So, 4 stars for the food because just because it doesn't suit me, doesn't mean it won't suit you. Food, wine and bartender were gorgeous. Zero complaints about that. The rest, not really a complaint, but man did I feel ridiculously out of place in this joint, and I love me some JP. Still, this is the part of JP that's on the "I have a fancy job and can afford to own a house, but need to keep my children in an ethnically and socially diverse neighborhood with an organic grocery and lots of places for yoga with tots" side. It was expensive, super chi-chi, coupley and I felt like everyone was staring at us if we laughed a little too loud. Admittedly we got pretty drunk, and were moderately obnoxious, but if the table wasn't one foot away from EVERY OTHER TABLE in the restaurant, no one would have noticed. Plus, for $65 bucks a pop... I'd like to be able to be loud and obnoxious. Alas, just because I felt weird and uncomfortable, doesn't mean you will... but if you love Foley's Fireside, Tacos El Charro or being loud and obnoxious... this may not be your place. read more

As I was hunting Yelp for the perfect date spot in Jamaica Plain, I came across Vee Vee. I was a little daunted by the price of things, but decided to give it a whirl. First off, I don't understand how there are any negative reviews here. This place is amazing. Seriously, it's delicious. Beer and drink: their selection is huge! I opted for a Peeper Ale (Maine Beer Co) and was not, in the least bit, disappointed. If you haven't tried this beer before, it's a little hoppy (which i love) mixed with citrus. Guys, it's great. The only suggestion would be to assure the beer is iced cold, but beggars can't be choosers. I was a little disappointed with the small menu (but, hey, it's a bistro). I ordered the chicken (description: Roasted Giannone chicken breast, fregola, oranges, pistachios, herbs, broccoli rabe - $24.00). Listen, I'm always apprehensive to order food I can make at home. I could easily get some chicken from Whole Foods or whatever and make it delicious. But, this chicken... it was perfect. Perfect. I can't even put to words, it was great. The wait staff was great. The best part was that I did not feel overwhelmed by the server. He came by, asked how the food was, engaged in light conversation, then went his own way. He has a very chill and relaxed vibe (which fits perfectly with Vee Vee). Bottom line: This place is great. Huge selection of beer and wine and the food is out of this world. Never had such a rough time trying to return food we found too greasy. We got fairly expensive dishes, a good wine, and our first serving was what they call a "bite", a $5 order of mushrooms. Greasy. Terrible. We asked to return and and replace it with (much more expensive) soup, and then received a long, tiresome list of questions on why we wanted to return it and what was wrong with it. Seriously? To add insult to injury, we both suffered food poisoning, which, although we can't prove was the result of their food, can't be from anything else. Eat at your own risk. read more

Came to VeeVee on a friends suggestion this past Sunday for brunch. I called ahead for confirmation that they had vegan dishes or could make any current brunch dishes that they had vegan. Horray! They could! In fact when I arrived, to my surprise and enjoyment, they had a sign in the window "Vegan Wednesdays three course meal for 25$" !!! My friend arrived before I did and put her name in for a table for two. We waited for ten minutes and then were seated. The waitress was friendly and quick. I ordered the Huevos Maria, and a side of homefries. Everything was delicious! The Huevos Maria was a take on Huevos Ranchero and was very tasty. It came with fried tortilla chips, tofu egg style, salsa verde, a brown sauce and avocados. I cleared my plate, although I wish the portion was a bit bigger for being 10$. Vee Vee is a great concept, but is poorly executed and disorganized. It's simply not worth the wait or disappointment in its current form. Despite the many negative reviews we had read regarding Vee Vee's poor service, we decided to give them a try, hoping that the food quality that some reviewers described would make up for the apparent lack of attention to dining experience. They ended up "losing" our order, according to the server, and when it finally came out an hour later it was cold and bland. If a restaurant is going to completely drop the ball on their customers, the least they can do is make sure that the food hasn't been sitting around and is fit to be served. There are many other dining choices around JP that haven't lost their customer focus. You might get lucky and have a good experience at Vee Vee, but the chances aren't good. read more

