Went here since my co-worker recommended it to me, specifically recommended me to fix my hair disaster. My previous stylist completely ruined my 'virgin hair' since I asked for a light brown and she decided to bleach my entire head (roots and everything). My co-worker told me to talk to Eileen and I'm so glad I did. I told her my situation and she asked for me to come for a consult before and when I did she told me that she could easily fix my hair. I decided for a dark brown this time since I just wanted to fix what the previous woman did to my hair. So we scheduled an appointment for me for the following week and when I came she worked her magic. She finished in about 2-3 hours and I was so shocked and so happy with the result! She is literally an angel and I completely recommend her! The only thing I dislike is how expensive it is, the price being $150. I understood the first time I went since she had to fix the mess but when I went the second time to just touch up the color I still got charged the same amount. I haven't been there in a while since I honestly can't afford it and I am letting my natural hair color grow out since I never want to dye it again. But other than that I highly recommend this place. I called and made an appointment. Upon arrival, I stood at the counter for a minute or two but all the stylists seemed busy, so I took a seat since I was a few minutes early. A few minutes later another customer comes in. She is greeted and offered a drink. They tell her if she wants to order food from one of the restaurants around they can do that for her, all the while, I'm just sitting there. The stylist comes back over to offer her some food another client ordered that they didn't want. It seems like they were ignoring me at this point. Finally, about a minute before my scheduled appointment, a gentlemen walks in and asks if the stylist with whom I have an appointment is available. He comes over and tells the gentlemen that he'll be available in just a minute as he's just finishing up with a client. They gave my appointment away to the guy that just walked in. At that point I was just shocked. It may have been a misunderstanding, but it really seemed they ignored me compared to the customer that arrived shortly after, then they gave my appointment away. When my long time hair stylist moved to a salon 45 min across town, I knew it was time to break up with her and find someone new. Thanks to Yelp Elite, Pam H., for steering me towards her hair guru, Cara. I've already gone to her 2x and have been happy with her both times. Vamp is a nice, clean space in the Thornton Park District -- located near the roundabout across from Graffiti. When you walk in , there is usually someone there to greet you . I've never had to wait long. I do appreciate that Cara has always been on time with her clients and if she has one when I arrive, she finishes up just in time for me. She is great with time management and is able to get me in, do a mini consultation, mini scalp massage, shampoo, cut and style and a little over an hour if that. Both times I have gone to her with absolutely no clue what I want to do as I'm pretty simple and low key. When I've explained what kind of styles that I like, she is always on the same page with me and shows me looks that she has in mind. Conversation also flows and there's never any weird awkwardness which is super important to me. She doesn't use too much product on me and has never pushed products for me to buy. But I'm sure she would happy to make suggestions if asked. They do sell hair products here but I didn't catch the brands. Just a note-- there isn't a set receptionist here. It looks as if each stylist is responsible for their own bookings. So if you call the salon and request a specific stylist, I'm sure you will get their cell number ,at some point. to make appointments directly . read more

Vamp has been revamped! The new location in Thornton Park is easily 3 times the size of the old salon. There are more stylists to choose from as well, all with their own unique style and flair. Nothing but high quality here! Rebecca styles my hair, no matter what crazy requests I come up with. She's awesome. Parking can be tight in Thornton Park, but they've got a small lot in back. I have followed Cara around from salon to salon over the years. She is truly amazing! I am so glad she made Vamp her home, as this salon is gorgeous and conveniently located in Thornton Park. What's cool about this salon is each stylist is their own entity. So you book your appointments directly with them. The salon is open seven days a week, which is great for those of us who are 9-5ers, allowing flexibility for scheduling. When you walk in you are greeted by your stylist, not a receptionist. The salon is decorated in a cool South Beach style, and the music is always fun and not too overpowering, so you can really relax here. I love getting my hair shampooed under the chandeliered canopy! I can't say enough good things about Cara. She is one of those stylists that you can just sit down in her chair, and she just knows what to do with your hair. I never have to give her much direction or worry that she doesn't understand what I want, and I always leave feeling like a million bucks. She uses great products that are not harsh or contain too much of the bad stuff, and always has tips on how to style my hair at home. read more

