I went to Venus since I was a child. What happened? The place looks lost in the 70's, so in an attempt to make it look newer, they redid the booths, which somehow gave them the justification to up the prices ridiculously. I shouldn't even bring up the service. Nothing like feeling unwanted, old lady waitress sighed every time you asked for more napkins or another drink. Great South Shore Bar pizza!! We stop in here every once and a while and usually end up spending a few hours at the bar, eating pizza and drinking beers while watching some horribly awesome '90s movie like "Dumb and Dumber". This place is a hole in the wall to the T. Outside isn't much to write home about and the inside is just the same, one side is solely dedicated to just take out and the other side is split up between the bar and the dining area. The inside is straight out of the '80s, wood paneling, formica tables and bench seats. There's a few TV's around the room and as I said before, there's always something 'classic' on. I picture lots of the customers that come in are hardworking, blue collar dad's looking to sneak away from the family for a couple hours. Back to that amazing pizza... anything that you could ever imagine putting on a pizza is available as well as other stuff like mozzarella stick, french fry, or pickle pizza. I've had plenty of bar pizza in my lifetime and Venus is definitely in the top 3. The bartenders are always quick to get you a drink. It can get busy and the pizza can take almost 45 minutes to come out but who cares? Not me, I'm too busy watching Lloyd and Harry and getting drunk on a Sunday afternoon. read more

Venus cafe serves delicious pizza. My mother and grandfather coached baseball for years, and one of my favorite childhood memories is when they would take us to Venus after a winning game. A beautiful summer evening full of baseball and pizza, whats not to love?! Not much has changed because I still love baseball and pizza, I'm just not sure which one I love more :-b! Read the negative reviews, all are so true. My last experience there I sat at the bar and ordered a laced well done pizza. Came out not that way. Hungry, and don't usually complain, I ate it. Couple next to me had the same and looked great, what I wanted. I asked the bartender, can't miss her!!!, about mine. She said you ate more than half, tuff shit! Left her $1 tip, nasty. OK it's a dive bar - get over it and the surly service is part of the experience. It is hands down no apologies the best bar pizza on the south shore.Get the Plain, Roni or your favorite toppings - you can't go wrong. This was our first visit to Venus (although I've had their pizza a few times before at family parties). The restaurant is kind of a dive. I don't mind dives, but when we visited it was kind of dark inside. While the restaurant was probably very clean, it just looked dirty. But we didn't visit Venus for the decor. I don't know what it is with Venus, but their pizza is a little sloppier than I expect. Our pizza was greasier than normal, not very uniform looking, and it was just kind of missing something. This is similar to my previous experiences with Venus. I think they have quality issues that could probably be fixed with better training. That being said, the pizza was pretty good but with so many other places to try we probably won't go back. read more

Usually a pretty good South Shore bar pie. Eclectic little place and crowd but decent pizza. The only thing I do not care for is they use large slices of pepperoni rather than small discs so I get other toppings as they have quite a variety. Pizza was great, staff was rude. Specifically the cook. I got a mushroom pizza with extra cheese. A 2 topping pizza costs $9.40 but I was charged $11.40. Curiosity got the best of me so I asked if it was considered 3 toppings. The girl at the bar said it shouldn't be and that's when the big mouth cook chimed in saying "Cheese costs money"! (Well duhhhh. So do mushrooms, onions, etc.) I told him we weren't complaining, just inquiring, at which point he said "and I'm saying, cheese costs money ." The pizzas are very good but, greesy. They can be slow at times. The place is kinda dumpy like mitch said but, you are not going to a fine restaurant you are going to a bar; expect bar atmosphere... The pizza has gone down hill some. i think the toppings mostly. the crust remains the same. I like to get this pizza every time i visit my mom. read more

Had a great cheese pizza from Venus last night! Requested well done and it came out perfect!