Been both for brunch and dinner. Nice location and great feel to the place. Charcuterie was great albeit small. Beers selection is awesome. And meals overall have been great, especially huevos Maria and the shnitzel. Service, on the other hand, has been quite disappointing. An hour wait for our orders to arrive, and then they tell us that they have run out of one of the items; this when we were the second table seated at opening. This place just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. From being asked in a kind of snooty way if we had a reservation, to the energy in the space, which got progressively louder as the night went on - they should address the noise level in this type of restaurant. I could barely hear my friend. Nothing on the entree menu jumped out at me - I'm glad they have so many veg options and I'm glad it's affordable but none really spoke to me. I like most everything but there was always something that just seemed off - spiced yogurt? curried peaches? nettles? What are nettles? Maybe I'm being unsophisticated and maybe my palate lacks imagination, but I ended up ordering two appetizers as an entree: the spring minestrone soup and the crispy polenta. They were both delicious. Of course I left wanting more food, and feeling like they were lacking substance, but they did taste good. We opted for the vanilla cheesecake which was certainly pleasant but nothing special. Yes, the don't serve meat (except for fish), and this is explained on their website. I tried something new (nettles) and enjoyed a deliciously light meal and a very pleasant atmosphere! It did feel funny to be dining in the skeleton of my beloved Cha Fahn (RIP), but I was happy to see how the space has been recycled. The waitstaff was very friendly. The place can cater to larger groups, but it's probably best to make a reservation for a party larger than 2 or 3. It's not a big place! I hover my mouse over two stars, then three, then two, then three, then two. I'm having a dilemma not knowing exactly where to click. I'm recalling my meal and DTPs meal and the dessert, but all I can remember is the tastefully date-y atmosphere, tangerine walls, low lighting, and the beaker in which our wine was served. These things I recall aren't so bad, but it created a confusion, a dilusion, and the food ... forgettable. Maybe I made poor choices, but I was really looking forward to all that I ordered. They had these great Maine offerings, shrimpies in risotto, and a rhubarb dessert (like my grampy used to make), but both tastes were off. There wasn't the richness I expected out of a creamy risotto and the rhubarb strawberry apple compote was just a bit bland and the bitterness of the rhubarb ruled. Did I miss something? Are the offerings supposed to be healthy? Well, regardless, I was not pleased and left confused. Points for an interesting selection of beers! Go, Maine, and Cisco! Vee Vee makes neat use of seasonal ingredients and boasts a great beer list (including Pretty Things!). Love the dramatic coral walls and cute art. It was a regular brunch spot for us until they stopped serving on Saturdays. I had the shrimp and grits late last summer when sweet corn was at peak and dreamt about it for the next few months. Then I made the mistake of ordering the dish again in fall when it fell flat without the corn. I also found the much-touted shrimp and scallop cakes disappointingly over-battered. But I love the huevos with beans, chips and salsa verde, and their breakfast sandwich has flair. Although we'd happily brunched at Vee Vee a few times, the menu had never inspired me to return for dinner. I finally went with two friends and the dishes were superb. The smoked whitefish pate came with standout horseradish beets, and the salad with goat cheese and candied walnuts tasted fresh, sweet and peppery. I loved my dijon-crusted pollock and he his fish stew, so for once we didn't have to fight over bites. The vanilla bean panna cotta with macerated raspberries tasted too commercial, exactly like a Haagen-dazs popsicle I used to like. But the blueberry cornmeal shortcake makes for a satisfying, bowl-licking end. read more

I am an advocate of Zon's, and was excited to hear that someone partially responsible for the deliciousness of my food there had opened a new restaurant in JP. I was even more excited when I found out the menu was really into non red meat options but was not awash in vegan food. I am pleased to report that Vee Vee looks pretty and there is a lovely wine menu, with many organic options by the glass. Dessert was also enjoyable. Vee Vee definitely has potential. However. The entrees are just not quite there yet. The concept is lovely, but there was something lacking--be it the texture of the squash in one dish or the lack of ingredients standing out and overall mediocrity of the linguine. I really want to like Vee Vee and recommend trying it because I think these things will be worked out as the menu is fine-tuned. At the very least, come for delicious desserts, wine, and wonderful bread. read more

