We hired VanderHyde to put in a 30 amp 120v service to hook up the camper we live in. They came and did the install, but put in a 240v instead of the 120v. This mistake costed me over $1000 to fix. I was reimbursed the initial payment of the installation, but not the two converters and the repair man that I had to have fix it. They took over 5 days to get the electric hooked up right. We have been without the camper heater since the first install. They refuse to reimburse any further. I would never hire them again. The company's morals are not for me. read more

The worker was a no-show for the first appointment. When we called, we were told it was a computer error. We rescheduled, took another morning off work, and they were again a no call/ no show. When we called, we were told they didn't come because it was too hot to go in the attic (at 8 AM), and they were coming the following day, which they never cleared with us. When we said we would be going a different direction, the receptionist happily agreed. We have never experienced such incompetent and inconsiderate "service." If you call Vander for a furnace problem, your very next call should be setting up a second opinion with a smaller, locally owned company- same day. In a high-pressure winter situation, make sure to take a step back and verify their findings. Do not take "whole furnace needs to be replaced" as the end-all after they look around for 10 minutes attempting to find a reason, not a fix. If they say the ignition is bad or the heat exchange is corroded beyond repair or leaking, ask them to show you. For $99 a visit, have them prove it. Don't get mixed up in the ramblings of "this is how a furnace works". Ask "What was the ohms reading for the igniter? Show me, please." "Where is a CLEAR photo of the heat exchanger corrosion and proof that it's not cosmetic wear? Please perform a combustion analysis to prove it's leaking CO." You CAN find another company to fix or replace that one part for $600 vs selling you an entire furnace +bringing this up to code +bringing that up to code +... Don't let them tell you otherwise. Their plumber was great, he knew his stuff. Their attitude is the customer has to pay full cost before any work is done and sign away their rights after the work is done. The tech also coped an attitude of higher than thou when speaking with a paying customer. I was in the wrong for asking for some clarification on verbiage. The feeling was that their word was good but my word was not. I could trust they would do the job correctly and to code but they did not trust me at all, unless I signed away all my rights. Is this what we are getting to? The verbiage on their documents was so general that if I were to accidentally fall in their parking lot I would be liable to pay for all court costs and lawyers on both sides. The tech then said this is all normal and I was the problem. Respect for my concerns was not shown at all. They had the full payment in their pocket before moving a finger, then I have to sign that I will pay if anything goes wrong. That is not how you treat a customer. Are they used to being sued? Is this a common thing out there? Do they deal with cooks and criminals all the time? Their price was overly high as a 40 gallon gas water heater should not be $3,500. They left me with nothing in writting. No receipt for my money, no guarantee in writting. I am sure they will email me something. After all the only untrustworthy side was me (the customer). The tech insisted that the work was all up to code several times, is that extra? Isn't their work supposed to always be to code? isn't that expected. read more

Vander Hyde charges a $150 service fee regardless of the service provided and the material price they quote. I attempted for 3.5 weeks to call and speak with someone in the office to understand the billing. They were here literally 5 minutes . I was charged a "diagnostic fee" and the total was $380 to literally just reinsert a plug . Horrible business! Spent $18k on high efficiency Lochinvar Boiler--installed 11/30/2023. 14 months later my house has no heat and the warranty is up. Called VanderHyde and they quoted 3 levels of service: the "band aid" for $1700 and the "premium" was $3K!!! It took them 6 months to pass the City of GR's inspection (they kept failing because of poor installation!!--red flag). Its only been 7 months since the boiler passed inspection. In my opinion the job wasn't done until after it passed inspection. Not to mention they put a hole in our wall when they were installing; the installation was a mess that took 4 times as long and the installers told us the guy who quoted the job quit because he didn't know what he was doing. We had a backup only a few weeks after having our septic tanks pumped. I called VanderHyde thinking there might be a blockage in our main line. VanderHyde charged $571 to snake the main line without doing anything to diagnose the issue or investigate the symptoms. This was the cheapest of their options. Big surprise...he snaked it and the issue persisted. Poof, $571 just disappeared. It would have been more productive for me to use that money as toilet paper. VanderHyde's cheapest package to use a camera was $1,000+. So, you have to pay for VenderHyde's most expensive service in order for them to take basic steps to identify the issue? On top of this, the VanderHyde employee would not stop asking questions about the condition and age of my water heater. Water is backing up into my house and you're trying to upsell water heater service. Read the room a bit... I feel really dumb now, but it's an exploitative business practice. I will never use VanderHyde again. For any reason. Turns out, it was an issue with our drain field. I called Plummers and they were knowledgeable, helpful, and reasonable. I wish I would have checked these ratings before calling them :( I moved into a new house last year and they had a magnet on the furnace for Vander Hyde, so that's why I called them. My furnace wasn't heating up to what the thermostat was set to, so I called to have it looked at. $1,000 later, he said it was fixed. Except less than a week later, it started doing the exact same thing. I called them back thinking since they obviously didn't fix the problem before, they would fix it now for free. Nope, they said it was something else now, and charge another $700.... Well, a week later, THE SAME THING IS STILL HAPPENING! They will not come back out for free, so I am calling another company. As a single mom, $1,700 on my credit card is absolutely devastating.... and I still don't have proper heat. I have 2 small children who NEED to have heat! It is January in Michigan. read more

