This bakery is great. It is owned by two sisters. They make amazing items from scratch daily. My favorite item by far is the Mad Bar: salted caramel over oatmeal cookie with a bunch of other goodies mixed in. Their cupcakes are great and they are always adding new ones to the menu, I love the raspberry swirl, grasshopper and apple pie. They did a smash cake for my son's first birthday and it turned out amazing! I would definitely recommend them for special occasion cakes. They are available via email, phone and even Facebook. Second impression, better than the first. There are still some things about the place that are unusual, but this time around I scored some hits on the menu. My wife and I tried a scone and a cinnamon roll. I also got a latte with skim milk. The latte was good. Still not as bold or rich as the original in Edgewater, but I'm willing to overlook it; coffee isn't really their main thing here. On recommendation, I picked up the cinnamon roll. Let's get the awkward out of the way first; there aren't any plastic knives in the seated area to split a 5" roll in half, and it's borderline criminal to serve a cinnamon roll at room temperature. But there was the right amount of cinnamon-brown sugar on the inside, and the frosting itself was delicious. As for the bread, I'm not sure if it's a good quick-bread cinnamon roll or a yeasted cinnamon roll lacking most of the complexity that yeast is supposed to offer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Ah, but the hits. I traded with my wife for her almond-cherry scone. Killer frosting, killer cherry jam. The almond flavor permeated the scone and there were bits of cherry in the jam, which complemented the sweetness of the scone and frosting very well. Not something I'd usually get, and I would go out of my way to order a scone here. We also took a few cupcakes with us, and these have (so far) also been excellent. The M&M cupcake was almost cloyingly sweet but decently moist and flavorful. And the mint-chocolate cupcake had good chocolate flavor, also was not dry, and dialed back the sweetness on the buttercream frosting to make room for peppermint. I've been to VSB on two occasions, and I've been almost completely satisfied both times. The first time I went, I purchased the PB cookie sandwich (2 PB cookies with PB ganache between the cookies) and the Chocolate Chip cookie sandwich (buttercream between two chocolate chip cookies with sprinkles. The PB sandwich was good. I thought it was a little dry. I would like to see chocolate chip cookies with the Peanut Butter middle! As for the chocolate chip cookie sandwich= HELLO HEAVEN. This thing was the moneymaker. I've had it twice, and the buttercream in the middle is awesome. It's my favorite item at VSB. The next time I went, I purchased another cookie sandwich, and 2 regular chocolate chip cookies. A good cookie is slightly crunchy on the outside and chewy in the core. This cookie fit the bill. I heated it in the microwave for 12 seconds because I'm a more chewy guy. The reason VSB is not 5 star in my book is because on both occasions, I really wanted the Oatmeal Cream Pie. Both times, they were no where to be found. I'm guessing they are popular, but I can't get to the bakery early, and they have not had them! That being said, I'm sure once I try the OCP, they will be a 5 star. Until then, they are on the edge! The bakery is in a very big building. We have frequented this bakery for their individual treats such as cupcakes (wedding cake-yum!) and cookies previously, but just ordered a cake for my daughter's 1st birthday for this past weekend. I was late in ordering it....Wednesday for Saturday....but they were extremely accommodating and willing to try the design I sent them from a picture I found on Pinterest. We chose a 2 tier cake with a vanilla top (for my daughter's smash cake) and raspberry vanilla buttercream bottom. Pink icing and an adorable giraffe with my daughter's name on the side.....Vanilla Sugar Bakery delivered perfection! Matched the picture perfectly and was totally delicious!!!! It was $129 which they said would feed 20-25 people. Honestly, would have probably fed 30 or more. Great service and fantastic tasting (and looking) cakes....highly recommend. read more

I can't speak to the catering and special orders, but as an eat-in bakery this place leaves a lot to be desired. They're located by the Metra tracks, but open after the morning rush hour and close before the afternoon one. As for the two sisters who run the place: one is more unpleasant than the other. They rarely smile, and could care less if anyone comes in--as if you're intruding. They enter from the back, closed off, room when you come in. After they give you what you ask for, they return behind closed doors. One would think that the bakery is a front! Oh, and the selection in their cases is meager, and what little seating they have is uninviting. It appears that they're relocating to Glen Ellyn. Winfield's gain is Glen Ellyn's loss. read more

I have to say the cupcakes were good but the service and attitude leaves a bad taste. My husband had tried to order for curbside pickup and apparently there was a miscommunication on when it was ready. The part that loses a customer for us and anyone we can tell was how it was handled by the owner. Very rude, accusatory , wrong , and just downright unpleasant. Pretty basic that you shouldn't treat anyone that way let alone someone that had wanted to advocate for you and be a loyal customer. Perhaps a little more sugar for the owner is in order. Plenty of places trying to stay in business and frankly went to nothing Bundt cakes instead. I like to think I am always on the constant hunt for the perfect cupcake. I am a freak for cupcakes and I think I've found the place for that perfection. Wonderful it happens to be a few minute walk across the street from my wk. Today I got a Caramel Macchiato cupcake and a Salted Caramel cupcake, and the first bite was heaven. The cake is very moist, the frosting is smooth, buttery and super flavorful. I have not tried anything else they offer, and I think I will once I am finished with my cupcake binge. The interior of the place is a little harsh on my eyes (so pink...) and it never seems hopping with people. I like though that it is spacious and fun. Really worth a look-see! read more

