The owner, a young man who was working the counter, was incredibly upbeat and friendly. He let us sample as many flavors as we wanted and seemed genuinely thrilled that we liked them! The coffee was rich, bitter, and authentic--a sharp, energetic wake-up call compared to the watered-down stuff you get at big chains like Starbucks. They even served it with two cute "Ciao" cookies! The vibe is awesome, too. From the funny Angelato mascot in the trench coat to the board games on the tables, you can tell the brothers who own this place put their souls into it. This decadent frozen dessert creamery located on Ventura Blvd between Van Nuys Blvd and Cedros Avenue (but very much closer to Van Nuys Blvd) in Sherman Oaks is new to me, but not to the neighborhood since it's opening in late 2024. Formerly Pardis, a similar concept with a variety of gelato style flavors. Velvet takes it to a more elevated level with a great mix of assorted goodness, but also several dairy free flavors for lactose intolerant, plant-based and slightly healthier option. These options also include milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cookies, cookie cookies, hot chocolate, pints, scopes and more! All are available in vegan form I had a scope of the Peanut Butter Chip and it was an instant win! The physics menu inside isn't as easy to navigate as all the flavor options aren't played out but all the types of offerings are as well as sizes. The case where all the magic is and happens however very much has all their good variety. Don't forget some toppings and to put some change in your metered street parking (mostlywhats available here on Ventura/Van Nuys Blvds). Cool places to sit and hang, free Wi-Fi and lots of great lighting from the window. The girl who rang me up was nothing but helpful with extra sprinkles of kindness. I was craving sumn sweet, but my partner is not eating dairy right now so that's makes it a little tougher for fining good places. We were delighted by the selection, even at the end of the night they had around 6 vegan flavors available and they were delicious! After a hot and sunny day we were looking for something refreshing and decided to go to this ice cream shop. We've visited a few times before and it NEVER disappoints! Our go to favorite is the strawberry ice cream, the strawberries taste so fresh I've never had ice cream like that before. They have a great assortment of flavors to choose from; we opted for a single peanut butter cup & a double raspberry cheesecake. The former was vegan & nothing gave away the fact this was non-dairy. Our order was wrong but we didn't notice until after we paid. Gave the wrong size. I feel it is a little overpriced but glad we tried it. I came during a quieter time on Saturday evening and was able to sample a couple of the vegan flavors before choosing which ones to include in a vegan brownie sundae. First time here and I can say for sure I will be coming back. The interior is spacious, modern, and clean. Service was super friendly. They do allow you to try out as many flavors as you'd like without pressuring you or rushing you. However, if there's a large party and only 1 staff working, be prepared to stand in line for a while. There's plenty of seating inside for you to enjoy your treat. They also sell ice cream by the pints. Treated myself to 3 flavors during this run ... 1. Baklava (5/5) I am usually not a baklava person as I find it to be too sticky and sweet. But the staff highly recommended that I at least try it and judge for myself their Baklava ice cream. I am so glad I did, because WOW, what an amazing combo of velvety creaminess paired with actual pieces of baklava. The baklava pieces added crunch and that honey sweetness. I think this will be the only time I will eat "baklava." It's still on the sweeter side for my preference, but definitely, enjoyable without feeling like I'm going into a diabetes coma. 2. Pistachio (5/5) One of their most popular flavors and with good reason. It's super smooth, subtly sweet, soul-comforting and the real pistachios they add inside were fresh, nutty and just bursting with that pistachio flavor. I really appreciate that they do not use artificial pistachio syrup or flavoring, but instead, rely on the actual pistachio nut itself to bring out the pistachio flavor. A+ 3. Dubai chocolate (4.5/5): Another one of their popular flavors. This one tasted milky, yet a bit tart with bits of chocolate pieces throughout. I personally wished the chocolate was more rich, but overall, still very enjoyable. They do have toppings you can add to the ice cream (see attached photos), but I opted not to as I prefer to enjoy the original ice cream flavor without complicating it with additional flavors. The good Service was friendly, standard dessert etiquette was experienced (tastings, info on flavors, etc. ), and unfortunately neither of these things are considered in my overall rating because it's a dessert place: I'm not there to hang out for extended periods of time and be checked on by wait staff to feel validated or whatever - I'm wanting a satisfying experience that convinces me I can come back and be floored by depth of flavor design paired with strong evidence of culinary intent (aka a food place that actually cares about their product by understanding their competition and how they can stand apart from them - this place is still in the fetal position). Yes. That was all the "good" stuff. To the point The product is poorly balanced. If you can travel to here, you can travel to a grocery store and get ice, dabble (ya - dabble) some cream into it, sneeze some food coloring, top it with some store bought toppings, and call it a dessert place and name it Velvet.. -oh wait..dang-... The recipes (consistent among the 3 flavors tasted and a 4th flavor I purchased without tasting) are not balanced at all. You can taste how dilute they are (yes again all of them had this...rather lacked this depth) and it's more obvious if you put it in the freezer (no you cannot argue it's the type of product that specifically behaves that way: different dessert places in opposite directions on the same street as Velvet that serve the same product do not have this short coming [again over multiple visits]). The taste of ice is a lingering tell of a "business decision" and not evidence of paying attention to what some of us (customers) will want on a shitty hot day in the summer So if you like this product, more power to you (but really to them cus they're making a higher profit off of water on you). If you're skeptical, I clearly wouldn't recommend this spot in any capacity. My husband and I ended up here unexpectedly while divining home from Sherman Oaks. We noticed the sign and parked right in front and walked in around 8pm and let me tell you they were pretty busy. A good sign I told myself. Once our turn we got to sample a few flavors and were very surprised how good it was. I chose the strawberry cause I wasn't looking for anything too sweet and this just hit the spot. My husband got a Sunday with pistachio and chocolate flavors. He loved it and said it's one of the best he had in a while. Spacious space with seating and games on tables. A fun place to hang out with family and friends. Friendly customer service. The gelato tastes amazing and they have many flavors to choose from. We will definitely add this place to our favorites. The only thing I suggest is for the management not to use the heavy smelling floor cleaner ( I believe it's something like fabuloso) when you walk in that smell just hits your nose and it's not pleasant.