My furnace had been cycling on and off during the morning start up. When they came to service and/or diagnose the problem, they brought two technicians and neither was wearing a mask. They spent about 45 minutes checking out the furnace. They said the furnace was over heating and tripping out the safety switch. They determined to fix this we needed to have the furnace cleaned ($200), the evaporators cleaned ($200) and the fan motor replaced($500). They gave us a quote for the work and charged us $167 for their "diagnosis". We called a different HVAC contractor, he came and fixed the real problem in about 1/2 hour and changed us $65. read more

The had no problem selling me a Generac, but the one year warranty was a joke. No help from them when we needed help hooking up mobile link, would not return calls promptly. Anne said they would do the one year free oil change for $155.00, after not helping with other issues. I have used Vander Hyde for the past 10 years to service my furnace and AC because it was under a 10 year warranty. (the poor quality York system and constant problems is not the bases of this review). First the technicians are great and just follow ownership direction. They always fix the problem. My issue is the outrageous charges. The following is from my memory because they did not leave any documentation. My bill was $967. I understand the $79 trip charge, the $69 for diagnostics BUT $75 to go and get the parts? They said I need 3 parts: Burners (5), Hot surface ignition and Flame sensor. I found two suppliers on-line they would charge me anywhere from $121 to $176 for the parts. Based on these retail costs, I estimate that Vander Hyde charge $550+ for one hour labor to install these parts. My advice is shop around or do it yourself. GP read more

I had a technician come out to my house to service my furnace because it wasn't running. After doing some diagnostic work, he came to the conclusion that I needed roughly $1,800 in parts and that didn't even include labor. I decided to get a second opinion because that is a lot of money. The second technician came out and discovered what the problem was in less than five minutes. My gas valve wasn't set correctly and just needed to be adjusted. I have called this company twice to speak with someone and each time I was just transferred to a voicemail. This company let me down majorly and left me without heat because their technician isn't properly trained. read more

We found out from Cascade Township that Vanderhyde did not complete the last step of the mandatory process for generator install in Cascade township. Per Cascade township, Vanderhyde is required to request township inspection after installation of the generator. Additionally, Vanderhyde should have involved Consumers energy to turn off power to the house, prior to the generator being installed in January, and asked Consumers to restore power after the work was done. They did not involve Consumers for either, thus resulting in the electrical explosion. They did not complete the Consumers energy steps, nor did they complete the inspection step and it has been 6 months since the work has been completed. Vanderhyde needs to complete this inspection step. Additionally, Vanderhyde has yet to reimburse us for damages incurred during the electrical explosion totaling $1312. read more

Vanderhyde installed an HVAC unit in my residence and did not pull permits. I only discovered this because I was going to replace my water heater about 18 months later through Godwin and the mechanic noticed that I didn't have any permits on my HVAC. I contacted the city and sure enough they hadn't pulled permits. I requested an inspection and the inspector told me that my HVAC failed the inspection with approximately 13 things that needed to be corrected. When Vanderhyde came back out to correct the deficiencies, the unit still failed inspections. There were two more things wrong. I waited to contact them because of the COVID situation, but they eventually did come back out. They failed inspections again. All the work from the first inspection hadn't been completed. Once again I had Vanderhyde come out. The guy showed up late, and once again didn't do the work that the inspector required. When I questioned the mechanic as to whether he completed what the inspector stated in the email sent and asked him to show me the repairs he made, the mechanic told me that he didn't give a damn what the email said and told me that I was a god damned liar and stormed out of my home in a huff. Well, I still have the email and he didn't do the work that was required. The lack of professionalism and laziness is astounding. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. If these people even dare to write that I accidentally left a review for the wrong company I guarantee you I did not. Avoid at all cost. We had trouble with our furnace on a Sunday. Saw their ad in our church bulletin and called. They said they would be there at 2 and at 4 said we will have to wait until tomorrow. When they did show up they said they were training an employee and when the bill came they charged double labor because of two reps on site. They would not budge on this charge at all and threaten to file collections against us if we did not pay immediately. They also slapped their company logo on every piece of ewuipment they could after we said no to them doing so. Have 5 stickers to remove. I scheduled an electrical service call due to a fan light kit that stopped working suddenly. It seemed like a small, fixture related issue but I didn't want the inconvenience of trying to DIY a repair. The brain for the fixture's remote control went out, so the electrician disconnected it and now the lights work with manual operation (pull chains and wall switch), but the remote is dead. The end result is that the light is functional now, so the electrician did "fix" the problem. The two star review is because I was charged for a time increment while the electrician was lost or trying to find parking at my building. Stuck to his guns about the charge when questioned. Being nickeled and dimed on these kinds of things for such a minor, quick fix will never lead to a great review. Enjoy the extra $27, I'll call someone else next time. read more

