When we walked in it was pretty empty, even though most of the surrounding restaurants had wait times (except for the bar area) that probably should've been a sign. Our server was pretty friendly, however once the food showed up he never checked on us or asked us if we wanted our drinks refilled. The food: The chicken enchiladas were very, very bland. The only thing you could taste was the tomatillo sauce which actually tasted more like tomato paste. So we ordered a cheese quesadilla to have something quickly replace it. We told our server we didn't like the chicken enchiladas and he could've cared less. He took the uneaten plate and said nothing when we told him the food wasn't good. He looked at our table. Saw we had finished our drinks but still didn't offer a refill. Just took the chicken away without saying much. The cheese quesadilla was also very bland. The cheese was flavorless and it was swimming in grease. We definitely will not be coming back here again. We don't recommend the food and the service was poor. read more

We've been going to VC for quite some time and it seems like they've changed ownership a few times and this last one is just plain A.W.F.U.L. To start, we ordered a Corona and Bass on tap. the waitress comes back 5 minutes later to say they're out of coronas and offered the baby-sized version for $3. Mexican restaurant without Coronas?? We accepted, but the beer off the tap was flat. So was the seltzer water we ordered. Flat and still as a tap water with a wedge of lime. Their chips were stale and portions cut to 1/3 of what it used to be. Then the food came. It was not fit for consumption. I ordered the vegetarian enchilada. The vegetables must have been sitting in the freezer for some time or their defrosting feature is broken. The BOILED veggies wrapped in my soggy, cold tortillas tasted so freezer-burnt it was inedible. The chicken in the flautas too must have been boiled and tasted so bland. They also seemed to have run out of any kind of seasoning as their barely defrosted food was disgusting. Awful awful food, so very disappointed. There goes another restaurant who lost their touch over the years. Can't wait for it to close so another good restaurant can take it's place. Ugh. read more

I went here at a friend's recommendation and wasn't impressed. I got the salmon ceviche and a michelada that cost way too much. The ceviche was serviceable but nothing special and the michelada had spice but the beer tasted watered down. Saturday at 11 pm. I walk in with another female friend, we got a table while our male partners were chatting outside before coming in. The owner (white female between 4' 12" and 5' 1" white hair likely in her mid 60's) decided to stop my male partner at the door when he was trying to come to our table. She stood right in front of him, blocking his passage way as he said excuse me and repeated that he was trying to get to our table, to which she responded "Where you going? Let me find out if it is your table because you can't go anywhere unless I say it's ok." His other male friend asked what was going on and after pointing toward the table where we were seated, several times, she let him pass. She then proceeded to sit three tables down and stare directly at us for our entire meal. It was so uncomfortable that the guests sitting next to us also noticed the fenale owner staring and asked the servers what was going on. One of the guests decided to speak to her and she smirked throughout the entire conversation as if she knew she was making us uncomfortable and was proud of herself. The whole experience was tainted by her disrespect and disregard for a pleasant customer service experience. It was really unfortunate because the food was great and the servers were very kind and apologetic about her attitude (which to be honest, it seems like they have tons of practice trying to cover up for her mistakes) Will never return to this place as this is a disgusting way to profile and question guests who are trying to keep her business going. read more

I came across this place while walking home on one of the coldest nights of the year. As a matter of fact they named a drink after it "close the door" as patrons kept entering but forgot to close the door. I digress. Everyone is welcomed. There is no "attitude" from the staff and in my experience from the patrons either. I can feel old Billyburgh heck I can feel old Brooklyn. At the same time the bar embraces, welcomes all of the changes in the neighborhood, there is even a "Mayor" of the bar and neighborhood. Recently several friends and I organized a birthday dinner for a good friend of mine. The owner personally welcomed him and wished him a happy birthday!. Yes the cool guy with the vintage 40's hats who works his butt off and still has time to welcome new guest! The steak dinner I had that night was out of this world. This is one of a dying breed. Found this place while looking for a random place to eat at 9pm on Saturday night. People were already out drinking, but this place wasn't too crowded, so we went in. We started with a pitcher of grapefruit margaritas on the rocks. Perfectly blended. They also gave us some tortilla chips and a mild salsa. To start, we ordered the Salmon ceviche and an Elote (grilled corn cob). The ceviche was good, though the soy sauce was quite dominant. On the other hand, the elote was incredible. It was dusted with cheese, and each bite was a pleasure. For the main course, we got the Green Burrito with vegetables of the day and Enchiladas de la Casa. Both were tasty and gigantic. We were stuffed to the gills and ready to go; the waiter convinced us to hang out a bit longer with a complimentary pair of drinks. We let him choose and received a special margarita--coffee and cayenne pepper! Overall, a decent experience here. Check was $80 for two people to have appetizers, entrees, and a pitcher. read more

