So today, after 13 years of being a loyal customer to the only Vet my dog has ever seen, VCA Wakefield denied me in my singular moment of real need. I called them to see my dog, who was dying, and they simply said they were full today and didn't have time to see us. Shameful. Think long and hard about using this place if that's how they treat customers and patients. The one time we needed them, they turned their back on us. And don't believe whatever they say in their response about not having the facilities to treat him if he needed overnight care, I begged them to see us and they wouldn't even examine him to see what was wrong. 10 minutes late for an appointment, stuck in traffic , had been going there for a few years. Front desk said "sorry you'll have to reschedule , you're late". Empty waiting room , policy is 10 minutes late they won't see you. So unreasonable , inflexible, and rude. Most places would at least inform you of their policy , then going forward I'd know, and expect this. Not going back, lost my business. Plenty of vets to choose from. It's like an animal factory , so impersonal. Called to speak to a manger about the incident, no phone call back. Company clearly doesn't care. read more

I've been bringing my fur children to this vet for over 8 years. I couldn't be happier. The service has been compassionate and patient. The veterinarians and the front desk staff have been wonderful to me. My oldest pup just passed away 2 weeks ago. It was one of the hardest things to go through but Dr. Grunkina & the staff at VCA Wakefield were compassionate & supportive & that made all the difference. My 10-year-old hound mix rescue was a patient at VCA Wakefield. He saw various vets and techs over the years. We really never had a complaint until recently. In mid-December he was bleeding from his private parts, so I took him in right away. They made a presumptive diagnosis of a UTI and started him on meds. The urinalysis later came back fine, but we completed the meds. For the most part that issue seemed to resolve after a few weeks. In February he began to act lethargic and wasn't eating or acting like his normal self. We did the senior bloodwork, including a urinalysis, and everything came back normal. He seemed to bounce back again after a few weeks. Just a few weeks ago he seemed to be declining in health again, so we headed back. A presumptive diagnosis of a tick-borne illness was made. We declined on a $400 blood test to confirm as we were told there are often false positives/negatives and that's a lot of money to us, so we began doxycycline and a pain reliever. He was back to his old self after just one dose of meds. We were so relieved and were sure we were on the right track. However, once the pain meds ended, he quickly declined. By the end of the week he was bleeding heavily from his private parts and wasn't eating at all. We went in and were advised to head straight up the ER so that they could ultrasound the area that was bleeding, as the VCA does not have the ability to do ultrasounds. Unfortunately, it didn't even take an ultrasound. The Dr at the ER did an extrusion and found he was covered in masses on his private parts. We decided to say goodbye right away as to not prolong his pain. We're sad that this type of exam was never done/suggested before as it robbed us of being able to do some things we'd like to do with him in his final days. I hope if another case like this ever comes into the office, they will think of Jeffrey I did call last week to speak with a manager about why this went this way. I spoke with Shannon who was lovely, and she said someone would definitely call back, but it's been one full week and no call ever came in. read more

Had a fantastic first visit to VCA Wakefield with my dog, Rosco. After previously going to a "drop him off in the morning, we'll call you when he's ready" type of place, it made me feel so comfortable and confident in his care to be present in the room for the appointment. Rosco stayed close to me at first but quickly warmed up to the nurse and doctor, and we were able to cover all of my concerns and discuss options. My avian vet left recently to be closer to his home as travel time was great from New York..we loved him..once he knew I was facing losing my home but was spending whatever was necessary on my pets care..One day I had to choose between 2 necessary tests so he ordered them both for me. I'd paid thousands up to that point. So now I send me whenever I can to have on account for any of my bird who need it. I can just take a burd there if it's an emergency too, knowing I have enough in the account to cover most anything needed relatively speaking. W3 also have had other avian vets there several and I like all of them. I'm 72 and educated in avian care, have had birds all my life have taught others burd care so am very fussy. We now will see the practice Mgr who is an avian vet. I like him very much..he thinks like me as far as bird care and that is very special. I highly recommend them. read more

Very happy with my experience here! I have a bearded dragon and it's not easy to find exotic vets. They took their time asking lots of questions and seemed to genuinely care. They did one test at a time to rule out possible diagnostics before overloading on tests that ultimately would cost more. I don't see many reviews that help get an idea of cost, so for reference mine came out to about $300 without insurance. That's not bad at all! Overall great experience. read more