I just purchased one cupcake one hour ago and that was the BEST chocolate cupcake that I have ever tasted! I want another one but I guess I have to wait until I am in Winfield again! I walked into this bakery to order a custom cake which I wanted for my sons birthday. Nora, an employee there took my information down and wrote exactly what I wanted, plus I included a picture as well. I was told that their cake designer would return a call with price details and such within 24 hours. That call never came, until 3 days before the date I requested. Yet, they wanted 2-3 weeks lead time to prepare the order. I never received a text, a call or even an email regarding my order. Nora called asking in a demanding voice if I still wanted to order the cake. I'm like your kidding right? I asked her why I was never contacted before today and she hung up the phone on me. I called back until they decided to answer my call and I was told that Nora was with another customer. WTF??? Is this how you operate? Is this how you treat your customers? This is one business who will definitely not get any business from me. All my friends will hear about this. So sad that you lie to me and then run and hide. Instead of apologizing and maybe salvage something but it just shows the the class of people they are, especially Nora! read more

Although the cake is very good, I am very disappointed in the customer service we received from Vanilla Sugar Bakery. On 2/25/20 we signed a contract for a 2-tier wedding cake and 10 dozen cupcakes for my daughter's 6/27/20 wedding, and paid a $250.00 non-refundable deposit. Little did we know Covid-19 would soon turn our lives upside-down. Our order was about $650.00 and had a separate $150.00 delivery charge to Maple Park, IL which we thought was fair. Because of Covid-19, my daughter's wedding was moved to 10/9/20 in Delavan, WI. We tried to keep Vanilla Sugar as the bakery vendor, but the delivery charge would be $350.00 to Delavan, WI, or we could pick up ourselves. We are in no position to pick up the wedding cake and cupcakes, and $350.00 is more than half the cost of the order. On 6/4 (more than 4 months notice) we told Norma we unfortunately need to cancel and would like the deposit sent to my home address. Understood we signed a contract and the deposit is non-refundable, but we were hoping due to the Covid-19 circumstances, she would refund our $250.00 deposit. Vanilla Sugar is the only vendor we have that is not refunding our deposit. All others refunded the entire deposit or a great portion of the deposit. We had a cake tasting that I would be more than happy to pay for. This is very disappointing. If it was not for Covid-19, my daughter would be getting married next weekend and Vanilla Sugar would be providing the wedding cake and cupcakes. I wish them well. Their cake is good. It is just unfortunate they lack in customer service - especially during these unprecedented times. read more

I wish I could give zero stars, alas I cannot. I sent them a picture which they promised they could recreate, low and behold they could not, it was an absolute disgrace. They emailed me an hour before 100 people showed up at my house for the party, saying oops sorry we made the wrong flavor. People told me I should have ordered the cake instead of trying to make it myself talk about EMBARRASSING. It was hideous (I posted photos in here of what I asked for and what I got, go find it for a good laugh). I cannot believe I paid for something that I could have made better myself even if I could only use sawdust and water for ingredients. The best part though, when my mom emailed them that she wanted a refund, instead of owning up to it and saying they forgot to make it, they chaneled their inner J.K. Rowling and produced quite the riveting fiction short story, the plot went as such: That I was screaming at them and swearing (impossible I have extreme confrontational anxiety, I prefer to hide behind my keyboard) and that it only looked hideous because they were sure that I must have driven like a maniac and ruined it, and that they wouldn't refund us because they simply did not want to. They literally blamed me, an 18-year-old at the time who drives like a 90-year-old, I couldn't be a safer driver if I tried. This is a wonderful little bakery! Their cupcakes are DELICIOUS and their customer service is great. My husband was going to be gone until almost 11 pm on my birthday, so he stopped in on his way to work and asked to pay for some cupcakes so I could come by later in the day to pick them out. I contacted Vanilla Sugar for my wedding cake. I explained over the phone that I have a gluten allergy and would not be tasting (I was bringing my fiance and dad). To my surprise, she said she "would absolutely make me gluten free cake because every bride should have something at their tasting!" I was so excited, especially because I didn't ask for it. When we got there, we experienced poor customer service from the girl up front and the decorator said, "Oh, no, we don't have any gf cake for you". I was crushed! I was looking forward to it all week. But, this girl was covered in flour so I have my doubts about cross contamination. Then, the decorator had us pick out 4 cupcakes (you won't be tasting actual cake), and took 30 minutes to cut them into 4 pieces! We almost left! She scribbled my information down in a notebook and said she would email me a quote. I never received it. I had high hopes going in but VS was very disappointing. Update: Very interesting response from the owner! It is funny because I ordered a Chai Tea Latte, which is why I was confused about the coffee. I just asked the girl if it was the correct order, I wanted to make sure. But, I think the comment gives a good understanding of their customer service and how much they value customers. And, you would think as a business, you would follow up with customers no matter what. read more

Best bakery in the northern suburbs! They have amazing buttercream filled cookies which are my fav! And the huge brownies with icing on top hit the spot. Ive gotten Iced Coffee before and they use a well known coffee brand. Always polite, helpful and very clean. I have also had the cupcakes, love the different flavors. From reading some of the reviews on here-let me just say this is a BAKERY which means they use fresh ingredients. The furthest thing from mass production I've ever tasted! I had to visit Central DuPage hospital for some blood work. After fasting for twelve hours my girlfriend saw and suggested we stop in for a bit to eat. Turns out that we stumbled upon a little find. I grabbed a candy cookie bar and a brownie sandwich, while she picked a cupcake and the brownie sandwich. Everything was perfection. Now everyone in Skokie that saw what we purchased is begging us to go back. Lol. I think we might just keep this one our little secret, but will definitely be revisiting this independent bakery.
