Location 5 stars: On Erringer Road in Simi Valley, California, North of Cochran Street, in a larger shopping plaza. Plenty of free parking right in front of the clinic or at the most a short walking distance. Venue 4.5 stars: Large well kept facility with X-ray on site and their own rehab center across the parking lot. You can check online before going or while in the office (just scan the QR code displayed there) and this makes everything faster. Large comfortable wait area. Wait time was less than 10 minutes past my appointment time. Service 5 stars: Friendly and attentive front desk staff, medical staff and physicians.

They had three associates working to get patients checked in or out as the case might be. They were moving through the queue as fast as they could. When my turn came to check in the representative was very friendly and thorough, despite the chaos of so many people in the waiting area. I asked if it is always that busy there. She said that Thursdays are often their busiest days. Dear Hubby explained (he's been a patient there, too) that their doctors rotate to several offices - likely Thousand Oaks and Camarillo, in addition to Simi. Despite the busy load of patients in the waiting room I was called in fairly quickly. Dr. "Siva" came to talk with me and go over MRI results shortly thereafter. There were some surprises in what the MRI revealed which I wasn't expecting. I'll be starting physical therapy soon and we'll see how it all goes. I liked the straight-forward communication style of Dr. Siva. He offered information, compassion, and a plan to move forward.

Unfortunately, after two previous good experiences with Athletic PT, this most recent time isn't going well, and I'm going to be making a change. After Covid, this particular location gave up about half of its previous space, making what remains feel small; even claustrophobic. I don't care for all the patients being almost on top of each other in the back treatment room. Going through physical therapy feels like it should be a private experience, or at least semi-private. At this stage of my life, I don't enjoy being cheek and jowl with other patients. They have also cut the amount of time spent with each patient, which surprised me, and not in a good way. There's also a lot of noise happening - the music is loud, and the therapists and their assistants are making chit-chat talk with each other. It wasn't relaxing to be in that environment. This makes me sound like a crotchety old lady, but I think that a Zen-like environment might be more healing than a Gold's Gym (not to pick on them, per se) kind of work-out shop. When I walked out of the first hands-on appointment I told Dear Hubby that it didn't go very well, and in fact was causing pain in my lower back that I hadn't had when I went in to work on my knee. I spoke with several friends who've been through PT to rehab from surgeries and they urged me to move on if I'm not feeling comfortable. I expect that Athletic PT does good things for many others, but in it's current incarnation, and my current physical state, it's not a good fit for me.

I was evaluated for ongoing, debilitating knee pain that has significantly affected my mobility and…read moredaily functioning. Despite MRI findings that documented clinically significant relevant abnormalities, Dr. Hartman repeatedly described the imaging as "normal" and dismissed my concerns without providing a medically supported rationale. The consultation did not include adequate discussion or review of the imaging or imaging results, potential diagnoses, or an evidence-based treatment plan. When I expressed that I was experiencing 10/10 pain and asked how I was expected to function, Dr. Hartman responded, "Well, I come to work with 10/10. I guess it depends on the person." This comment felt extremely condescending and clinically inappropriate. At no point did he assess how the pain was affecting my ability to walk, work, sleep, or perform basic daily tasks. Instead, he referenced anecdotal stories about his brother and a prior patient, which were neither relevant nor helpful. Dr. Hartman attributed the pain solely to fibromyalgia despite the following issues: * The pain is highly localized to my knees rather than widespread. * It does not resemble my typical fibromyalgia pain. * The MRI report included findings that reasonably correlate with mechanical or structural knee pain. His refusal to acknowledge or meaningfully address these findings resulted in inadequate assessment and left me without a clear diagnosis or appropriate follow-up plan. The care provided did not meet clinical expectations and left me feeling dismissed, invalidated, and unsupported. I have filed a formal grievance with Blue Shield and Ventura Orthopedics.

My initial prescription was wildly inadequate for the level and frequency of pain I go through. I did not appreciate that the specific dosage was not discussed in the office, and I didn't find out the details until a week later, after I first passed their drug test. Once I found out the dosage was only once per day, I immediately messaged his staff that this would be inadequate. They were not receptive to my concern at all, and seemingly would not relay my concern to the doctor. After another month of agony, I spoke with the doctor over the phone. I told him how much medicine, and the frequency, best met my needs, to which he was receptive. This time the doctor prescribed exactly what I needed in order to get back on with my life. Dr. Jiang has proven to be a well educated, reasonable doctor. If you're experiencing as much pain as myself, make sure to discuss the exact dosage in-person with the doctor, as his staff will seemingly not relay him the message if the prescription is inadequate. The length of time I had to continue hurting inclines me to only leave 3 stars, but Dr. Jiang's willingness to work with me earned another star. If you have the resources available, I suggest trying to narrow down the most helpful medicine while waiting to see the doctor, so you can get a suitable script first try. ***Update: 2.5 months in, myself and Dr. Jiang have built enough of a relationship where I believe he's starting to trust me. We agreed on a solution that I thought would work for me. Unfortunately it hasn't met my expectations, but that is of no fault Dr. Jiang's, rather it points to the problems of opioid therapy. The doses that once were perfect, are no longer such. If you have opioid addiction problems, please seek help. It's out there. Dr. Jiang agreed to do our next appointment in 2 weeks rather than 4, which eased my mind, because I knew the dose we agreed to had the possibility of no longer working for me. So I look forward to our correspondence in a couple weeks. Until then I'll hang in there, with a newfound recognition that Dr. Jiang is on my side. Not to mention, the level of pain has gone down considerably since we've met. I think there are just some "kinks" to work out, so I'm not awoken in pain at 2 AM, while still appreciative enough to update Dr. Jiang from 4, to 5-stars.
