We have been going to this office for quite some time. We started going to it back when it was Elgin Vet Hospital, them Elgin Small Animal Hospital, and continue to go to this day. We LOVE LOVE LOVE Elgin Family Pet center just as much as we loved Elgin Vet Hospital. We have seen many Doctors come and go and always have had top notch care. We have seen Dr. Thevis, Dr. Sirmons, and most recently Dr. Branndon. All are very sweet, caring, knowledgeable, and have never tried to push anything on us. Have the prices gone up over the years? Yes, but what has not gone up? Most recently we had our senior dog hurt his back and have to stay at the hospital for several day. When we got the bill it was very reasonable for a hospital stay. The staff is amazing and always has been! We love Veronica, Sarah, Mallory, Fran, and Jenette. They always are happy to see us walk in the door and my dogs love getting love from all of them. read more

They worked with me every minute of the way and found an affordable place for me to have surgery. They went way beyond what they needed to and were patient with my emotions when afraid of losing my dog. I went in for my free first pet appointment, I was thankful at first because being very low on finances trying to escape a domestic violence marriage i had some concerns about some symptoms one of my dogs had. The lady who brought me to the exam room looked at her coworkers as she led me back and made faces at them that were directed at me essentially making fun of me for some reason. I read the tech a list of concerns I had about my dog, she left the exam room and when she returned she tried to sell me a shot for my dog that was $90 before my dog was even examined by the vet. it was for him licking his feet which he was doing more than regular. I declined and wanted to wait for the vet to examine him first. The vet seemed in a hurry but was very nice . She said she didn't see any issues with his feet and I could use otc Benadryl to see if it helped. I ended up having to get rabies vaccination by law and some other meds. After arriving home I realized they charged me almost $100 for the vet visit which was suppose to be free. So i called and requested a refund which I am still waiting for, it has been 2 days and going to call again today. This was a terrible experience, I felt like I was at a car lot and all they cared about was upselling me treatments whether my dogs needed them or not. They called me to schedule my free appointment then they charged me, I know they did this on purpose to see if I would just let it go. I left there almost in tears from the way I was treated and did not understand why I was treated that way. I am going back to Copeland vet clinic where the prices are very good as well as they seem to actually care. It is just farther away so I was trying this clinic which is closer to me. This place first concern is money as you can see by the attempt to sell me a shot before the vet even saw my dog and then when the vet did do the exam stated nothing was wrong with the licking or paws so I would have gotten a $90 shot for nothing. read more

We recently chose to change our small animal (dog, cat) veterinarian after being with the Elgin Vet for more than 15 years. We currently have SEVEN dogs and subsequently spend quite a bit of money at the vet. The Elgin vet's prices have always been slightly higher than average, but we got better service and accepted the higher cost. However as of late, costs have increased even more (especially for meds) and service has gone down. Our Beagle was prescribed a pill for his chronic bronchitis. Shortly afterward, he developed severe hepatitis and almost died. Diagnosis at a specialist and subsequent treatment cost us over $3,000. Our vet didn't bother to tell us that the two ingredients in the cough pill could all cause liver damage. Another one of our dogs is a GSD on Novox/Carprofen/Rimadyl every day for arthritis. Elgin vet makes it difficult to get his prescription filled. They don't like filling out paper prescriptions and understandably prefer everyone buy meds through them. The trouble is that they charge $1.60 per pill, but I can get the EXACT same pill from an online pharmacy for $0.45. The most recent prescription was for Novox (one of the generics). I ordered 'Carprofen' (another generic and a little cheaper) from AlliVet. Unfortunately, AlliVet lost the prescription I mailed them. So I asked AlliVet to call my vet and get verbal authorization. Elgin vet refused to verbally authorize the order because "Novox and Carprofen are not the same thing". I had a meltdown on the phone with them. Three days later we were getting a tour of our new vet's office and facilities. The new vet had already requested a transfer of records. Elgin vet didn't even call us to ask what was going on. read more

