This is our 5 year old

I i've been taking my two shepherds to this vet since August 2020. (One is 5 the other is 2 both from breeders) On this visit on June 27,2022 My five-year-old shepherd was due for a three-year rabies and a three-year DHPP shot. When my husband walked out with our shepherd they did NOT give her her 2 shots they wanted our shepherd knocked out on meds to give her these shots. I'm sorry but when she was in there at her last visit in January 2022 ( 6 months prior) she was given her shots no problem. there was and have not been any issues that she had to be SEDATED for anything in her life!!!! NEVER!!!They also charged my husband $113.00 for visit which I am trying to get back as I have pulled both my dogs from this vet practice. They do NOT seem like "dog" people. I was unsure about this place right from the start and didn't like how the vets are in there with my dogs. Do not take your dog here they are not dog friendly at all. Also I've waited for 4 days to get both my dogs records emailed to me and they have yet to do so!!!!!!!! Also would like to add 3 things 1- the owner Dr Elizabeth Shurland was so unprofessional she hung up on me while I was talking ....after I requested my dogs records 2- it is now 4 days later NO RECORDS SENT YET 3- I just called spoke to Jennifer who was extremely nice and said it's not a problem it'll just take 2 seconds she will send the records right over. Too bad all people that work there were not as nice as Jennifer....

Poor Spooker boy. Getting some TLC for a bad tooth.

I'm trying to find the right words to adequately praise Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital…read more(MVRH), its staff, and Dr. Kelly Larabee, an Emergency Physician whose compassion and professionalism made an extraordinarily difficult day more bearable. While traveling from northern New Hampshire to Boston, we stopped in Woburn and discovered that one of our very elderly dogs could no longer get out of the car on her own. When she finally did, her rear legs collapsed beneath her. In addition to the weakness in her hind legs, she was breathing rapidly and drooling excessively. As a longtime dog owner, I recognized the look in her eyes immediately--the look that says, "It's time." Fortunately, we were less than a mile from Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, a Level 1, 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. We arrived without an appointment and were met by a team that was immediately welcoming, compassionate, and remarkably efficient. It was clear from the moment we walked through the door that MVRH has built a system of care designed to deliver expert treatment with both urgency and empathy. Our dog was promptly brought into the treatment area and made comfortable. Shortly thereafter, we met Dr. Kelly Larabee, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern were evident from our first conversation. Dr. Larabee confirmed what we had feared but already suspected--that the time had come for our beloved companion to cross the rainbow bridge peacefully. Dr. Larabee and her team brought an extraordinary degree of humanity to veterinary emergency medicine. They treated our dog with dignity, tenderness, and respect, as though she were a member of their own family. During one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can experience, they provided not only exceptional medical care but also comfort and compassion for us. I am not sure the average pet owner--or member of the public--fully appreciates the expertise, systems of care, and operational excellence that make an institution like Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital function so effectively. Having spent much of my career in process engineering, I was deeply impressed by both the efficiency of their operations and the quality of care they delivered. Every aspect of our experience reflected a well-designed system staffed by highly skilled professionals who never lost sight of the human and emotional side of their work. Dr. Larabee and the entire MVRH team were as compassionate as they were capable, and as caring as they were efficient. Their professionalism and humanity turned a heartbreaking day into one marked by dignity, peace, and gratitude. We would all be fortunate to receive the same standard of care in human medicine.

