After hitting up a movie, we went walking through the rain looking for a quick bite and a drink before heading home so we randomly decided on VeraCruz. It was pretty empty (it was around 10pm on a Tuesday), so when we sat at the end of the bar and noticed the bartender was at the end chatting with two guys, my friend said to me "Oh great we walked in to a place with a hipster bartender who probably only serves the locals". Let me just say that shortly after that statement, his foot was so stuffed in his mouth, I'm surprised he was able to eat. The bartender turned out to be awesome. She was talkative, attentive and a saint for putting up with my indecisive "should I eat like a fat kid? Should I be good?" argument that I have with myself daily. I went with a salad since I knew I was stealing some of the quesadilla my friend was getting (That's right...I was THAT GIRL you men love so much lol). I can't tell you how shocked I was when the food arrived and it was REAL MEXICAN FOOD. I haven't seen a quesadilla since I was in Arizona. It was a little messy but the flavor was there. I'll begin by saying the frozen mango margaritas are divine. It's as though the Stay Pufft marshmallow man and Jose Cuervo had a delicious lovechild. Mmm. Everything else is fairly lame. The service is just okay, the food is blah, and there are usually ridiculously drunk people there. But my god, the margaritas. I went here recently with my boyfriend and a friend on a Saturday night. They seated my friend and I right away, even though we told the waiter we were waiting another 15 minutes for my boyfriend. We started with the guacamole, which was delicious...it had a really nice citrus tang to it. The salsa that they give you for the table is really thin, watery, and disappointing, so I would suggest getting some guac to go with the complimentary chips. I also got a margarita, which didn't taste like much of anything and wasn't very big for the $6 they charged me for it. This four star review is given mostly for my entree. I got the skirt steak, and it was INSANELY good. A huge pile of perfectly marinated, medium rare strips. They were so good I ate the whole plate. My boyfriend had the pork burrito, which he raved about...and he's picky about his Mexican food, being from the West Coast. Overall, I was satisfied with my experience, and would definitely try it again when I'm back in Williamsburg...minus the margarita. read more

The only redeeming quality of this place is it was open. We had to send out signal flares to be seated only to be ignored for five minutes. I could have gone to the store and bought margarita ingredients and made own faster than the time it took for us to get them. In their defense the margaritas actually were good though. Once we were able to Shanghai the waiter to take our food order the guacamole came out quickly. I can only imagine this deviation from shockingly abysmal service is because they wanted that toxic substance out of the kitchen ASAP. It was what I can only describe as green paste. At this point we didn't want to fall victim to the sunk cost fallacy so we decided to settle up and leave. It took a good 10-15 to get the server to produce a check. Should we feel bad that we interrupted his dancing around the bar? When the check finally appeared out was the wrong one, about $50 less than ours. Bad food experience. We have been in the neighborhood for a few years and this place was on the decline. It had been over a year so we thought we would give it another try. It couldn't be that bad if it is still here right? We ordered the nachos to start with. You know when cheese is just about to go south and it has that moldy smell? That's what they tasted like. I am certainly one for stinky cheese in the right setting - some Limburger with a good wine, but that doesn't apply with nachos. We took one bite and called our server over. We were very polite about the matter and although he was friendly he only shrugged and whisked the food away. Our main course immediately came out. My husband has the vege torta and I had the vege enchiladas. He said his meal was okay, but mine was bad. They were more like soft tacos with microwaved frozen veg stuffed inside with a few black beans. There was no sauce, no apologies and the restroom was grim. Vera Cruz has been here for 30 years. Its a Mexican restaurant where the food is cooked by actual Mexican cooks. They've worked here forever. The owner is a nice Polish-American, family-oriented guy who is always tossing around Mezcal shots like it's nobodies business. This place has served as a safe haven for me anytime I've got a night of partying. Either before or after. For however many people. My friend and I came for dinner on Sunday evening. The bar was filled with people but the restaurant had perhaps a couple of guests when we arrived. Staffing seems to be the common theme in the reviews and I'm afraid that I have to agree with the negative reviews. There was no server available during what could be considered prime dinner time. The bartender was covering both the bar and the restaurant, which to no fault of his own, caused the service to be sub-par. Nevertheless, the food was tasty but average. I actually frequent Vera Cruz quite often. That being said this is my go to spot for some fish tacos in williamsburg. The tacos are a decent size and 1 order comes with 3. Combine that with a side of rice and beans, a mango margarita and you're good to go. They also have a back yard with benches for outdoor dining as well. Ok. I haven't tried some of the other places that people have mentioned so maybe, there are more "authentic" mexican places. For sit