Yes it is expensive to bring your pet here, but try going to the emergency room yourself without insurance. They have taken great care of my dog through 2 surgeries and a complication. The staff is very friendly, presents all options and pricing up front. My dog needed to have back to back surgeries and they worked with me to help keep the costs as low as possible. They really care about what's best for your pet not making the most money out of you. read more

I had to bring my dog, Ribby, here a couple years ago when she decided to eat a fish hook. We were camping near Estacada, had JUST set everything up, and I looked over to see my dog trying to vomit, with fishing line hanging out of her mouth. Apparently the last camper before us left a baited hook and my dog thought the whole thing looked pretty tasty. With it being a weekend, NW Vet Specialists was the closest place that was open. We drove over an hour to get there and then waited a while longer in the lobby. The wait wasn't too bad for an emergency clinic type situation. My dog wasn't dying or anything, in fact she was acting as if absolutely nothing was wrong. We were eventually seen by Dr Veatch. She was very nice and calmly laid out all the possible courses of action. An x-ray was taken which clearly showed the hook stuck in the back of Ribby's throat. Luckily they were able to sedate her and pull the hook out with some long hemostats. No surgery was needed. I waited for quite a while longer in the lobby while my dog recovered from the sedative. I think they might have been playing with her in the back, because when the tech brought her back out, she told me my dog was the best German Shepherd she had ever met. "So friendly!" Ribby was no worse for the wear, she came back out dancing around and yodeling, looking proud of herself. The cost was reasonable for emergency care complete with x-ray and sedation. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't over the top either. I really liked the staff and Dr Veatch and I'm really happy they were there when we needed them! read more

This review is for the Radiation Oncology team. Nobody WANTS to take their dog for cancer treatment but if you find yourself in a place where you have to, this is the best place to go. Dr. McDonald and her team are top notch. From the day we set the appointment for the consultation the team was by our side. They kept us up to date on when records were (or were not) sent over by the referring Drs., what to expect for each visit and offered their text line for any immediate questions. We were checked in on prior to our arrival, they confirmed our dogs instructions and made sure we knew how to get to the office and answered any questions we had. They were incredibly kind and compassionate when we checked our dog in and during his stay, Each day we were provided with an update and instructions for the next day. When our treatment was complete they welcomed us into the team area and provided a "graduation" party if you will. You can tell from day one they care about the humans as much as the animals. I am sad to report that a friend of mine has a dog going through something similar and isn't experiencing the same care from her clinic as we did with VCA. I know we all have to make the decision that is best for ourselves and our family and if you can make it to VCA I don't think you will be disappointed. This team went above and beyond anything I could have expected. From someone that works in human healthcare....We could only be as lucky if someone treated us as good as these wonderful humans treat the animals. read more

If there was an option for zero stars, I'd give that. We were referred here by a family vet, to the Ophthalmology department for an issue involving sudden blindness in our dog. We met with Dr. Rosalie Atkins who did her optical exam and confirmed that my dog's retinas were partially detached and went forward explaining the many possible causes and medications to treat what, and gave her suggested treatment plan to reattach with medication and full bloodwork panel. I took the medication, written prescriptions and treatment plan she wrote out, and went home to hunt down the RX's I needed to fill at our local pharmacies. Long story short, it took 4 days of me going around to 5 different pharmacies and calling the vets office repeatedly, trying to figure out why I was having such an issue finding some simple eye drops they prescribed. Reason being, Dr. Atkins made multiple misspelling errors on her prescriptions (mixing up medication names) causing pharmacists confusion which sent me everywhere and calling her office repeatedly, trying to figure out the corrections. AND she even forgot to give me the actual medication that would fix the retinal detachment until the day AFTER our appointment with her! You can imagine my frustration, so I filed a complaint with their administration office because of the attitude I repeatedly got from their tech team while trying to fix their mistakes (and the poor care given by the doctor). Apparently they didn't like hearing their negative feedback because when we went back a month later for a recheck on my dog's eyes, they handed me a letter refusing us future service, "because of my issues with miscommunication." I couldn't believe the audacity of this office. Yes, I called and contacted the district manager and he looked into the case but did nothing. Instead they gave me referrals to other specialty veterinary hospitals and sent me and my dog down the road. Save yourself and your pet a lot of heartache, money, and trouble by taking them somewhere else. Later we met others at our dog park that have also had horrible experiences at this VCA hospital, so it's definitely not just me. We're currently having a much better experience in Vancouver, WA with Columbia River Veterinary Specialists. Good luck. read more

