Definitely a college pizza place. Grabbed a slice of chicken bacon ranch and bbq chicken. The bbq chicken was good. Sauce is the same as my favorite place at home so I was happy. The chicken bacon ranch was however not so good. Really soggy and the ranch portion was missing. It was more just a chicken and bacon white pizza. All in all, for 6$ a person for 2 slices and a can of soda, not bad. A coworker got the hot chicken and gravy sandwich with mashed potatoes. Looked bomb diggity . If I went again that's probably what Ill get as well. As for seating, plan on being packed in like sardines. Also be prepared to wipe your table down as many of the college kids can't handle throwing out their own plates and not making a mess. read more

We ordered there for lunch for work. I called ahead to make sure they could do Buffalo chicken tenders and they said yes. I called back a few minutes later to place the order. We got back to work and they were regular tenders. I called about it the lady apologized and asked what I wanted her to do and I asked did they have anyone delivering, she said not for at least another hour Which wasn't going to work. I asked just for a refund and she said they couldn't do refunds only credit for the next time. She then said she'd get a manager. The manager was just argumentative about it and told me we at least were only charged for regular tenders. I said that was beside the point, that I didn't order this. She asked if I wanted to bring it back because they're not supposed to do refunds without bringing it back. I said well if I could bring it back I would just get them dipped.. I'm working now I can't bring it back. She said well next time you come in we'll hook you up and I said well this isn't somewhere we order frequently so I'd really just rather have my money back. Then it was a debate about the receipt and if we don't have it they probably can't do it but we weren't given one. Ultimately, I still didn't even get my money back because they apparently can't give refunds without the owner there. Which is unreal to me How an establishment that's been around for so long cant do a refund for $10 without the owner. She said she'd call us if and when the owner came in today but doesn't know when they're going to come and they don't come everyday. So I'm just stuck with food I didn't order, and a waiting game on my money back. And then the one slice of CBR I also got the chicken tasted so old. Just overall not a good experience. read more

I really enjoyed my dining experience at Varsity Pizza. My friends and I stopped by on our way home from class for some pizza. The service was excellent; the employees were friendly and the pizza slices were hot and ready when we arrived. It's a great environment for a college restaurant with college-friendly prices too. This is a restaurant that is meant for college kids and I probably would have really enjoyed the ambiance had I been a college kid, but I'm not. Nevertheless it was a fun place to have a quick lunch. Rude, Rude, Rude!!!! I went to Varsity Pizza on a lunch break from a seminar on 3/20/14 because I'd heard they had good pizza. The pizza was just ok (super-greasy and tiny slices), but what I really want to tell people about is the service. I ordered a cheese slice, a garlic slice & a bottled water. The garlic slice wasn't ready, so I was handed my plain slice & bottle of water and was herded down the line to pay. When I got there, the rudest girl I've ever had the displeasure of meeting told me my order was $3.20. When I replied that I had another slice coming, she said "AND NOW I'M A MIND READER!" in a very sarcastic tone. She then told me my new total was $5.20. I handed her my money and dared to ask for a receipt, but she'd already moved on to the next customer, so was clearly inconvenienced by my outrageous request. She started to slam on her register, jabbing her finger angrily at the screen, all the while singing "Jingle Bells." In between verses, she jabbered on very loudly about this person who wants a receipt and "NOW I HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE WHOLE SYSTEM TO FIND IT AND I DON'T HAVE IT! I DON'T HAVE IT!!!" To this I replied "forget it, then" and left the counter area to await my 2nd slice of pizza. How is someone this obnoxious allowed to be a front line service person? I hope the manager reads this review and fires her. Completely unacceptable behavior for any employee in any industry. read more

Varsity pizza is a staple on the Syracuse University campus, as told by Cuse Alum. During my visit to the campus last weekend I happened to stop in and see what made this establishment so special to the campus. Varsity has been open and operating for over 5 decades, which is incredible! The deep rooted history makes Varsity a quintessential classic on campus. I stopped in with a group of friends on a Sunday afternoon in search of wings and beer. A friend recommended we check out Varsity because their food is always good. Upon walking in, I felt the strong retro type of vibe that they have going on. The walls are painted blue and orange (traditional Syracuse colors) and lined with sports action shots from generations before. The tables are setup in long rows with 50's style metal chairs. If you are looking for a place where you are catered to, then Varsity Pizza is not your kind of place. There is no wait staff that comes over to the table to take your order, you are your own waiter. You walk to the back of the restaurant where you will find a service counter manned by multiple employees who are waiting to take your order. Above the counter is a large board that lists all of their offerings. From left to right, the salad bar has a variety of fresh ingredients to chose from to that would create your ideal mix. Next in line you will find the soda machines where you will be asked to what size and type of drink you would like (beer included!). The fountain sodas range and the beer offerings are the typical regional offers of Labatt Blue, Blue Light, and Budweiser heavy. Water is free and self serve, if soda or beer are not your poison of choice. Towards the end of the area is where you place orders for things that come from the grill such as wings, fries, etc. At the end of the counter you will find a variety of kettle cooked chips and baked goods. If you are looking for a whole pizza or even just a slice, Varsity can hook it up! Located in the front corner of the restaurant is an specific area dedicated for pizza. The pizza can be ordered and paid for right in that same area, so there is no worries about walking back and forth. I find the setup to be really cool and adds to the experience. In terms of the value of the food, you cannot beat it. For an order of 20 wings it came out to be $14.95, what a good deal. Not to mention, the Labatt drafts are 2 for $6, say what?! A great way to indulge in the locale campus culture on a Sunday. My overall opinion of the place is that it is great. A classic on campus and I am happy to have been able to experience it. We stopped into Varsity for breakfast on a Tuesday morning. I know, not pizza, but you definitely get your money's worth! We got omelets and home fries; both served hot and delicious! It felt like a true college restaurant that had been near campus forever! As a big SU sports fan, I loved looking at the old posters and photos on the wall. Everyone there was very friendly. What happened to my once great Varsity???!!!! I h e been coming to the Varsity since 1982 as a student and most recently with my daughter on a college recruiting visit. Pizza, wings and beer/soda! That is my Varsity-- not a salad, wrap. Etc hodgepodge. I don't really care about what others eat but don't mess with the sacred wing sauce-- my visit yesterday was terrible. So sad to see the wing sauce become so bad. Wings were cooked perfectly but that sauce was no good. On a positive not the pizza was a bit better. Regarding the football banners-- after the season, especially a bad one-- flip then back around. Don't mess with tradition. (And lose the paper basketball banners) In summary the big greasy looking cook was not there and he must have taken the wing sauce with him read more

