Love this new taco place at PV and the velvet cake is great!! I've been here a few times now and the service is a hit or a miss. Today was a miss on the communication when ordering the velvet for two $25 deal. The deal is 4 tacos two sides and two drinks. When ordering the dude kept on trying to tell me it's two separate deals when it wasn't and kept on interrupting me when I was giving the 4 tacos portion. He kept on asking for the sides instead. Then he put on a free cake coupon. Which supposedly helps get the deal cuz it was tight before 4PM. When he Bridget the food out I asked if I was getting the free cake since it was on my receipt. We visited Velvet Taco a few days after their opening at this location. It was great to see that they were busy with new customers and we were excited to support them. There was a lot of hustle and bustle with a large amount of staff supporting the orders behind the counter. Counter service was friendly, seating was plentiful (indoor/outdoor), and food came out hot and relatively quick. The only point of feedback that I had with the seating was that it felt a bit cramped with tables near the ordering line. On to the food, we got all three of their veg tacos. The beer-battered cauliflower, fried paneer, and the Nashville hot tofu. These tacos are BIG and packed with a lot which truly justifies the price. The size does make it challenging to eat. The flavors were good, but I found that the tacos, despite having different ingredients, were all very similar with the deep-fried items overpowering everything. I was very excited to see a Velvet Taco was opening at PV. I joined their e-club too early and suffered through nearly a month of constant emails and daily app notifications before the grand opening. Having never been there, I ordered through the app, picked up my order and then ended up eating it on the patio because it was raining. Next time I will order at the counter and evaluate the front of house team. The gal who brought my pickup order to the counter was smiley and efficient. I ordered a Mexi-Cali shrimp bowl, and also got a Grilled salmon taco. If I had more experience with the preparations, I would have ordered a taco with different toppings. Both these dishes had very similar ingredients and flavor profiles to me. Otherwise, yum! The Mexi-cali shrimp bowl was supremely flavored, very enjoyable. I ordered it as normally prepared, which is rice on the bottom, coleslaw and then toppings. I quickly found the coleslaw to be tiresome throughout the dish. In the future will order it on the side, because it detracts from the rice. The blackened shrimp were fantastic, grilled and well seasoned but not too spicy. They were drizzled with Sriracha aoli, and the shrimp were plump and plentiful. In the photo I had already eaten one, but I think 8 shrimp total. I really enjoyed the corn salsa and the guacamole. The rice is a basmati and it is a little dry. But with all these juicy toppings it's fine! The grilled salmon taco is plain by comparison. Similar with corn, slaw and micro greens, but it also has red Fresno chiles. It came in a cute pink plastic box with slots to hold up tacos. The corn tortilla was a disappointment in its soft coldish texture. Griddled would be far better IMHO. The salmon was mildly seasoned and a good sized piece of fish. Will choose a different taco next time. Looking forward to the next Mexi-cali shrimp bowl, though! read more

Velvet Taco Paradise Valley Ordered the Combo - 2 tacos, side and drink. Choose the Shrimp Taco and Chimichurri Steak which both were packed and in a regular size taco, much bigger than a sheet taco. The Chimichurri Taco is grilled steak, basmati rice, chimichurri, avocado, pickled fresnos,queso fresco in a flour tortilla, very good a d filling. The other Taco was the mexi-cali shrimp which had blackened shrimp, Napa slaw, Sriracha aioli, avocado, corn pico, cilantro in a flour tortilla, this was a real winner and recommend. The Quesa Birria is pulled pork, gruyere, queso listo, pickled red onions, cilantro in a corn tortilla with berries consome for dipping, probably the least favorite of the three. There is a soda machine or you can choose by the can or bottle. Queso we could have passed on it. Just was not what I expected. Tacos were large and packed, 2 made me full. Thank you to Velvet Taco Paradise Valley for the invite to their pre-opening event! My dining partner and I enjoyed lunch there today. We were lucky and snagged a parking spot near the little park across the street. We checked in at the door and first met up with the rep from Joy Bus, who discussed their amazing organization. They provide meals for those who have cancer. You could arrange for an optional donation to Joy Bus when you placed your order. The menu was a little confusing because there were some items highlighted in pink and I couldn't figure out why. I asked one of the staff and they advised those are fan favorites. We were each able to order a complimentary bowl or two tacos each, along with a drink. I ordered the grilled shrimp bowl, which is a fan favorite, and my dining partner ordered the brisket bowl. We both had unsweetened iced tea to drink. They have a small dining room as well as a non-smoking patio. We were able to find a table in the dining room. They called out my name and I went to the counter to pick up our bowls. They were both huge and delicious! The guacamole was a bit spicy as was the chipotle ranch sauce on my shrimp. We were able to order the brisket bowl without the red chili aioli, to make it a bit less spicy. The wonderfully friendly and welcoming manager, Sammy, dropped by our table with samples of the red velvet cake. It was out of this world! I will definitely be ordering that every time I visit Velvet Taco! What a fun experience and a wonderful meal! read more