My boyfriend and I were having a date night a few weeks ago, to celebrate the close of the summer and the warmer weather. We live in Cambridge, so making it all the way to JP is a bit of a stretch without a car. But for Vee Vee, we gladly spend the time on the T. We showed up early on a Friday night, and made ourselves comfortable at the bar. The bartender was sweet and incredibly helpful. We ordered two of the special drinks they had at the time - again, this was the end of the summer, but they had a delicious rose and a wonderful ale (both local!) that we really enjoyed. Props to the bartender for great recommendations. For my appetizer, I ordered the $1 oysters (which, I'm sad to say, were only a summer thing - they've been discontinued). My boyfriend got the shrimp and scallop cakes, and we split their delicious and refreshing gazpacho. The boyfriend was still hungry, so he ordered a brilliantly cooked steak with this amazing sauce and a roasted sweet potato - which he also kindly shared with me. We couldn't have been more thrilled with our appetizers and entree. We continued on to dessert, where we had the raspberry-peach crisp, and we were in heaven. It was obviously freshly made (no frozen lame desserts here!) and was the perfect end to the meal. We we thrilled with the whole experience. Went to VeeVee for the first time on Friday evening. I am a foodie but I found the menu very odd. It's kind of expensive, portions are small and tofu seems to be the only option on the menu for non-meat options. The menu, in general, is sparse. I had to really try to find something to order. The worst part is that so many items are deep fat fried. The potato cakes were like eating greasy 'Tater Tots. A lot of the flavor can be lost in veggie items that are heavy, breaded and fried - kinda yucky. The panna cotta for dessert was interesting but was barely set. It's difficult to make a good panna cotta and to get the balance of the gelatin correct. It just wasn't right, somehow. I would not have gone to this restaurant if the others in my party hadn't selected it. I am just not sure what the chef if trying to do with the menu. I went away both wanting a burger and sort of not feeling well after all of the fried food. read more

I'm not totally sold on Vee Vee for dinner yet (the execution seems to vary from dish to dish and visit to visit), but I finally got a chance to try Vee Vee for brunch, and it is completely full of win. Shrimp and scallop cakes, lobster sausage, sweet potato hash, frittata, it's all pretty much fantastic. Definitely not your normal boring brunch menu; you'll want to sample a forkful from everyone else's dish at your table.And there's lots of sharable sides too (like a pair of biscuits or a crock of grits). This and Masa are probably the two most unique brunch menus in town. So give Center St Cafe or Dogwood Cafe a break for brunch, and give Vee Vee a go for JP Brunch Action. read more

I've been eating at VeeVee since two weeks after it opened and have probably eaten dinner there 5 times. They have made excellent progress from the day they started as I would have rated it maybe 2 stars at opening, but they have their act together now and it is a solid dinner spot with dependable foods at reasonable prices. While it does not rate as high as Ten Tables which is the gold standard in JP, and frankly that is a high standard to meet I would put VeeVee on my regular rotation. They consistently find inventive and interesting dishes made from solid ingredients. The menu changes frequently so it is probably hard to review any specific dish they have and know that it will remain timely, but their fish/seafood dishes are excellent (though I wish they would add the skate back to the menu), good veggie options for those not eating meat or looking for a break, their beet salad and other starters are solid and for desert, even as old skool as it sounds, the butterscotch pudding is great. Atmosphere is mellow warm tones that are especially comforting in the winter and make you feel at home. The wine list is small but has good bottles on it and prices are fine. The music is amazing (IMHO) as the owners are true music fiends and you never know what mix of tracks you'll get on a given night. Could be Depeche Mode throw back or The National and the Decemberists. Long story short, I like it, I'll keep going, give it a shot and see if it is for you. Would rate it the 2nd best restaurant in JP. Oh, and the owners are always there and extraordinarily nice. read more

