I was traveling with a friend who has diabetes. Fortunately he's on the lower end so monitoring his sugar and carbohydrate levels is important. But since I was on vacation, I was in the mood for ice cream. Searching around, we were near Vedder's. Read over the history and WOW! What a great concept to work from and create a frozen dessert that appeals to everyone. Daveed got a mini chocolate ice cream. He said there was a delicate coconut flavor but overall, really good! I had to have an ice cream sandwich. I ordered chocolate chip cookies and salted caramel ice cream. Soooooooooooo Good! There were other flavors that sounded inviting and will have to wait for another day! There are some small tables out front which is nice. The shop is located in the Old Town center which is really cool, a little touristy but hey, I'm on vacation. In my excitement, I missed the doggy cookies that were for sale. But Cako did get a small taste of the ice cream. Cako Approves!

1st off I've never had vegan icecream, my error; thought it was a dairy icecream shop. $8 small cup of banana fosters. It was tasty. No refined sugar used, dates are used to sweeten it. It wasn't bad but I'm not sure if I would try it again. Very good customer service. Cute little shop with quite a few flavors to offer.

I've been to one other place like this and really enjoyed it, but this one is even better. First of all, it's tucked away on a charming little street filled with shops and cafés. The menu offers a wide variety of unique flavors,We decided on the Matcha Lavender and the Mango Berry. The Mango Berry tasted very homemade and fresh, with real mango and berry flavor and a touch of syrup that worked nicely. The Lavender Matcha was even better--super rich and creamy, and best of all, not overly sweet like at many ice cream shops. The service was fine, and I loved the design of the place; it felt like a cozy wooden café you'd find in a resort town.

Dairy free + gluten free HEAVEN! I was so excited to try Vedder's! The staff was super friendly, and I loved that you could customize your ice cream cookie sandwich with whatever flavor you choose. The ice cream sandwich was HUGE, so my husband and I definitely could have shared one, but we were both excited to try our own flavors.

We go to Vedders every once in a while because my daughter is lactose intolerant. The ice cream is good and we like the ingredients they use. We usually get scoops but this time we ordered a pint. When we got home, the pint wasn't even filled to the top. Also, there was a whole air pocket inside the pint. My guess that there was only 2/3 of the pint filled. I emailed Ashley but have not received a response so I'm posting here. Just wanted clarification so we know not to order a pint again if this is the usual pint they sell and for everyone else to know what to expect.

The cookies are ESSENTIAL Equally as special as their yummy treats is their mission! "Vedder discovered that cane sugar causes the brain to rot - sugar addiction, decreased cognition, tension, depression, dementia, and memory loss were side effects of its consumption. She began working on her vegan recipes, sweetened with dates and maple syrup, right away. Vedder's husband, Justin, was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's in 2014 and developing healthy eating plans has been crucial to slowing the progression of the disease. Each ice cream flavor caters to his plan as a limited ingredient dessert option." A portion of their sales goes to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research too! You have to come for the Chocolate Mint Ice Cream flavor. We also had a chance to come here a few weeks ago. Ice cream is like a homemade flavor, if you have ever had ice cream homemade from scratch. The chocolate chip itself is not bad, especially since it's vegan and gluten free making it a good option for people. However, it does taste like it has freezer burn and is not creamy like a ice cream making it fall apart really easy and hard hard to scoop. The size was falsely advertised and we were rung up for a regular despite the size of the cup being the same size as the mini. Will not be coming back :( read more

Kayla served us before closing she made the experience so special and joyful. We have been driving from San Diego to enjoy Vedders ice cream for years. There is no place like it. The quality is outstanding, free of toxins and delicious. The staff is welcoming, present and kind. Absolutely delicious. Our household consists of all kinds of crazy allergens and preferences so when we first tried the ice cream we were ecstatic! Initially we met the gorgeous owner and loved her enthusiasm of providing amazing quality treats for those with food sensitivities. Shared a pint of the cookie crunch and knew instantly we'd return. Today we had the opportunity of trying the ice cream sandwich and mini with cone. Both amazing. Served by a young employee who also had pride of his employer (hard to find these days). WOW wow wow Ok, as a mama to kids with milk-protein allergies, maybe I'm a bit biased, or maybe it makes me a better judge of dairy-free ice creams, who knows, but this spot was remarkable. Not only is it adorably decorated in its cozy little store-front but the fact that it was not only vegan but ALSO gluten free put it above and beyond so many others. For autoimmune reasons we eat a very particular diet and I about died when I found this spot on our vacation. The employees were friendly and patient. The shop front cute and clean The flavor choices were great and we struggled to pick just two. Now I know next time to also leave with a pint as a parting gift to myself. Another thing I love? They make a donation from all of their sales to the Michael J Fox charity. Is there any more reason to love this place? I can't rave enough about it. Unfortunately my phone was dead so I didn't get to snap pics but please do yourself a favor and stop in here Luckily we are only a 45 min drive away and I WILL be back read more