I used to like these folks but making a long story short, the young woman vet has NO idea what the hell she is doing. One of my dogs misdiagnosed, given new meds, had heart failure and died. My cat with diabetes mistreated, insisted on pulling his teeth, and he died. My other dog, had "extensive testing" "poo analyzed" BUT still was misdiagnosed and had kidney failure and died. If I could put no stars, I would! I am trying to get a stray cat who gave birth at my workplace, a new home. She is remarkably sweet, it looks like someone (on FB) found her in December 2023, gave her to a friend, and she somehow ended up homeless again. The bottom line, I have an adopter lined up who wanted to see if she was FIV+ or FIV-. She contacted VCA Elgin this afternoon, and after four tries and numerous phone loops, she talked to someone there who said to bring her in and they could do the test. Well...easier said than done! I brought her in, the receptionist was like "we can't work on an animal that hasn't been seen here before"...duh, what about the first time you see an animal, it's never been seen before. Y'all are vets and vet techs, so handling a new animal shouldn't be the issue. After all, the cat was just chilling in the cat carrier, calm as could be. I'd already stopped in there once to see if she was chipped last week and they didn't have a problem with her. Next they tell me, because of the liability, she must have an appointment with the vet ($90) and a rabies shot ($55), again the liability issue. Looking at the cat you could definitely see she wasn't rabid and she would be getting all her vaccinations when she is spayed in a couple of weeks. In addition, they are charging $120! for the FIV test!!!!!! I checked with Save an Angel $5 vet or tech visit, $15 for rabies, $20 for the FIV test. Information like this makes me sick to my stomach. With the economy as bad as it is right now, people are having a hard time holding onto their animals. Greedy bastards like VCA are making it even harder on people to keep their pets. VCA should be ashamed of themselves. Bastrop County, and Elgin, weren't always like this. With the influx of new people, corporations are taking over small businesses and sticking it to the customers. Shame, Shame, Shame on you VCA. I am so glad that I've moved all my animals to a vet clinic in Brenham, it might be a bit of a drive but the prices are fair and the people you deal with are reasonable and not some receptionist spouting corporate gibberish. Liability...that cracks me up, again, these are vets and vet techs, I think they know how to handle themselves around cats and dogs. My wife and I were very anxious about transferring vet clinics when we moved to Elgin, as I used to work in vet med and that can sometimes make it difficult to trust veterinary staff (and can sometimes make me a bit neurotic and irritating as a customer). I have three dogs, one of which is 16 years old and extremely needy, so the care plan has really been a life saver financially. The front desk staff is great, and I'm in there often enough that they recognize me and my dogs. I've never before had dogs that hated going to the vet, but unfortunately all three of my current pups heartily dislike going (not VCA's fault- the chihuahuas are jerks and my lab is an anxious mess in any new situation). The staff at VCA Elgin has been extremely understanding and caring, even though I'm positive that my dogs do not make their jobs any easier (sorry!). Dr Abbott in particular has been fantastic- she remembers my dogs and is very willing to work with my wife and I to ensure my dogs are getting the best level of care. Finally, the price is extremely reasonable. Anyone on these reviews that is complaining about the price is quite frankly out of touch with the cost of veterinary care. I have found the pricing to be more than fair- even with my two dogs that are not part of the care club. Recently my lab mix spent all weekend at the emergency vet due to a severe allergic reaction that led to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The experience at the emergency vet was awful, but once VCA Elgin opened up again on Monday I was so happy to be able to get an appointment right away so that they could run a full blood panel and formulate a plan. I feel completely confident in the care Brodie received at Elgin family pet center, which was a welcome relief after an extremely stressful and emotional weekend. Thank you VCA Elgin! I have been a client of theirs for 6 years. You would think that some type of relationship would have developed which would include being there during the most difficult time in ones life, the ending of your dogs life. They said they would come to my house to help lay my dog to peace weeks before the day we decided it was necessary. but the day I called they made excuses. And when I gave them two different days and said my primary doctor didn't have to be the one to come out, I thought I was giving them a great deal of flexibility, but even with this, they acted as if my situation was not their problem and treated me like a number, no name, number. I can understand things come up, but I asked for the doctor to call me and instead she had one the front desk assistants call me and she left a message stating the doctor told her to call me to explain their policy. I was devastated, calling around, praying I could find someone who would be willing to do this. I found a vet who is my horse vet. My regular vet, who knows my dog has cancer and knows it's non treatable, and knows we made the decision to let her go in peace, not only wasn't there for me, but never called with condolences. This same vet knows that we just lost our other dog 7 months ago of cancer. Needless to say, I won't be using their services anymore. read more