The moment I ask, "Do you want to go to school?" my dog is up and ready, heading straight for the door. It's such a joy to see her excitement as we drive down the street - she knows exactly where we're going and I can't contain her enthusiasm, bouncing from window to window. When we finally pull up, I have to brace myself because she drags me to the front door, eager to get inside. It's adorable how her whole-body wiggles like an "S" when she's excited - it never fails to make me laugh. Under the new ownership, which has been in place since 2023, Pet Companions Bed and Biscuit has only improved. The facility looks better than ever, with separate rooms for chilling out, enjoying treats, solving puzzles, and even taking nature walks with the staff. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! There's so much more for the dogs to do besides playing with their friends. They even offer grooming and cageless boarding. This place is truly amazing, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Our dogs have been enrolled in Banfield Wellness Plans for a quarter of a century, and have been very well served, and cared for, by their Banfield Wellness Plans, and Banfield hospitals. The dogs have maintained excellent health, because of their Banfield Wellness Plans, and veterinary care. In my opinion, the Veterinarians and staff at the Banfield Pet Hospital in Stoneham, MA, work exceptionally hard, to do a good job, and take care of our dogs. Our dogs recently had their annual dental exams and cleanings, and one of them had two masses removed. The dogs were very well cared for. These types of appointments should be straightforward, but the pricing structure makes them feel unnecessarily expensive. I also have concerns about how far in advance procedures are discussed or pre-booked, including procedures that can cost thousands of dollars, before it is even clear whether the pet will actually need the same procedure again. As a pet owner, that does not give me confidence that care is being handled in the most practical or transparent way. Banfield is owned by Mars, a massive corporation, and that is exactly how the experience feels: corporate, expensive, and policy-driven. There are many local and independent veterinary clinics in the Stoneham/Melrose area with excellent reputations, and I would rather support a practice where the care feels more personal and the billing feels more reasonable. Before booking here, I would strongly recommend asking exactly what you will be charged for, whether the appointment can be scheduled as a technician visit, and whether a full exam fee will be added even for a minor service.

I am beyond disappointed with Banfield Pet Hospital and especially the management at this location…read more I booked an appointment TWO DAYS in advance for my dog, who is limping and clearly in pain. The appointment was scheduled for 5:30 PM. Then, the MORNING OF THE APPOINTMENT, I get a call saying they suddenly need to reschedule due to a "conflict." This has happened repeatedly with this location -- almost every later-day appointment I've booked somehow ends up needing to be moved. At this point, it feels less like bad luck and more like they simply don't want to honor late appointments. When I politely pointed out that this keeps happening, I was given a vague "system error" excuse. Then I was told they "wouldn't be able to do X-rays that late." As someone familiar with animal handling and basic veterinary procedures, I asked whether they were assuming sedation would be needed, because for a dog of this size and the location of the injury, sedation would likely be unnecessary and the positioning for the X-ray would be very straightforward. Instead of having a professional conversation, the manager became defensive and accused ME of being rude. He then lectured me about staffing shortages and implied I should have just taken time off work. That response was unbelievably inappropriate and dismissive. Pet owners schedule appointments in advance specifically because many of us work full-time jobs and rely on the appointment time we were given. I understand staffing issues happen. What I do NOT understand is repeatedly canceling or moving appointments last minute and then treating concerned pet owners with disrespect when they question it. The most concerning part is that this behavior came from the manager himself. If this is how management handles clients, it explains a lot about the ongoing issues at this location. I will be escalating this to corporate because this was unacceptable customer service and, more importantly, poor care coordination for an animal in pain.

Additionally, from reading other review online, it sounds like this vet needs to retire or hire another person to help him run the business if he's planning on being out of town so often. My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes and on the call when Dr Jawitz told me the diagnosis he told me he doesn't treat chronic conditions because he's not in the office enough and recommended I take my cat to the veterinary hospital for treatment. We had visited other stores in the area but were put off by the high prices and the shoddy food/clothing selections. Our puppy really had a hard time the first year with stomach issues, so it was important to find a brand of food our vet recommended. Surprisingly, Gone to the Dogs was exceptional in both food selection(s) and clothing - even the toys are better made than most places offer - and the owner, Gina, and her mother, Kay, were more than helpful in guiding us to finding just what we needed and if they didn't have an item in stock (or didn't carry it in-store) they'd offer to special order and call when it arrived at a reasonable price. I know I'm waxing poetic about GTD (I honestly love this place), but I'd be remiss in not mentioning that the one (and only) time we had an issue with a product Gina gladly offered a discount for another item. (Had to bring this up because of another customer's negative posting) I admit to buying items that didn't work out for our dogs but knew that returning wasn't an option and was okay with this...lesson learned and a bit poorer. HA I As our dog family grew to two, I have to say the last couple of years of visiting more than a few times a month has endeared Gina and Kay to our family and we would be lost without the shop! Sound advice is plentiful, as is a good sample treat with a head rub for our dogs every visit and the doggy bakery (birthday cakes, cookies, etc.) is like no other! Honestly, the bottom line is that there is no other place like this in the Wakefield area. The prices are reasonable, quality & selection of products amazing, customer service outstanding.
