We had an episode with our German Shepherd, JJ and brought him here. He's not even my dog but he's spent quite a bit of time with me, and so his recovery was imperative. I brought him here after taking him to his vets office the previous day. I was given outpatient treatment and diet but after taking him home from vet I woke up to him still being lethargic and nauseous. Those symptoms were the original catalyst that brought me to his vet. The benefit of ASEC was not only, that he had been a patient here in the past but that is was closer to me. On the morning that I woke up to him laying beside a pool of his vomit I took him back to his vet's office in Studio City, only to find out that his emergency treatment would be here. Because he's not my actual dog, and it was so early, I didn't know that I would be bringing him here. Long story short I drove back from the valley only to find out that this place was much closer to me e.g., 6 minutes or so. These people are miracle workers and Do more than Dr. Dolitttle. From Travis being a calming voice and my initial contact, to Dr. Regalado, Christina from Oncology, and Dr. Tovar along with countless others they were able to get JJ back to his bark. I brought him in on Friday morning and by the time we visited him on that same evening we could already tell that he was improving. He was discharged by Saturday afternoon and they performed magic. The staff was pleasant and displayed excellent petside manner (I may have to coin that) to him. Although he smelled like a dog that had been laying in a pool of vomit, all the staff that we encountered stated that he was their favorite and that he was well-behaved. If you're reading this as a pet owner, get your dog some training so he/she is a good patient to those that exude patience to your pets. We just want to thank everyone for the work that they do and appreciate the efforts that were made to heal JJ and all the other pets in there. He told me that he wanted to deliver some donuts to the office and I told him that's not helping anyone's new year resolutions but he said you all deserve a treat even though he's currently on a bland diet. read more

Finding out that your best friend has a terminal heart condition is never easy news to take. The cardiology team at ASEC treated me and my dog with patience, compassion, and kindness for years, but when we experienced his first episode of heart failure, they became superheroes. My dog had been coming in for checkups over the years, and the staff seemed to love him. Seeing their genuine affection for him filled my heart, knowing that these people truly cared for him. It's not the doctor's fault that medical care is so ridiculously expensive, but they worked overtime and out of the office to help me monitor and prolong my dog's quality of life. They understood my financial situation and did everything in their power to help me care for my pup within my means. They were honest but gentle every step of our journey. When that unfathomable day came and I was spiraling into panic, they comforted me (as impossible and futile as it was). Losing a beloved pet is one of the most difficult experiences, and often all that anger and grief gets the best of you and you need to blame someone. I feel like a lot of that anger shows up in reviews. I cannot be clear enough when I say that the people at ASEC go above and beyond to do everything they can for the animals that come to them. And they are damn good at their jobs. Their staff cares deeply, and shares in your grief sincerely. On one of the saddest days of my life, I am grateful I was surrounded by them and am forever thankful for the borrowed time their care and expertise brought me and my dog over the years. My poor Oliver got in a ruff when the neighbors dog came into/into our property. Oliver's Nose was injured and his nose began to bleed. The veterinarian surgeon made it stop bleeding!!! Our elderly dog needed emergency surgery Saturday. The whole VCA team was exceptionally helpful, compassionate, and communicative. He came through great and I can't thank VCA enough. Yes, I'm sure it's expensive. We are blessed to be able to afford insurance, and I don't know how they compare price-wise to other vets. (They had the only cardiac specialist available the day we needed one, so we didn't look elsewhere.) That said, they were upfront about the cost and their estimate was spot on, so to speak. Regarding communication... A tech called us at 9pm Saturday to tell us the surgery went well, and the doc called a couple hours later with full details. Then their doc called the next day with an update. They then provided an extrordinarily complete written description of what they did to our dog, and what the aftercare needs to be, and all the drugs involved, etc. read more

My vet referred my cat, Olive, to VCA ASEC for an abdominal ultrasound. The first available appointment was a month out, so I took it. Vet appointments are hard to get in this pandemic. The long-awaited appointment was 9:30 a.m. today. Yesterday I expected VCA to call to confirm, but no call. I called them shortly after 6 p.m., but the person who answered said radiology was already closed for the day and she couldn't confirm my appointment. Olive is always psycho at the vet, so this morning I woke up at 6:30 to give her gabapentin (mixed up with wet cat food) so she would be calm for her ultrasound. At 7:45 a.m. I received a text from VCA confirming my 9:30 appointment and informing me, FOR THE FIRST TIME, that the cat should not eat for 12 hours prior to her ultrasound. Aaggggh! I immediately called radiology to say WFT with this less-than-2-hour-notice about 12 hours of fasting? The person in radiology said they left me a voice message yesterday with the fasting details. My phone shows no record of that call or message. I find it highly suspicious that they didn't send a text YESTERDAY, when I could have actually used it, but they managed to send one this morning. So guess what? I had to reschedule Olive's appointment for next available, which is five weeks from today. read more

