V+B are a meal delivery service in the DC area, but they also deliver to College Park (where we live currently). We spent about a month going back and forth deciding if we'd actually try it, we looked into other meal services... and no other came close to V+B for quality/freshness. They separate themselves from the pack by delivering every 2 days to ensure freshness (because that 5th day meal would be soggy and gross, hello). I've been using them for a while now, and they are great it you are trying to eat more veg and slim down. There's a lot of joy in knowing that you don't have to think about a few of the weekly meals. I get breakfast and lunch so that I have sometime to take to work to avoid going down to M Street in Georgetown too often. I have a meatless subscription. Without even trying I've lost close to 10 pounds since joining, probably because the meals are heavier on veggies and lighter on grains. Sweetness is added with raisins and other fruit, and someone is a genius with the dressings and sauces. My only beef (pun!) is that occasionally a meal just isn't as tasty as others. There's no way to give feedback on individual meals (or at least I didn't see one). I'd like to be able check a box not to see something again, and not have to remember in the future that I didn't like it. But I like 90% of the meals, and when one was too spicy I was able to fairly easily turn it into a milder soup by adding hot water on the stove and then toning down the heat with yogurt and oat milk. We had just had a baby and needed some healthy food, that we didn't have to prepare. This seemed like an excellent option and we found that just getting lunch and dinner 4 times a week was great value for money (only around $100). My husband doesn't eat red meat so they are able to sub chicken for his meals which is great. At the start we had a lot of small issues with incorrect orders and confusion with the red meat thing, but to their credit and our patience, they worked really hard to get it right and now it's perfect every week. I wanted to give them a chance as they seem like an excellent company and the food is AMAZING. I have seen negative reviews with some similar complaints and I would just say, if you can be a bit patient, they will get it right. I know we are very spoilt with perfect ordering on Amazon etc, this seems like a smallish business finding it feet. The variety is great, the meals are filling and healthy. We have really enjoyed our weekly V+B subscriptions. They hit nearly all points that a healthy, socially and environmentally responsible eater would want. And their customer service is terrific! The pros: - Healthy (gluten free, paleo, high fiber, high protein) - Nutritionally balanced - Vegan option available - Extremely sustainable packaging (compostable and recyclable; meals are delivered in reusable bags that they pick up weekly) - Terrific customer service - Ability to customize meals on a weekly basis - Meals change seasonally (for variety and sustainability) The cons: - Some meals are a bit bland - If you enjoy dairy in your meals, there is not dairy available On the whole, this is the delivery service that optimizes for health, sustainability, taste, and price the best across all options I've encountered in DC and New York. The lack of fifth star is simply that maybe 1 out of 5 meals miss the mark on taste, but their healthy and balanced nature still makes them worthwhile to eat. The meals here are typically great, especially the vegan ones. However, I've noticed a decline in customer service, quality, and overall support. I've been using this subscription service on and off for about a year. Their breakfasts are always very filling and delicious. There are some lunches and some dinners that I like less than others but overall I've enjoyed my meals. I also really love support a local meal delivery service. My issues have started over the last few months. First, there was an issue with drivers one morning which had them delivering the food much later than normal, after I had already gone to work (instead of the usual 4am). Long story short, I never actually ended up receiving my food. The following week there was another issue in which although I always order the vegan meals, I received meat instead. Very frustrating especially since it was red meat and I don't eat red meat at all. Then, the following week I received a tiny portion of food with moldy ingredients on it. In addition to receiving a meal that was completely different than what was on the menu and basically the same exact thing they'd already sent me (with less ingredients). One of the most frustrating things about this service, however, has to be the frequency in updating the menus on the website. On a Sunday, the website is currently showing the week before last under "This Week's Menu" and last week's meals under "Next Week's Menu". Nothing at all for this week. This is an issue considering you are billed in full on Saturday mornings for the upcoming week and at this stage you would have no clue what you're receiving and unable to choose whether you want to receive breakfast, lunch, or dinner (I choose which I want and the number of days I want based on the menu). Considering it costs almost $200 for a week of food, that's an issue. As much as I overall like and support this company as a small, local brand, these issues and declining quality have prevented me from requesting future deliveries right now. My boyfriend and I gained a few covid pounds and wanted to shake them, but found tracking our calories SUPER hard when you're cooking for yourself. We weren't making progress and we were spending lots of our free time cooking. Vegetable and butcher gives you the exact calorie count and nutrition info on each meal, they deliver 3x a week so you're never eating 4 day old meals, and their meals are the perfect combo of JUST filling enough that you don't need to eat more but not so filling you feel bloated and gross. No, it's not like eating out every night, nor is it as satisfying as the fried chicken sandwiches we order on the weekends, but it's the perfect thing to keep you healthy and full during the week without wasting all your time cooking. The meals taste good (not AMAZING) but really good, I'm always happy to eat them. I will say the breakfast options and add ons look like a low return on your money, but we do lunch and dinner 4x a week and it's perfect. I have been getting V+B meals now for a few weeks and am a convert! 