So glad I found this little gem. I don't go to JP often but I'm definitely going to go more now! The atmosphere is really quaint and cute. I liked that it was quiet and small so I could have a conversation without yelling :) Wish I could have tried everything but I got the Potato Gorditas which happened to be the vegan selection. This was filling, delicious, healthy, and awesome! We also tried the mushrooms and the croquettes for an ap and wow wow wow yum. We've been here probably 6 or 7 times so far, for drinks and apps, dinners, and brunch. I'm a huge fan of this place, and really happy that they are in walking distance to boot. The menu constantly changes, though you'll always find a dinner dish with cod on it, the preparation and sides change seasonally. And it always works. We have yet to have a dish that fell flat on its face. And that is really saying something because they are putting together some flavor combinations that I have not seen elsewhere. Last night for example I had a smoked whitefish pate with caraway and fennel mustard and horseradish pickled beets. Each of these was executed masterfully. I mean I could have had a plate of any one of those and been happy. Well, a plate of mustard maybe not. But even that was a twist I never tried or frankly saw coming. The Pretty Things Jack D'Or on tap is probably my new favorite beer too. Tasteful beer selection. I have a feeling the wine selection is the same, but honestly I haven't delved into it enough to comment. Overall this is a great casual place where you'll get some great food. The prices are reasonable. The portions are not huge. If you want strap on the feed bag, there are plenty of chains and mediocre places for that. We waited far too long in the cold for this brunch. The waitstaff was lethargic and curt, spending five minutes to arrange the silverware between parties and then leaving the table unattended -- which we could see from outside. Our waiter gave us the minimal acceptable amount of effort despite our seating well after the morning rush. The food was enjoyable. Nice selection of beverages (though no espresso drinks with brunch) and local brews. The biscuit/scone was terrific. The quiche was nice but the accompanying salad was better. I loved this place! I went for anniversary dinner with my partner, and it was fantastic. The atmosphere is nice, they gave us a lovely window seat for the occasion (we had a reservation), and the food was excellent. I can't wait to go back and try the vegan prix fixe! In lurve with my local food scene, and going out to eat again- thanks Vee Vee. Shrimp and Grits. As a JP head it is a ritual to find a new friend in a new restaurant. Call me a yuppy for eating here. I don't give a care! I feel good eating this art! We braved the brunch scene in JP, for a treat from the usual weekend apt. cutie fried egg and dos y dos with various roommates. With a somewhat wait, found a greater tummied-tomorrow at town's new gourmet "American bistro." SHRIMP and GRITS-dining beauts. That is what I am talking about. Be not afraid to eat fish for breakfast., with real dark coffee and a Bloody Mary, nonetheless. I too have seen beyond my brunch fall-back Eggs Benedict. My taste buds desires and vitamin needs have reached homeostasis yet again. The Shrimp and Grits: Old bay, Andouille sausage, Grits, Biscuit, home made butter and jam. New England's coy answer to Jumbalaya, comfortingly flavorful, as opposed to spicy, land and sea meal. Incredible. Great proportions of fresh meat. I am not a big shrimp eater but these shrimp were darling tender. The andouille was delicate and rich like a blood sausage. The grits; cumulous clouds of fluffy wheat and cream. The buttermilk bisquit was lovely and the enticing homemade butter and jam were nice final post-coitus caresses. My breakfast buddy enjoyed the lox. Fresh Smoked salmon, white fish pate, horseradish beats, hard boiled eggs, greens, home made English muffin. Is everything here made in store?? This English muffin has the kind of nooks and crannies that you can rest in. Bloody Mary made with sake. I don't feel strongly about Bloddy Mary's in general, but it's refreshing and strange to drink alcohol stew. Mimosas also available! A festive brunch. The bar also features extensive wine menu, as well as local beers including Pretty Things! Vee is known for it's fish. I like to order fish when I go out since I don't cook it nearly enough. On a dinner note, I also throughly enjoyed Panko and dijon-crusted pollock, white bean puree, potato, leeks, fennel, nicoise, olive tapenade. The fish was fresh and thankfully was the main character in this involved dish. I love the taste, look, and feel of Vee Vee. The walls, beautiful pumpkin colored, minimalist art, exposed wood, high windows overlooking JP trees over traffic. We read the Phoneix and just enjoyed being in each other's space. We took in the comfort and the indie music. We talked with our neighbors, with their beers and babies, and fashionable taste buds. I recommend walking to and from brunch at Vee Vee!! read more

We had an early supper here this past weekend. Party of 3. Sat in the window booth. We started with the Oysters on the half shell with yuzu granita. Out of this world. The granita was a perfect match for the oysters. One of us had the Roasted Giannone chicken breast, another the Seared scallops and the last was the Spice-rubbed club sirloin steak. For the first time ever, we could not decide who got the best dish!! Each was totally unique and perfectly prepared. We will be going back. This is a not to be missed restaurant. read more