Let me start by saying that I live about an hour away in Austin, but I would drive to the moon if it meant that Dr. Streiff could treat my pup. :) My dog Ellie got a ear infection at the beginning of April. I took her to our normal vet that's super close to where we live in Austin, and that vet gave me some ear drops and kinda shrugged it off like it was no big deal. But within a couple weeks, the infection seemed to be getting worse. I took her back twice a month from April to July, with very little progress being made. I even tried other vets in that time period to see if someone else could make some progress but it just wasn't getting any better. My puppy even started to lose some of her hearing over that time, and I could tell that she just wasn't acting like herself. I was getting increasingly frustrated and I just wanted my sweet, playful pup back. So I decided to try yet another place: the VCA Elgin Family Pet Center. I was able to get into see Dr. Streiff pretty quickly, and she was just so wonderful! She listened to me rant about everything that Ellie had been through, and after doing a quick exam she found the issue pretty easily. She gave Ellie a thorough ear cleaning, administered some heavy-duty ear drops, and sent us home with some medication as well. I felt that she spent extra time with us to make sure that we got the best care! Her and some of the other staff even stayed well past closing time to make sure that Ellie and I had everything that we needed! The BEST PART: the very next morning Ellie was back to being a playful puppy, with no hearing issues and the infection had cleared drastically overnight! I spent so much time and money taking Ellie to other vets that couldn't solve the problem over a 4 month period. Dr. Streiff solved it in one afternoon. It's been a few months now, and Ellie's ear is 100% better all thanks to Dr. Streiff and the amazing staff at VCA! read more

This month I entered the Elgin Family Pet Center with my 19 year old cat that had an extremely hard night. My cat was very sick and in my opinion I thought the situation was dire. I approached the counter and the attendant was nice. I told her what was going on and she immediately had a sad look on her face. The attendant told me the doctor was busy and about to eat lunch. I explain the situation was bad so she went to the back office to speak with the vet. When she returned she stated, ,"the Dr is busy and has a surgery soon, then she was going to eat lunch" The attendant did say I could wait until 3pm ( 4 hours away). I was shocked because the lobby was EMPTY. I could see the sympathy in the eyes of the attendant and the Dr's decision was out of her hands. I took my cat the Bastrop Veterinary and they immediately saw my cat due to her emergency situation. My cat was dead within the hour. The people at Bastrop Vet. have earned my buisness. I have been taking all of my animals (8 animals) to Elgin Vet/ Elgin Family Pet Center since 1993. An unknown amount of money has exchanged hands. I only wanted to help my cat. The Dr at Elgin Family Pet Center has lost the reasons why people decided to study veterinary medicine. I am disappointed in her service and lack of dedication to the people and animals of this community. I no-longer will recommend this facility ........ read more

