I ate a $77 fee for an estimate - which no plumber or contractor of any kind has ever asked me for - because the ratings for Vaughan are so high. I feel conned, for two reasons. One, as soon as they showed up they began acting like they didn't want the work. They balked at the fact that I live in a condo within a 3-unit HOA that I would need to coordinate with, and argued with me about the process of gaining their approval (while the numerous contractors we jointly hired for our renos were walking around.) This is 99% of plumbing jobs in Somerville. If it's that much of a problem, don't bother coming in the first place to charge me $77. Second, the estimate price: astronomical. Twice as much as the most expensive quotes I have gotten for this job. Five figures. If you are a very rich owner of a single-family home, Vaughan might be an option - the ratings here say they are talented plumbers. Otherwise, save yourself the money, hassle, and headache. read more

They turned out to be a no show. When contacted the owner admitted to forgetting. But instead of offering a reasonable way to compensate for the frustration of "forgetting" the appointment they offered to show up but still charge a ridiculous amount for a simple project. Also neglected to provide an estimate of what the job would have cost. I understand not wanting to give information to someone who is just shopping around. But come on. Don't make that assumption. And at least give a range so that a customer has an idea of what to expect. Their website also claims same day service. Not borne out by this experience. read more

Props to Greg who answered my desperate plea for a cost estimate on an untimely garbage disposal leak and unit replacement. While I did not use his actual services, it's clear from the positive reviews and from his highly responsive, thorough, and professional correspondence that this is someone who clearly knows his stuff and is detail oriented (all things you want in a good plumber). As part of my request for cost estimate I sent him a photo of my issue and even though I wasn't able to afford his services he alerted me to some additional problems I wasn't even aware of. Basically, not only did I have a leaking disposal, the way the dishwasher was connected to the disposal was incorrect and had he not told me that, I would soon have to deal with a destroyed dishwasher too. A technician showed up exactly in the time window I was given, he was impressively knowledgeable out lining the different options I inquired about and inspected the existing plumbing. The. estimate he gave was very reasonable (and better than what my neighbors had paid one and three years ago for the same units with similar set up). I hired Vaughan plumbing to repair burst pipes and had this company for a couple of years for my houses. The last time I hired this company, the technician did sloppy job in finishing up. He opened metal covers for heating pipe throughout the house to repair burst pipe but left end caps and metal covers bended and did not put endcaps back. So many rooms still have sharp metal edges of the metal covers and endcaps sticking out. After many requests over many months, the owner finally send back a technician but he fixed them all. Since it was rented apartment, I did not find out until later that the technician did not put back several end caps. Moreover, Greg billed around $300 for his technician's return visit. I told him that it was a follow up visit to put back end caps he left undone. but Greg accused me saying I was expecting everything free. I I paid him close to $4000 for the plumbing work and he did not supervise his technician's initial job or follow up visit. to ensure the job was done right. Instead he got all mixed up without treasure or secretary. Greg also repeated bills for which I paid months ago on the spot. Instead of checking it out himself, he demanded a proof. I had rto spend a couple of hours to get the copy of the credit card payment. I still have multiple endcaps that are not properly installed and sharp metal edges are sticking out in each bedroom and living room. At no time Greg made apology. read more

Couldn't have been happier given the circumstances. Our boiler cut out in the middle of a cold snap and after looking around the neighborhood, I'm happy I picked Vaughan. Our boiler was completely shot and needed to be replaced. During the first visit, they tried everything they could to at least hold me over till the new boiler arrived. As a first time homeowner and new to the area, I was very nervous about being in a situation where I had to deal with a dead boiler in the dead of winter. They answered all my questions, were very professional, great to talk to, and unusually courteous (which is a wonderful thing. I appreciate a business that really cares about their customers). They even went out of their way to make sure that the room was clean before they left and little stuff like that says a lot about the people who work for a business. Vaughan's plumbing is the real deal! I called them to look at a slow draining tub and leak in my basement to get a second opinion from them after having plumbers from A different company come by and not Be able to resolve the issue for me. Once Chris from Vaughan's showed up I knew I called the right guys. First off, Chris was right on time. Which is always important (first plumbers I used rescheduled on me twice and showed up 2 hours late) Second, first plumbers that came by before I called Vaughan's said my tub couldn't be snaked for some obscure reason and Chris was able to snake it without any issues at all Third, first plumbers that came by said that because they couldn't snake they had to cut out over 1ft of pipe to snake and fix my leak. that didn't need to be done, Chris was able to snake from the tub like I mentioned earlier and the leak was coming from a rotted trap so Chris was able to cut out the rotted trap and replace the trap only to fix my leak. Chris was really professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. He made sure to explain to me everything he was doing and I would not hesitate at all to use Vaughan's service again in the future (as a matter of fact I plan on calling them back in a few weeks to install a utility sink for me in my basement) and will be recommending Vaughan's to any friends and family moving forward! The drain pipe in my 2nd floor bath was cracked and leaking into the basement. I got estimates from 2 other local companies who are rated highly on Yelp and Google. One wouldn't give me an estimate unless I cut my wall and ceiling open first. (oh and they charged just to come out.) The other gave an estimate that was way off while he was trying to upselling me on other work. Greg was quick to respond, sent George and Sam over. They gave me a reasonable estimate, was upfront about the work required and what I needed to do to prepare. Days later, they came and did the job. They were super clean, very professional and really nice. On top of the great work, they charged me less than the estimate and even replaced my water hose spigot. I wasn't really very happy with last job. When I called I told them I had two slow drains in bathroom (sink and tub) and had already tried snaking them myself with power auger. They came and were able to unclog the sink but after snaking tub they said they couldn't improve it and in fact the drain got significantly worse after they left probably because they pushed more debris into blocked pipe. Before leaving they referred me to another company that uses pressure to unclog drains but sent full bill. Now I have to call another contractor for the same problem and pay them too. read more

Well, our plumber was good and fixed the problem, but $1660 for 4 hours work and $50 worth of parts, over $400 an hour, is way out of line. It wasn't brain surgery and we did all the wall and floor demolition beforehand to allow direct access to the pipe. It wasn't even two plumbers. They would have charged me an extra $800 for that demolition, less than two hours of unskilled labor. My electricians come in pairs for $120 an hour. If you have money to throw away, be my guest. Otherwise, get estimates in advance from reputable companies. read more

Fast response, good diagnosis of the issues and quick repairs - there was a suspected leak under our dishwasher and the sink food disposal was busted. I sent an email request to Greg at 7PM on a Sunday night, heard back from him in an hour and had a plumber (Sean) here by 12PM the next day (even earlier than quoted!) We had an issue where our bath faucet just wasn't releasing water. I messaged and they had two men out to help the very same day! They were so nice and quickly identified the problem (the guy who flipped our house cut corners and used some type of foam to seal the faucet, which caused it to get clogged overtime).