We just moved out of Jamaica Plain this past weekend. Looking back, there are only a handful of places we truly miss. Vee Vee is one of them. Absolutely wonderful food. Friendly and dedicated owners and waitstaff. And great beers on a rotating tap. Every (of the MANY) meals we had there was superb. As we drove away from JP with a fully-laden car, my wife and I ended up consoling ourselves by saying things like, "well, we can always drive back into town and have dinner at Vee Vee." RUN TO THIS PLACE!! There is RARELY a time when I got out and LOVE every single thing that I sink my teeth into. This place hits the mark. EVERYTHING was incredible on the food menu and the service was impeccable! The drinks not so much but that wouldn't distract me from coming back one bit. I had the sangria, it was bad, it tastes like bad cold wine. Don't get it. And now onto the best food! We started with the crispy mushrooms. Yes please! I could have eaten the entire bowl plus three other bowls. Perfectly coated and the sauce was good but not necessary because the mushrooms were so good. I tried a bite of the butternust squash and lentil soup and that was also very good. Main courses We each had something drifferent and I tried them all Pollack-perfectly coated, brissel sprouts had great flavor and beautifully presented Scallops-delicious. Perfelctly cooked and seasoned. The puree was deliocus Duck special-huge portion and the cherry port reduction was out of this work Potato somethings-tons of flavors-pop of cabbage, savory potato, and sauce all worked together so well Cous-cous-full of flavor and textures, rarely is there a vegetarian meal this good Additionally, we had a party of 5 and called to make a reservation because we knew it was fairly small. Earliest they had was 7:45pm. I wasn't super excited about this but we decided to take it. At 6:40 they called and let me know the table would be leaving soon so we could get there earlier. Sweet! Solid. Pretty much sums about every experience I've had at Vee Vee. Every time I go I'm always surprised that I don't come here more often. The service is always lovely. Food is pretty tasty (not mind blowing or anything- but still really good). And I always leave satisfied, feeling like I've had a good meal and a great time. Plus, who can say no to buck-a-shuck oysters on Thursday nights? Hell yes, I will be there. The menu changes on a fairly regular basis, so it's hard to pick dishes to recommend. But, including the aforementioned oysters, I've had delicious salads, excellent fried fish cakes of varying sorts, and this chilled corn avocado coconut soup that made me rethink my whole I'm-not-really-a-fan-of-coconut-in-savory-dishes mantra. Cheesy potato croquettes are always welcome in my mouth. And any place that serves blue fish will have a special place in my heart/stomach. So yeah, a solid restaurant with solid food and solid service. That's a lot solid for such a small, neighborhoody joint. read more

The ribs were overly charred for my taste but my companions loved the sauce. We all agreed that the pollock was the best plate on the table. I got the chicken based on yelp reviews. I had originally made reservations down the street at another spot, but a friend mentioned Vee Vee, and I'm thrilled I made the switch. It's tiny but so charming, and the artwork is amusing and conversation-starting. I also really like the teeny bar they have there too. BIG fan of tiny bars in neighborhood spots. In terms of food, I am still wishing I had leftovers. Started with the manchego croquettes as well as butternut squash and lentil soup. The soup was TO DIE FOR. For dinner, my friend got the gorditas and I got the special vegan entree which was a spicy red coconut curry with a medley of root veggies over jasmine rice. Holy crap, the deliciousness. For drinks, we kept it simple. Sangria on tap! Loved that they had local Trillium brews there, which I'd opt for next time, when I am not needing to use my car to drive me home. We went here for Valentine's Day, but I hadn't thought to write a review til now. This place is a gem. We made reservations, and were seated in a lovely spot. Our waitress was terrific -- ready with suggestions, helpful with the wine list. I also love it when you can tell someone likes what they are doing -- which, I would imagine, is not always easy in the restaurant business. My boyfriend and I both fell for the same thing: squash-stuffed enchiladas with jack cheese, black beans, and jasmine rice on the side. The squash was super fresh and perfectly prepared. There was just a little kick to the taste, which added flavor in just the right balance. I can't remember what wine I ordered, but it was recommended by the waitress and was a perfect compliment. My boyfriend got a lovely beer on tap (can't remember: I think it was a lighter ale). We skipped dessert, but we had a lovely time. Just a lovely spot -- for Valentines or any occasion. It reminds of the kind of place you'd expect to be tucked away in Greenwich Village, but without the pretension or pomp. We'll be back, and we've recommended it to several people already. read more

