We recently switched to this vet because Vetco at Petco was unreliable and not even open 1/2 of the time. The big difference is that they are much more expensive than vetco but they also provide more comprehensive services. Our appointment was efficient and there was no pressure to buy anything extra or get more shots than we wanted. The vet we saw was friendly and my puppy liked her which is a huge plus. it gives us peace of mind to know we have a reliable vet now that we can call for things like ear infections or anything else when needed! read more

I have been taking all my pets to the VCA for decades. They've always been helpful and courteous. My husband took our new pup in for an appointment. He called to check in and they said someone would be right out ... after almost a half an hour he called again and said someone would be right out. About five minutes later a woman came out, he thinks was a volunteer. He told her "I'm sure it's not your fault, but they shouldn't say someone's coming right out if they're not or if there is a delay they should notify you". The volunteer didn't say a word she took the puppy walked in and told The doctor that my husband called her a bitch. I can't imagine why she would say that because my husband absolutely would never have said that in 1 million years. Then to add insult to injury, the doctor came out and said I don't appreciate you calling my helper a bitch. He told the vet that he absolutely did not call her that name. Then they called him on his cell phone and said would he be bringing our pet back for the next appointment or would you rather go somewhere else! I can't imagine the motivation for the helper to go in and say that. But it looks like she got the results she wanted. Maybe she was having a bad day but that's absolutely no excuse to do something like that! I've always loved the VCA and I will continue going there. But, I will keep a record of exactly what is being said so this can't happen again. I guess the saying goes... There's a rotten apple in every bunch. read more

However, I found its nails were bleeding because somebody unprofessionally clipped ALL the nails. I can't believe this happened to my cat. The technicians and doctors here repeatedly exceed my expectations. Everyone is very sensitive and kind, and looking out for my elderly cats. I've been working closely with Dr. Annie Wang for years now, and she is the only doctor I will bring my cats to. She is extremely conscientious of my funds, balancing that with what's best for my cats. She always tells me a few different options, asks for my opinion, and listens very carefully. Everything is clear and easy to understand. Even when my cats are a little mean at the vet, she still treats them like they are her only patients - with kindness, attentiveness, and care. The techs are great too - patient, friendly, and kind. The new remodel looks great, the ladies at the counter are wonderful and friendly, and they take great notes for the vets when they are busy. I always hear back promptly, as well. The pharmacy is flexible - always get the meds before 24 hours. They even double the meds for me so I don't have to drive out that way so frequently for refills. read more

I'm not sure why it costs $90 to even walk in the door to be seen by someone, even if just for a simple vaccine. They'd rather not have people bring in their pets to be seen because people can't afford it. Please think about how much we love our animals and don't take advantage of that fact. Just had a five star experience - very grateful for the great staff and veterinarians. Two cats were refusing the prescribed medication AND THEN their meals. Hey, maybe it was our fault because we crushed the pills and added it to their food, but a call to the VCA got a quick, helpful and caring response. The staff was helpful, suggesting a liquid form of the medication, but I felt like I needed to speak with the vet first. The vet called shortly thereafter, with an easy to understand explanation, and ordered the liquid of the same meds for the same day pick up. When I arrived, there was no charge, it was a simple but thoughtful gesture, and then our boys (the cats) took the meds like champs and are still eating. Thank you VCA! read more

Recently we brought our cat in for a skin irritation, and Dr. P had lots of good info and suggestions for how to treat the allergy. Her manner with all of our cats is always calm and soothing. They are outstanding as an emergency hospital. They know their stuff. I have always felt like they were a well oiled business. They need to pay for their student loans too. So do your due diligence when bringing your pet in and don't allow yourself to be pressured into shots, medication, or procedures you didn't go there for. They do respect your firm no. It might help for you to purchase pet insurance so affording good care is available. This hospital does good quality work. I have had dog and cat care here for over fifteen years. I've never had an issue with abbott. They've returned my phone calls at a reasonable time, given advice to save me a visit. Every time I bring my dog for a visit, the staff is extremely friendly. They always know how to handle my dog with care. Today he had a visit and we checked in a little early, thankfully we didn't have to wait until 6:30 and they were able to bring him in a room at 6 pm. The Dr. Wang came almost immediately after we were brought in and addressed some behavior concerns I've had with him, she suggested a few tips and places to be seem. We have been bringing our cat and puppy here since the beginning of their adorable lives, which would be over two years. We couldn't be happier with the service, timeliness, customer service, and overall kindness they bring to each visit. Our 6 month old puppy is getting neutered and the very sweet receptionist, Margot, called me just to let me know she checked in on him and how sweet of a puppy he is. I have received this type of customer service from everyone that works there. They always check in, send reminders, and do it all with a big smile. Just finished my first visit- an emergency visit. My little dog was bit, and while it didn't look bad at first, it was clear this morning she need to see a doctor. So, I am that jerk that probably screwed up the schedule. Sorry about it, but the doctor and vet techs prioritize based on urgency. So count your lucky stars it wasn't you this time. I am feeling a bit salty about it after seeing the staff get yelled at when someone had to wait a mere 20 minutes due to other emergencies, including a dog being put to sleep- indicated by an electric candle with a note alerting you to the situation & asking for quiet. (Brilliant idea) The staff was kind, professional and handled all of it so well. It was completely undeserved. From the front office, the doctor and vet techs- my experience was great and most importantly, my dog is getting great care. It's 2 days later, my dog is doing great, and I just got a really nice follow up call to check in on us. I am so happy with the entire staff! read more