Going to the doctors can be very scary guys. You have to go in the car, sit in a crate, and sometimes there's other species like dogs and reptiles. The staff on the phones, nurse and doctor were very respective to my needs. The doctor was very reassuring and as a cat felt comfortable meeting her the first time. The doctor advised a gastrial and fluid injection, set me up with food and medicine for the week and is text contact with my Mom. Please BEWARE. My dog has bad allergies. His nails were getting long and I was concerned that he would hurt himself even more than he had already. So I told the vet tech to cut his nails. I didn't ask the price because all the other vets I have gone to have charged me no more than 25.00 dollars and I figured that it would be worth it to keep my dog safe. I was charged FORTY THREE DOLLARS and SIXTY FIVE CENTS! My dog is a chihuahua. I could go to almost any groomer and get a full treatment for this amount. I can't believe it. My heart is broken because I was so dumb not to ask the price before hand. My bird and my hamster have both recently received medical attention at the Wakefield VCA. Each doctor was very knowledgeable and caring. They held my little pets so gently. They listened to heart and lungs on both. My finch was there for his check up. My poor little hamster had a giant sore on his side. They asked permission for a biopsy, which I agreed to. They prescribed three meds , one oral and two topical. Candi, my hamster liked them all. Her follow up is in two days. Both my cats were seniors and diabetic (Rescues) both cats had advanced dental issues. My kitty on the left needed close to 20 teeth pulled, and it was the best $1.100 I spent! If I could leave 0 stars I would. We have a pet rabbit with stability issues and they went straight into testing for parasites without ever checking the rabbits legs or ears for possible structural damage / ear infection. They took our rabbit in the back and claimed to have checked her out - they did not. Since the appointment was run on a fear based mentality, the appointment wound up costing us close to $900. After that we were told all the tests came back negative and there was zero follow up even after we informed them that our rabbit is still having issues. Do not go here, especially if you have rabbits. They are a cash grab and do not care about the animal. read more

Accidentally cut my dogs nail beyond the quick, tried packing it with cornstarch/baking soda to no avail, continued to bleed. I called VCA and was able to get him in for treatment within 30-40 minutes. I was a wreck, so cannot express how relieved I was that they could patch him up so fast. read more

I am writing a complaint about VCA Wakefield. We have a 15 year old dog & he is a client at this facility & has been seen there before. It was about 8:30pm Thursday, August 19 & my husband called inquiring if they could see my 15 year old dog who was bleeding. He was very upset because he could not tell where the bleeding was coming from. They said they were closing and to call Mass Vet, which we had called right before calling VCA. Mass Vet told us to call VCA. I am horrified at the treatment my husband got from the clerk he spoke to. She was not professional and very uncaring and was not interested in helping us at all. In fact, she hung right up on my husband. We are going to file a formal complaint against the receptionist/tech with VCA. Her attitude was more about leaving than trying to help us. I am never disappointed by the quality and care I receive at this practice. I started working with them when I had a dog/people reactive dog and they treated her with such care and love she relaxed and was a fantastic dog for them. I now have the most mellow and snuggly of dogs, with some special medical needs, and they remain supportive and fantastic. Most recently I went in and told the staff that he had passed his AKC Good Citizenship test. ALL the staff behind the counter came out to give him love. The vets will contort themselves and get on the floor to take care of my dog's feet. They will sit and give him time to relax. I have never felt rushed, pushed, or treated inconsiderately there. Getting more and more disappointed with VCA Tried for 3 weeks to get an appointment to no avail. Was told appointments are for well checks only. Had to call very early in morning with hopes of getting my sick cat there that day. Never worked. Finally got my cat in on a Saturday, took an X-ray of her chest ($518). Left Saturday with the expectation that the radiologist was going to read the X-ray on monday. Still have not heard anything. She needs to be on antibiotics! Called today, and was told, not sure when the radiologist will be able to read the X-ray! Seriously? Been going there for years too, but they don't seem to be on their game there anymore. I posted this review on Google but wanted it here as well- I can not speak highly enough about this place. I tragically lost two of my beloved babies in a short period of time having never lost a pet and they were absolutely phenomenal. Incredibly kind, accommodating, respectful and compassionate. They went out of their way to make this awful time a little more bearable. I can't thank the entire staff enough for how amazing that they were. We even got beautiful boxes with our pet's ashes and paw imprints with their names. It was incredibly thoughtful. Scheduling is always easy and their flexibility is unparalleled- twice I've booked online only to have them call to offer me an appointment ten times sooner than I expected, and well outside normal business hours which was exactly what I needed. I can't believe how lucky we got deciding to go here- I've never seen a vet with more convenient hours. I took my younger cat there for the first time a little while ago and they were so great with her. We recently got a kitten (clearly I'm a cat lady but despite how it sounds, we only have two at the moment ). His first check-up is Tuesday and I could not feel more comfortable taking him somewhere that puts your pet's comfort first 100% of the time (and their owners' comfort, too!). Put on hold constantly -- the front desk needs training. Never received any calls back from the vet (Dr. Story) after several times leaving messages. i agree with other reviews "it's all about the money" NOT the level of care for your pet/family member. I will eventually find a vet that cares. I had switched from Banfield to here due to their front desk being a little rude, HUGE mistake -- The vets at Banfield were wonderful and caring -- I should have stayed there and worked around the front desk - BIG mistake on my part for leaving them. read more

