I love coming in here to do a little work or reading on my way to my Italian class. The drinks are reasonably priced, especially if you're not getting anything too fussy, and the staff are welcoming. The natural light that pours in through the big front window really makes the space great for reading or working (though please, don't be that jerk with the laptop who takes up a table of four for hours), and the seating goes farther back than you'd think from the outside, so plenty of space. read more

I had a pleasant cup of organic chai and could see myself heading back. The service seemed a little slow on the whole and the place was crowded, but it was an enjoyable enough experience. i went to variety cafe today on new years day for the third time. the macchiato i had this morning was a bit savour,kind of earthy,with hints of purple fruits(think plums),not as smooth as a macchiato from the stumptown in the ace hotel,but a good job working with s'milk nonetheless. i first went back in august after hearing that they served stumptown,and was less than impressed with the espresso.the next time i was there for a few hours and had good espresso and an alright macchiato. the staff is really nice,it's always been all girls when i've gone which is actually pretty cool to see for baristas at a cafe(sometimes it seems like even specialty coffee is too male-dominated) i like the space of the cafe,the sign outside is nice,and i would go back.the coffee is good,just not great. read more

I love Variety. It's truly a neighborhood gem. My favorite Stumptown roast is the Hairbender...so bold and beautiful. I haven't visited the place in a while as I've been brewing my own coffee...but will surely visit again once the weather gets a bit warmer. Variety has the best iced coffee. They utilize the toddy method, using cold water to brew the coffee which yields a deep flavored beverage with a chocolate-y aftertaste. No need for sugar or milk to balance the taste. read more

Maybe I just arrived at the cafe at the perfect time, because I am shocked at the reviewers who didn't give it a high rating! I had one of the best lattes here this morning. I could actually taste pure coffee AND it was topped off with a beautiful design (even the barista was impressed)! Yeah, yeah, it's full of hipsters...blah blah blah...I'm more sick of the sad people that hate hipsters than hipsters themselves, but that doesn't influence my opinion on this place. We don't have stuff like this where I live, in wonderful East Orange, NJ. So, if you live in Williamsburg and live near this joint, consider yourself lucky. read more

Love the stumptown coffee, the wifi is undoubtedly free, love the changing artwork, but.....there's just something that makes this place OK. If you're looking for a spot to get some work done, it does the job: some tables are adjacent to power plugs which is a great. But alas, it's more of a "meeting spot," than a "hide out and get hours of work done" place. read more

It's a homely space. A workspace. The French Press is very bitter but the Jasmine Green Tea hits the spot. If you manage to snag a table, which isn't easy with everyone here working on their writing or looking for jobs, you can have yourself a productive time. Awesome coffee - stumptown and occasionally some special stuff from other great west coast coffee places! Definitely a place to visit if you're near the Graham L stop and wandering around. I love Variety, because they make the best cappuccino in Williamsburg...it's always the perfect temperature, it never needs sugar, and the foam on top has the shape of a little heart. I wonder, though, if the people at Variety think that they are giving away little gold nuggets in their coffee and that is why they charge so much money for a cup. Also, I wish they had better pastries, and a medium size (you can only get small or large, which is annoying), and their regular coffee is just ok. read more

First time I've been to Variety- casual work meeting- forgot my wallet (they don't have apple pay- maybe i should dock a star?) and the girl gave me my muffin for free even though I declined. Chai was rich and spicy, reasonably priced with decent seating. The environment was very laid back with some soft alt music playing created a chill place to get some work done. They also have a great selection of fresh loose leaf teas. I wish they had some separately made gluten-free snacks, but not many places do, I didn't really expect it. They're also open later than most cafes, which makes me happy. Will be back. read more

When I used to live in Williamsburg, the morning often conisted of the L train f-ed up = me chillin' in Variety for 1/2 hour until the morning clog let up. Weekend = me getting up, getting a bagel and rolling through to get my coffee. What can I say, I have a coffee problem. For that alone I will give this place four stars. As someone from the Pacific Northwest, I am ashamed to say I only found out about Stumptown at Variety. Don't let the alleged hipsta presence scare you - think of the coffee. Btw, their baked goods, like cran-orange muffins, are yummy too. Never used the Wi-fi, but a lot of people camp out there with their laptops and chill. read more

This coffee place has become my favorite. why? great coffee, spacious, and overall just has a nice ambience to it. Service can be hit or miss. Maybe a bit pricey but then again it seems like every food/cafe in this area is. You'd be surprised how many hours can pass by which shows how comfortable this place is. I remember when this place opened. I'm glad it's gotten I so popular. But I still wish it were my little secret. I adore the pastries and their stumptown coffees are fantastic. Also makes a mean cortado. Sadly after living in Williamsburg for 16 years, my building was sold and the douche who bought the building upped our rent several thousand dollars. So we moved to bay ridge in 2012. No Variety. No Stumptown. No pastries from whatever place you get your pastries. Please open a location in bay ridge!!!! There are lots of people and hipsters and whatever out here that truly desperately want and need you! If possible, open a place near 74th and 5th ave. read more