I have been gluten free + dairy free for about 7 years now and I always have the hardest time finding good (or any) desserts that are both gluten and dairy free. If you want delicious ice cream AND gluten free cones AND cookies, look no further than Vedder's. I was blown away. The man working there was super helpful and let me know confidently that his favorite flavor was coffee - which my husband loved. He also highly recommended the strawberry - as did the man carrying supplies to the back. I will go back, as it was not only delicious, but the man helping us and the other man in the shop were very helpful, nice and made us feel welcome. Thanks Vedder's! read more

My wife, son and I were dining nearby and decided to drop in for ice cream. My wife and I shared 4 flavors of ice cream: Coconut Macadamia Nut, Mint Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate, and Strawberry. The ice cream was rich, creamy and delicious and they were big scoops. My son was equally happy with his Mint Chip ice cream. Happened upon this place while grabbing lunch in the same shopping center. I was so excited to learn their ice cream is gluten and (refined) sugar free. As someone who's had to cut those two out of my diet I never thought I'd be able to have ice cream. Their equipment was broken when we went in but the owner was so incredibly sweet. She had some frozen scoops available so we were able to try the salted caramel. It was so yummy and creamy! Even my husband who is not a fan of most "alternative" ingredients said he enjoyed it. Was craving some ice cream after watching the sunset at TStreet and came across Vedder's, with 5 star reviews it HAD to be delicious. Sad to say, it was nothing of the sort . I got my son two scoops (mini scoops) with a cone and got 2 scoops in a cup. My son was not a fan at all, and I ended up tossing it after 2 attempted tries. The only reason I finished most of mine was the fact that I had just spent almost 20 bucks on the smallest scoops of ice cream ever! Cutest ice cream shop in old town San Clemente. The "n"ice cream flavors are excellent. Strawberry and cookie dough are a personal favorite for me. I love ice cream cookies and was thrilled to find a gluten-free option. The cookies are homemade and aren't too heavy, which is great. I actually don't like the huge ice cream cookies that make you feel like you ate a whole meal. The portion size for these are perfect. In my opinion, the chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream is a wonderful combination. The owner is super kind and helpful. It's nice that you can try samples here. Would recommend! read more

Vedder's Sweets is San Clemente's newest sweet shop, located in Old Town San Clemente. All of our nice creams are vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and sweetened only with organic dates and/or maple syrup! We cater to those with dietary restrictions and health conscious sweet tooths.

History

Established in 2019.

After a trip to the local frozen yogurt shop left Vedder's founder, Ashley Vedder, and her family with belly aches and a sleepless night, Vedder had an epiphany. Why on Earth was it so difficult to find a non-dairy ice cream without cane sugar that would leave dessert advocates feeling healthy and guilt-free? You know when you're starving after being out all day and almost anything sounds good? This wasn't one of those situations where the food just tasted good because we were hungry. Everything that came to the table was legitimately impressive. We started with the chips and salsa, and immediately knew we were in for a good meal. The chips were fresh and crispy, and the different salsas each had their own flavor instead of just tasting like different levels of heat. The creamy green one was especially good. We kept going back to it. The Birria Quesadilla was ridiculous. The tortilla had that perfect golden crisp on the outside, plenty of melted cheese, and the birria inside was tender, juicy, and actually flavorful. Dip it into the consommé and it takes it to another level. Add a little guacamole and pico and you get the perfect combination of crispy, cheesy, rich, fresh, and savory all in one bite. We also had the Carne Asada and this is where I really have a hard time describing how good the food was. The texture, preparation, and flavor of the meat were all on point. It had a beautiful char on the outside while still being tender and juicy inside. Nothing tasted overly seasoned or covered up. You could actually taste the quality and preparation of the meat. Even the rice, beans, pico, guacamole, and bacon wrapped jalapeño on the plate felt like they belonged there instead of being random sides thrown on to fill the plate. The portions were generous too. This is the kind of Mexican food where you can tell someone actually cares about how each component is prepared. There are different textures throughout the meal, crispy tortillas, tender meat, creamy guacamole, fresh pico, rich beans, and everything works together. The restaurant itself has a great San Clemente feel. It's lively and casual, but still nice enough that you could come here for more than just a quick meal. We came in after a soccer tournament and felt completely comfortable, but I could just as easily see coming back for brunch, dinner, or drinks. And after looking through the menu, there are already several things I want to come back and try. The menu goes way beyond the typical tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. Filet mignon tacos, short rib, blackened shrimp, seafood, birria noodles, bowls, burgers, brunch, there is A LOT happening here. What impressed me most was how well the food was actually executed. Sometimes restaurants with huge menus do a little bit of everything but nothing particularly well. That wasn't our experience at Asada. We came in tired and hungry after a soccer tournament and left talking about the food. Asada Cantina + Kitchen is absolutely going on our San Clemente list. The texture, preparation, and taste of the food are honestly hard to put into words. You just need to try it.

