico de gallo no extra charge! Papacitos doesn't even compare! In fact, Papacitos charges you $2 for a small side of sour cream. From now onwards, we shall be forgetting Papacitos and only going to Vamos Al Tequila!! read more

This place is absolutely everything one could ask for and more. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively with typical Mexican décor. We were seated after a short wait and our server was very prompt and politely solicitous. Our entrées were served with minimal adornment, save for the vivid green poblano sauce on my enchiladas verdes. Any special garnish turned out to be completely unnecessary as the food spoke for itself. The above mentioned enchiladas provoked a particularly New York-centric conflict in me, i.e., finding a place so good you're reluctant to share it. I could not, however, stand the thought of there being a single man, woman, or child in the tri-state area denied the opportunity to dine at such a truly outstanding establishment. Everything-- from the flavorful, delightfully chewy (probably homemade) corn tortillas, to a sauce of such complexity and nuance that it could only have been made by the hands of generations of master chefs to the top-notch margaritas -- was head and shoulders above any Mexican food I've had in the city and among the best I've had, period. Now, I've spent the review so far doting on the food. At this, point I could finish writing and this place would still be a 5+ star restaurant. But, there's more. The waitstaff and the owner were all incredibly nice and professional; the owner expressed sincere concern that my friend hadn't finished her meal (if the rest of us had had more than one margarita, I imagine we would have literally licked our plates). This place hits every single restaurant mark in the book and then goes on to impress. The prices, also, are very fair. This spot reminded me of an awesome restaurant I went to in downtown Cancun. Excellent portions of tasty authentic food cooked well. We ordered items from fish to pork, even soup. all were well prepared in house, not pre made. Service was good. Great for couples and families. I've have gone there when they still had outside seating cause there aren't too many places with outside tables in the area. THEY NO LONGER HAVE OUTSIDE TABLES. THE FOOD IS TERRIBLE. Good Mexican food in Greenpoint, the best by far especially better than Papacito's. Went here on a Thursday evening, and it was pretty empty, only 3 other tables. There were tons of people taking out food though. They promptly served us Chips and Salsa(free) which was good. The salsa was a little spicy but no complaints. I ordered the mole chicken tacos with rice and black refried beans and my wife ordered the Burrito Pinto with Chicken. She requested it with a whole wheat tortilla at no extra charge. Both were awesome, my tacos were hot and juicy, with the right amount of spice. WARNING, the 3 tacos with the rice and beans were too much, I had to take one to go. My wife's burrito was flavorful and tasty. It came with a side of guacamole which she liked. The service was quick, efficient, and the food was made to order so we had piping hot entrees. The waitress was attentive but almost hard to comprehend, however she was good. One negative, they don't have their liquor license yet so Vamos Al Tequila is a little inaccurate, lol. When they finally obtain their license, then this place will probably be poppin all night especially since its close to the bars. I'd recommend them stay open until 2am on weekends. read more

Mexican tomato soup, as others have said, is very tasty. They use creamy, ripe avocado and are not too skimpy on the medium-sized shrimp. Well seasoned with lots of onion, cilantro, and jalapeno. The fajitas a la mexicana are very well seasoned too, and the chorizo is not too fatty but not dry either. Surprisingly spicy with finely sliced jalapenos. I'd say everything (including the complimentary salsa) is spicier than the average Mexican restaurant in the US. My only gripe is the horchata-- too watery to begin with, and then they put it in a glass full of ice. You could hardly taste the cinnamon. Eh whatevs, maybe they forgot to stir the pitcher. I heart this place. Mainly because it reminds me of some of the many AMAZING and CHEAP Mexican restaurants I used to go to back in Nashville. Things to Love: Traditional cheap Mexican restaurant Mexican décor including flags and streamers. Food Network always seems to be playing on the TV. Family run - and usually the same friendly people are there every time I go. Tasty chips and salsa. Really well flavored items that are "throw-aways"at many places (i.e. beans, rice). Food prices. I don't like that some things do seem under-seasoned (almost seems hit or miss) and that the margaritas feel overpriced compared to their size & strength. That said, I think this is balanced out (see: "Things to Love"). Have been 4 or 5 times for dinner. Looking forward to trying brunch! read more

The servers were just the sweetest, nicest ever and i would go back just for them, except we had a great meal too. I had an avocado sandwich and my mr. had a salad. Both were full of super fresh veggies - seems like a rare thing in this corner of Brooklyn - plus lots of flavor. Vamos Al Tequila is exactly what every retaurant should be -- family owned, fresh food, good service, large portions and fair prices! When my hubby and I went to Vamos the other night we received excellent attention from the owner's daughter who advised on what was good and kept our water glasses filled. I highy recommend the Wrap ala Tita (can be order with a whole wheat wrap) which had just the right amount of jalapeno kick, and all of the tacos which were simple yet tasty with onions, tomato and cilantro (I loved the talapia "tacos de pescado" in particular). Sopa de mango gazpacho was also excellent. We had the flan and key lime pie for desert. Flan was great and I liked the key lime pie, but it was pretty creamy (you could taste cream cheese in it), so my friend with an aversion to milky/cheesy/creamy things wasn't a big fan. The best parts of the restaurant is truly the food's freshness and the family atmosphere, which I hope can be kept up as the business matures and gets busier. read more

