After telling me they were going to waive the diagnosis fee, they took three hours to diagnose the problem and falsely told me I needed to get multiple different things replaced, costing over $2800. After telling them I was going to try and get a 2nd opinion, they charged me $180+ just for the diagnosis. I am now getting it fixed at another place for less than $1000. These guys are thieves!

The Background, as brief as I can make it. I drive a 2000 Toyota Camry and have since 2003 when I bought it to go to college. It may not seem like anything special. Front wheel drive, no MP3 player, no built in GPS, but it's a trooper. I've driven it through countless blizzards and at least three hurricanes. In my experience, with a good car, it'll take care of you if you take care of it. Which is why the parts inside are probably cleaner than my dashboard! Historically, I took it to a mechanic in my home town or a service center. This time, I had no choice. I suspected a problem with the brakes and didn't want to risk driving thirty miles to a mechanic I trusted. So I had to hope the few reviews I could find for this shop were accurate. And fortunately, they were! I showed up without an appointment, told him my problem (a slight grinding which had just begun the night before when slowing down) and he immediately knew the problem, and it jived with what I had been able to determine on my own, but he took my number and get back to me when he knew for sure. He called me back in less than half an hour to confirm the problem. What really got me was when he said "What really stinks about it is that your brakes are otherwise in great shape." Because of the construction all around hope street, a loose rock had somehow bounced up and broken a brake rotor. They didn't try to convince me there was something wrong with the rest of the system or anywhere else in the car at all. They also gave me an estimate that was pretty accurate (about 15 dollars off) By early afternoon, they'd called to tell me I was all set and I could pick it up on my way home. Ultimately, while it's hard to escape the impression that Stamford construction is delighting in endangering my poor car, at least I know I have a local mechanic I can trust if I need more emergency work.