If you want to get your rabbit spayed/neutered, don't go there! To get our little rabbit spayed, we waited for 6 months and only got a 'physical check up', which cost 70$. We waited for another 2 months, but one day before the surgery, we received a voicemail that the doctor doesn't want to come to the office tomorrow and we got rescheduled to 3 months later! I got the feeling that they don't really have a doctor who can spay rabbits, although they charge 475$ for the surgery. Now our sweet little rabbit turned into a horny and aggressive one. We love our rabbit, but really angry at this place! read more

We've used Abbott for several years, but I think we're done with them for a couple of reasons: The first is price. They are quite expensive, and I completely understand that vets go through lots of training and need to be adequately compensated for their services. I get that and support that. However, Abbott's prices are more than what other area vets are. I wouldn't mind paying, if it weren't for the second reason. The second reason is the much, much more serious one. My 10 year old, otherwise healthy, happy neutered cat, has diabetes. His spayed sister is on the tipping point. I used Purina cat food with them when they were little because that's what I used growing up. It's made in the US, so there's less risk of poison in the food. However, my girl cat started getting regular, seasonal UTIs. Abbott, after several visits totaling several hundred dollars, told me it was the food. Well, to be honest, that makes sense. Why not? Junk food = illness. So I started paying about $30/month for their Hill's Prescription Diet brand cat food. It's widely available, but only by prescription. You CANNOT purchase it without one. That and its strong recommendation by the vet must mean it's good, right? It's actually approved by someone, somewhere, who knows more than me! Well, it DID clear up the seasonal UTIs, probably owing (as I now know) to a lower ash content than what's in the supermarket food. However, its high corn content caused diabetes. Diabetes, as it turns out, is not a naturally occurring disease in cats or dogs. Rates of pet diabetes are skyrocketing in this country because we are stuffing corn down the mouths of carnivores. My male cat went from 17 pounds to 20, then dropped to 11.6 and has been peeing rivers. I now have to give him insulin injections twice a day. It's been fun researching where I can go in Worcester to drop off a box of sharps and how to give injections. No, really. I trusted Abbott to take care of my pets, and they didn't. The only good news here is that my new vet clearly knows more than Abbott's, and often, switching to healthy, species-appropriate food can cure a cat to where they don't need the insulin anymore. Which would be good, because that's going to be about $200-$300 a year. Ironically, the non-prescription, biologically-appropriate food made by a small family company is $3.60 a pound and the mass-produced, much-hyped Hill's is $3.75 a pound, but that's mostly 'cause vets get a huge kickback for every bag they sell. I haven't called Abbott yet to tell them why I won't be back. Between work, the new vet appointment yesterday and running around today trying to get all this stuff, they haven't been open when I've had a free moment. I can't imagine they'd admit to knowing that their recommended food isn't healthy, though. Who would? read more

