I have a mixed review for this one. I want to love Variety with all of the stars that I have, but I did have a strange encounter with one of the baristas one day... I actually asked if they were hiring, and the nice looking man said "No." I asked if I could leave my resume and he said, "People who join Variety never leave." "Sounds kind of like a cult," I laughed. He didn't. "It's a good thing," he replied. And then I gulped and ordered a coffee and tipped him because I was scared that I had just ruined my first impression at Variety - and I live in the neighborhood and I wanted this to be my coffee place. Since then I have come in and the baristas have been normal and nice. I've had to take my coffee and leave every time because there has never been a table open and most people at the tables have their laptops out (which I would too if I could get a table). Seriously, you need to step up your game if you expect to enjoy your coffee sitting down. (Hopefully that changes as the weather gets warmer and they set some chairs outside.) I think Variety coffee is playing hard to get with me. I still go there a lot since it's the closest coffee shop to my apartment... Their chocolate chip banana bread is lovely. Their coffee is also lovely. Together, the pastry and coffee are a lovely couple. Warning: Expect to take that couple home with you because there won't be a table to throw them onto and enjoy. We used to live close to the Wburg Variety, I was never a fan of their coffee (bitter and burnt) but everyone was always nice and the pastries were excellent. This morning we went to the bushwick location and ordered an almond croissant and plain croissant and two iced coffees. The baristas were super nice. The coffees were descent, still too bitter for my taste. But the croissants were AWFUL! As dry as the Sahara desert. They must have changed where they get their pastries from... I guess most people don't know how a croissant should taste?? It's not 2001 where the only good pastries in NYC were in Balthazar. Let's try a little harder guys. read more

This is my go to coffee shop. 3 others are closer to my house and I take the extra time to drink here. Its location is convenient because it's off the L. The prices are reasonable compared to places, of equal quality, in the East Village and Williamsburg. I'm not into lattes and that style of drink, but the regular pours are awesome especially when it is beans from Africa. The pastries are worth a try too, with the ham and cheese croissant making for a good breakfast. Atmosphere is typical hipsterary - with exposed brick and a turn-of-the-century rustic feel. read more

3.5 stars - keyword: today This Variety is ok, the staff (today) are kind of cold. A couple of them looked at me blindly. This is twice as big as Dweebs, so the customers are more unnoticeable here (in a good way). It seems that there are some hospital staff working here because Wyckoff Hospital is next door and I overheard a phone conversation that there wasn't enough meeting rooms there today... I felt really lucky that my friend was recommended me this place who living in this area. I had to drinking in the every morning and this place is my favorite go to place for drink coffee while I stayed at my friend house. I've been tried ice americano and latter but latter was just ok then I respected. So Ice Americano was my favorite in this place. This place is good coffee house and Batista was friendly too. I liked coffee smell and the roast on spot it smells awesome in here. When you walk around this area, you can smells it as well and that makes you to go to drink coffee. read more

This is, without a doubt, the best coffee shop in the area. They don't charge extra for non-dairy milk, and they have some great coffee. If I'm there in the morning I get the vegan banana walnut muffin along with my coffee. The staff is always friendly and efficient. The seating area is cute; I love the decor. I always try to snag a spot on the super comfy couch they have at the back. I always try to leave my apartment a little early so I can sit down and enjoy my morning coffee here. Bravo! A neighborhood coffee shop, served up simply and with a nod to the building's original architecture, is the perfect business to replace the withering Wyckoff Paints hardware store that had been here for who knows how many years. The coffee is excellent, with the espresso drinks so beautifully crafted it's almost a shame to drink them. Until you taste them, of course, and you realize that the beauty is more than skin deep. Spacious enough so that people aren't constantly bumping into you, yet cozy enough to feel comfortable, Variety hits on all cylinders. My only wish would be for it to accept credit/debit cards, or at least Venmo or some other alternate payment system. Since Variety is cash-only, I am often limited in what i can buy. Usually, I eye the amazing baked goods up front (the pumpkin muffins are excellent) but choose a handcrafted drink over both food and coffee. Otherwise, this place is as good as I could've imagined. Coffee is good, cafe is cute and spacious. Pastry selection isn't bad. The baristas are decidedly unfriendly. One kicked me and a friend out of the store for bringing in our puppy while grabbing a to-go order (we all know every coffee shop in New York allows dogs, hell some even have a tray of free dog treats near the checkout). I've been here twice and both times, Variety was busy, but quick service. Reasonable prices. My last order of the cappuccino was pretty good. I ordered a chocolate croissant and it did not have that fluffy, flaky texture, so it was a little stale. However, I still ate it because how can I deny chocolate? I don't rate based on availability of seating, but it's worth mentioning to those who plan to sit down and have a drink and/or snack while they work. The last time I went during a weekday early afternoon there was no seating. Kind of disappointing as I wanted to enjoy a cup and read, but I anticipate this occuring at popular cafes. The hot coffee was very hard to drink, the flavor was burnt and bitter. It tasted as if they let it sit too long. I was expecting so much more based on all of the other reviews. There was plenty of seating and most seats were occupied! This is a busy coffee shop! It's a great place to hang out, chat with a friend, read a book, or work on your laptop. Next time I would get an americano instead of the regular coffee. They have loose leaf tea too. I am hoping that the un drinkable coffee was a fluke and maybe it will be better next time. read more

