Artisans. Father and son establishment. Friendly. Competitive pricing. Collaborators. Craftsmen. These are just a few words to describe Vanguard Iron Works. Nick is a veteran ironwork craftsmen with 40 years experience. Art, his son who also is experienced in creating master ironworks, manages the front face of their business, meeting with clients about quotes and communicating with clients every step of the way. Together with their small team, they truly create masterpieces. After meeting with several ironworks companies to get an understanding of the material and its capabilities/limitations, and regulations for 3 stair rails, I decided to go with Vanguard. There was one company whose quote was slightly cheaper than Vanguard, but I felt Vanguard wasn't just a welding company, but that they understood the materials, and grasped my artistic endeavor better. The custom work I needed done: one 14 foot indoor rail, one 36 inch stair rail, one 32 inch straight rail and 2 outdoor gates that needed fixing. Their shop in Azusa is kept neat and organized. I made many visits there to see the progress of my custom stair rails and to give direction each step of the way. I would tell Art I didn't like the shape of a curve or that the placement of a sphere was off, and they would make adjustments and improve the pieces. I appreciate that they don't dominate, but give guidance from years of experience in working with the materials, collaborating and listening to what can be improved artistically. They listen and take care of their clients. I told both Art and Nick that I had to keep with my budget and that I would love to replace my outdoor gates, but couldn't at this time since most of my budget was spent on the 3 indoor stair rails, and to just fix the gates so that they would swing close on their own again. When they went to make the cuts on my gate, it was so rotted, that it just crumbled. Instead of going the easy route, Nick spent additional time and material mending the gate to make it stronger. His professional advice was to replace these 30 year old gates, but he understood my budget constraints and worked with me without hesitation, not taking the easy route, but the harder, more time consuming one that extended the life of my gates. It was a pleasure to work with Art, Nick and their team. I joked with Nick and dubbed him the wrought iron "surgeon" as I watched him work. Like a surgeon, Nick is a master craftsman understanding the material and performing very precise, intricate work down to the last eighth of an inch. What can I say when I find that I, the VERY particular man that I am, have contracted the VERY BEST ornamental iron contractor to build a 12' double gate to satisfy my discriminating tastes? That is what happened and I cannot rave loud enough over the work performed by Art and his crew. This gate is a work of ART! (pardon the pun). Vanguard was the first of at least 10 contractors that I called and had bid the gate. Art had me look at his website and choose from a vast assortment of pictures to tell him the type of gate I wanted. His price was not the lowest, but a close second. I am a firm believer that, "you get what you pay for". I wanted a gate that would enhance the look of the front of my home while being strong enough and mounted well enough to serve the purpose of a gate. I received that in spades. Art worked with me to build the exact gate that I wanted. Last week, Art and his crew came out with the 95% completed gate and "installed" it to make sure that all measurements were correct. Some on-site mods needed to be made and Art assured me that I had no need t worry; the final product would meet my expectations. They did a great job on our side gate. We originally had another company do our main gate but they never came back to finish off our side gate. We called Vanguard and they came by right away. They were fast and very professional. We should have to called them in the first place. You can tell the quality of the side gate is far superior than the main gate. I have a low iron 4' fence around the front of my property. My neighbor (who drives for Uber) came home one late evening, miscalculated the left turn into his driveway and creamed my fence. His SUV got the worst end of the deal, but my fence (which had never been hit in over 30 yrs) was seriously bent over. I called and got a few quotes; every one of them were for a complete tear down of my existing fence and constructing a whole new one. Even though I made it very clear I only wanted the 2 sections that were bent repaired. A complete new fence was not what I wanted or needed, let alone afford. So I found Vanguard, and Art came to see me. He was such a nice person, very soft spoken but all business. He tolk measurements & pictures (I had emailed him an initial shot showing the damaged section only). He gave me a very reasonable figure, we made a appointment date, he & his crew went to work immediately and by the time I got home from work, the fence looked like it had never been hit. Precision work. I was elated, to say the least. We discussed some other potential iron work I have in mind that I plan to do in the months ahead. Art certainly will be my guy for those jobs. I spoke to Art on phone after 8 am, he requested to text the picture, responded in 5 minutes with the quote and completed the job the same morning.