1. I am not a vegetable lover, but I want to eat more because I know they are important and healthy. The vegetarian really knows how to prepare tasty vegetables for a non-vegetable lover. They are so flavorful. Right now I'm eating the Souvlaki. The roasted asparagus is amazing. It has roasted cherry tomatoes that I am loving, and she mixed in a mixture of rice (but not too much) with healthy seeds and an amazing sauce. One dish had cauliflower rice. I was dreading eating it because another service I was getting (Territory Foods) has the same, and it was just inedible to me. When you bite into "rice," your mind and taste buds expect rice. It was just boring, bland cauliflower (I never get it anymore after trying a couple). V+B's cauliflower rice was a whole other animal. Very flavorful. 2. I'm a meat lover. The meat portions rarely disappoint me. The beef in the souvlaki right now that I am eating melts in my mouth and has tons of flavor with the sauce. I have only had one dish that had "too chewy" of beef, but all the others have been fantastic (pork, lamb, chicken, and most of the beef). 3. You cannot satisfy everyone's tastes 100%. Out of approximately 24 meals so far, only two were bland. Only one beef dish was too gristly/chewy. Those are great track records. 4. One main downside is that you can only order "breakfasts" and you get all breakfasts for that week, or "lunches" or "dinners." So, if there is a dish in the group you don't think you'd like, you can't opt out of it. They need to allow a la carte. I'll continue to get their meals read more

Pretty decent for not having to prepare your own meals and clean up afterwards. I love the composting option they offer too. Meals are generally pretty good and filling. The first time I did V&B, my orders were screwed up a few times. I also did the vegetarian option and there just wasn't enough variety. Every meal was tofu, and I'm pregnant making it challenging to consume so much soy in a week. Fast forward, restarted V&B again, and this time did the butcher box (no pork or shellfish). Pretty decent, but lots of chicken. I'm not much of a meat eater but it would be nice if the meals had a little more variety. Like does every carnivore eat meat for every meal? And I swear there are carrots in everything. Carrots seem to be the filler of choice, I'm guessing because they are dirt cheap. The carrots are usually mixed in with anything that has sweet potatoes in it. I actually like carrots! But I've reached my carrot limit. To end on a more positive note, the bag that the meals come in is great. And love that the deliveries are almost always on time. Wish there were more salads and more variety but I do understand this is a small business. They've been very helpful with our work schedules. Even though we work from home, we're in meetings all day and don't really have time to prepare lunch. Will I use V&B again? Absolutely. I'm so happy I stumbled upon V+B, it has saved me SO much time meal prepping and not having to go to the store for ingredients. My partner and I have extremely busy schedules, long work hours, and travel often. So these meals are perfect to have on the go or waiting for us when we get home. We've tried a variety of services like Freshly and Blue Apron etc. But V+B by far has better ingredients and tastier meals. The only thing is I wish they would do is to add new meals more often. They have a variety that they cycle through but since we're long-term users we definitely notice the same meals every couple of weeks. Vegetable and Butcher has been a life changer for me. I have a severe gluten allergy and this food is honestly incredible. This is the only meal plan service I have been able to find that has the option of meat/poultry/fish (which I need/love), a rotating/varied menu, flexibility in terms of what exactly I want to order, high quality food and taste, not frozen, ready to eat/cooked meals. Recently V+B had a mix up with one of my orders and they have not only made up for the mistake- they have gone above and beyond to offer a personal touch with communication and care. I requested a substitution of additional meals this week to replace some add on snacks I accidentally ordered (my fault) and they offered to refund me for the snacks AND add on my requested meals for free because of the previous miscommunication- I'm still surprised/so thankful for the incredibly generous offer and the concern/care they have for their customers. I really appreciate the way they run their business- I understand the two negative reviews because meals can be a stressful situation for all of us but Vegetable and Butcher care about their customers and making things right. I have been ordering from V&B for almost three weeks and have been very impressed with the quality of the food and the thought that has gone into the preparation of each meal. The food is absolutely delicious, very fresh, and the customer service very good as well. Sodium levels are generally quite low as they do not use excess salt to preserve freshness. But flavor is not missing as the meals are beautifully seasoned in pleasant ways. They have always delivered on time, their packaging is attractive and shows the personal touch they bring to their business. Also, you do not have to spend time recycling delivery cartons and ice packs, as food is delivered in an insulated bag, and picked up with the next delivery. Containers are compostable, which they will do for you for a modest fee of $2.50/week. I do need to watch calories and their nutritional descriptions have been helpful. However, their website is not always current with the nutritional information, something I am told they are working on. Their website is attractively designed and fairly easy to use, although not always very intuitive. V&B is a small local company striving to bring excellence to their work. While there is some improvement to be made on the technical end, I rate them five stars for the quality of their food and their determination to improve as needed. Definitely worth a try! read more

After the fourth time of missing deliveries, I requested that a supervisor contact me since apparently they don't have a phone # where someone answers during normal business hours. The service and food have been great; I am not vegan but am trying out the vegan plan and it is truly delicious, so many veggies I just wouldn't buy or try by myself.
