Sweet Butter is, without question, my favorite place in Los Angeles. If Nora Ephron were still with us, I am convinced this would be her world. It feels like the setting of a perfect romantic comedy, the kind of place where people accidentally fall in love over coffee, old friends reconnect, and writers fill notebooks on sunny afternoons. The moment you walk through the garden gates, the city seems to disappear. The outdoor patio is beautiful year-round, with twinkling lights, mature trees, and an atmosphere that feels both elegant and completely relaxed. The food is consistently fresh and delicious, the bakery case is impossible to resist, and the market is filled with thoughtful finds that make every visit feel special. Whether you're meeting friends for brunch, having a business meeting, or simply enjoying a quiet morning, Sweet Butter has a way of making ordinary moments feel memorable. And if you are an east coast transplant like me, you will see a lot of friends here. What I love most is that it has heart. It's charming without trying too hard, stylish without being trendy, and welcoming to everyone who walks through the door. The owner dresses the place up every season and holiday and has a collection of amazing gifts to purchase from books to chotkes. It's a magical place and the entire menu is literally all good. It's a can't miss. It does have a rush lunch crowd from about noon to 230 pm so plan ahead for street parking as they don't take reservations. They do move food pretty quickly however. Personal faves: Kale salad, Cobb salad, any breakfast items and anything from the pastry cabinet. Fresh towering birthday style cakes. Amazing drink selection. I was in the neighborhood and I decided to get my 3pm tea break there. The place itself looks pretty nice. They have a cute outdoor patio and also a semi open indoor patio (it's the best way I can describe it). You have to order your food inside the cafe but you cannot sit in there, it's too small and they do not have tables. I did not order food so I cannot give an opinion about it. I ordered a large English breakfast hot tea with steamed oat milk on the side. Technically it's not a latte but on my receipt it says latte and they charged me $6.50 for it. Then, they added $2 for large. I am guessing for the large cup? For the oat milk I paid an extra $0.95. After tax I ended up paying $10.37 for a bag of tea and some oat milk which is pretty HILARIOUS!!!! The owner must be pretty delusional but also rich! I have never paid such a ridiculous price for a simple tea but maybe they sprinkled it with some gold dust which would justify the exorbitant amount! Anyway I sat outside on the outdoor patio and I realized that the patrons there are special people (or at least that's how they see themselves). The vibe is pretty pretentious but I was just minding my own business and enjoying my peace which got quickly disturbed by two wannabe actors who sat right next to me and started speaking so loud because you know how they like for others to hear about their impressive resume. Overall, we had a good experience. The food was tasty, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The French toast was definitely the highlight of the meal. That said, I don't think it lived up to the hype or the price. Our bill came out to $78, which felt pretty steep for what we ordered. It was good, but nothing that really stood out or made me want to rush back. One thing I didn't understand was the amount of arugula, it was in the sandwich and also served on the side, which felt a bit excessive. Parking is also very limited, but that's pretty typical for Ventura Boulevard, so I can't really hold that against them. Stopped by again as this place is always one of my go tos! Service wasn't quite as impressive as usual, maybe bc it was a weekend morning so they were busy but they were certainly less attentive. We sat down at a pretty dirty table after ordering inside and it took a while for someone to come and clean the table off. It also took a WHILE for our food to come out. It feels like we waited forever! Don't recommend coming if you need a quick meal or have a tight schedule to stick to. My friend got the poached eggs & fine herbes toast. First of all, gorgeous "inside" and overall decor! Nothing but street parking and boy was it busy over the weekend. We walked a few blocks down just for parking. They have a very tiny spot though. You have to go inside to their gift shop/coffee area to order and then they give you a "food name" as your order "number" which is honestly really cute because the hostess just randomly yells out HIBISCUS if you have that name card lol! Food took about 30 minutes for takeout and we enjoyed it at home. My mom liked her omelette and my bf liked his turkey sandwich. Cute cafe in the area, they have a nice indoor dining area (not air conditioned) and also a lot of outdoor seating. Downside is you have to find street parking and for breakfast you'll need to park by the residential streets. Went here for a business meeting on a Monday morning so we probably stayed for over 2 hours. This was my 2nd time here and I swear I thought I wrote a review for this place already. That said for this visit I ordered croque madame. My bosses ordered their usual and I tried the pancake... wow I loved the pancake. Not sure what makes it decadent but I've had many pancakes in different places but this is the best, without any butter or syrup it is very good. And the right texture and thickness for me. As far as the croque madame, the gruyère cheese was sooo creamy and the whole dish is just yummy! The greens break the richness of the sandwich. I've driven by Sweet Butter Kitchen 1,000 times in my many traverses on Ventura Blvd. when I lived here. It was always busy, but never caught my attention. Today meeting with contractors and subcontractors one of these important people needed to outline what I had to do. Instead of standing on a roof, he said let's talk over lunch; meet me at Sweet Butter. And I did! I had a terrific egg salad sandwich with a heaping handful of dressed arugula. They have a pretty extensive selection of items, ranging from pancakes, waffles, eggs, sandwiches, salads and more. The patio is lovely with many tables, but you can also sit in the inside area like my son and I did. We placed our order with Abel who was very kind, approachable, and patient. Molly also helped me on deciding which quiche I wanted since I wanted something eggy and they only served Eggs Benedict on weekends, which is what I was really in the mood for. We sat down and waited for our food which came within 10 minutes. It was around 4pm on a Tuesday and the place was pretty dead, but don't let that fool you. This place gets PACKED and it can be a long wait for a table. I ordered a Decaf Vanilla Latte with Oat Milk ($5.95 and +$0.95 ea for the vanilla syrup and oat milk) and a piece of Cinnamon Bread Pudding ($7.75). For my main entree, I decided on the Italian Tuna Sandwich ($19.50) but subbed Sourdough in place of the Ciabatta. It came with Red Onion, Parsley, White Beans dressed with Our Vinaigrette & just a touch of Mayo with Kalamata Olive Tapenade, Arugula & Roasted Cherry Tomatoes. My son ordered the Grilled Veggie Salad $18.95 +$8.00 for chicken) which came with With Laura Chenel Goat Cheese, Mixed Greens, Asparagus, Corn, Zucchini, Cherry Tomatoes & Avocado with Dijon Vinaigrette and we got a slice of Bacon-Cheddar-Asparagus Quiche to share ($12.95). The quiche came with a side of undressed mixed greens and I opted for shoestring fries with my sandwich. Everything tasted great and we pretty much cleared every crumb off of our plates! The place was clean and so were the bathrooms. Unfortunately they dont have any parking but there are some metered spots around. We were lucky to find some residential parking for 2 hours. Make sure you check the signs. t's been several years since I was last here but it's an enjoyable place to be. Sweet butter is another go to for the valley. They are really known for their bakery items and sweet and savory breakfast fare. When it comes to their baked goods everything is large and dense so be aware of that. Each item is really meant to be eaten alone. Of the items I've had here their croissant is my personal favorite. Nothing else really stood out but again the dense part makes it hearty. As for their breakfast items they have some fancy choices such as one that involves steak, big pancakes, etc. every time I've been here everything has been solid but nothing to rave home about. Been driving by this place for over 10 years, and been wanting to try it out. Today was the day. For first-timers like ourselves, the entrance was a bit confusing. There is a host table, but there is no sign telling customers to go directly to the counter. I hope the pictures help. We arrived at 8:10AM, 10 minutes after opening. There were 4 other tables before us. The service seemed slow. The staff is professional but are not necessarily talkative and warm. No pleasant greeting, take order, drop off order. Ordered mushroom soup (why a cup instead of a bowl???), side of fresh fruit, matcha cloud, and chicken & waffles. Despite the unorthodox vessel (LOL) the mushroom soup had good taste. The fruits, I appreciated were ripe, firm, and fresh. Wife liked the matcha cloud. The chicken & waffles aside from being delivered 15 mins after everything else and only after I asked where it is, only then did they deliver to the table. This means it was ready and sitting around and forgotten by the staff. The wait was not worth it. The chicken lacked flavor/seasoning. Coincidentally it appeared that the owners and their young children arrived 30 mins after us, and got the full attention of the kitchen staff. Sweet Butter is a conundrum to me; one of those neighborhood places with a huge, loyal following of people willing to stand in a long line to order from a slow poke cashier and then jockey for a table to park yourself and wait for your food. Is the place nicely appointed? Yes. Is the staff friendly? Yes. Is this a great dining experience? Despite the foregoing, not so much. The menu is quite extensive, with well over 2 dozen choices for breakfast, and another 2 dozen or so for lunch. You can read through the menu on a large chalkboard or from one of the laminated hand-held menus passed around by people on the line. Also along the line: a wide variety of books and tchotchkes you can purchase on impulse, like a tourist place along the interstate. To the chef's credit, many of the menu selections sound very good, but in my experience the execution has been disappointing. My wife's Pancakes were huge and fluffy and looked great, but didn't have much flavor at all. Scrambled eggs were dry as a bone, like you'd get at Denny's, and the crispy bacon was practically petrified, and pretty much cold. I ordered the Italian Tuna Melt, which was a beautifully composed sandwich and a very ample portion. I applaud them for trying to make a better quality tuna salad, using Italian tuna with cannellini beans, herbs, olives and just a touch of mayo -- but again, the result didn't live up to the promise. The tuna salad really did need more mayo or something to add moisture, as it was just too dry. The cheddar used was very sharp, which tended to overpower the tuna rather than complement it, and the side serving of shoestring fries, though quite ample, was cold. Yes, the decor and indoor/outdoor seating is attractive and comfortable (once you're settled in), and the lively, chatty crowd makes for an upbeat experience. Confused by the low average rating. We had a wonderful experience and dined with friends + a toddler! I really enjoyed the large menu, seasonal specialties and decor. The servers were very nice. When I wanted to add something to the order they informed me I could scan the QR code on the order card, pay and it would be delivered to us. It's Sunday morning, hunger stirring and curiosity guiding my steps, I found myself wandering into this delightful establishment. The atmosphere immediately struck me as charming as there is simply a fantastic vibe here, the sort of place where one feels inclined to linger over coffee and conversation. Speaking of coffee, the cream top coffee I ordered was nothing short of splendid. Rich, indulgent, and perhaps dangerously enjoyable. For my meal, I selected the Mia Breakfast, which I must say was exceedingly good. The pancakes that accompanied it were absolutely phenomenal so much so that I am, even now, still thinking about them with great fondness. Whoever is responsible for those pancakes deserves a firm handshake and my sincere gratitude. We also ordered the French toast for the table. While perfectly serviceable, it was a touch thicker and more well done than my personal preferences might allow. A small critique in an otherwise marvelous morning. I remember coming to Sweet Butter when they first opened up many many years ago. Not sure why it took me so many years to return, but I am so glad that I did! My friend and I had an early lunch today and although it was busy we still were able to order and find a table to sit down and eat. The menu has a great selection for even the pickiest of eaters and also great vegetarian and vegan choices. The food was delicious and very very fresh. I had the Cobb salad without Blue Cheese dressing & decided to try both the homemade ranch dressing and the dijon vinaigrette. They both were amazing but I opted for the vinaigrette. My friend had the vegan sweet potato soup which I sampled and it was delicious! She loved the 1/2 BLT sandwich with a small mixed green salad served on the side. The service was outstanding.