On 11/5/2021 our 10 year old German Shepherd collapsed on her evening walk. It was after 6 and every vet we called said they were at full capacity and could not see us. Too many tears and a lot of frustration after making 14 vet calls all ending with a try someone else, an angel by the name of Kendi told us to come in immediately. She too said they were at capacity,however they could do an assessment to let us know if we truly had an emergency. I cannot tell you how helpless we felt until we spoke to Kendi. Although the assessment was the worst kind of news and our beloved Lix did not come home her last hours were treated with kindness love and respect. We received phenomenal care from the team at VCA. We have brought our pup here for cardiology (Dr Saelinger) in the past, and the whole team was amazing! Dr Saelinger is a GEM. Recently, we had an emergency with our guy, following some poor care from a local emergency vet, and the care we received at VCA was above and beyond. Dr Judge handled our admission. She was extremely concerned when we arrived, but she clearly and compassionately communicated the plan with us and made us feel like our guy was in the best hands. Her assistant was wonderful (Shenn was her name, I think) He stayed overnight. Dr Felix called first thing in the morning, giving a full update and plan for the day. She was very sweet and we could tell she cared for our buddy as much as we do. She then called to give us the good news that he could come home that night. She gave a thorough explanation of what happened, our follow up, and was patient with all of my questions. They are truly life savers! I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I struggle with this place...VCA saw something in his intensities, encouraged surgery, we agreed to do surgery, and they took out a giant furball. $7,000 later, we paid for a large furball. We as it necessary?? Probably not, but maybe. But of course they encouraged it. But that's not the worst part. Our cat came home COVERED in dried piss and shit. He was there for two nights. Did they not have litter boxes?! Did they just let him piss and shit all over himself?? We are SO upset at how dirty he is, and how horrible the conditions must have been. We had to bathe our CAT, when he got home. How dirty of a hospital are you that your patients come home covered in feces and piss?! read more

Here's the message I am unable to send to Dr Melman: "Could you please email a copy of my bill from my last visit? I dont believe I ever received one. Also, Snowball's urinalysis report you sent shows abnormal results for protein and occult blood, but no explanation or interpretation by a vet provided. Is this still a concern? A result of the URI? Did you indeed confirm it was a uri? Thx, Mark Legassie" UPDATE 9/7/21: I lowered rating from 5 to 3 stars because unlike promised, after 3 days I did not get a call or personal email with the results of the urinalysis. Instead, they just emailed me the urinalysis report with no interpretation or summary. There's abnormal values but I don't understand what they mean. Is my cat okay? What should I do about the abnormal results? What started as a very expensive but high-quality appointment has turned into a vet I can no longer recommend due to their lack of follow up. Seems like after they got paid they no longer were concerned over the health of my pet. ---------------- Very impressed with the quality of care and friendly service I received last night when my 14yo cat appeared to have a urinary blockage. I called the Emergency Dept and they told me to bring him in and they'll immediately check for blockage since it's an emergency situation. If no blockage they said I'll have to wait 1-2 hrs due to the current volume of emergencies. After there for only 10 minutes, Dr. Zeke Melman spoke with me. He was articulate, easy to understand, told me there wasn't blockage, and recommended only a urinalysis be done (since bloodwork 2 months ago was normal). No unneeded tests or procedures were ordered in an attempt to make more money. I felt they were honest in this regard. Since it wasn't an emergency, I left him there for 2 hrs and then picked him up along with antibiotics, pain meds, a urethral sphincter relaxer, and 2-page useful care instructions for home. The doctor suspects feline urinary tract disease and possibly a UTI. The instructions provided were thorough and even explained what each med did. It also provided follow up info including they'll contact me in 3 days with results of urinalysis. The whole thing costs $600, which is on the high side, but the service and care were so top-notch I didn't feel as bad about spending that much. Totally friendly staff. Highly recommend this place for emergency situations. It was worth the drive from Hollywood. read more