Amazing space with plenty of seating (as of on a Sunday noontime). Coffee is decent, cold brew tasted kinda weak, but appreciated the non-dairy milks on offer (almond and oat). Baristas are pretty brusque and attitudey though, i saw oat milk at the barista counter and asked if i could take some, the barista barked at me to take the milk back to the bar bc "thats what the customer's supposed to do and the last guy just left it here". Favorite local coffee shop. Besides delicious coffee and snacks, I always can find a place to sit, they have free Wi-Fi, and a good amount of outlets. They roast their oen coffee, so it smells fantastic inside and it always tastes fresh. They don't serve food, but they do have baked goods, some vegan and gluten free too. The inside is pretty spacious with exposed brick walls, and moss growing. read more

Delicious coffee, reasonable prices (for Brooklyn). Fantastic assortment of vegan and regular (and gluten free!) pastries. I'm not vegan but I love their vegan pumpkin loaf--and their croissants are delicious too (those buttery delights are def NOT vegan!). I personally find their cold brew to taste a little off to me--but it's still better than a lot of their more expensive competitors in Williamsburg and other places. I'll take that. Ok under new management variety has gotten much better. They roast their own beans and you get your coffee quickly. As always this is the best coffee in the neighborhood for the price. I would never hangout in here because it's laptop people all in their own cocoon-like little electronic worlds. To me that's not what café life is supposed to be. The cold brew is fine. The pastries are fine. It's an average coffee place with an emphasis on the seating area. My biggest issues though? They open at 7am. This renders them useless to me. I'm not sure they understand they are a coffee shop & that's something that should be available before people start their commutes. Variety's coffee is great and their seats are excellent (outside in the summer!). It's nice and convenient even if the look didnt quite match the neighborhood when it came. But I dock it two stars because they use plastic cups and straws as if the owners didn't know we have a plastic problem and just use plastic straws because it's easy and common. They disregard that it oil companies profit off of their oil (which is also bad). read more

This café is excellent. They have a variety of things to choose from. The tea is excellent and the coffee is also pretty great. I come here often in the summertime to get their iced coffee. It has a pretty bold flavor. It's not that overpriced, but I would say the ideal price would be about $.20 less. And ice coffee runs three dollars. The atmosphere in this café is incredible and really helps the neighborhood vibe. There are always hipster like professionals and other young people sitting at The tables. It Definitely fosters a kind of community feeling. There aren't too many high-end coffee shops in the neighborhood, so this place definitely has its niche. It is open pretty late too. I have brought my mom here after dinner to have a cappuccino and we had a very nice time sitting in the front window area. The staff is excellent. They make you feel welcome and are always eager to help you with anything you need. read more

Great coffee, always an entertaining selection of hipsters on MacBook pros looking dejected and apathetic as they type away ranting about what I can only assume is their outrage of the patriarchy and how triggered they are by politics. In my head this is like the production factory for buzz feed and Huffington post. You get the full hipster experience, very immersive. Plenty of man-bun-beard combos and weirdly not at work millenials regardless of hour or day of the week. It's a very nice place to have coffee in the neighborhood. Mostly young people come here. Don't expect to see kids or family hanging around. It's perfect for getting coffee and a pastry, but don't come here if you want to have a full breakfast.
