A filling foray into Nigerian fare! We got the Chicken Suya, Beef Efo-Riro, and Beef Taushe. The Chicken Suya was solid pieces of fried chicken. The Efo-Riro was a tasty spinach stew a bit similar to collard greens. The Taushe was a delicious peanut stew. The Fufu was a necessary and great addition to both of the stews. The Zobo and Kunu Aya drinks we also got were both refreshing, with the Kunu Aya having a unique, indescribable flavor. Definitely worth a try! read more

Suya Joint recently increased its menu prices. However, it did not increase the quality of its food or service. I ordered the Suya wings with rice and plantains. The charge for this entree which included 7 wing parts, rice and plantains was $31. I ordered the spicy wings. The difference between the spicy wings and the mild wings was the cook dousing the spicy wings with berre berre powder! On top of that, Suya Joint has a mandatory gratuity regardless if it's 1, 2 or 10 people dining. The service that I received should have resulted with "no" gratuity. Even more, Suya Joint charges you for using your credit card. So, the bad chicken wings dinner that my son and I ordered came out to be $79. Remember, this was a total of 14 wing pieces, horribly seasoned jollof rice and 6 plantain pieces. This will be the very last time that my family and I dine at Suya Joint. The business model that Suya Joint has will not last long. No wonder why only one other table was occupied when I dined there today. The meal and service deserve zero stars. read more

Our party of two came here on a Thursday evening at 7:30 for dinner. We had a reservation, but it didn't seem necessary given there were three other groups there. We were promptly seated at our table and the lively wait staff came by to take our drink and food orders. We got the joint sampler with beef samosas which was awesome. The moi moi was great and reminded me of tamales. The wings and samosas were super flavorful as well. The drinks came out when we got our entrees which seemed a bit late. We got the taushe stew with eba (pounded cassava) which reminded me of a cross between Thai peanut sauce and butter chicken. I got the crispy chicken special and asked for the "fire" spiciness level with the plantains and jollof rice. The chicken had great crisp to it and was spicy, but not uncomfortable (although I eat a lot of spicy food so your mileage may vary). The jollof rice had awesome flavor and the plantains were amazing! Absolutely amazing meal at Suya Joint. Super accessible in Boston. We arrived with city bikes and docked them at the bus station which was less than a 5m walk. The hostess was kind and sat us immediately. The restaurant was quiet with some afrobeat/rnb playing in the back. Good place for a date or meet up to have conversations. Our waitress was SO friendly and gave us amazing recommendations for drinks, apps and entrees. We went with the sampler and the chicken wings and stew was AMAZING. Saucy and crispy. I got the coconut mangotini and it was excellent - mango puree and not the super sweet syrup made it taste excellent. We shared the taushe with farina and he was soooo good. Strong peanut flavor, perfect texture and we were both super full at the end. Gratuity is included (20%) in the bill and the total each after gratuity was about $45. This is HEAVENLY. This sent me to HEAVENNNNN Oh my goodness imagine alll the flavors BUSTING in your mouth like I can't take it! With every bite I just feel like I'm being sent back to being born. For each dish, you get to choose your level of spice. For new timers, get the egusi soup and pounded YAM fufu. This is literally advertized "as seen on tik tok" on the menu which was kinda funny lol. But yes this is the one you see everywhere and it does NOT dissapoint! So fff good I wish I could bathe in the stew. It is NOT spicy at all so don't fear! and even so the pounded Yam diles back the spiciness if anything. I can't really describe what egusi tastes like, its like something completly different on its own. The palm butter stew was super rich and creamy and I got it with goat meat. The goat meat was so tender it just kind of falls apart in my hand! So juicy and so flavorful, only thing was I wished there was more sauce/liquid. Service was also great! We came when it was relatively empty and there was only 1 server. She was very nice but she also had to handle other tables that were much bigger like family size. But none the less she was super friendly and got us what we needed. The place was beautifully decorated and had AC! Super nice environment to just chill and relax. Great date night spot, my boyfriend and I came here last Sunday for an late lunch/early dinner and by the time we left the place was filling up and filling takeout orders. Once seated, someone came by and brought us water and asked if we had any questions about the menu. I was torn between a couple options, but with some guidance, I ended up ordering their Egusi with a pounded yam fufu. We started with some appetizers, the plantains were delicious, but wow, the vegetable samosas were incredible! Those were gone fast. Our food came out shortly after, and I was extremely satisfied with my Egusi. It was very flavorful, and I enjoyed dipping the fufu in it. My favorite Nigerian restaurant! I've eaten here 3 times and always get the fufu and egusi, especially when paired with fried fish. I'm Filipina, and so eating with my hands and the egusi fried fish dish were familiar to me! I also tried the cassava which was good, but I prefer fufu since it has more of a neutral flavor, allowing the stew to shine. If you like meat, then I'd also recommend the designer stew! Overall my experience was really good. My boyfriend took me to try fufu for the first time and I fell in love. Our server was very friendly and combinative. The restaurant was very authentically designed, and had artwork and pieces of African culture to look at. We ordered the Joint