No hyperbole here, I had the worst meal of my life at this (charming looking) little restaurant. I ordered something they called soup, but was more like a sticky syrupy dark gel with chunks of goat meat (still attached to the bone). I'm not a very picky eater, and have NEVER thrown away food, especially something that cost me over eight dollars. But this was the time and the place. I have never been to the restaurant but just had there goat and plantain at the taste and it was amazing. I have had goat all over Jamaica and I have to say this was one of the best I have ever tasted, so much so that I am now going to go to the restaurant so I can have a full meal. read more

Have not been to the actual restaurant, but the lunch trunk is a weekly ritual for me. The catfish and jollof rice is excellent! I was very surprised when I bit into a perfectly cooked piece of catfish. Not overcooked, still moist and very well spiced. This week I tried the egusi with pounded yam. A mix of different meats (goat, tripe, fish, etc) in a very flavorful sauce (spinach, egusi seeds, tomatoes)... An obscene amount of food for $10! read more

Vee Vee is a restaurant that seems to have been the prime spot back in it's heyday but struggles to keep pace with the changing restaurant scene. I ordered jollof rice and goat which was tasty but the order took a while and the rice for several of the orders at my table were incorrect. Nonetheless, my food was very tasty and I would definitely order maybe carry out for next time. We also asked for pastries and got beef patties from a frozen box that were warmed up. I had eaten VeeVee's jerk chicken at the Taste of Chicago and it was great. So I was eager to check out the restaurant experience where I wouldnt be eating standing up in a moving crowd. I went on a Sunday. They had a "buffet" set up. Nothing was labled. Somethings I couldnt identify. What I thought was goat meat wasnt that great. The Jerk Chicken was hard to identify and the seasoning was Wayyy Off what I had tasted before. It had to have been a different cook. All the food tasted like it had been sitting around for hours. The Exact Opposite of what I was looking for. The food was in catering dishes with plastic cover. I dont know why I didnt run out right then and there!? The decor was Ok. There was no one in there but me for a while. Thats always a bad sign. The clerk was pleasant. And I served myself so I dont know what there was to tip about. Also No alcohol. Great. It was a huge disappointment. Its highly doubtful I'll Ever return. The best thing that came of it is I discovered Moodys Pub down the street with a wonderful outdoor beer garden. I was anticipating a new flavor experience when I ordered at Vee Vee's booth at The Taste of Chicago this sumer. Plantains get me every time so I ordered the Goat Stew and Plantains. The plaintains were simply delicious. The goat stew had goat bones and goat gristle but no goat meat. I tell you, the sauce in the no goat meat stew was fantastic (a new flavor experience!) but the lack of meat only compounded my frustration as I realized that most of the stew was inedible. read more

We go for the Sunday buffet. It is a very casual, friendly place where you walk in and grab a plate and start eating, even though there is no one around to greet you. It is a good mix of food that you normally wouldn't find anywhere else. We always get plenty of good eats and you can't beat it for $10. read more

sigh... Why cant i find good jerk chicken in the Edgewater or Rogers Park neighborhood? Why do i have to go all the way to Howard street to get some good jerk chicken? This was better than some i had tried (and that's not saying much); it was slightly below average at best. There was way too much pepper in it; at times my palate was drowning in a pepper like ambiance. They also gave me a load of rice and peas, but it wasn't very attractive in terms of presentation. It was sloppy and looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. It tasted okay, but because of the way it looked, i ultimately lost my appetite for it. This place was pretty awful. Went with a Nigerian friend to try it out. Food had been sitting out since the morning. It was cold as hell. We got there at 3:00 as soon as the opened up and a lot of the food in the trays were gone. We got water glasses that had lip prints on them. Such a turn off. No one was in there. Clear sign. Couldn't tell what we were eating because there were no labels on the food. Like who does that at a buffet? It's literally like they just brought pans from home that they picked over put it on the table and put heat things under the pan to keep it idk because they food was not warm. I only ate the Jollof rice. That was pretty good. Would've been better warmed up . Nothing was fresh. When we asked when the new food was coming or when will they replenish they said "you just got here"... umm what the heck does that have to do with ur food being old dried out and cold on this table?.. it was 5 of us and we decided to change tables. I was a frequent customer having lived in Edgewater (Chicago neighborhood near Vee-Vee's). At first the food was really good. My boyfriend (a meat eater) and I went often. It was one of the few places we could both eat (I'm a vegan). There were only two dishes I could eat. My preference being the egusi soup with a side of coconut rice. Overtime the food began to taste different which is due to the constant change in cooks. The original Nigerian chef was amazing. i wish she was still there. Nonetheless my last two/three visits (over a two year period) have been pretty bad. My last visit was the straw that broke the camels back. The egusi did not taste right and the coconut rice (which costs extra) did not taste like it actually had coconut milk. It tasted liked regular white rice. To add insult to injury Chief (owner) charged me extra for the meatless equsi (originally $11, now $12, but charged $14) siting that it was a special order which is ironic because a) every dish is made to order - that's why it takes an hour to get your food - even if you call in they don't begin preparing your food until you arrive), b) there was no meat which on a per cost basis is less expensive for them to make. His (Chief's) response was next time order it with meat. Insensitive and down right trifling. I'm still baffled that he charged me more and did not tell me until the bill arrived versus telling me when I placed the order. I should be able to decide wether I want to pay more before the order is made. Prior to this visit I went a year without visiting because my equsi had so much pepper that it was inedible. All in all it's just not worth going to eat there. It takes forever to get your food. The prices are changed at the owners discretion and the flavor of the food is inconsistent (taste has gone down the drain over the past few years). read more

We had the goat meat in tomato sauce and plantains. OMG! So tender and so tasty. We were a little amazed because we never had goat meat before. Had a great favor and wasn't spicy. We hope to dine in sometime soon. Menu looks very interesting and one would need to have an open mind when eating the food. I also love that this place is not expensive. read more

I love this place!! They have something called Pepper Soup and anytime I even remotely think I'm coming down with a cold, I make atrip to Vee-Vee's for the Pepper Soup. Knocks it right out within hours. I like everything on the menu. read more

This is by far the worst restaurant I have been to and I eat out often. As a seasoned food lover from West Africa, this is by far the worst jollof rice i have ever ever eaten. My bf found a piece of bristle from their scrub brush in his okro soup. Everything we ordered was bland and tasteless (only a small hint of habanero pepper...no salt or seasoning to taste). Not only did I have to wait a long time (which I didn't mind), but it was not worth the unpalatable food we got. I was violently ill with diarrhea the next day even though I only ate a few spoons of the jollof. I would give them zero stars if I could. The only positive was the plantain, it was soft and sweet like it should be. read more
