Engaging Boston Standard for HVAC installation in my home turned out to be an experience marred by unmet expectations, property damage, communication gaps, and clear oversights in installation standards. Some of the damage to areas of the house caused by Boston Standard' sloppy installation and inefficiencies in the operation of the two heat-pump systems remain unsolved a year after we hired the company. Given my exchanges with their team and the issues I faced, I feel the need to share a detailed account of my experience for the benefit of future customers. To begin with, after a few days of installation, we faced serious issues. There was a conspicuous absence of professionalism which resulted in my family enduring a record heat wave with no AC and navigating a sea of damage in the house. We had at least three different crews of technicians and each unveiled issues in the installation of the previous one. In the several days process, the hardwood floors, and walls, both redone and painted not longer than a month before, were severely damaged (some pictures attached). I have detailed documented evidence of these lapses, including conditions in which they left our home after work without finishing the planned work and, consequently, leaving us with no AC. Each technician would come with a different perspective about what needed to be done and each would point to bad techniques and mistakes that the previous one made. Despite several visits by their technicians post-installation, it has taken a year for them to identify critical flaws. This negligence has resulted in instances where we have had no AC or heat. The last issue, which resulted in our attic flooding, causing extensive damage to walls, ceilings, and a room (see pictures), revealed improperly installed drain lines and the omission of a float switch in one of the systems. After installation, large sections of our house had to be repainted, and two areas of the wooden floors needed redoing. While the company tried to solve some of the issues by sending a repair contractor, we were forced to hire our own contractors, whose the company reimbursed us, because the repairs that they did were limiting to clean the walls with wet pads and retouch the holes in the floor. Throughout this ordeal, the company's communication was lackluster. I consistently felt left in the dark, navigating a sea of mixed messages and unfulfilled promises. While challenges can arise in any project, it's the handling of such challenges that defines a company's professionalism and customer care. Boston Standard's approach left much to be desired. The lack of clarity and inconsistent information regarding the progress of the project further compounded the issue. We were taken aback by Boston Standard's apparent strategy of having the customer endure the consequences of their apparent lack of preparedness. While they claim to prioritize the customer, my experience suggests otherwise. As evidenced in email exchanges with the project and installation managers, even when they tried to explain their challenges and adjustments to meet timelines, the tone lacked empathy or a genuine apology for the inconvenience caused. There was an underlying suggestion that we, as the customers, should have somehow anticipated these problems. Lastly, while Boston Standard may tout its ability to adjust and make last-minute changes to meet customer needs, our experience suggests that these adjustments come at a cost to the client, both in terms of time and peace of mind. It's not just about completing the job; it's about the journey and the trust built along the way. Unfortunately, our case, that trust was deeply eroded. For anyone considering Boston Standard for their HVAC needs, I hope that this information helps them avoid similar problems. This experience has been a poignant reminder of the vast difference between promised service standards and delivered quality.

I needed a simple repair of changing the spout for my bathtub because the diverter had gone bad. I…read morerequested a quote from several plumbers. All responded fairly quick (within an hour) and I had given enough information and pictures so they all knew exactly what was needed. I received quotes all the way up to 175/hour plus parts to 225 parts included. Others even wanted to come by and charge me to look at the job to quote me (which they said the fee would be waived if I used them for the job after..but seriously?). Mark responded to call him and leave him a voicemail explaining I had contacted him via a message and he would call me back. He called back within 10 minutes of me leaving the message and spoke to me on the phone. He thanked me for the detailed pictures and asked if I was handy at all as this was a very simple job and he didnt want me to pay a large sum for such a simple job. He said he would come if I still wanted him to but explained everything I would have to do and where to go get the parts. He even said if I get stuck I can call him to come over. The part was cheap around 20 dollars and the work involved seems super simple (I watched some videos on youtube on how to do this). I havent fixed it yet as I am waiting for the part but i am confident now thanks to his information and knowing I can call him if I need him to come for the job. Its hard to find good contractors for work such as this and I am keeping his number for any future jobs.

Mark is a great plumber with an extensive history of experience and is your "go to" local plumber…read morefor all your residental needs. He is generally very helpful with knowledge and good with talking through planned permit work or a good story to boot. He just recently installed the final touch for a whole home portable backup generator at my home, a new 3/4in gas line basement run to supply the generator (or maybe a deck grill someday), the inspector was very accomodating and approved the work quickly! He has also previously helped with regular maintenance like water heater anode rod replacement and a few gate to ball valve replacements for leaky or seized water valves. See photos below of the gas line connection and whole home portable backup generator setup. Apparently it's "unusual" here in MA to have whole home portable backup power (Costco bargain!), everyone is told a $15k concrete slab generator is the minimum, at least, that is what Castle Electric said to me! Do it yourself for a 1/3rd of the cost with Marks help and skip the upselling from the "other" options out there!