Love this as a local dairy free ice cream option. I have had their fresh scooped ice cream before which was great. I went in for a couple pints the other day to have on hand in event my sweet tooth wants ice cream. 2 things I suggest, maybe a seal on top of the ice cream because there was a gooey like film on top that had a tinge if frost bite taste. Second is maybe dating the pints so I know when it was scooped because the combination of the film along with no date led me to believe the ice cream may have been older? The strawberry was good and had a creamy texture once I got passed the film, but the mint chip (which is my favorite flavor) took quite a while to thaw and even when it did it was more flaky than creamy. 3 stars for fresh scoops but minus 2 for the to go pints, I was not impressed with the quality for $12 each.... read more

The acai was a little icey but wasn't too sweet. The ratio of acai compared to fruit was off, the bowl was like split in half of acai base and the other of fruit. I don't think the manager or owner evened it out well. Doesn't matter because it still tasted good! The granola was crunchy and sweet. After a long day in Laguna Beach, it was the perfect treat. They also have one in Laguna Beach too we just made our way to Dana Point for another obligation. Inside, they have seating and a big menu to choose from. They also have a bathroom and water station. Inside it's cute, clean and there's seating, but they also have a few tables and chairs outside so we ate out there. I went with the Campground which has both Pitaya and Acai base, some granola and berries and banana slices. They were busy at the time making orders and we didn't wait too long for ours to come out. I will say, the bases were a little frost bitten or more icy when I got it, but it did melt down a bit more once I started eating it and then everything started to blend and it tasted good. I'm a huge fan of Blue Bowl and feel like nothing compares to theirs, but Alohana is on par with that. It's good if you want to take it to go and let it melt down a little to have that smooth consistency instead of fighitng with it and getting chunks at a time of the base. Definitely would recommend coming here after a long day at the beach or picking one up before heading to the beach to enjoy there. They also sell coffee and other random, but very cool, tchotchkes, clothes, art, that you wouldn't find at any other Acai bowl shop and it's very Dana Point. Great place to pick-up a unique souvenir if you're visiting from out of town.

I found the prices to be slightly under what you would see at Whole Foods and sprouts. I'm hoping that this is the Norm, And not just pricing to get people to come in for their grand opening. I did sign up to receive their discount discounts and special pricing, discount days. So far, they have been very good. I am impressed with the ongoing sales. Nothing you can do about the parking people. Get over it....

French quiche is always served with a side of mixed greens, at least in my experience. It lacked that bit of refreshment by not having the greens with it. I called and asked why all the photos show it being served differently than I was given and I was told they stopped doing that a year ago. Very disappointed. In general, the taste was average.

I never asked for a refund, even though I was pretty much cornered into buying double what I actually ordered, yet she just said she couldn't do it and didn't seem to give two craps about me. No apologies, no empathy, no hospitality, just looking me like "gtfo so I can go back to my desk and watch TikTok you sucker." I understand the store policy might be trash and the employees can't do much of that, but I basically got backed into a corner of buying WAY too much ice cream for one person and overpaying too, and no one at that store seemed to care. If the owner sees this, I hope the couple cents you saved by being an asshole was worth it. If you knew anything about business, I'd probably come back. But I'll take my money elsewhere.