I had to take my 5 year old guinea pig in for a check up because I was concerned about some changes in his behavior and appetite, and ended up calling here after several other places didn't have an exotic vet on staff this weekend, including his primary vet. We saw Dr. Ciminello and she was so kind and amazing! I was stressed and concerned and she was so good at explaining everything and keeping my little guy quiet and calm the whole time. Vets aren't usually fun experiences for pet or owner, but I was so pleased with our visit here and will happily be switching here for future check ups, etc. Sonja who checked me in was so nice, as well as the woman I checked out with, but I can't recall her name at the moment. Wow. I am shocked about the other reviews here. I did not like one particular doctor and refused to have see my dog but she has not been there in over a year. The only reason I did not like her was because she insisted I was doing wrong by feeding my pet human food. I was feeding him chicken and rice when she was sick. Every vet has encouraged this (and baby food). Since I made the switch the primary doctors has been dr. Pelligrini. Wonderful bedside manner and very knowable. Always pleasant, polite and answers all questions. The staff has always been pleasant. They are always slow on check out, but that could be because the dogs want out now. I had dr. Wang today. First time with her. Very polite and knowable. Answered all my questions. I have always used a VCA location so I have comment on the pricing. I do love to use the care credit card. No interest financing for set months based on the amount owed. VCA Shrewsbury (no longer in existence) told me about it. Allows me to pay there bill in 3-5 months with no interest. Yup, it's expensive like they say. Unfortunately, that wasn't the problem, cause our old vet in RI was similarly priced. Our first visit was "free", but they made up for it by giving our dog a shot that he just got five months ago and didn't need. Luckily, when we reviewed the papers and brought it to their attention, they said he'd be OK. A refund on the unnecessary duplicate shot would have been a better response. The vet also cringed and tried to get out of squeezing his overactive anal glands by suggesting a groomer do it. Our dog is also usually pretty chill at the vet, he likes going cause he likes to see all the other dogs. When he needs shots, they usually just distract him, give him a treat and give the shots. This time, they needed a few people to hold him. Not sure what the energy difference is between our old vet and this new one, but he wasn't a fan. Somebody should have taught them the treat distraction trick. Overall, I'm glad we're moving back to RI in a few months and can resume a vet he likes. read more

I have had some bad veterinary experiences over the years, and because of that, I know a good hospital when I find one. VCA Abbott Animal Hospital has been nothing but amazing to my pets and I. The staff is very knowledgeable and caring and I put my complete trust in them to do what's best for my furry family members. A few months ago, I had to euthanize my very sick and elderly foster dog named Buddha. Dr. Pellegrini was his vet and she was absolutely wonderful. She was very compassionate and you can tell that she genuinely cares for the well being of your pet. I have seen all of the vets there at least once and they are all fabulous. Also, these reviews that say Abbott is overpriced and "all about money" is untrue. The cost of veterinary care in general is very expensive and has risen greatly over the past 20 years. If you think it's too much to pay for your pets, then you should consider pet health insurance or maybe not have any animals at all. Caring for a pet is costly, it's just the reality of it. I definitely recommend VCA Abbott to anyone that is looking to finally find "the hospital". read more

Good care, courteous and friendly staff with good doc's but painfully SLOW. Always waiting at least 20 minutes in lobby, and then 20-30min in the examination room. It's difficult for my well-behaved dog to just sit there for so long, and honestly I have better things to do as well. Regardless of an appointment the place moves like molasses. read more

Unfortunately I had to have our cat euthanized this week. It was about 6pm Monday when we realized our cat was in serious trouble, and most vets were closed. Through google we found that this place was open until 8 that day, so in we went. I got checked in immediately and they put me in a little room (standard procedure with cats). I ended up seeing Dr. Geshwiler, who confirmed that Kitty didnt have long to live. We discussed euthanasia and she was very helpful to me in making the tough decision to put my Kitty down. She was very reassuring and non judgmental. I opted not to be there for the actual procedure but I'm sure they treated my Kitty with compassion until the very end. I came in a week later to pick up Kitty's cremated remains and that went smoothly too. The cremation bit is a nice service and worth the extra expenditure in my opinion. read more

I had a very good experience here last night. When I got home from work, my kitty had a swollen, goopey eye. I moved to Worcester from the Berkshires about 2 years ago and hadn't brought him anywhere here yet. This place is the closest vet to my home so I called. They said I could bring him right down and they will fit him in between appointments. I had to wait a while (over an hour), but I was expecting that because while this was not an "emergency", it was last second. We saw Dr. Annie Wang and she was wonderful. She checked for any abrasions, and he didn't have any, so we are treating him for conjunctivitis. I've only done 2 doses of the ointment and it already looks a little better. I was so grateful that they were able to get him in right away. I knew he wasn't in any real pain or anything, he was acting normally. But you never want to see something like that on your pet so I was immediately worried. I don't feel that they over-charged me either. Usual/customary cost. I am glad that I now have a vet solidified in case I need any other services. The only doctor I met was Dr. Wang but I thought she was really great with my lil baby so I'll be requesting her for all his appointments. The women that came in to get his vitals were so good with him too and they were cheerful and very nice. Overall I definitely had a 5 star experience. read more