My volunteer who does transport loves the doc we have worked with, and I love the service! My calls are answered, there are appointment reminder calls, and they called well in advance to double check on records to be well prepared. I would never recommend this place. They over charge & try to get you to agree to unnecessary procedures. I didn't approve of any treatment without first being consulted. When the vet was telling me my options she said they could give subcutaneous fluids. They wanted an additional $70 to do this so I said no. I didn't have the money. She then told me she started an IV line but never gave fluid & I had to pay for that. Why would you start a line if it wasn't ok'd & the fluid could have been given sub q? TO CHARGE FOR UNNECESSARY BS! These people take advantage of your situation. Disgusting. read more

Over the past eight years, we have had to take one of our dogs to NWVS on five separate occasions and I cannot recomend them highly enough. The staff are friendly, highly skilled and understand people who willingly take a beloved pet to see a specialist. Our dog had had two failed sugeries for Entropian (turned in eyelashes) by the age of four months. After the second surgery, thankfully, the vet she was under recommended Dr Schirlie at NWVS, an opthalmic specialist (a great vet), who was able to correct the problem; he also picked up that she had quite a serious heart condition during the pre-op consult - which the other vets had missed completely. Throughout our visits (pre-op, surgery, post op), all the staff inspired complete confidence and we never doubted that the end result would be successful, which it was. While the sugery was not cheap, it was not very much more expensive than the failed surgeries we had had done and was therefore by far the best value of the three. A few years later, our dog's eyes began to weep and our vet said the Entropian had returned (it happens). We took her back to Dr Schirlie, who immediately discounted our vet's diagnosis and instead diagnosed an eye infection which cleared up with anti-biotics. Well, now our pup is 8 years old, one of her eyes is bloodshot and weeping and our newest vet has diagnosed the return of Entropian. We are of course off to see Dr Schirlie again. We have also used the out of hours ER side off things when our dog started passing blood. We were panicing, they were calming and quickly diagnosed a UT infection. Again, the treatment was not cheap, but not unreasonable. While we were there, people came in with seriously ill pets: everyone was treated with compassion and understanding. On another occaison, I recommended NMVS to a colleague who's dog was collapsing without warning. Sadly, the diagnosis was grim; nothing could be done (the dog passed away painlessly at home a few days later).. The staff gently broke the news to my colleague, reassured her that her dog would feel no pain and what to expect in the coming days. My distressed collegue was so comforted by the staff that she wrote them a thank you card, which they took the trouble to reply to in person. NWVS may be a business but these guys do what they do because they truly care about animals. I will never take my dogs anwhere else for specialist care. read more

This review is way overdue. Circa last September, we had two cats who were brothers, and when one got very ill, the other got very ill, too. Our regular vet recommended VCA Northwest to us, so we took both cats in. The first time, we were there on an emergency basis, and VCA did a great job of stabilizing the cats: I truly think their lives were saved that day. After that, we took them in for an appointment with a specialist, Dr. Reeder. This was an expensive expedition, but worth every penny. Dr. Reeder was the best doctor I have ever interacted with (for humans or pets!). He spent a really long time examining each cat, and then he spent about 20 minutes per cat, explaining to us (with lots of diagrams) what was going on. He laid out a list of options, and accepted it when we said that we wanted to take a path of medium intervention, since the cats were old and frail. Part of their treatment involved a change in diet, and the clinic sent us home with a smorgasbord of foods for the cats to try, which worked out really well. Another part of the treatment was administering vitamin shots at home. A technician patiently showed us how to do it, and it turned out to be surprisingly easy. Another part of the treatment was administering subcutaneous fluids at home. This turned out, for us, to be impossible to do at home, but the clinic did not at all make us feel like a failure. So, if your cats are seriously illin', don't hesitate to take them here. This clinic is amazing. read more

Had to make a trip here after our dogs were in a fight and one got bit. We didn't have too wait too long before we were seen. They showed us an itemized list of the cost before anything was done which was great. We left our dog here for a few hours since they had some emergency surgeries ahead of us. They stitched her up and we couldn't have been happier with all the staff and how everything was handled. We were even refunded some money when we picked our dog up. They also offer free drain and suture removal. read more

It's taken me a year to write this review. A year has passed since my sweet cat passed away. Tonka was taken care of by the wonderful staff and team of doctors for 9 days in the ICU. They were the most compassionate, caring and kind people I have ever met. Tonka was so ill and I was out of the state. They kept me updated and continued to do everything possible to help him recover. Tonka died a year and a day ago. I miss him every day but I feel better knowing I did everything I could possibly do to save his life. Thank you Dr. Mahlum (critical care), Dr. Kuchenmeister (surgery), Dr. Brown (internal medicine) and Dr. Schutrumpf (cardiology). I drive an hour to see Dr. Zabel now for my dog and her itchy skin. Dr. Zabel has made Gia feel so much better and her fur is growing back too. This is a great hospital and it's worth the drive. read more