Decent quickly served Mexican food but the establishment is extremely resentful of Greenpoint's recent wave of new inhabitants. Despite its name the place has no tequila beyond standard stock. The owner is irritated at any request. Threw a birthday here a couple of years ago and they couldn't have been more passive aggressive about what a burden we were. I have eaten in this restaurant several times. While the food is good, I was overcharged by the owner. Here is the story. I ordered a lunch special enchilada verde. It came with a choice of either Negro Modelo Especial or Tecante beer for $11.95. When I asked for the check I was charged $18. When I asked why the lunch special cost $18 I was told that the Enchilada Verde was not on the lunch specials. I told the waitress that indeed this item was on the lunch special menu. She finally agreed that the enchilada was on the lunch special, but I needed to have a can of beer not a bottle. I said I just told her the kind of beer that I wanted. I didn't specify can or bottle. She proceeded to argue with me again. I paid her $11.95 for the lunch special plus a small tip. (Why I even tipped her I don't know.) I also told her that I never intended to eat in her restaurant again. I have never been treated this way in a restaurant. I don't understand her actions and I would like all you Yelpers to know about this. I think the least I am owed is an apology. read more

I know people talked a lot of crap about Papacitos, but their burritos were decent, and their guacamole was tasty. That being said, I'd gone a long time without a burrito and decided to finally give Vamos a shot. MISTAKE!!! The salsa was watery and flavorless, the chips were fine, but the burritos: YAWN! So freakin' bland. The only thing that made my pork burrito sort of edible was a heavy dousing of Valentina Sauce. Seriously, if you want to pay too much for a burrito, you'd be better off waiting in line down at Calexico. Or, better yet, head on down to Sunset Park. If there was zero stars I would give them that many. I was craving a frozen Margarita and a yummy taco so I decided to try my luck here. First, the Margarita tasted like sweet water. I asked the waitress very kindly that was it possible for me to get the drink removed from my tab and order a beer instead. The look on her face when i sent back that Margarita was as if i offended her-which was not what I was trying to do. I apologized but she refused to talk to me at that point only that i had to give her my order. I order 2 tacos (1 grilled steak, 1 salted beef). They were RIDICULOUSLY spicy. I didn't even get to eat it. The grilled steak was actually grilled fat and the salted beef was burnt to a crisp. I can handle my fair share of spiciness and crispy beef but it was just all ill prepared and terrible. The beer made a great dinner since the food was inedible. read more

A great family-run, authentic, restaurant. Warm and welcoming inside. Very clean and lots of room. I've had the tacos and a torta sandwich. Both are great. The soft taco tortillas are fluffy and warm. The carnitas meat was juicy and flavorful. The torta sandwich was substantial and nice and spicy. My wife had the cactus salad, something she's never had before, but would definitely order again. They have a big menu, much bigger than usual tacos-only places. First of all, they served me a very weak literally not even 3/4 full margarita, which they charged me $8 for... before they bothered to tell me a free beer came with the lunch menu. The beer thing is awesome but would have been nice to know BEFORE I ordered my other drink and then they were wanting to charge me for chips when they were free... Despite all these things they were nice and I am willing to give them a second try just because everyone else on here has seemed to have a much more positive experience than I did. I love this place. You can tell immediately that in terms of cooking and service this is a family-run place. My only complaint isn't really a complaint so much as a desire that they'd serve more of the burritos they offer only on burrito day (usually Sunday) every day. Like I said, not a complaint. I am one of those people who requires a few simple things in a neighborhood: 1) a good coffee shop, 2) a bar with good music, and 3) a good Mexican place. Long story short, I am not sure if I have found my Mexican place yet. Here's why: We entered the place as they were having some fajita malfunction and the place was full of smoke and, ipso facto, coughing customers. We were a large group, but they were pretty good about sitting us--though it took a little long for them to talk with us and much longer to have our order taken. The good was good. The drinks were fine. Our friend was celebrating her mother's arrival and was getting a little crazy (weird for me, but awesome all the same) by buying some shots--she stood and went to their bar to order these shots (tequila and pineapple juice w a dash of Tabasco. I know. I know.). She had had a few drinks and was slightly loud but she was polite and friendly and we went up to the bar to take those shots before getting back to dinner. She tried to pay with her credit card but it appears there was a misunderstanding between her and the staff. That misunderstanding meant that her 10 dollar shots, already not cheap, became 13 each with their automatically added 20% tip and tax. And the service was just.. Fine... We felt more than a little cheated when we realized they had charged us about 150 dollars for those stupid shots that she had assumed would be 10 each plus some tip. Why would we have all stood and gone to the bar each time... If they were part of our meal..? That's a steep markup, no? Moral of the story: don't go in a group and don't order shots, but the food is decent. read more

I want to like this place - I really do. Its close to home and burritos are a main staple of my diet. Its hard to find one I don't like but I think I may have done just that. I've been four times now and the food seems a lot like all the ingredients just came out of a can, were slapped together and put in a microwave for 30 seconds. They don't seem to be at a loss for customers, though I suspect this has more to do with the drinks than the food. The neighborhood really needs a place like this. Given the kinds of restaurants opening in this area, they would have nothing to lose by stepping up their game. Until then, I won't be going back. read more
