This place is a complete rip off. They charged my insurance company $225 to tell me they couldn't treat me there. Avoid this place.

They were unable to give me any prices, they dont have any fee schedule. I asked for an approximate of a regular doctor's consultation. All they said, basically, was bring $60 and we bill you the rest! This should not be even be legal! So, basically they assume I will have whatever money they feel like charging me afterwards and of course if I do not they will send me to collections (typical). So it could be hundreds or thousands of dollars and I will not know until they bill me? I work at a dental office and when patients call we tell them the price for a consultation, the x rays, teeth cleaning, Etc. In that way the patient can freely decide if they can afford and want to go to our office or they prefer to go to a more affordable one for them . The Sentara system sounds very abusive to me. How can they take advantage of a sick patient? So unethical!!!

Answer: I didn't know about it. I drove over, walked in the door, gave my information, and was told to take a seat. I had brought a tablet along with a book I was reading, but ten minutes later I was called in for vitals, which were taken immediately. It was friendly, efficient, and accurate, after which I was asked to wait for the Doctor. In about five minutes, Dr. Barera appeared; interviewed me, examined me, listened and made notes of my laundry list of symptom complaints related to a possible sinus infection. I briefly outlined my long history of upper respiratory tract issues from my Service days before she was writing me a same-day prescription, and I walked out of the clinic in 35 MINUTES!! Your experience may be different, and this was my first visit, BUT I WILL BE RETURNING TO THE PRINCESS ANNE URGENT CARE/NowCare CLINIC from now on, when I need medical care with the expectation that it MIGHT be a longer wait next time, but the care will be the same! Today is Sunday and I am feeling ten times better than I did on Friday, and at the age of 70, that means something.

I normally have no issues being seen at this urgent care. I've been here a handful of times, and…read moreuntil today, the worst thing I could say was that the wait can sometimes be long. Unfortunately, today's experience was completely different and genuinely concerning. I came in early after waking up with numerous cold/flu-like symptoms. At check-in, I explained why I was there. I then completed the paperwork in detail, listing all of my symptoms, the medications I was currently taking and for how long, including an existing cough medication, and that I had recently completed an antibiotic for a respiratory infection. When the nurse brought me back, I handed her that paperwork. She then asked me again what was going on, so I verbally explained my symptoms again. She took my vitals, swabbed me for flu, COVID and strep, and told me the provider would be in after the results. My completed paperwork was left sitting on the counter in the exam room. The nurse practitioner came in, put his hands in his pockets, leaned against the counter and asked, "how can we help you today?" At this point, I was already physically uncomfortable and dealing with a painful throat, so I told him that I had just written everything on the paperwork and had also explained everything to the nurse, and asked him to please refer to it. He made a remark about how he guesses he could read but he would normally just tell the doctor what I tell him. He left and later returned and told me he could give me medication for my cough and sore throat. I told him, "Those aren't all of my symptoms. Did you read the paperwork?" He said he had read the chart and it said "sore throat and cough." I explained AGAIN that those were not all the symptoms I had reported and pointed out that my completed paperwork was literally sitting behind him. I asked him to please read it. From there, the recommendations began coming piecemeal. Body aches? Motrin. I then had to prompt him about the hot/cold sensations, phlegm and my other symptoms. Then he suggested allergy medication. This was exactly the problem: I should not have had to repeatedly prompt a medical provider, symptom by symptom, to consider information I had already provided in writing and verbally. I asked to speak with the doctor. He responded, "I am the doctor." I clarified that I wanted to speak with another provider/physician. He left the room, returned, and told me that the doctor refused to see me. That was unacceptable to me. I explained that I did not feel my symptoms were being taken seriously because recommendations were being made piecemeal without anyone appearing to review my complete presentation. More importantly, my medical history mattered here: I have asthma and am currently recovering from vocal cord surgery. Yet instead of reading the information I had already taken the time to provide, I was being made to repeatedly talk through the same symptoms despite having throat pain and recovering from surgery involving my voice. I finally asked for the clinical manager. That is when the quality of care changed completely. The clinical manager, Erica (I believe), actually read my paperwork, listened to me, reviewed the notes in the system and considered my medications and medical history together. She noticed that I was already taking cough medicine and specifically instructed me to discontinue it in favor of the newly prescribed medication, explaining why. She also noticed my documented allergy/sensitivity and made sure the lidocaine being prescribed would not be flavored in a way that could cause me a problem. In other words, she did exactly what I had been asking for: she looked at the entire clinical picture instead of treating individual symptoms in isolation. She apologized for my experience, including my interaction with the nurse practitioner and the fact that the other physician declined to see me. I ultimately left with multiple medications and, more importantly, an understanding of what I should take, what I should STOP taking, and why. I appreciate Erica tremendously because she salvaged an otherwise terrible experience. But her competence also highlighted the problem: the information necessary to appropriately evaluate me was there the entire time. It was on the paperwork I completed, in the history I provided, and in the medications I documented. I should not have had to repeatedly advocate for someone to simply read it. Patients complete medical histories and medication lists for a reason. Particularly when a patient has asthma, has recently been treated for a respiratory infection, is recovering from vocal cord surgery, and is presenting with new respiratory/flu-like symptoms, reviewing that information before recommending medications should be basic patient care. I hope management addresses this, because a patient should not have to escalate to the clinical manager just to feel that their complete symptoms and medical history have actually been reviewed.