I will keep this short. This hospital is fantastic. I hope I never have to take an animal here again, but if I do, I feel confident they will provide the best efforts possible. My lab/pit was hit by a car and taken to another hospital that referred us to VCA after they took initial care of her. My pup was very bad off, requiring round the clock care, which VCA provides. She had two broken legs, over a dozen lacerations, some requiring stitches, and possible back injuries. VCA worked with us on price, decided to push the surgery back a day, and kept her there an extra day at their expense. He did the follow up visits at their expense, even snapping a few xrays at no cost to us. He saved us lots of money and did fantastic work. It was easy to see that DR. Peterson and his team genuinly cared. Looking at the xrays, you could see he did excellent work. He was able to align my pups bones back up perfectly, with the assistance of metal plates. The front leg was just broken in one spot, the rear leg, he had to put back together, as it was in 5 pieces. He does recommend that we pull the metal plates from both legs. He said he would only charge us for his expenses to pull them out, around 500 for the surgery to pull the plates back out. DR. Peterson and his team are FANTASTIC and very fair in price. I highly reccomend them. Oh and on the bright side, my pup healed up 2 weeks faster than expected. It was so wonderful to be able to play with her again! read more

They saved the life of my Westie who ate a toxic plant. I had no idea he did this the evening before, but the next morning he had the symptoms of potentially life-threatening hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. When I brought him in his blood pressure was so low it couldn't be measured. Everyone from the behind the counter staff to the vet techs to the vets were compassionate and professional. He had to stay 36 hours but after a slow recovery at home on medication and a special diet he is once again a happy healthy 10 year old Westie. read more

They are extremely expensive, which does cause us to hesitate and explore all other options before bringing our little dude in. I brought my dog to Northwest Veterinary Specialists in grave condition. I was impressed with (and extremely grateful for) the compassion, attention, and professionalism shown by every staff member with whom I had contact. That includes the Intake team at the front, the techs, the person who went over the paperwork with me at the end, and the veterinarian, Dr. Day. I will always be grateful to Dr. Day for making me feel as though she had all the time in the world to speak (and listen) to me. She never for a second made me feel rushed, or that she had things to do, places to go, or people to see. I was very upset about my dog's condition and Dr. Day expressed nothing but kindness and compassion. What I'll forever be grateful for is her candor and honesty about my dog's situation. Her honesty allowed me to make a fully informed decision about what to do for my dog. It also relieved me of the horrible guilt that comes with second-guessing your decisions and wondering if you did the right thing. A special shout-out also goes to Kristen, who answered my initial call to Northwest. Kristen was not only sweet and compassionate, she also volunteered to facilitate my dog's transfer from another veterinary hospital, leaving me with nothing to do but collect my dog from the other hospital and bring him to Northwest. Another person in the front whose name I don't know (she wears glasses and a big smile) was also very kind and compassionate. I'm sorry that I don't know your name, but thank you to you, too. I greatly appreciate all that the Northwest staff did to make a heartbreaking experience less painful. It's a great comfort to know that if and when I need my pets to be seen by specialists, Northwest is there. read more