We have been going here for about four months now with our new corgi puppy. It was a first for both of us, owning a dog at this age, so we both did a ton of research to decide which hospital would have the best care and I'm glad we found them. Everyone has been great that we have encountered, from the front desk help to the docs themselves. During appointments, you can tell the vets are well trained and love their jobs, giving all interactions with animals their thorough attention and care needed while asking owners questions to ensure nothing is overlooked to maintain a healthy pet. I love that his name is displayed prominently on the chalkboard when arriving, the pup is offered a treat and we are tempted by granola bars and coffee. There are separate waiting areas for dogs and cats so there is less interaction, something I hadn't seen at any of the previous vet offices I've encountered but a wonderful idea nonetheless. After the first visit, we went with a care plan that runs about $70/month for the first year. At first I balked at it but only having to pay a handful of times out of pocket for some medication, it has been very beneficial in terms of budgeting for a puppy and all of the rounds of shots and surgeries that go along with it. Last week, we picked him up from his neutering appointment and although he whimpered much of the first night and I thought the e-collar was a bit big for an under 20 lb. dog, his surgery was a wonderful success. The collar is now off and there were no post-op issues, he was back to normal in no time and never seemed to be in pain with the medication offered. I see no need to go anywhere else at this point so we are hoping they are our animal hospital for the next decade plus. Keep doing you VCAW, and we will continue to happily return. read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE! ESPECIALLY TO SEE DR O LEARY! We had a 2 month old kitten we brought to vca Wakefield for his 2nd round of shots. Upon examination DR O LEARY said our kitten had a heart murmur that "may go away on its own". Our kitten was fine for the time being. Fast forward to his next round of shots. Dr o Leary said the murmur was still present but didn't need to be looked into yet. 3 weeks after that appointment our kitten collapsed while playing so we had another vet check him. He was in full blown heart failure at this stage. The other vet said there was no way dr o Leary didn't know the situation our kitten was in. If Dr o Leary told us how serious it was at the first examination we might have been able to save him. We are now out of options due to Dr o learys malpractice we must euthanize our kitten. Please do not bring your pets here, they do not care about animals. We will be reporting Dr o Leary and he will hopefully have his license stripped. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE read more

I am very disappointed in the service I have received with VCA Wakefield Animal hospital. I have brought my dog to their vet since she was a puppy which she is now 8 years old. She has been seen prior no problem if she ever pulled a muscle or something wasn't right. Today I called and I was put on hold for the tech to talk to the doctor. The tech cane back saying the doctor thinks she should go to the ER. There's not one sign she needs immediate ER attention as she never needed them prior. She tried to diagnose my dog without seeing them because they didn't want to see her? When I asked the tech to go talk to the doctor again they left me on hold for over a half hour. I am very disgusted with the way I was treated. I never have had an issue in the past but the way I was treated is not ok and acted as if they did not want to see my dog at all. read more

So incredibly impressed with this vet. I was new to the area during COVID and called 8 different vets who all told me they were not accepting new patients. I was about to have to go to an emergency hospital that quoted me $500 to just see my dog and then I called VCA Wakefield in one last ditch effort and they got me in that evening! They are patient and understanding. They truly care about your pet. The vet even came outside with me during the visit so that my dog could walk around and use the bathroom because she had a stomach bug and basically had the entire appointment outside in the rain with me because my dog needed to be outside. So incredibly sweet and accommodating. Really made sure all my concerns were addressed before I left. Reasonably priced. I just wish I lived closer to their office! read more