My sweet dog was previously seen by VCA Elgin Family Pet Center. So when my other pup was injured, I knew he'd be in good hands. They were able to exam my sweet pup on short notice. He is extremely protective over me and made it very clear as the staff stepped into the exam room with us. He is 70 pounds and can be intimidating. They were able to gain his trust in order to avoid sedating him for the exam. They are super patient and caring. There is a vet clinic literally a mile away from our home, but will continue to make the drive to this place. Two out of my five dogs are now patients there. Will transfer the other three soon. The other vets Ive seen there were ok. They have always been outrageously expensive though. But this vet, Strieff needs counseling. There is something seriously wrong with her and her "bedside manner" is all about her and not about the patient. I can not say enough good things about this place! We brought our dog in and warned them that he has behavioral issues. They weren't worried about it at all and handled him very well while being concerned about his health and safety. They were quick with his shots, blood work and nail trim as to not stress him out. And when they were done he was actually wagging his tail and taking treats from Hannah, the vet tech. They also did not try to over sell us on things Primo didn't need. Dr Streiff took care of my new rescue as a new appointment. As a first time dog owner I had a lot of questions from diet, behavior, crate-training, exercise, dogwalking, housetraining. Although I have read three books on dog training, she gave me the most helpful answers and really took the time to give me tips that I needed! Once upon a time there was a great Veterinary Hospital in Elgin that cared about your pets. Then in 2007 it was split in to two places, the bovine/equestrian division and the family pet center which built a brand new building. Last year the pet center was bought out by two of the doctors and it has been on a downhill slide since. It has become a money making machine for the physicians and animals are no longer a priority, money is. They did help my cat, but the cost of it was outrageous and never once did anyone talk to me about what it would all cost. I would like to think there were things that could have been postponed for a later time, but I was never offered that decision. When I complained and asked to speak to the doctor, I was told he was doing paperwork and would get to me when he could. It seems he needed to make sure all of the billing was done so he could collect every penny, which was much more important than an upset patient in the waiting room. I waited for 15 mins for that to happen. He of course then tried to turn it around so it was all my fault. I sent an email detailing my dissatisfaction and received no response. 12 years I have been taking all of my animals here. I hope the Manor Veterinary Hospital treats me better since that is where my furbabies will be taken to from now on. read more

I started bringing my dogs to the Elgin Vet Hospital when we moved to Manor. I found their prices a little high, but the staff was really nice so I kept going anyway. We're not the kind of people who go to the vet often. We have 2 horses, 3 dogs, and a stray cat we take care of. Generally, they're all in good health and our vet needs are rare. When I went to take the cat and dogs in for general vaccinations I found out the vet had changed names. I figured, why not - that's where I've been taking the dogs. So I went. I won't be going back. They're not terrible, but I 100% agree with the comment that they're just out to make money. Being there with my animals felt almost like being at a car garage being priced out for everything they can possibly do. I want to give my pets great lives, but when it comes down to it they're my pets. I'm not going to do elective surgeries on them. They don't have health insurance. Another note - they had "lost" the paperwork on my dogs from their previous visits. They had no records of when their last vaccinations were. I had also given about 20 pages of vet records to them when we got our most recent adopted dog. Gone. Where? I'm not sure. They said they're trying to go paper "lite." You might think take you for all you're worth? - hey, that's just every vet. I don't believe that though. I know I talked to Bastrop vet when I thought my horse had ulcers. I asked about some different medicine options for him and their costs. They leveled with me and told me that if I couldn't afford the expensive meds like ulcer guard to go with 10 tums/day. Guess what? It worked...and for a lot less money. Result = I trust them. Ultimately, I just don't trust Elgin Family Pet Center. If I don't trust them, then I'm never going to be able to know when what they're telling me is serious or not really. I've decided to move my business over to Bastrop Vet. It's where I take the horses so all pets will be in the same place. read more