I visited VCA Northwest Veterinary Hospital after my dog's normal vet recommended he see an internal medicine specialist. He'd been experiencing "fainting" spells (or possible seizures), and had slightly elevated bile acid levels that were detected in a blood test. My appointment was with Dr. Anderson, who came across as friendly in the beginning when she was listening to symptoms and assessing him. Once she started listing off 4-5 different things that could be causing it (cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, liver shunt, to name a few), I informed her that I didn't wish to spend $$$$ to have a handful of different tests done, especially when it felt like she was so unsure of the cause, even though she said she'd seen dogs with these symptoms "quite often". She said she'd work up a couple estimates with her recommendations.... She sent an assistant back into the room to deliver the two estimates, which totaled between $1300-1600! This lady couldn't give me a clear recommendation on 1-2 tests she thought would be best to pursue first, so I asked the doctor come back in to discuss further. When she returned, her demeanor had changed, and she seemed annoyed to spend more time with me, knowing I wasn't willing to pay for all the testing she'd recommended. I asked her to give me her opinion on what would be the best test to conduct first (because, duh, she's the professional), but she never could give me a confident answer. I opted to have an ultrasound done, and left him there for an hour while it was being done. When I returned, the doctor was with another patient and I was told it "would be awhile" before she'd be able to come out and go over results with me. At this point, I'd been there for over 2.5 hours, and her assistant told me she'd call as soon as she was done with her patient. This was at 4:45pm. By 6:30pm, I hadn't received a call, so I called in. When she got on the phone, she said, "I heard you werent willing to wait to speak with me" and that it'd been "such a busy afternoon" (yes, I know, I was there pretty much all afternoon, too). She went over the results with me, saying that nothing was found in the ultrasound other than a "slugged biliary tract which can be normal in aging dogs" but that didn't mean there wasn't something there.... (Ok, then why did I pay $450 for an ultrasound????) Still, she was only giving vague information, and not willing to give me any kind of REAL answers when I asked a few follow up questions on possible causes. Everything was an unknown, there were no educated guesses, either. I walked away from this experience extremely frustrated with the lack of bedside manner, and considering I'm paying almost $200 to walk in the door, I'd like a doctor to at least give me an educated guess based on the information I've given and previous test results they were provided. I know that dealing with diagnosing animals is hard because they cannot talk, but it felt like she just wanted me to spend money to throw a few tests against the wall to see if one stuck. There was no direction, and I am no closer to determining a cause than when I walked in. In my opinion, it was a huge waste of time and money and I will not be going back. read more

After my pup suddenly became unable to walk last week, I brought him to my local vet and then they referred me here, since we thought he'd need an MRI. We obviously didn't have an appointment since he was basically an emergency, but they did a great job of fitting us in with all the necessary docs. First they thought he might need surgery (based on symptoms), then thought he had a cancerous lesion (based on x-ray), then realized his platelets were dangerously low and that needed to be taken care of stat, before he bled out. So, he was a sick little boy! He wound up having to stay there 4 nights. My main observations: - Yes, these services are expensive. This isn't any different at VCA than anywhere else. An US is somewhere from $2100-$2500, and guess what? That's a typical price. My last dog needed an US - this must have been around 10 years ago, in the Chicago area - and I remember it was $2500. So, normal prices for this stuff. - Having said that, everyone was very conscious of price and would explain everything to me and I felt they were trying to keep costs down as much as possible, given how this stuff adds up quickly. No one tried to "upsell" me on anything. In fact, they advised against doing the pricey MRI, because if it DID show something, we couldn't do surgery anyway. - They took excellent care of my boy. From making sure he was comfy with his blankies, to sitting with him and petting him, to trying to tempt him to eat using yummy food. - The docs were amazing. I spoke to and saw several over the course of my dog's stay, and they were all equally great. Calling every day, sitting down on the floor to explain everything in great detail, putting up with my questions from Dr. Google, ha. So awesome. And they were GENUINELY happy when his platelet count went up! - Everyone who works there loves animals. Really. I went every day and sat in the ICU section in back for a couple of hours with my dog, so I was kind of in the background, and I heard them talk to the other animals in baby voices, coax them to get up, randomly visit them, etc. All the things you'd see with people who are true animal lovers. They were very nice to me too, even though I was probably annoying, hanging out there, hauling in tons of toys and treats, babbling to my dog, being a total basket case, etc. :-) - I was encouraged to call at any time if I had question about anything - and when I did call, I was put through to my dog's tech or vet quickly. - The people at the front desk are very nice too. (didn't want to leave them out!) So in sum, yes this was a pricey and harrowing experience, as it always is when one's baby is sick. That would be the situation anywhere. But they really made a crap situation as "easy" as it could possibly be. This was even more so the case when I had to take my beloved Kone back a couple of days later when he took a turn for the worse. Sadly, he did not make it, but again they made this horrible process as "good" as it could possibly ever be. I'm thankful for the truly compassionate people who work here, since i was a completely hysterical mess. read more