sampler but unfortunately only the stew and spicy suya wings came out which were super yummy and we were told moi-moi was unavailable. Not sure why we never received the beef samosas but in replacement of the moi-moi we got sweet fried plantains which were so flavorful. When out entree came out, I realized how happy I was to have tried fufu at this location. It was so tasty and even better than what I expected. We got a cocktail as well, although i could not find the name of it. It was decent but not great. We also got a coke in a plastic bottle which happened to be flat, so that was kind of disappointing. First time trying Nigerian cuisine. Is Suya authentic? I can't be the judge of that but what I can say is that the food was tasty. We had a tough time selecting which dishes to order since we've never had Nigerian cuisine before and didn't know what to expect. We went with a few popular ones: moi moi, egusi stew with chicken and with jollof rice, and taushe vegetarian with fufu. For both stews/curries, we selected the spicy option (you get to pick between three: mild, spicy, fire). We ordered delivery through a third party and the food arrived on time. Moi moi is a bean paste app with red peppers. It has simple favors and was very tasty. The taushe or peanut stew had a strong peanut or in fact a peanut butter taste. It was good but I wouldn't order it again (I can eat a side of it but not the quantity of an entree). The fufu which came with it, we chose pounded yam, was so soft and fluffy. You take a piece, dip into the stew, and pop it in your mouth - yum. Loved it! Now the egusi stew was delicious. Very nice flavor. However, this was definitely fire level spicy. Since we ordered two stews, we could easily tell that one (egusi) was ten times spicier than the taushe. Yikes. But it was so good, we still tried to eat it all, haha. The jollof rice was nice but didn't have much depth. Overall, I'd give Suya a try again so that I can order the other delicacies listed on the menu (and maybe also the egusi, hopefully with a bearable spice level!). Have lived in the Boston area for a long time and always heard good things about the food at Suya. Had it at a catered event once and really loved the black rice - which is why I wanted to try the restaurant. The food was very flavorful and everything tasted fresh. The wings were delicious. The moi moi was a pleasant surprise. The fufu wasn't my favorite. The goat meat could have been more tender but it was still tasty. The sauces that came with the dishes were all great. The spice level even on the spicy options was perfect - on the mild side. The service was all over the place - that's my only critique. There was a new waitress and she was on her own for a while. Everyone was super friendly though. Street parking was easy around 5pm on a Saturday. They do add a 20% gratuity automatically but they give you a heads up. Would definitely go back. Hope they open for lunch soon. Update: Taking off a star from my previous rating. Came on a Sat night in early January. Several people there waiting for pick up orders. Only one staff person there and she looked overwhelmed. Didn't ask us if we wanted to be seated. Eventually we asked and were told there was no table service that night. It was my friend's birthday and it was really disappointing to find out after coming. Nothing written on their website or social media. We ordered online and waited there, next to a table that was never cleared off from the previous guests. Never even got a confirmation that the order was ready. I really wanted to love this place and support a local black business. If you have never had African food then this is a good starter location. As someone who cooks and enjoy Nigerian and Ghanaian food, this was a watered down version of that. However Boston doesn't have that many options for African food so this is one of the 2-5 that are around. We ordered alittle bit of everything jollof rice, meat pies, suya, etc. Food was hot however the flavor was very subpar. The jollof rice was missing so much flavor! I see they have an option to add more "spice" for an extra cost but I wasn't expecting for the base of the rice to have no flavor. Right now they are take out only. I finally gave up on using delivery services and called them direct to pick up and I still didn't get the right order. I love African music, culture, and clothing but never tried the food until today. This place is the bomb.com/amazing. What I didn't like is very small but not important. The pomegranate-tini is watery and gross. Don't get it at all. That is all I didn't like about the place. Now to the good part. The waitress all though shy was the best. She is so modest and yet an asset to the restaurant. The manager, the owner and all the ones who are part of the staff will do their best to make sure your visit is amazing. Now, I'm a little biased because of my affinity for Nigerian food. Hence the 4-stars even though I think this restaurant could use some major work on their service and just plainly stop messing up people's orders. When I'm in Boston I always either eat here or order food from here on Yelp. They mess up my orders more times than they get them right. Lol, I'm not kidding. Now, let's talk about the food, since I've got that off my chest. What can I say? The goat meat or fish pepper-soups and the nkwobi (spicy cow feet) are my favorite. But why stop there? The okro soup and pounded yam, the jollof rice and plantains, the beef and chicken suya, the moi-moi.... I could go on and on. They are usually delicious. The "usually" is because every now and then, one of these dishes are served too oily and I'm not a fan of oily. Nonetheless, I go back for the food! If you're in Massachusetts, close enough to Roxbury, and would like to try Nigerian food, here's my tip for you. Food was awesome - ordered fish in a spicy stew with side of yam. Asked for fiery spice and it was just right.