Vee Vee quickly became my favorite restaurant in JP. Why? Amazing food, ample choices for vegetarians, great service, wonderful wine and beer list, and a good atmosphere for casual yet sophisticated dining. We love that they update their menu regularly, giving us ample chances to try something new. You do run the risk of hitting them on the first day of a new menu, of course, which can mean they haven't quite hit their stride on some items--but even on "off" days, they manage to impress. I'm confused by previous reviews mentioning poor service, as our experiences have been nothing but stellar. I once tried to phone in a reservation but had terrible cell reception, and when we finally walked in (no waiting, no problem) the owner asked if we had been the ones who called and confessed she'd felt horrible not knowing who it was. Note to meat n' potatoes folks: I've yet to see red meat on the menu. They skew heavily toward vegetarians, which is a godsend for us, but may not be your cup of tea. read more

This was definitely the best food I have had in a long time. I was kind of cautious and held off trying this place due to the many bad/mediocre reviews and the fact that the food is slightly pricey for my budget, but I finally gave it a try and was very impressed. I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered two appetizers (a soup and a salad) rather than an entree - both were delicious and interesting, in particular the salad was fantastic. I like what they did with the space - it's warm and inviting, chic, yet unpretentious, and the service is very friendly. It's the perfect place for a date, or a special night out with a group of friends. They were also very accommodating to the fact the we are vegan, and were immediately able to inform us which of the dishes could be made vegan. (I guess, sadly, dessert is out for us, though.) The food was well worth the money, and I will definitely be back for more and to try some of their other dishes. read more

Good stuff!!! Wow. This is the best place to get classy vegan versions of your favorite Caribbean meals! We started with these yummy fried mushroom balls with melted mozzarella, and for entrees, my BF had a pseudo vegan Jamaican meal (mangoes, plantains, rice and peas, with tofu), and I ordered a pseudo vegan Spanish meal (black beans, eggplant, and lime sour cream). And let me say: the flavors from each dish made sweet love to our tongues mercilessly. The dessert was the sheet too: coconut cream pie--woooo! 4 stars for conventionality with pizazz. My friend was coming to visit and asked me to take her somewhere beyond the popular 02138-02139-02115 area codes. I recommended Vee Vee because I had one of the best dining experiences in Boston there back in the fall. After a day of applepicking, I stumbled upon Vee Vee. It is in a nondescript part of town, downtown Jamaica Plain. I wish it was more accessible because the likes of Cambridge would frequent this place more often if it was on the red line. Why do I like it? Most places rated will have good food, but I found Vee Vee's owners make this restaurant 5 stars worthy. The couple actually manages the restaurant forefront and they know their customers. It's a positive sign when they have regulars who return again and again to this tiny place. We chatted with our server who we came to know was the wife/owner. Her husband was serving the bar. Their love for good food in an intimate setting clearly showed. The service we had was a bit slow, but the personalization made up for it. The dishes are simultaneously unique and classy. There is an Asian twist to the appetizers (crispy shitake mushrooms) in a new American menu. I ordered the panko-pistachio crusted pollack with perhaps the best butternut squash puree ever. It was the table's favorite. I have since been inspired to replicate the dish. This is perfect for a date night (make reservations!) or a relaxing wine night with good friends. read more

An intimate and private experience with stingy/overpriced and a cool (not in the good way) staff, but an overall mediocre experience. The staff was not accommodating for our party of 10 despite being completely empty when we arrived; they insisted we wait until the barstools cleared out, then stand near the bar. There are a couple vegetarian/vegan options on the menu, but the tofu cakes are inadequately seasoned and the risotto is unimpressive . The wine list is *not* extensive or interesting but there are several types of wine represented; beer list is a bit better. read more

I love this place! Friendly Cozy small wonderful amazing restaurant. Welcoming staff and a small space to have a drink while you wait for your party or your table to get ready. Simple menu, but all was tasty, well cooked, perfectly seasoned and well proportioned. Friendly service. We tried the croquetes, couscous, lamb and chocolate cake, all were wonderful!