I've been telling everyone how much we like Kevin, referred to me. It's clear that Kevin isn't the only one with a good following at Vamp. The stylists know their customers, but what's really nice is that everyone in the salon is always inclusive. So many salons that are filled with their "regulars" ignore new or infrequent customers. Not here. Everyone is part of the conversation. Re Kevin specifically,he's reasonable and handles a range of hair types as creatively or as conservatively as you like. He quickly picks up on the look you want and makes great suggestions. Last time I went, he gave me a full bottle of product that he wasn't using anymore, for no charge! Was going through some issues with a previous stylist.. friend referred me to kayla. Spent about three hours talking to her via text message and voice messages, she pretty much swore me up and down that she would take care of my hair for me for my birthday weekend. Told me to come in the next day for a consult, I was physically at the salon and she was telling me that she's gonna take care of me on Wednesday since she had no clients, and to text her when I get home so we can set up a time for me to come. I texted her when I got home and she said she's gonna go grab the supplies for my hair right now. Didn't hear back from her for 2 1/2 hours? She then proceeds to text me and tell me that she doesn't feel comfortable working on my hair with the condition it's in and she'll refund me my money. I was FURIOUS!!!!!! At this point she wasted my time and gas! Something she could've told me 4 hours ago when I was PHYSICALLY AT THE SALON!!! Literally had a mental breakdown because now I have to again, find somebody else who wants to do my hair and I have 48 hours to fix it!! The place that I went to today the stylist that I had.. was confused by Kayla's words since she said the things that she did about my hair. This new stylist I went too achieved my goal and pretty much told me that what I wanted could be done! AND I was in at 930 am and was done by 12:45pm!! I then texted kayla personally and showed her a video of my hair and thanked her for bailing on me last minute because now I have somebody that did everything that she said that she couldn't do. She texted me back all smart mouthy and said "there is no reason this text should even be in my phone right now." I texted her back and said there is a reason for it to be since she pretty much wasted my time and gas. She has now blocked me off her personal Instagram page and her business page. I really like the laid back atmosphere at Vamp. It's not loud or snooty, it's just a cool place to hang out and get your hair done. I LOVE JAY! My hair is always amazing when I leave his chair. Do not be fooled by the groupon coupons. A few months ago, I called and made an appointment with the owner for a haircut, and highlight. The owner called me and said she cannot cut my hair but her husband who also works there can. Since I was using the coupon and I didn't know either one of them I said Ok. And that was the biggest mistake I made. The guy (the owner's husband) had no clue as to how to cut my hair or color. He asked if he should cut first and then color?? I knew right there that he wasn't experienced at all. He then chopped about 3 inches of my hair and said we don't need the extra hair.. In mixing the color for highlight, he kept on asking other stylists if his mixture was right. After 3 hours (and I'm not exaggerating), the highlights did not go through. I have brown hair, and wanted very light highlights, not a single strand of highlight!! He wanted to do it over again...It was so bad, that I asked him if he had a license, to which he replied yes, our salon has one. At that point, I politely told him I did not want him to work on my hair and I asked to leave. He was very sorry and said let me at least cut your hair!! I walked out of there very quietly since I did not want to embarrass him...Even though I did not pay for anything, it was the most horrible hair experience I have ever had. Never again would I want to go cheap when it comes to my hair. PS...despite what the husband did, I never got a call from the owner apologizing... read more

There's only one stylist in on a Saturday, so there's no availability for walk in's. However, she did answer the phone and she also made phones calls for me to try and find something. She didn't have to do that, and she called me back to let me know. She was also willing to refer me to another salon, which was gracious. But why do salons say they take walk in's when they know they don't have anyone there available? This is the fifth one I've tried today, they all say they take walk in's. read more

Love, love,love...the way Bobby colors my hair! I was referred to Bobby from a good friend about a year ago and was honestly hesitant to try a new stylist especially because I found that many of the stylists I have gone to in the past did not seem to be experienced or comfortable in dealing with the texture of Asian hair. (not to mention, if I ever tried to get my hair colored, I always left looking like an orange-rusted, attempt to be blonde-Asian). Anyhow, Bobby has this awesome talent to really listen to what you want and, to the tee, make it just as you had pictured it for yourself. No B.S. It's actually been the first time that I get continuous compliments about my hair. Can't believe this Asian girl can pull off the light hair colors wihout looking cheap- haha! Just want to give recognition where it truly is deserved. He is also such a warm and kind person...oh, AND hot to look at while he's working his magic.