So me and all my friends were looking for somewhere local we can grab drinks & food so we tried Venus cafe. Got seated right away. When the first person tried to order a drink, she got flustered and was like "ok I need to see IDs" in an aggravated tone. We expected to get IDed being all young adults.... we gave them to her and it's like she didn't know what year made us legal. Awkward. She gave my friend a hard time because of her state ID embarrassing the f**** out of her. She accused her of having her social on it but it was just the date it was issued. She then asked for three more forms of ID from her. The waitress takes our drink orders assuming it is now ok and we are all set. Then ANOTHER man from the bar walks over sits down with us and asked to see our IDs again... and says he doesn't feel like serving minors. Who's a minor here? He was nicer than the waitress but then yelled to her from he was that it was ok. Like don't you know how to check IDs for yourself??? I almost felt frustrated at this point. The food and service was just ok. But she was horrible and didn't have enough experience with customer service. ALSO ate her meal close to us before serving us. Then a bell went off and she ran to get the pizza I'm pretty sure without washing her hands. And was serving us while chewing food. they have a buy 3 get 1 free deal for pizza. There are 3 of us in my house so we ordered 3 pizzas and they gave us a free pizza coupon for next time. I was so excited that I came back a few days later and bought another 3 pizzas....But.... this time when I pay I get " No you have to order 4 pizzas to get a free pizza we don't give out free coupons if you order 3."... please get all your employees to do the same thing. The pizza itself is a small bar (10 in.) pizza that tastes very unique and very good, but is extremely greasy. Imagine double the grease of the greasiest pizza you ever ate. Have been going to Venus for years and was always excellent. The past few times haven't been up to there high standards but tonight just couldn't believe how bad it was!!! Stopped in with my wife today. We were the only two people sitting at the bar. We ordered a plain and a pepperoni well done. The pizza was excellent. The husband and wife owners couldn't have been nicer. We had a nice conversation with the wife while we ate. Although it's a little far for us, we will definitely be back. read more

The pizza is good and cheap. That's why you are there. They lose stars with me because the decor is extremely dated and the staff is extremely rude. This restaurant is very successful in Whitman and the staff is all family. They have this holier than thou attitude that has consistently soured my experience every time. The pizza is good, but not so incredibly good that they can walk around and talk down to the customers. I brought some family here from out of town and warned them about the service. I spent the next two days apologizing for how rude our waitress was. It stood out in their trip to Massachusetts for all the wrong reasons. I have lived around the South Shore my entire life. Venus has dated decor- and every time they change even one little thing (paint, new seats, menus that aren't just printed..) the prices go up & up. The bar side is very grungy- and to be honest the dining side isn't much better. The floors are always dirty- none of the waitresses know how to smile & since they got rid of 1/2 price pizza it isn't worth it anymore. Even if you just want a small glass of water, they make you pay- which is ridiculous- plastic cups, plastic silverware- not really sure where they are even going with this place anymore. read more

The takeout area has dead leaves and dirt on the floor, layers of scum and dirt on the molding on the walls. The vent in the floor in front of the counter has piles of dirt and cigarette buts in it and it's blowing AC up with all the dirt in your face as you stand in counter and it smells like mildew. Flies dive bomb you while waiting. I didn't see the kitchen from there but saw the cook had a disgusting filthy apron on. Asked for a half and half plain pizza. it came with uncooked toppings sloppily all over the whole pizza which was grease logged and cheese just glopping off when picking up a slice. Yup I'm pulling out a 90's reference for this one. I only reserve it for special occasions. L's were not my fave but they were still good. Expect to be ignored if it's in the least bit busy, and don't even try to buy a beer if you're from out of state. They won't even look at an out of state ID, even if you have a million other cards in your name. best bar pizza around. the main guy making the pizzas is awesome. extremely nice. they have a ton of pizza types, and you can have a double dough pizza if thin isn't your style. the pepperoni is crispy around the edges, as it should be, and there is the perfect amount of grease - you won't need napkins to sop it up. they also make a KILLER Cinnamon pizza. it's better than fried dough. it is indescribable. order this as a double dough. it's amazing, especially late night. you would never guess from the outside of this place that they have the best pizza in town, except for the constant flow of people in and out, with stacks of brown bagged pizzas. the only thing i'd say that is keeping this place from being 5 stars is the canned mushrooms and spinach for toppings. but the bacon feta pizza is really generous with its crispy bacon and cheese. its delicious. read more

I've been eating Venus pizzas for 20 years. They are the best bar pizza around. My favorite is the pepperoni but if you want something different, try an "Elaine's Special". It's feta cheese, chicken and garlic with no tomato sauce. The cinnamon pizza is great for dessert. Great atmosphere, friendly staff (mostly all related), and reasonable prices make Venus my favorite restaurant in Whitman. read more