I'm so delighted with VCA Wakefield. I've been coming here for three years for my corgi, since I've taken him home with me at 9 weeks old. VCA's fully staffed vets and techs are so gentle and kind and the front desk staff couldn't be sweeter and helpful. Making appointments are easy-peasy. You can either call or set up an appointment online or through your phone. If there was anything else that I'm highly fond of, it's VCA's methods of communication. I've gotten calls and received detailed messages as well as text messages from the doctors and front office staff, themselves. I can't think of any place better. I'm so glad I get to come here with my pets and check up on their health. Other plus': Help yourself to snacks, coffee, tea, and water for all visitors, treats that cats and dogs can't deny. Seating is sectioned to separate dogs from cats and small animals to prevent any awkward contact. read more

At VCA Wakefield, the people are usually very kind and greet us with warmth. There are also so many great vets that are also knowledgeable. Despite being unhappy with the trauma of our other dog being put down at this location (it was not peaceful AT ALL), we gave this location another shot when we got our puppy three years ago. So far it has been good - despite the expensive bills. However, recently we have been unhappy. We have been unable to get an appointment that is convenient to our schedules - even when scheduling over a week out and not happy with some of the service recently. I understand that they are busy, so I have been patient with this. The people are very polite and ask us to call at 7:30 AM to see if there are any cancellations. I called this morning to inquire about an opening and asked if I could change which vet my dog sees to get a time slot that is more convenient. I instead, got a lecture about how they have over 7,000 clients and that it's not just my dog that needs to be seen. I thought this was rude and unnecessary. Immediately she tried to change her tone and asked me to call again tomorrow to see if there are openings but a she already lost me. So this was the last straw for me. Since they have so many clients, we will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

I've called this place and Salem's. Salems had openings. My syrian hamster looked like he was suffering, and I felt like the humane thing to do was to put him down. I called to get a quote but was told it would be $88 for exam fees, and then told it would probably cost me $350 (estimation) to put him down. That much for...a small hamster? It was that much when we had to put our small 9lbs elderly cat down last year from cancer (different company). These prices are completely unreasonable..I did the best I could for him at home and he passed in his sleep finally. I'm heart broken that I couldn't have ended his pain sooner. VCA.. you need to fix these prices and give more accuracy on how much it's going to cost, post it on your website. Came here because we had a really bad experience at Saugus Animal Hospital. The staff from receptionists to nurses and doctors were so loving and caring for my animals. I felt relieved that my animals were in good hands. and received good care. Saugus Animal Hospital did the bare minimum for both of my animals. Who have health issues. There were many instances but for example my dog has had a cough. Saugus Animal Hospital ignored me when I told them about it. Didn't exam him for it. And didn't offer anything to help him. At VCA the very nice doctor did exam him found the issue and gave him medication for it. It's been 24 hours and my dog hasn't coughed. I'm so very grateful for VCA Wakefield read more

Dr. McNeils compassion, love, and care she gave for our late Alaska and for our current babies is going to be with us for years to come. She informed us last night as Genesis was getting his first vet check up she's leaving, and moving to Texas with her husband. I wish her and her husband all the best. I am only giving two stars because they were the only place taking new patients in my area and got me a next day appointment. Otherwise I am not happy. The hospital needs to assure all staff is properly trained and have the animals best interest at heart. Long story short- over a span of 4 days I had my 3 kitten in for an appointment where he was diagnosis with pneumonia, a few days later I was told he had an enlarged heart and absesses on his lungs, he was gradually getting sicker, he was having more bad than good days, he was crying out and howling. I called and asked about euthanasia, was given an appointment to euthanize, mentally and emotionally prepared myself and the doctor refused to do it because it was against her morals and she didn't feel he was sick enough (even though she had just told me he was more legatheric than 3 days prior, his lungs were still not clear indicating antibiotic for pneumonia wasn't working, his body temp was low, on day 3 of refusing food he was dehydrated. I told her he was not moving at home, only laying down and crying but she wouldn't euthanize. Instead told me she wanted to do extensive expensive tests, which I told her I didn't want given how sick he was. She told me I should surrender him so he could go to a shelter for them to do the testing. A final option she gave me was to send him home after giving him fluids and an appetite stimulant. I took him home. He howled. He never moved. His breathing got worse, his howling and crying got worse. My baby was now struggling and suffering. He was open mouth breathing and gasping for air. Called VCA and was told to take him to the emergency hospital. While on the phone my kitten took his last breath and passed away. He struggled for the last 2.5 hours of his life. I wish the staff was all trained to look at the quality of life of an animal and take into consideration the owners wishes. read more