Seriously, I love this place. The drinks are always flowing.  The staff is very friendly.  The prices are extremely reasonable.   You almost forget you're in overpriced williamsburg...almost. The food is great! I really want to point this out.  Because although this place has beer/shot specials, great frozen margaritas and the front gets packed with libation lovers on a regular basis, it considers itself a resturuant first, bar second.  The result is fresh food, made the way you want it. If you love guacamole you need to be here.  Spicy gauc ftw! Another cool thing about this restaurant/bar is that it sells local artists' work on the wall.  I like that sort of helping the people who help you out, mentality. My satisfaction with vera cruz is matched only by my selfish want to keep it to myself. 10 out of 10.  Keep it going. I can't speak to the food, but the NWA (negroni with attitude -- essentially a mezcal negroni with the orange flavor bumped up with some grand marnier) was hands down the best cocktail I've had in a really long time. The first table was horrible, it was right under the air conditioner and it was leaking, I didn't like that the staff wasn't aware of that. I nicely asked to be moved. Whatever you do dont go here if your looking for a good frozen margarita! I went last weekend with a friend and we ordered frozen margaritas, they tasted more like frozen lemonade! And the liquor was almost nonexistent! When we brought it to the bartenders attention he gave us this line about how it comes out of a machine, Instead of apologizing and giving us a little extra splash of tequila or something. So we decided to just order a shot of tequila to pour inside, we requested jose cuervo which they didn't carry. He suggested their house tequila which was another waste of money. On my first outing to Williamsburg, my friends took me to Vera Cruz for dinner, with the warning that I should expect good margaritas but mediocre food. That's not a bad assessment actually. The margaritas are definitely good (get the frozen margarita!), and it's nice to be able to sit outdoors (they have a pretty large and pleasant outdoor patio in the back). The food however didn't impress me much, and is definitely overpriced. First the chips and salsa kind of sucked. My chicken burrito wasn't too bad, but $12?! I think it's 6 or 7 dollars a glass but its worth it. Service - Great! Corns came out pretty fast, our drinks were on our table quick, no complaints here. Our waitress was pretty friendly so it kept all us in a good mood before heading out to another bar. Crowd/Ambiance - Didn't pay much attention to the crowd here because I was in heaven with my corn on the cob and margarita. The inside of VeraCruz is pretty dim but has a pretty romantic atmosphere I would say. The inside seating is pretty limited and if I am not mistaken, there is a outdoor seating area which I didn't have the chance to check out. stopped in at VeraCruz before the Brooklyn WInery YEE last night. got to Brooklyn a little early, and wanted to grab a bite. there was nothing really spectacular about this place. service was good, the bartender was friendly and we chose to sit at the bar to eat. happened to come in during happy hour, so i got a $4 margarita, which actually wasn't bad at all... and pretty strong. the food here seems to be inconsistent. i ordered the shrimp & poblano peppers enchiladas, and my friend, fellow Yelper Juan T., ordered pork tacos. he didn't seem to like his tacos, saying it was too salty and the texture of the meat wasn't that good. my enchiladas were decent, i love poblano peppers, so that made it decent for me. however, i do wish they used more cheese and not the Mole sauce over it. but i guess i should have asked what kind of sauce was on it... i just personally don't like Mole sauce. rice and beans were pretty good though! overall, ok place. randomly chose it while walking down Bedford, don't know if I would necessarily return. read more

I remember this place before the $15 shrimp burrito but I was craving something Mexican in preparation for my favorite Californian. The burrito was the size of a small baby, drowned in green salsa and the inside was filled mostly with rice and beans. Rather than whole pieces of fish, each shrimp was cut into tiny pieces so maybe there were 3 in the whole dish. I left my meal barely touched because I didn't want to submit my stomach to the torture. For $10 more get a lobster. Never again! read more

I come from the South where Tex-Mex is almost an art form. This was not so much Tex-Mex as it was Yuck-Mex. I have had a couple of OK meals here but for the most part I've been seriously disappointed. Williamsburg is hurting for some decent Mexican food and I was always hopeful that each visit to Vera Cruz would change my mind and make me satisfied. I stumbled in here haphazardly after the East River ferry I was on headed to midtown malfunctioned, and evacuated in N. Williamsburg. My boyfriend and I ordered Paloma's...very good tequila drinks...The drinks were potent and tasty with yummy salt rimmed glasses. We both ordered the fish of the day...which happened to be stuffed salmon. The salmon was lacking in freshness. However, the stuffing was tasty and made up for what the fish lacked in freshness. I was happy that the salmon was a perfect center cut filet. The rice and refried beans were nothing special, and were cold. When the waitress brought the check were were grossly overcharged. The check should have been 60 bucks...but she somehow added everything up to 92 bucks...The shear stupidity of this ruffled our feathers a bit. The owner came over herself to apologize, and explained it was the waitresses first day. Perhaps she should give this new waitress a calculator. The ambiance was nice and the place drew an interesting crowd. This place has potential, but I would not return. read more

Wandered up Bedford intending to go to Williamsburg Creamery for a cone on a Sunday afternoon. We unintentionally walked right by a taco truck and my boyfriend mused, should we get tacos? I had been craving fajitas all weekend, so I was in for some Mexican. We took a gander at the taco truck but it looked pretty below par, so we glanced around the block for Mexican alternatives. Dos Toros caught our eye but then we saw a little hole in the wall with a bar that had window seating - Veracruz. We wandered over to take a look at the menu and ah ha! They had fajitas, sold. We sat at the open-air window seat and had a couple Mexican beers and started with their guacamole. The consistency was good, but it was lacking in distinct flavor. We asked the server for a few limes, hot sauce and salt and pepper. He was super accommodating and didn't bat an eyelash. We doctored up the guac right there and it was instantly much better. It really could have just used lime, cilantro and spices. The chips were great - piping hot and lightly salted. The fajitas came out in perfect timing just when we were finishing the guac. Of course they came out piping hot as well, on a skillet and the peppers and onions has the most incredible flavor! I could have drank the sauce from the bottom of the skillet if it wasn't so hot. The fajitas just came with tortillas, the skillet of steak and peppers, and rice and beans. We asked for lettuce and an extra tortilla, which also came out super fast (and they gave 2 tortillas!). The staff here was really friendly and highly accommodating to whatever we asked for. If I was in the mood for sit-down authentic Mexican, I would certainly come back. After we ate we discovered this amazing outdoor cafe in the back of the restaurant. It is this sort of hidden secret garden, and there were many groups out back enjoying margaritas and apps. They have great seating options (window out front, garden in the back). Took off one star because it was good Mexican, but I can't say it was out of this world, and another star because we had to basically re-make our own guac to taste (however if you like it bland just tomatoes and avocado, it may be your thing). read more