I have been a client here for 6 years, and I am fed up! Oh, where to begin. I've had a cat that I've taken here since I started going to this clinic, and for his yearly visits I didn't really notice a decline in the quality of service. However, I adopted a dog in January and it's been nothing but constant frustration with this place. It really feels like they are just out to get your money and don't care about you or your pets. First of all, it's the waits. I've had to wait over 30 minutes to drop off my dog for boarding because I had to talk with the vet tech about her heartworms. The conversation was less than 5 minutes. Every time we have a drop off or appointment there are very long wait times, not only in the waiting room but in the exam room as well. Often the staff say they will be with you momentarily but it's 5 - 10 minutes. Mornings are better - don't even try in the afternoons. Then there's the cost. My dog's estimated treatment for heartworms was $800 LESS that the ACTUAL cost for her treatment. That's a lot of money to consider when you're choosing a place for treatment. I might have driver her farther to another more affordable office. I was given a "sample" pack of medication that was 4 pills for $60. It's not really a sample if you have to pay. When I called to refill the medication they said they were out but that I could get an OTC medication at the pharmacy for less than $10 that would work just fine! Why not give me that choice in the first place? I've boarded my dog several times and each time she seems fine but each time I pick her up her bed smells like urine, which makes me thing she doesn't get out enough. The final straw was on Labor Day weekend. I called to reserve an appointment from Friday - Monday. The person on the phone neglected to mention that they would be CLOSED on Monday so I had to pay for an extra day of boarding. I understand if your business is closed on a holiday, but she should have said something when I made the booking so I could make other arrangements. The receptionist said the there was an email and a reminder on their facebook page - but why would I refer to those things when I had an actual employee on the phone? I feel like a responsible business would have taken off the charge for the extra day, not lost a client over one day of boarding. I've had enough. read more

I am not from Elgin or Manor, so my review is going to be a little different: I found two stray dogs while working out in Elgin and thought maybe the local vet would be familiar with who they are. I learned very quickly Bastrop county isn't Travis county, and "pets" are seen very differently. The vet told me there was a lot of dog dumping and these two probably fell into that. Since one of the dogs appeared in severe pain, she walked me through the best options to take and recommendations on steps I could take for general health. In the end, it was my own peace of mind that made me add on all the work, but the staff was friendly and eager to help. The helped me witha couple samples of some items and the bill came out much less expensive than it would in the city. As I said, I am not familiar with how they were run in the past, but was gracious for the time and care they seemed to put into these two strays off the street. read more

First, Ive used Elgin Vets for over 20 yrs. with mostly positive things to say. I've seen owners, and buildings change ,but this latest Group is a "Profit First" oriented business. They will call, EMail , and send you Junk Mail to get your Attentions. If you have to decline unneccasary/expensive procedures... But here's the real Horror Story. I had brought my 15 yr old dog to them after he had an especially bad night. In all honesty I knew they would probably put him to sleep due to his age and health problems .This is what I didn't expect...After the Vet examined him, She informed me that my dog had no feeling from the neck down and it was best to Euthanize. (They want full payment before euthanisization).She prepared the shot ,and the moment the needle stuck into his foot, he let loose a long blood curdling scream. (I nearly fainted).I guess he wasn't really numb from the neck down?They started pushing expensive Cremation, Foot impression etc. almost immediately. When I explained that we were taking him home to bury, they tried to hustle us out a side door. read more

I had to take my dog Loretta in for a fairly serious knee surgery and I could not be happier with the treatment she received. The staff treated her incredibly well, and handled me and my anxiety around the surgery as though Loretta was their main priority. I am so very pleased with the outcome and would definitely recommend dr. Sermons to anyone in need of a similar procedure. I also do not think that it is coincidence that I brought Loretta in with a purple bandana and she left with a purple wrap on her leg. This vet is only in it for the money. We have been taking our animals to Elgin Family Pet Center since we moved to Elgin in 2007. At first, we were happy with them because the doctors seemed to care, but now all they care about is the money they can get out of us. In the past 2 years, the good doctors have left and we always get a new doctor whenever we take our pet. Yesterday, we took our dog to have surgery to remove a fatty lipoma, which cost almost $1,000.00. (Thank goodness for credit cards.) When we brought him home, we noticed that his bandage was slipping, so we took him back the next day. They charged us $38 just to replace the bandage. Really?! They charged us $38 to fix their mistake! After they remove our pup's stitches, we're finding another vet. read more

I just wanted to comment on how much I appreciate Dr. Brandons' services for my 2 babies, Ginger and Hemmingway, as they had really bad tummy troubles. Dr. Brandon was very kind and took her time and she wasn't pushy. My 2 fur babies loved her. She was also very gentle giving them their shots,,this is the first time that they didn't cry at any vet during their shots, ever!. Vanessa was also very kind to Ginger and Hemmingway, and very professional with helping me with my questions on their care and about grooming and boarding.