I had a wonderful experience at VCA ASEC. From the moment I called to set up an appointment the staff were extremely kind and accommodating. I set up an appt for the NEXT DAY and the dr was able to get my pup into surgery THAT SAME DAY without any wait time! Wow! If you are looking for a top notch surgeon, I would recommend Dr. Kelsey. She was so kind and did such an amazing job with my small senior Chihuahua that had a cancerous mass on her inner lip that needed to be removed. Not only did Dr. Kelsey remove the mass, she also did her best to keep the integrity of my pup's lip! Her lip post-surgery looks so great and my girl bounced back immediately after. Not only did I get post-op directions verbally from a vet tech day of pick up, but she also emailed and printed out post-op directions from Dr. Kelsey which is so helpful to have to reference to in case post-op doesn't go as planned once you get home. It was a wonderful experience all around. Don't be intimidated by this hospital being a VCA (I have had my share of negative experiences at other VCA hospitals so I was skeptical). Edited to respond to the vet responding to my review : If you were compassionate you would allow someone to leave the parking lot to get something to eat or use the bathroom. Additionally the compassion didn't come across in being cut off and having the receptionist say okay Byeeee and hang up while I was talking. My other vet allows you to leave the parking lot. This review is to serve to warn others that if they are uncomfortable with having to wait 3-4 hours then they should head elsewhere. Warning! They will not let you leave the parking lot once you drop your pet off. Waited in the parking lot for THREE hours. It's packed and they just put a sign out that they are only taking absolutely critical patients moving forward. The receptionist wouldn't even budge on it and said OKay BYEee in the middle of my sentence when I called to ask why you couldn't leave. I took my cat to the vet earlier during the pandemic to her usual vet and they allowed you to leave the parking lot while you waited. I have been patronized by a vet here before when they told me there was nothing wrong with my lethargic pet (turned out her food was making her sick- diagnosed by another vet). They also charged me 1200 dollars for a different cat for an overnight stay with fluids and antibiotics that got sick from being spayed at another vet. Outrageous prices $$ This time it was so last minute that I didn't even know where another vet was that could take my cat this week. 2 stars because the oncologist who treated my cat for stomach cancer was amazing a couple of years ago. read more

I have seen many of the specialists and emergency vets at ASEC, and every experience has been great. I always know my dogs are in great hands and are receiving incredible care when they are there. My older dog's cardiologist is Dr. Saelinger. She is extremely knowledgeable, kind and thorough. Dr. Somerville has operated on him 3 times (all unrelated), and I couldn't be more grateful for her. I know my dog is in great hands with her. Both of my dogs have also been to ASEC for their emergency services. All of the vets and supper staff we have encountered have been wonderful to us. I highly recommend ASEC. Having to take your dog to an emergency vet or to a specialist is always scary, but the ASEC staff not only give my dogs the best care, they put mg mind at ease. read more

Besides the total drama and panic she gets at vet appointments this could be dangerous. We talked for awhile and he examined her. I had a very disappointing experience at VCA ASEC.My cat has had recurring upper respiratory infections since October. My regular vet finally suggested I see Sean Yoshimoto, an Internist at ASEC. Finally got an appointment for last Friday and was excited to meet with him to discuss possible causes, tests, and treatment. Bottom line...his assistant took my cat's history then took my cat away to "take his vitals". A first, in my experience. The assistant returned with Dr. Yoshimoto, however would not return my cat to me until Yoshimoto spent all of 3 minutes, standing in the doorway spewing out the tests my cat should have. He then left, as I asked repeatedly for my cat to be returned. I was then given an estimate of between $6600.- 7900. for the tests. He never saw or examined my cat. I was quoted $292. for the consultation. They ultimately charged me $255...for nothing. Very upsetting experience. read more

I hope no one has to end up needing an animal hospital but if you do this is one great facility. 24 hours a day in operations, the staff are great, you get to stop by as often (within reason) to stop by and visit your pet. Of course prices are high but believe me I paid the same at other facilities but did not get nearly the service I got here. I was lost sing my beloved "Happy" and I wanted alone time with him often and that is what I got. They have oncology, cardiology and emergency surgery depts. The facility is Super clean the cages they put ur pet in once inside the emergency room were sparkling clean and I really appreciated that. They are located on Sepulveda Blvd., and they have their own private parking. Great great hospital! read more

