Stop #3 on the Lakewood 3.0 road trip (10/19/24) was at Hess Bakery & Deli. The shared parking lot was packed on Saturday afternoon, but CC found a spot along the adjacent street. Upon entering to the right is a completely different Germanic coffee shop. That has a pastry case full of cakes and other baked items with indoor seating. Long line too. Hess Bakery & Deli is to your immediate left. Oh my this brought me back to Tüttlingen 1981 and the long shuttered Continental Deli in Seattle's UDistrict. I honed in on the cookies and chocolate aisles. There were the familiar brand pantry items, beers and other bevs, German periodicals, and wow even holiday baked items like stollen. After selecting some Milka and Ritter chocolate bars, I make a beeline to grab a number at the deli case. Number 57 was called and I got a small container of fleischsalat (bologna, pickles, and mayo) and a bologna ring from Stiglmeier Sausage Company. Onward to checkout line. The helpful counter employee explained the difference between the individuals rolls. I bought a Hess soft roll and a pretzel roll. Later at home, the Hess soft roll was perfect. I added some fleischsalat on a half slice. The other half had nicely boiled, peeled, sliced, and fried bologna. Mmmm, delicious! The Homie agreed with the same end result with the pretzel roll. Talk about muscle memory about culinary flavors from 43 years ago. Thanks Hess Bakery & Deli for such an unexpected experience!

While the food was delicious the blatant rudeness of one of the employees was enough to never go back. We were visiting our father who is German and wanted to take here. While we stood in line he went and sat down as he has bad knees. We were basically berated by the brunette waitress (pic attached) because we didn't read the signs that said please wait to be seated. We explained he was just sitting while we ordered and we were going to wait for them to seat us, but she basically rolled her eyes pointed at every sign and said "I mean it's all over the place but ok". If it wasn't for two of the other workers trying to make it better, we would have walked out and caused a scene. We still won't go back unless she is gone. If you can't hire people that know how to treat customers then they shouldn't be in the front.

This was an amazing accidental find. Wonderful selection, tasty treats, and for as busy as they get, very quick service. I highly recommend their sandwiches on a roll. And their landslager and kilometer is fantastic. Also, they have pretzel rolls which are a personal favorite of mine.

Wow this store had all imported German goods. What a delicacy you don't see often in the Pacific NW! They even sell pretzels and other pretzel style breads that are great when baked. The deli in the back also has a huge assortment of uncooked sausages. If you're looking for European snacks, come here!

Awesome little discovery! This little deli has some great products from Germany. We got two deli sandwiches on pretzel buns. They cost about $6.50 and they hit the spot! We also grabbed some fresh pretzels. They are huge! Our family shared one and got a medium size honey mustard. So good! We also picked up some yummy cookies, chocolates, and ketchup I haven't seen since I was in Germany about 20 years ago! The staff is friendly which makes all of it even better. Definitely check it out!

The pastries are delicious! Can't wait to come back and try more. The biggest downside is that they charge you extra for using debit & credit cards. That's unfair and illegal

I usually go here for pretzel rolls and landoaeger. This last trip I noticed the pretzel rolls no longer had enough salt on the outside .

I felt like a kid in a toy store, completely amazed as I explored every aisle. Everything is thoughtfully organized and visually appealing, with products neatly arranged and prices clearly displayed, making it easy (and honestly way too fun) to shop. The variety here is incredible--I wasn't even planning to buy groceries, but somehow walked out spending $130 without a second thought! The selection is what really blew me away. From snacks and drinks to a wide range of meats and fresh, prepared foods, there's something for everyone. I was especially excited to find pork jowl (which I've struggled to find in stores even before moving to Washington), along with sashimi-grade fish and even live seafood. It truly felt like a food lover's wonderland. I managed to resist the bakery and beauty section near checkout this time--but only barely because my hands were full. I'll definitely be back for those on my next visit! H Mart is located in a plaza with several other Asian businesses, which made the whole experience feel even more authentic. Parking is plentiful, though it can get pretty packed and busy, so just be mindful of cars constantly coming and going. I only interacted briefly with the cashier, but she was kind and welcoming, and I really appreciated how neatly she packed my groceries. I don't live in Lakewood, but this trip was 100% worth it--and I will absolutely be coming back!

As a Filipino who has family that makes restaurant quality food, he is picky with his food but he said the flavors here are pretty close to how his family cooks it. I am always on the hunt for good kare kare and I saw they serve it so I was already super excited to go. We arrived around 1ish pm and we were able to find parking and enter inside where we saw three tables occupied with happy customers enjoying their meals. They have small tables and large tables, but definitely plan ahead as most of these tables seat 2-4 people. They have a section at the left end of the order area where you drop off dirty dishes in bins as well as a condiments section. They were playing some American pop songs that were remixed but it fit the vibe of the place. Additionally, they do have a grocery side which I definitely want to check out next time I'm there. We were greeted warmly by the owner who was cheerful and patient with us. My boyfriend got their longganisa and lumpia and he was asked if he wanted adobo sauce on his rice which I thought was neat! Now, here is where my complaints from as I was not offered the same treatment on my rice, told that they aren't serving kare kare, they don't have labels for the food at front, and some of the food was cold. I got the pork sinigang and dinakdakan which was pretty good and flavorful. They do have pastries, desserts and other offerings as well. It seemed like there are many regulars who come often as the owner would recognize and have friendly conversations with them. He also bid us farewell when we left while he was taking a quick lunch break, and I thought that was really sweet.