Abbott has been my vet/kennel for my dog for about 5 years now. I love the people here. The front desk people are always happy, friendly and very helpful. The docs have always been sweet to my doggie and every time he is kenneled there he gets to stay in the front office as the pet of the day (if he's been a good boy)! The two things that stood out to me was: 1) when Ozzie needed a kennel cough before being boarded, he was throwing a fit because it's a spray that goes up his nose and he didn't want anything to do with that. So instead of tying him down and traumatizing the poor thing, they opted to give him the shot instead. They normally don't like to give the shot as the spray is easier to give. And 2) another time I needed to board him, I was waiting with him out in the waiting area and one of the assistants came out and immediately said Ozzie! how are you boy? and one of the doctors came out of another room and called him by name as she walked by...I think that impressed me sooo much that I mentioned it to the receptionist how nice it is that they know their patients by name. The prices are slightly higher I think than most animal hospitals but I love that they are 2 blocks away and I love that they know my doggie that well. Kudos to Abbott!!! read more

Called for an appointment for my 15 year old. They'd had a cancellation and offered it. I accepted and brought her on over. Vet felt with her age, she could use something for arthritis and put her on gabapentin. Next day received call from vet suggesting to run additional test for infection. THREE weeks later I call to check test results and get a refill. Told she has to have a new patient visit. She's not a new patient because she was seen last month. That was only an urgent visit since it was same day. WTF!!!!! Wont give test results, refill medication, won't see her again without scheduling a new patient! BEWARE of the underhanded business processes! More about $ than caring for your fur baby. HUGE disappointment and waste of time time that she could have been on another Vets waitlist. Have to pay for their recent burst pipe and renovations! Oh, and simple standard things such as a nail trim is $7.50 HIGHER than other local vets and groomers. read more

She has always been gentle and kind and I have been impressed with her knowledge and care. She correctly diagnosed Gracie with a serious illness when she was 4 yrs. and she had to go to Tufts for further treatment and other than that incident, Dr.Pellegrinni has handled all of Gracie's issues.Likewise, Dr. Halpert also delivered excellent care when she saw Gracie on one visit. I find the techs and the office staff to be competent and very accommodating. I trust the staff at Abbott's to take good care of my animals. read more

I brought my new Maltese puppy to VCA for the first time. It was an emergency He had hypoglycemia, so they had to keep him at the VCA for observation. The veternarian kept me up to date on his status, but after a few hours stated he probably would need to go to Tufts for more testing. After calling my breeder, she said to get my puppy back home and administer some corn syrup and sure enough he was back on track. The office followed procedure, but they never followed up with me to see how my puppy was doing. To me, they just checked the boxes and didn't care about my dog. My breeder recommended Marlboro Animal Hospital and I went there the following week. They are exceptional! So, if you are looking for a good vet, I wouldn't go to VCA. The VCA is responsible for the death of my 5 year old cat. During a recent snowstorm her sick visit with our regular was unfortunately cancelled but the VCA had an available appointment and we were desperate. The vet diagnosed her with a kidney infection caused by chronic kidney disease and refused to give us any sort of prognosis or outlook until after we finished treatment. Did a urinalysis and bloodwork but neglected to test for any causing bacteria, told us that to retest the sample they already had we would have to repay the whole amount for the test again. The vet still gave her Subq fluids and injected antibiotics. She got the fluids twice, both times they were the same amount but they cost different amounts, and both times these were grossly different than the projected cost. The vet attending didn't document her food allergies, she went as far as to recommend food the cat was allergic to. She didn't listen to our complaints or care about our cat at all, she saw our little family as a paycheck. The antibiotics administered to my cat caused her server neurological side effects that were not adequately explained to us before hand. We rushed her to Tufts Animal hospital, the vet there said based off her previous bloodwork she would have had a 75-100% chance of full recovery. However due to the delay and side effected caused by the VCA she no longer had any chance of recovery. My cat died confused, scared and sick in my arms waiting to be euthanized by the vet in the ER. read more

Took my cat in today for her first visit after not feeling well. The vet was very attentive and gentle and the tech was so sweet. They made some suggestions and started with the lesser course of treatment. This is a relief as some vets will push unnecessary services or products. She had an exam, 2 cans of food and 2 weeks supply of probiotics along with some shaving and my total was less than $100. I was shocked at how affordable it was. Overall satisfied. read more

I would not recommend going to this place, they are only in it for the money and not for the pets well being! They will tell you they can see your pet have you sit in an exam room for over 45 minutes and then come back to tell you that your pet can not be seen for some unbelievable reason! In the mean time, my poor dog was not only suffering from a sprained paw, but now emotionally stressed out from waiting in an exam room that was freezing and small! They didn't even have the common curtosy to come in talk to me or apologize for the inconvenience they had their uneducated vet techs do their dirty work!