This is a great hospital for animal emergencies and specialists. My elderly dog was treated by oncologist Dr. Sue Downing, and she and the rest of the staff were wonderful. They treated his cancer aggressively but never at the expense of his quality of life. When the chemo series didn't reduce the tumor, they were honest and made it clear there was nothing left to do to help him. They gave me meds to help keep him comfortable and told me I should euthanize him when his quality of life deteriorated. Sammy lived almost two months longer and actually improved quite a bit -- eating enthusiastically, wagging his tail, snuggling with me and walking around instead of sleeping constantly. What turned out to be his second-to-last day of life was one of his best in a long time. The next day, when he stopped eating and started drifting off, I knew it was time to give him the ultimate, and hardest, gift. I brought him to VCA ASEC that evening, where the vet repeatedly reassured me that I was doing the right thing and that it was definitely the right time. They didn't rush me, and when I was ready they painlessly put him down. I'm heartbroken by the loss of my beloved little guy, but I have no regrets or guilt about the way I tried to save him or doubts about whether I waited too long or did it too soon. He had the best care, and I got the best guidance, possible, and I will always be grateful for that. read more

My partner took my kitten this morning to VCA ASEC to do a CT scan/ultrasound referred by another vet in VCA Santa Monica. When they came back, I noticed that there are several wounds/ bruises on my kitten's chest. They must be so harsh when they tried to shave my kitten so that there are wounds in his chest. Why are you guys so rough on my kitten? My kitten was in pain and distress when he got home. Not to even mention they made a mess on his chest and back legs! This is just pure animal cruelty and disrespect to animals! I'm so disappointed and upset!!! read more

I brought my dog here to see a specialist and get X-rays for a limp and muscle wasting. The specialist Dr. Naiman sedated him and took x-rays. Results were inconclusive but he still in very blunt manner said we could amputate his leg. He referred me to an MRI place in Orange County who ended up canceling the appointment three times. Come to find out there is another VCA hospital not even a mile from the VCA where Dr. Naiman was who had an MRI machine. But by the time I found this out the wait for an appointment was 1-2 months. Why send us to Orange County when another VCA has the MRI? We found through the MRI that he has an inoperable nerve sheath tumor. All we can do is medicate and enjoy our time with our Buddy. We are out of state and I need to refill his medication. rather then go to the pharmacy in Californian I ordered the refill on Chewy. VCA rejected it but did not contact me. I called them to find out why they didn't approve it on Chewy when he had 3 refills. They stated Dr. Naiman no longer works for us so we are not renewing it. I asked why when it was already approved? Their reply Dr. Naiman doesn't work here anymore and we are not a general care Vetrinary so bring him to a general care vet. I advised them of his condition and putting him in the car driving him to a vet for a diagnosis that has already been made was not right. Putting him in a car with his weekend condition for no reason is foolish. The guy on the phone just got a snotty tone in his voice and said yeahhhhhh we don't do that. we don't call in refilllllssss. I am not a fan of VCA but his primary vet became VCA so I stayed with them but I do not recommend them. They are each individual, they do not share records. they will charge you for the same exam at each VCA you go to even if it was just the day prior. SAY NO TO VCA if you love your pets. read more

My cat had cancer, and I took him here for a few years. I worked primarily with Dr. Cohen, and he was always kind and helpful. Eventually the time came to put my cat down, and I brought him here for it. They were very understanding about it of course, and if I recall correctly even the doctor got a bit choked up. I'd have given a five-star review just for the care alone, but a week or so later I received a book in the mail with thoughtful notes from the doctor and other staff, plus small cards with my cat's paw print on it. I know it's a small gesture and they probably do it for many of their patients but still I was absolutely blown away by it. read more

Our special needs dog has been declining with a rheumatoid arthritis condition. My wife took him in and they basically said there is nothing they can do, despite providing various options and diagnoses at great cost for the last few years, which they now admit were wrong. We needed an anti-diarrheal drug and were unable to get ahold of them for days. When we finally did, they continued to do nothing. When our pharmacy called they finally stated, after 5 hard days for us, that Dr. Yoshimoto wouldn't prescribe an anti-diarrheal drug. WTF? You've prescribed all kinds of other harder drugs for the little guy, but you let him and us suffer over this. So now we get to go to another vet - after five days of being ignored or worse - to get some help for our suffering dog. Will never be back. read more