pizzaaaaaa! the tomato and feta (which everyone else has already raved about) is super tasty and the very greasy plain slice was... very greasy (we're talking 3-4 sopping napkins full of oil). totally dig the hefty crust- makes for a more substantial meal. prices are phenomenal which is such a gift given that these guys are in a prime location and could total charge more. looking forward to many more trips to varsity in the near future! read more

This is such a chill place. I love places with a history/ old school feel. Everything is orange & blue and pictures of great sports moments decorate the walls. You can't go to Syracuse University without stopping by this place. It has a great atmosphere for game day and you should be here when the marching band plays when the football team wins. I went very excited after hearing good things about this restaurant. I ordered a simple turkey sandwich and it seemed like the staff didn't even know it was on the menu. I told them I wanted it hot and assumed it would come with simple things like lettuce and tomato, but when it came it was just a few slices of turkey with french fries all drenched in gravy. Who puts gravy like that on a sandwich? When I told them I did not want gravy they looked at me like I was an idiot. When they agreed to remake the sandwich for me without gravy, it was cold and tasted like cardboard. Would not recommend unless you know for sure there is something you want and something you like. The lines for wraps and sandwiches are the same, but not, which makes the ordering process much harder than it needs to be. The pizza is also on the whole other side of the restaurant. read more

I was a little skeptical from the outside, but this place is great for late lunch and on days where you're indecisive. Keep in mind this is literally right next to campus and the hospitals, so if you're going during peak hours it can get incredibly busy There's a great variety of options, from cold deli, hot food, and pizza. The beef stew is top notch, and last weeks bbq pulled pork special was fantastic. Great value for the amount of food you get, and the staff has always been friendly. read more

Definitely frequented this establishment quite a bit during my freshman and sophomore years in graduate school. It has pretty decent lunch for a reasonable price. It is located by SU and the SUNY Upstate campuses. I have had numerous items on their menu over time that have been good. Seating is cafeteria style so don't expect much. In terms of pizza, they definitely lose to M street pizza on Marshall. Not my choice of place for lunch given a variety of different places to eat nearby. read more

Went there on a Friday night where it wasn't packed which was surprising and there was a line around 4 people and we ordered some slices of pepperoni which they said would take 15 minutes more like 25 before they called up people for pepperoni which by the time my friends got their slices I go up only to be told I had to wait another 10 minutes for another pepperoni where I just screw it and would get food someone else but stayed for my friends where my friend who ordered a gluten free pizza gets called up only to be told it's not gluten free when he specifically said for it to be and when told it would take 15 minutes for a gluten free he asked for a refund where the employee got mad about when they were the ones that messed up and overall they just didn't seem like they wanted to be and were all mopping around if I was there Manager they wouldn't have a job there anymore read more

Varsity is a great place to go if you're looking for a quick and inexpensive meal that tastes pretty good. I did not try the pizza, which of course is what they are known for, but the hot sandwiches and french fries were very tasty. A friend of mine got a chicken wrap and wasn't too crazy about the how the chicken tasted, but she herself even admitted to being a very picky eater, so take her experience with a grain of salt. They were very accommodating when it came to my meal, allowing me to add whatever I wanted to my Grilled Cheese. I had conversations with a few of the workers and they were very friendly, especially the cashier and the owner. Overall, the food fulfills your stomach, without hurting your wallet, in a fun Syracuse atmosphere that can't be beat! read more

Yes, I love the Varsity Pizza but things have recently changed. After years of weekly trips for their famous Spinach Feta and Tomato pizza I arrived to find the main pizza chef, John, is no longer employed with Varsity and was told this high-demand item (Spinach/Tomato/Feta) wasn't available due to my time of arrival (8:15pm when they close at 10:30pm) and possible waste for unsold pizza beyond my order. Now we always order 4 slices of an 8 slice pie and they would have 1.5hr to sell the rest! The remaining choices were old and cold but we took some anyway. They weren't worth the trip. My advise is they make amends with head Pizza Chef, John, because he not only makes a better product but was way more customer conscientious. The atmosphere and product were really a disappointment. Varsity Pizza is located just steps away from the Syracuse University campus, perfect for students and for Syracuse sports fans on game day. I've gone on numerous occasions, many times with my friends to grab a quick slice of pizza, as well as on game days to experience the atmosphere, and I've always had a good experience. I'd personally recommend the buffalo chicken pizza, it's my friends' and my staple and that's what we got when I went today. The only downside was today the pizza was cold and hard when we got it, and it's much better when it's warm and fresh out of the oven. Overall, I'd definitely recommend stopping in, whether it be on a basketball or football game day or not. read more
