I am a widow whose husband used to fix my car and knew how to "deal" with mechanics. I was going to another place and every time they would change my oil, they would have a list of things I needed that would cost hundreds of dollars. Wow. I don't even know where to begin with how great my experience was here! Best mechanic in Gilroy! What a professional, ethical,trustworthy business to take your car to! Fast, efficient service done excellent by a pro! So here's my story: I took my car to a local dealership for leaking coolant. They said there was water in my engine and quoted me $7,000.00 for a new engine. So figured I should get a 2nd opinion, just in case. I told Larry my issues with the dealership and he didn't mention a single bad thing about them. He just said, "let me take a look and see what I can find." I even opened myself up and told him, "I love this car and I'm not buying a new one. I'll pay the $7K if i really need a new engine." He totally could have taken advantage of me right there. But he didn't. I got a call the next day and he told me he couldn't find any water in the oil... so no new engine needed!!!!! He fixed my car for so much less, I asked him if there was anything else he wanted to do or charge me for and he just said, "nope, just get your oil changed again in 3,000 miles!" WOW!!! What a guy!! I've been driving it for weeks now with NO problems and my trusty ol' car is doing great!! THANK YOU, LARRY!!! UPDATE!!!! Nearly 2 years later and my car still runs GREAT!!!! I recently took my truck in for some costly repairs, and he quoted me a price over the phone. For years I've gone to the dealer for maintenance on my Prius. Why, I'm asking myself now -- why didn't I come to Vanderford's sooner? After having trouble getting into the dealer (!) I called Larry Vanderford and he asked if I could come in within the hour. My car was done within 2 hours. Larry quoted me $90 for the repair but he was wrong. The bill was $54. He could have charged me the full $90 that he estimated and I wouldn't have blinked but he explained that he was able to find a part for less money. So he charged me accordingly. There are lots of horror stories about auto repair places but not at Vanderford's. They have kept my 96 Ford Tahoe alive long after others said to scrap it. I will absolutely never go back. My father used to own one of the only music stores in Downtown Gilroy. For 10 or 15 years, my father got his cars repaired at Vanderford's Auto Repair. My father sent me and countless others there. (My sister witnessed my father recommending Vanderford's to many customers over the years while working in the music store). Years later, I decided to go back. After he repaired my car, I gave him a check from my credit card company. It was one of those cash advance checks from a major bank. I didn't have the credit card with me because I was waiting for a new card--the original had been lost. The owner would not take my check. He said it was not a real check. He would not let me take my car to my house to get another form of payment. I had to walk 5 blocks carrying a heavy book bag, my purse and my 13 year-old dog. I am serious. He asked me why I couldn't call my Dad. Hello, I am almost 40. I have never had anyone treat me like a common criminal before this. He acted like I was trying to pass a bad check. What a complete ASSHAT. I told my sister and she could not believe the treatment I had received from VANDERFORD'S AUTO after all the business my father had sent his way over the years. read more

i was very disappointed with the service for the simple fact that they did not do what they told me they were going to do. i told them what work had been done to my 2004 astro van and that it kept flashing a po 300 trouble code which is a random cylinder miss fire he told me that they had to take all the inside of the van apart which would take at least 30 to 40 minutes to take apart and reassemble! well they call me the next day and said that my van was ready and that they found that cylinder number 2 was oil fouled so they replaced it and that they test drove my van and that the check engine light was off and that it was good to go so i went to pick up my van paid him $179.00 and some change. so i took my van for a test drive and after about a 6 mile drive the check engine light came back on and my van started missing again ! i then called him back he told me to bring it back so i did he told me he was going to check cylinder number 2 again and if he found it to be oil fouled again that my van probably had bad valve guides or that the piston rings were bad. so he told me to park the van that it was to hot work on at the moment that he would work on it in the morning he called me the next day and told me that cylinder number 2 was oil fouled again and that i should replace the engine because it had too many miles on it! well my van only has 150.000 miles on it and still runs strong it just had that miss fire and the check engine light on so i went to pick up my van and i felt like i was being mislead so i took it to the Chevrolet dealer here in Glory they charged me $250.00 to dissemble and to reassemble it and to run a diagnostic test on it they call me the next day and told they had found the problem they told me that it had a bad spark plug in cylinder number 2 and the distributor cap had a crack in it and that's"s what was causing all the problems!!! so they charged me $24.00 for the distributor cap and $10.00 for the spark plug for a total of $284.00 but those $284.00 were well worth it because my van is running like a champ again!!!!!! i will never take my van or any of my vesicles or even recommend any of my family, friends, or anyone to vanderford's ever!!!!!!!!!! i wouldn't even give them one star but i have to give them one star just so that could post this!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