ONCOLOGY- We had some really bad experience with other vets so coming to VCA was a relief. Our PCV never bothered to assess our pet who we suspected had certain problems but they always said it was nothing serious and never bothered to run any exams. By the time symptoms progressed we had to take her to the ER (not here) the vet there was adamant about putting her down didn't even want to let us take her home. We finally found VCA and got referred to Dr. Sue Downing and her team in Oncology. That was the first time any Vet ever really took proper care of our Snow. She ran all the exams needed. She took the time to assess Snow at every visit and explain all treatment options as well as medication regimen to us. She was honest with the expectations of treatment and always informed us of the risks and benefits. The team was amazing from the vet techs, to Ms. Melissa to Dr Downing. They were available even when we weren't scheduled if Snow felt ill. Snows cancer was unable to be cured due to how advanced and aggressive it was but the team was able to give her a good quality of life with treatment so that we could have some more time with her and for that we will forever be grateful. I took my pet here for an ultrasound of the liver. I was there about five minutes before the appointment and was greeted by a friendly staff. I was roomed immediately, and Dr. Yoshimoto entered the room within another five minutes. The doctor did a great job of explaining the ultrasound and took my dog back with him. The ultrasound was done in about 40 minutes, and the doctor came out and explained his findings in common terms. We now have a plan of action. Overall, this was a great experience for a stressful situation with my pet. read more

They don't care about your fur baby. They only care what the expiration date is on your credit card. I like many of the other negative reviewers here have a long and very sad story. If you want details feel free to DM me. Bottom line, stay away from this place if you love your pet. These people are greedy corporate a$$@$@^3#@s!! They overcharge for their services, they have poorly trained staff that are incompetent, and bottom line they only have dollar signs in their eyeballs. If I could leave a negative review, I would... DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE. They tried to charge me $12,000 for an unnecessary sergery on my 7 week old kitten! They wanted to chop off his weenie, and it turns out it was just blocked under the skin. They are only concerned about money and nothing else. read more

VCA ASEC was a godsend recently when my dog ingested a foreign substance and was extremely ill. I had initially taken him to VCA urgent care in Marina del Rey which ended up being a waste of time and money (to no fault of theirs) only because I ultimately still had to bring him to ASEC. My initial assumption was that there would be a huge wait time here, which wasn't true. Once there we were seen promptly. The staff was incredibly empathetic and efficient. I cannot speak to their pricing model, but I would highly encourage everyone who is able to get pet insurance. Having Trupanion + the care of the veterinarians here made the whole scenario substantially less of a nightmare than it could have been otherwise. DO NOT take ANY of your pets to Animal Specialty & Emergency Center (ASEC) under ANY condition. Just a couple of blocks down the street (across the street from Public Storage) there is a VCA West Los Angeles (opened 24 hrs-after hours of course for emergency's only) for urgent care with friendly, knowledgeable and professional staff, with prompt Customer Service with attention and love for your pet. We went next door to VCA where a vet examined and diagnosed our dog in our presence, and proceeded to treat him without putting her under - at a much lower cost and greater safety and care for my dog. My dog had an emergency as you can see in the photo that was taken while in ASEC parking lot. Since my dog was bleeding on the side of her face and the blood was dripping all over the place - It was pouring rain and freezing cold not to mention my birthday as well. I pulled my car up to the front entrance - hoping that one of the more than 10 or so staff members would get up and help assist me with my dog. Instead they all looked at one another and made me stand outside in the rain for several minutes. The uncaring, incompetent staff members figured out which waiting room I could bring my dog in until the vet on duty could speak to me about what was occurring and what my options were. Eventually after several CUSTOMERS not STAFF MEMBERS but customers helped me out 30 mins had passed before one of there highly unprofessional staff members, told me they wouldn't offer there services because I supposedly disrespected the staff because I was emotional and upset for having to wait in the rain and then after waiting in one of there rooms for nearly 30 mins. The employee told me to just go across the street to the other VCA Vet. THANK GOD I DID!!! I will be following my entire ordeal in a detailed review shortly (on this site and several others). How dare they treat a customer the way they treated me but more importantly how dare they do this to my doggie. Unacceptable. GRADE RATING: F STAR RATING: 0 out of 5 RECOMMEND: No ATTENTION: ALL ANIMAL LOVERS & PET OWNERS....Please, Please, Please don't take any of your pet(s) here under any condition - my suggestion would be to take your pet(s) down the street to VCA West Los Angeles for any non-emergency/urgent care.
