I love Hess Bakery & Deli. They have an amazing assortment of deli meat ranging from plain flavor to smoke and picante. They have a few cheese select from my favorite is a smoked Gouda. They also offered delicious sandwiches that are named after their employees as well. The amount of imported and other food items is really wonderful. The staff are always super nice. The lines sometimes can be really long, but I think this is just a reflection of how delicious everything is. They make fresh bread every single day that usually sells out by the end of the day. Stop #3 on the Lakewood 3.0 road trip (10/19/24) was at Hess Bakery & Deli. The shared parking lot was packed on Saturday afternoon, but CC found a spot along the adjacent street. Upon entering to the right is a completely different Germanic coffee shop. That has a pastry case full of cakes and other baked items with indoor seating. Long line too. Hess Bakery & Deli is to your immediate left. Oh my this brought me back to Tüttlingen 1981 and the long shuttered Continental Deli in Seattle's UDistrict. I honed in on the cookies and chocolate aisles. There were the familiar brand pantry items, beers and other bevs, German periodicals, and wow even holiday baked items like stollen. After selecting some Milka and Ritter chocolate bars, I make a beeline to grab a number at the deli case. Number 57 was called and I got a small container of fleischsalat (bologna, pickles, and mayo) and a bologna ring from Stiglmeier Sausage Company. Onward to checkout line. The helpful counter employee explained the difference between the individuals rolls. I bought a Hess soft roll and a pretzel roll. Later at home, the Hess soft roll was perfect. I added some fleischsalat on a half slice. The other half had nicely boiled, peeled, sliced, and fried bologna. Mmmm, delicious! The Homie agreed with the same end result with the pretzel roll. While the food was delicious the blatant rudeness of one of the employees was enough to never go back. We were visiting our father who is German and wanted to take here. While we stood in line he went and sat down as he has bad knees. We were basically berated by the brunette waitress (pic attached) because we didn't read the signs that said please wait to be seated. We explained he was just sitting while we ordered and we were going to wait for them to seat us, but she basically rolled her eyes pointed at every sign and said "I mean it's all over the place but ok". If it wasn't for two of the other workers trying to make it better, we would have walked out and caused a scene. We still won't go back unless she is gone. If you can't hire people that know how to treat customers then they shouldn't be in the front. read more

Love this place! Came in for some spicy landjaeger and left with a couple more items. I do wish the spicy landjaeger had more heat, but it was still quite good. I tried a sandwich which is on bread with mustard, butter, meat, and cheese. Very simple. Very delicious. They add a good layer of butter. They have some beverages that you don't often see. I've never seen a tropical Fanta before and had to try. And, of course, I could not leave without a couple pretzels and a mustard. When at the deli section, you need to take a ticket and with multiple people working it goes by very quickly. read more

This place is an institution in Lakewood. Have been coming here since the late 80's/early 90's when our family relocated to Washington state. Having grown up in Germany, I can say that their brotchen is the only place where you can get the authentic stuff. I try to stop by here whenever I'm back in Lakewood. They also have some German candies and deli meats. I haven't tried a ton of the deli stuff but I can recommend the salami. There's also a cute little bake shop next door where you can get some cake and coffee. Highly recommended spot. read more

Wow this store had all imported German goods. What a delicacy you don't see often in the Pacific NW! They even sell pretzels and other pretzel style breads that are great when baked. Awesome little discovery! This little deli has some great products from Germany. We got two deli sandwiches on pretzel buns. They cost about $6.50 and they hit the spot! We also grabbed some fresh pretzels. They are huge! Our family shared one and got a medium size honey mustard. So good! We also picked up some yummy cookies, chocolates, and ketchup I haven't seen since I was in Germany about 20 years ago! The staff is friendly which makes all of it even better. If you want good German food then this a good place to go. The grocery store has a great deli counter with good selections. Their pretzels are great and come in various sizes. The big one is really big. Across the hall is the bakery. It smells good and what they have is an awesome selection of baked goods (fresh breads, and pastries and cakes) that you want to get one of everything. But don't so you have reason to return like we will. Service is over the top and very welcoming. The bakery especially so. Fresh German salami is delicious. I don't think I'll buy salami at the grocery store again! Pretzels are good, probably better if hot. Gotta have that mustard too. Across the hallway there's a bakery counter/restaurant. That's where you can get sweets. Lots of cakes and pastries! Today the special was Creamy Mushroom soup to go. I was sorely disappointed when I got home. It lacked flavor, barely any mushrooms, and it was watery. Not very appealing! Luckily, I was at home so I salvaged it by adding more mushrooms, seasoning, and a bit of orzo in a pot to recook and thicken. I hope they do serve really good mushroom soup and today was a fluke. Otherwise, all the cakes I've tried have been just the right amount of sweetness for me. If you like overly sweet cakes this isn't the place. But the ingredients and fillings are super fresh. I absolutely love this family owned German scratch-bakery! There is quite a selection of imported goods and during the holiday time they update their Facebook when they received shipments of advent calendars, etc. The first time I came here I just got different goodies in the grocery area and they were all amazing. The next time I was dying to try their deli and wow it did not disappoint. All the employees are so friendly and patient. The pretzel roll sandwich I got from the deli was only $6 and it included: a pretzel roll, mustard, butter, cheese of my choice and meat of my choice. It was so amazing I wish I got 2. This place was such a great find! A German friend of mine who lives in the area found herself in a precarious position, injured and bedridden and unable to get away from me and the boxes of German sweets I brought her every week to cheer her up. This place has an amazing selection from savory items for the perfect cheese board to sweets you can't turn down. Chocolates and wines oh my! Good breads (so I'm told, there is nothing gluten free for me in here unfortunately) and great sandwiches that my friend enjoyed. I also was thrilled to discover some rather hard to find German packaged items to make cooking special treats for the husband of mine even easier. Since he grew up in Germany he still has many favorite recipes from his childhood..I unfortunately don't read German and then of course there's the math conversion from metric units and don't even get me started on my relationship with math. I luckily found a packaged mix making the husband's favorite himbeerkuchen cake much easier to put together. We have been going to Hess's Deli for DECADES! Why buy expensive deli meat from the regular stores counter or packaged stale bologna?
