The new iteration of Paul's Place is a breath of fresh air for Shawnee. They clearly respect the family connection of the old Paul's Place but are working hard to bring a fresh and new experience to Shawnee - which we desperately need. I heard they've had some kinks to work out which is understandable- but for us and our first visit they did everything to make us feel at home. Great ribeye (definitely better quality of steaks)! My review would have been negative stars if they were available. This place ruined my fiancé's birthday dinner, the staff needs serious training, the kitchen staff doesn't even know how to cook a steak to the proper temperature which really scares me for a supposed steakhouse, the food quality is not what you expect from a nice restaurant and the leadership certainly doesn't seem to care about their business or guests. I have been struggling to find a nice place to eat while working up here. Paul's is very nice the staff here extremely friendly and overall service has been excellent. It's been a while since I visited Paul's Place. We went this week with a group of 8 for a birthday lunch. The restaurant is very spacious, so even though they were quite busy with the lunch rush, our group was accommodated well. We started with the fried cheese curds, which were amazing. I will definitely be ordering those again! The menu is pretty expansive, so we ordered a variety of things. The chicken cranberry salad was a hit with those who ordered it. My chicken fried steak was good, but lacked a true homemade flavor. It was a great portion size for lunch. There were a lot of great options to choose from. Don't expect the same great food as it used to be. The new ownership seems to be really skimping on the quality, but has raised the prices. We went for a birthday dinner, family of five. Service was extremely slow and lacking, even though they were not crowded at all. Everyone said their food was just OK. We were expecting a nice steakhouse as we had in the past. Tonight was our first time at Paul's since moving here two months ago from Kansas. Amber was our waitress, and she was patient with us as we looked over the menu. She did a great job, and we were very pleased with her service. We did have to send my husband's ribeye back once and my steak medallions back twice because they were undercooked. Regardless, the steaks were really good once the kitchen got it right. I asked for a chocolate martini and the bartender came up with a right nice one and I didn't waste one drop. Now you must try the brownie sundae for desert; but you might want to share because it's so rich and gooey good. This unfortunately was a very big let down in experience and in food. My husband and I took our son out to eat for my husband and I's wedding anniversary. We were greeted by the lovely hostess (which is the reason for the two stars otherwise it would be less) who created a table for us to have our meal. We were sat at a table and the waitress took our drink order and returned with drinks and asked for us to order. I inquired about the seafood and the different dressings and the waitress did not have any feedback or knowledge about the seafood. Which I totally get not everyone likes seafood but there was no attempt at even suggesting anything off the menu. It felt as though we were an inconvenience based off the demeanor and that there was very little follow up throughout our meal. When our meal arrived, my husband has ordered a burger and asked for mustard and mayo. We were surprised that a steak restaraunt not only gives packets of condiments but only gives you one singular packet and my husband had to request more and was only given...one more packet. My meal was the salmon and mashed potatoes and vegetable medley which left so much to be desired it was not edible. The mashed potatoes were so chalky and the gravy was like like if I took a bottle of glue and poured ontop. The vegtables were cold and the salmon had no seasoning. I pushed my plate to the side and I was never asked if there was something wrong with the meal or asked if something could replace it. I was very disappointed in this whole experience and wished this would have been addressed. I wasn't even looking for a comped meal but just being asked to get something else. I do not every bring up or ask for food to be free because I go out to eat with the intention of paying the full price of whatever I ordered but this is just a total let down and will not be coming back. I was looking for an establishment to host my mother's 70th birthday at and this was also testing the waters for that but it seems I will be looking elsewhere. read more

My sister & I visited on 7/31/24 for lunch. We ordered our usual spinach & artichoke dip. I don't like Spinach Dip but this place has the Best Spinach Dip, it's so creamy & delicious. We split the lunch fried chicken alfredo as the portion is large & is enough to eat for the two of us. Our server Genessa was excellent. She was friendly, funny & right there when we needed something without being intrusive. We hope we can always have her as our waitress. Whenever we are deciding to eat lunch, we both are always in agreement that Paul's is where we want to go for lunch. We were in Shawnee to check out OBU's campus and came across Paul's Place for lunch. It was on a Saturday during June, we probably stopped in around 12:30. It was not crowded and we were able to sit right down. But, it was doing a steady business, as there were many other tables seated around us. I did not catch our server's name but she was fantastic. She was very knowledgable regarding the menu and had great suggestions for us. Also, we received drink refills quickly, and our check when it was time to leave. 5 star service all around. We started with the fried jalapenos and onions which were very good. They are served with housemade ranch and are crispy but not overly greasy. They were also seasoned well. My only complaint would be that I prefer more jalapenos, but I understand you can't give the general public that much heat so they have to cool it off for the majority of diners. My son had spaghetti and meatballs and I had chicken fried steak to eat. The meatballs were great but the sauce was lacking in flavor. It just needed some seasoning. The chicken fried steak is small compared to the behemoth chicken fried steaks you get at other restaurants, but for lunch it was perfect. The steak was breaded and seasoned well and served with green beans and mashed potatoes. This would be a "blue plate special" at a lot of places and a good meal of this quality is great to find at a very reasonable price. I sat at the bar, I'm a regular customer. My server was Amy. I ordered a drink and glass of water. I had to make additional requests to get the water. I would think water would be a standard serving for any guest. After some time, I ordered a second drink. At that point, she asked other bar guests if they were ready for another drink and served them before making my drink. I decided to leave because of what I considered to be poor service. I told Amy of my disappointment and she basically blew it off, with no response to my disappointment. read more

Waste of a birthday dinner. My family took my cancerous mother out for a birthday dinner on 8/11. Although I could offer suggestions on the bland atmosphere, that doesn't upset me. The belligerently loud server is what brings me to leave a public review. He apparently had some friends at a neighboring table. While we wait with empty glasses and no food for him to talk to his friends and tell stories that the entire restaurant could hear. By the time our food came back it was cold. Benefit of the doubt, we got steak and I know that has to rest, so that's not a huge deal. But just that the entire time this guy was talking to this other table non stop. We waited 15 after our plates were taken for the receipt. Dude is over there talking. Once we got the receipt and paid with cash, we literally counted 14 minutes before we got change. We could hear him talking the whole time in the kitchen. I bet this place has potential. But this guy is dragging them down. read more

We as a couple ate here 5-17-2022 for dinner. We arrived at 4:40 (they open at 4pm for dinner). We were in town for a late dr's appt. It is like a very nice business strip building. Very clean in the area we ate. The bar is quaint. The restrooms were clean. They are open for lunch until 2 and then close and reopen for dinner. Our order: 2 waters and 2 on the rocks margaritas with 1800 tequila. The margaritas were very good. Appetizer-was fried mushrooms. There were a lot, which was more than expected for an appetizer. It was served with ranch and we asked for an additional one. They were very good and not greasy. Dinner: 1) chicken fried steak with gravy, mashed potatoes and a side salad. The cfs was good but it needed more seasoning. They were a little stingy with the gravy but it was good. The potatoes were ok-a little too creamy my husband thought. The salad was good. Just basic lettuce (green leaf lettuce not iceberg) tomato, cheese, onion and croutons with dressing. 2) was the grilled salmon with lemon capper sauce, rice pilaf and a side salad. The salmon was amazing!! It was nice and thick cut grilled perfectly. He seasoning was really good and the sauce just heightened the taste. The rice pilaf was also very good. As well as the dinner salad. Service was good. The bartender was our server. We have eaten here before but it was way before COVID started and haven't been since.