Not bad for a first time visit. The Chicken Tikka masala one was tasty but not sure why they have a mix of dark and white meat chicken. They need to keep it consistent with white meat. The Salmon Taco was just okay and salmon was flavorless, bland and not grilled that well. It seemed rather lightly broiled so that was kind of misleading. It seems like a fusion concept but they need to at least offer few tortilla chips with the taco if we are paying $7 for it. Also, it would be nice to have disposable plates to eat in instead of the stainless ones as people were eating on those and then getting served on them as well so not sure about the hygiene part of it. The associate at the counter didn't seem to have much motivation and when inquiring about tacos she didn't even ask if we would like flour or corn tortillas. It was too late once we got our order. The staff was super friendly and my goodness they were working their tails off at the soft open. It was crazy in there, but they still had staff coming by to help out with recommendations on the menu. My husband and I got the brisket bowl, which was very good. I also enjoyed that they did two free items of either tacos or bowls for free at the soft open; a great way to get people in the door. When I got there, I found out that anything that was purchased above and beyond the two free items was donated to a cancer organization, which I thought was really awesome. The vibe in the restaurant was really cool, they have a giant picture of a woman eating cake and the walls are painted in a deep magenta with chairs a bunch of funky colors. I also really liked that they had outdoor seating and it's right next to the green space at PV mall. Parking was fine just a little bit crowded because of the event which was no big deal. They also were giving up free samples of their infamous red velvet cake, which I thought was really good. The only reason it didn't receive a five was for the event, you had to sign up ahead of time and call in when you were about 15 minutes away if you were doing pick up, which I did however, the phone line never went through and when I got there, it looked like they were just letting anybody in so you still had to wait in line. I went up and ordered my food and I waited for them to call my name for about 40 minutes. The people who ordered their food after me had already sat down and were pretty much done eating by the time I got my food. This didn't seem like a staff problem, It seemed more like an event coordination problem. Our friends in Texas rave about Velvet Taco so we are beyond excited when this PV location opened up. The restaurant's brand and decor are bold and memorable. We ordered 2 of the "Say what?!" combo - I can see they really try to honor the chicken and waffle idea in the taco. Including creation of the waffle pattern on the tortilla but no way to compare the texture. The smash burger one was my boys' favorite. For me, the beer battered cauliflower was the highlight! Cauliflower was just fried so it was nice and hot, perfectly crispy. The heat level and flavors were great with the corn pico. The fish n' chips taco, had a big piece of flakey fish. I understand why they added the fries (the chips) but they didn't add to the taco. The curry aioli overpowered the delicate taste of the fish in my opinion. We also tried their red velvet cake - we got a corner piece so the outside was a tad dry. The cake was not too sweet and balanced nicely with the cream cheese frosting and cajeta drizzle (dulce de leche). While we were not blown away, we want to explore the rest of the menu and I will come back again for the cauliflower taco! read more

We went for the opening event and tried 2 different chicken tacos and the brisket bowl. Everything was delicious. The brisket was so flavorful and the portion was filling. Get a taco combo rather than tacos ala carte. The sides are really good. The new PV staff was very friendly. We sampled the red velvet cake and it was delicious. I wouldn't have expected this quality from a fast casual. I can't wait to return to try other items but it will be tough to pass up the brisket bowl. read more

If I could do negative stars I would. A mom was waiting for a single kids taco for over 45 minutes...come on. That's lack of communication, service, and know how. Not to mention the rest of the people that had tried to be kind but waiting that long when others got their food right away makes no sense. The kitchen needs training and support from management asap. They were working tickets for people that came way after the people that had been there for over a half an hour. Ridiculous.
