I believe there was a donut shop here previously but the ownership changed. I feel like it may have been an improvement as Steve and I were very highly impressed with the half dozen of donuts that we ordered. We also got a cinnamon roll that was separate from the half dozen. All the donuts we got were great as well as the cinnamon roll! The blueberry, the chocolate frosted, and the coconut donuts I fondly remember. Definitely going back but perhaps next time it will be a full dozen than a half of one... not that I need a further excuse to get more donuts! Very good experience! read more

Variety Donuts on South Tacoma Way is a hidden gem--always fresh, super friendly, and delicious. I've passed this establishment numerous times but never thought to go until recently when my husband wanted donuts. We didn't want to drive to 6th Ave so this place was our next option. The donuts weren't too bad tasting, hence the 4 star. I like that their donuts aren't dense like other donut spots. The fritter was my favorite with the cream puff coming close to second place. The donuts are good but the lady behind the counter is rude it seems like she doesn't like her job at all, she doesn't even greet her customers when they come in. She rang me up and gave me the total for the donuts but I had to add some hot beverages for my husband and my kids but she keep sighing as she was adding it and she wanted to charge $3 each for a small cup of hot choco and it's clearly stating on her menu list that a small cup are $2. Sad I did not get a chance to taste donuts. The sign says open at 5 AM. Apple Maps says open at 5 AM. Google maps says open at 5 AM. However, I walked in at 5:06. The lady standing behind the counter, have an attitude and I walk in early saying they're not open when clearly every website says they do open at 5 AM so I calmly ask her. I've had donuts from here and the Original House of Donuts on Gravelly Lake Drive. Don't know how they do it, but they've managed to capture the exact taste of the original Lakewood Donut Shop. It's in the dough and it's exactly how I remember it growing up. Currently the Lakewood Donut Shop lost that special flavor they used to have. TBH, I have to disagree with the negative review about this place. The lady has been super nice and the donuts are buttery soft. I've tried about 4 other donut places in the lakewood and surrounding areas, and this shop takes 1sr place. I visited Variety Donuts first week she open up, Donuts are good as the last Owner's, Server was very friendly & We chatted a while about the previous Owner who I've been a Customer to since 1981. My 2nd visit Sunday 6/28 at 9:40 a.m. I left without purchasing anything. Server was slow preparing an order plus at least a half a dozen Customers waiting. Good idea to hired at another Server. I decide to visit Kolby Donuts on 150th Pacific Ave,fast friendly service 3 Customers were ahead of me. Megan, Server probably stare at you because she had a bad experience with minority group. Loved the donuts! But after the owner said out of the blue "she didn't like me"! I will not be back to buying donuts from them. Strange, that's all I can say. Never had a bad encounter with this lady at all. I inquired more thinking it was a joke and she never recanted her statement. She said, "she's just being truthful". I am so shocked at the woman at this store. I called in an order one day before. Due to some event changes, I called the morning of the pick up to change my order, not cancel but to change it. She said they can't do that esp since they already prepared the order (aka doing their job!). I told her I understand and I'll be there to pick up at my usual time. When I arrived, she ignored me. It was ghost town. So I moved to make eye contact and she looked at me and chuckled saying she gave my order away and that I don't need to buy. I was stunned and confused! I told her I'm here bc I want to buy the donuts! The racks were still very full and she was being dramatic and I called her out. She snapped "then which donuts you want?" At that point I said forget it lady, you clearly don't want my biz. Mind you, I get 4-5 dozens twice a month. This woman has no regard for customers. I Rated Variety Donuts 5 stars. This place is under new management and I believe new owners who are super friendly. If you have questions or unable to decide what to pick they are happy to guide you to a donut that is right for you. I have been here 3 times and haven't had a donut I didn't like. This place IS NOT gimmicky, you won't find donuts bigger than your car, iced with 8 layers of glaze, or hard as rocks. Instead you be pleased to find donuts that taste amazing, fresh, and soft they melt in your mouth. My wife and I have been to every donut place known for their donuts which resulted in nothing but disappointment. We found one place but it's not close by so we don't go as much as we would like. Contrary to the name this donut house doesnt carry the necessity in variety. The price for donut holes 2.5x the amount of other places and is justified by 2 extra holes. From 1.00 for 12 to 2.65 for 14. Honestly keep the extra two holes for that 1.65 more. read more