Do NOT use this company. They were unethical in how they treated me for service that was not completed and their technician lied on the invoice (which I never received). I will not recommend them to anyone! Tom from Vanderhyde Service was out to clear a lateral clog in our main drain to the street. While an effort was made to clear out the clog, only 75 feet of pipe was searched for a clog and was unable to find it. He didn't have longer line to go the full 100 feet to the main sewer connection, however I was invoiced for 100ft of snaking and charged the full $632 service cost as if the work had been completed. To make matters worse, he recommended I use a different company who actually had the right equipment rather than going back to his own company to see if someone else in their fleet had 100ft line. I've heard good things about this company before, however my experience has not been positive. I expected more from a locally owned family business. read more

Thankfully, (knock wood) I haven't needed these guys for service very often.... Buuuuut, every so often our home throws a temper tantrum and rebels against us. That was the case this morning when we awoke to a very chilly house and a furnace that refused to turn on. I called the number, at 445am, 90minutes and $160 later I have heat. We have used them for backed up plumbing twice, both durning regular hours and on an emergency basis. Every time we use them we are pleased with the professionalism of their techs and the quality of our repairs. If you're ever stuck on a 7* day and no heat, call VanderHyde. If your plumbing backs up into your tub, call VanderHyde. If you need a new AC unit installed, call VanderHyde. If your old thermostat stops talking to the furnace... $995 to replace two outside outlets (one GFI) and weatherproof boxes - probably $60 in parts and it took less than an hour. They told me the cost before they did the work, and I approved it because I needed to have it done. I don't know if they're taking advantage of the pandemic or what the reason was for charging a ridiculous amount. I called to try to understand why it was so much and hoped there was a mistake somewhere (the invoice shows a single line item for $995). They only responded with boilerplate talking points and couldn't explain why it was over $900 more than the cost of the parts (again - it was less than an hour or work). The "price breakdown" they sent separately didn't actually provide any cost breakdown and was completely useless. Our water heater had a slow drip. We called Vanderhyde to come out and look at it. They do not do quotes over the phone and it's an automatic service fee to come out. To replace the water heater ranged from $2500-$6500 for very little value between each package. I went for the middle of the road bronze package. After about a week my water smelled like rotten eggs. It is an easy fix for any homeowner but they made my hot water heater unaccessible to add any disinfectants. It required them to come out. I feel this was done intentionally so if needed they would get additional service calls. They told me exactly what I needed done to remove the smell but would not give me a quote over the phone. They don't offer anyway to talk to the technician and offered me no solutions to make it right. Not a good value, poor customer service and install is set up for only them or a professional to do any kind of maintenance. read more

Please do not use Vander Hyde services. I had a hot water heater replaced by them less than 5 years ago. Over the weekend, while I was having a fireplace insert put into my fireplace, the hot water heater got bumped and I had to call a plumber because it started leaking. The plumber I called (not Vanderhyde) was shocked when I told him that it was less than 5 years old because there was so much corrosion! It had been leaking unbeknownst to me. Anthony Vanderhyde came out on the following Monday and said that it was because of my water. I have city water and I don't have this problem with other connections. I asked them to fix this free of charge because it wasn't right from the beginning. Also when I moved in to my current house and had them check on my furnace, they missed a huge potential problem with a tube that goes into the sewer from my furnace. To fix their mess-up, Anthony told me that I would have to pay 824.00 for this! I was shocked! The plumber that I have now is going to fix these problems for 300.00 and put in a new water heater because it is under warranty. As Anthony was leaving, he snidely said, "Your fireplace is illegal". I have used VanderHyde plumbing twice and have been disappointed both times. They do good work, which is why i gave them 2 stars, but for the work they did both times the cost was excessive. We had a leaking pipe under our brand new sink replaced and i had them fix a drain plug that i could not get to work. They were here maybe an hour. The cost was $423 and they replaced metal pipe with pvc, so maybe $20 in parts. Just wow. I was debating whether or not to just so no and call another plumber, but it would have cost the same in the end and i wouldn't have been able to use my brand new vanity for another few days. I bought before hand a toilet universal kit for $16.75 this included everything needed. he claimed those do not really work. He showed me an estimate starting at over $1050.00 for their best warranty. Medium warranty was over $600.00. another 30 day warranty for $450,00. i was feeling intimidated and under duress and argued with him. Made me feel like I had to sign. I'm 75 years old and I signed. I felt really taken.The complete toilet cost me $550,00. I asked if he was going to replace the inside of the toilet. He said yes left came back with 3 parts a handle a flap and a plastic tube. parts maybe cost $25,00. like I said earlier I paid $16.75 for Meijers complete kit. I called their office several times.