Dr. Dowling made a time in our life tolerable. His job of telling us that there was no cure for the type of lymphoma our dog had is a job I would never want. I asked for his honesty through the whole process and I couldn't appreciate it more. He helped us make the decisions along the way that we would otherwise not know how to make. He responded to our after hours phone call when our dog had several seizures over a 24hr period. I asked him if this was treatable or if this was the cancer progressing. His professionalism and honesty led us to make that dreaded decision, but also put our minds at ease that we were making the right decision. Just as with our own healthcare, you have to ask the questions and be prepared (as much as we can be) to hear things that we may not want to hear. This group of miracle workers have saved two of our furry family members. Dr. Prouty is amazing, and has been informative and direct about ongoing care and issues for our "special needs" dog. Our cocker spaniel was saved from paralysis and restored to full mobility, and later in life, saved from Thrombocytopenia. Services can be expensive, and they clearly communicate treatment costs in advance. There are often long wait times, but my pets are worth waiting for the best. I highly recommend them. I took my dying dog to this clinic to be seen by an internal medicine specialist to see if there was anything we could do to save my dog. Both the vet and tech were extremely callused and brash, showing absolutely no sensitivity to our situation, which was literally one of the worst days of our life. I have experience in healthcare, and have a background in anatomy and pathology, so I in my desperation I tried and share my opinions of my dogs ailments. The vet quickly got defensive and in an aggressive tone "do you have a medical degree?" A response that was really very insensitive and tasteless. Absolutely inexcusable how bad their bedside manner is, not to mention she never once touched my dog. Never go here. Please. Part of a Vets job is working with the owners of the animal by helping them best understand the condition of their dog as well as trying to gauge the severity of the animals state by listening to the owners perspective. read more

Dr. Amy Haraway had to deliver the worst, unexpected news about Maggie's condition. Her immune system was compromised and her chances of recovering were slim to none. I brought my dog in for some unusual swelling in the neck, I could not get into my normal veterinarian that day. When I first came in a nice tech met me and took my dog into the back. I figured it would be a little bit and then I would be brought back to talk about what was wrong. 2 1/2 hours later I go up to the desk to ask what's going on, she gave me a dirty look and said she'd check, never did. 3 hours in I ask a different person, who said she'd also check, never did. At 3 1/2 hours later, the whole time my dog being kenneled I ask if she'd even been seen, by yet a different receptionist, she finally physically went back to see. I find that NO my dog has been sitting in a kennel, when she could have at least been with me in the lobby, and has not been seen at all. I told them to just give me my dog I was leaving. 3 1/2 hours! I get they were busy but 3 1/2 hours??? That's absolutely ridiculous, especially since I had to ask 3 times, I also find that my dog pooped in the kennel, makes me wonder how long she sat in her own filth. I watched staff dilly dally, take smoke breaks, and casually wander around. I had a guy next to me with a very sick puppy and they paid him no heed, the puppy lay there lethargic and seemingly barely alive while he cradled it, obviously very distressed. He was still there when I left. His dog was in worse shape than mine and they let him sit in the lobby like that. I'll never come back, receptionists were rude and obviously lazy. In this line of work compassion is a must, and while you can't be 100% all the time, be at least 75% or go work somewhere else. read more

I can't speak for any of the other doctors, but Dr. Lozier's team was great. Very friendly and patient every time with my very antisocial terror of a chihuahua during his leg surgeries and rehabilitation. Dr. Lozier made sure to explain every option as detailed and honestly as he could, and did really good work (as far as I could tell). Of course, any vet, especially an emergency vet like this, is incredibly expensive, and my stubborn chihuahua decided to take a long time to heal which made it even more so, but Dr. Lozier was extremely kind about trying to make it as affordable as possible. We got excellent care from Dr. Kate Fernhoff via the Emergency Room. She listened to my concerns, examined our dog, ordered appropriate tests and talked me through the results. I give Fernhoff 4.5 stars. In a follow-appointment (more of an encounter) with Dr. Stephanie Wan, I had very a different experience (1 Star at best). I found Wan, an internal medicine specialist, to be uninformed, unpleasant and unhelpful. I sought the care of an internist to help me understand confusing results from medical testing, but Wan had not read our dog's medical records. Given her ignorance of the medical record, I had a hard time explaining why I was there. After I was able to frame my concerns and confusion, I asked her to speculate as to what may have caused the disparities in lab findings. She looked irritated and said, "We can never know." Perhaps Wan can be effective in the black and white zone of known ailments and detailed medical protocols. To quote her, "We can never know," cause we are not going to see her again. read more

They are amazing! We found a lost dog in the road about midnight tonight and I couldn't find the owners after driving around for a bit. I called them to see if they could scan him for a chip; they said yes and we brought him in. They were SO incredible nice and helpful with the situation. Midnight on a Saturday night they scanned him, and got the owners information and called and coordinated the pick up. They kept the pup until the owner arrived; I couldn't bring the dog home and really didn't know what to do and didn't want to leave it without getting it some help. Again, so unbelievably nice and helpful. Should I ever need 24/7 emergency vet care I will definitely be back. Thank you, VCA staff, for being so wonderful tonight. read more

Everyone at this hospital takes excellent care of your needs from emergency to check ups. They receive my highest marks I've ever given any vendor because of their excellence in their work, their authentic caring for your animal and the friendliness of the staff.