down mexican (tourist mexican as I sometimes call it) this place is alright. They give me chips and salsa when i sit down. I know, that's dumb right? But really, I like mexican places that give me chips and salsa. And the chips tasted like they were made (or at least fried) on the premises. And the salsa was alright. I had the margarita on the rocks. It was only six dollars. It had some tequilla in it. it had some lime in it. I liked it. Also tried the mole enchiladas. The sauce, it tasted like a mole. Although I've frequented this establishment a few times before, I have to say that I was very disappointed with the food on my last visit. On a recent visit with my daughter, (who ordered the chicken burrito), we noticed tiny shards of BONE in her burrito... not just a small bit... It seems that every single bite she took had tiny shards of bone. I was going to bring it to their attention but she felt horrible about it and didn't want me to make a scene. So we opted just to push that dish to the side. I'm generally quite pleased with the quality of food and their service. Maybe we just simply showed up on an "off-day"... it happens. We came here last night (05/31/19) sat down at the bar waiting for the bartender to serve us. I got up to go use the bathroom and one of the waitresses physically blocked me from using the restroom while we waited to be serve. She assumed we were just there to use the bathroom and physically barricaded me from using it. It's one thing to make it known that bathrooms are for customers that have already placed an order (although we were getting drinks) and another to physically barricade a customer from moving freely in an establishment. She cornered us. Not ok. AWEFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE! Don't give your money to this place. Burritos with steak are fab...steak i teder and so filling as the burritos are huge. If you go for the early bird for less than 15 bucks you can get a complete meal with a margarita and tip..this place is the best:) Frozen margaritas are sublime, make sure to request your salted rim:) This place is small, cozy, a bit romantic, and has a small backyard outdoor seating area that is in high demand during the warmer months. Man, I really wanted the food to be good at this place. We met friends for dinner and, as others have mentioned, the margaritas were strong (if way more acidic than I'm used to). The food, though... The salsa was like if someone drained the water from a can of tomatoes into a bowl and tossed in a piece of cilantro or two. The chips were too thick and ice-cold. The chicken enchilada was...okay, I guess. The best part of the meal was the rice and beans, but that's my favorite part of any Mexican meal, so it's hard to disappoint me there. On the plus side, the patio couldn't be cuter, the service was actually friendly and fast, and the portions were huge enough that two people could easily share one entree. Pretty cool place...I came here when visiting my fam for Christmas...we did a cousin outing and this was our first stop. Very small spot...only a handful of tables in the back for eating. Your plate will come with 6 highly overloaded chips, so you'll need to use your basket of chips to eat the rest of the goop (which is yummy indeed). Service can be hit or miss. I am writing this review in honor of the Beaner badge I received from yelp last night (the badge is actually a bean w/a mustache wearing a sombrero). This was as good a place as any to receive the distinction as the restaurant reads as authentic. The happy hour is pretty good. For $9 you will get a serviceable soup, and your choice of encheladas or Burrito. The $4 margaritas don't hurt either. The restaurant is in a great neighborhood, with friendly patrons and staff. The decor is really nice and reminds me of Rocco Taco. However, we went for happy hour and had some $2 tacos. The pork tacos were very good and the drink was okay. What we didnt like about this spot was the service. The waiter took forever to get our drinks. I had to ask another waiter to pass our drinks that were at the bar. The tacos took forever. Food: decent but not anything special. The chicken quesadilla I got was very small. The guacamole was tasty. However, the service was AWFUL. First, the waiter got two of our 4 orders wrong, and we had to wait for them to make it new again. Next, the waiter took our drink order, and never brought it to the bar. It wasn't until we asked for our drinks--he actually tried to take the order again and didn't even remember we'd ordered them. Even with the late meals, we were practically done eating by the time we got the drinks. The place was basically empty, yet we had to flag him down for more chips and to remind him about the drinks. Unexciting and overpriced food and some of the worst service. A friend and I went to this spot for dinner and drinks on Margarita Day (Feb 2017). The vegetable quesadilla I ordered (which was $14), contained vegetables that had clearly been frozen. It was predominantly carrots, which is an unexpected vegetable to so dominantly feature in a quesadilla. Ambiance was fine and the margaritas were good. My displeasure with the taste of my overpriced veggie quesadilla would not have prompted me to (I kid you not) create Yelp profile just so that I could write this negative review. The reason I did so was because of what happened next: After my friend and I split a chips & guacamole appetizer ($12....), both ordered entrees, and each ordered two margaritas per person, we were hurried out of the restaurant before even finishing our drinks. The oddities started when one of the waiters came by and reached for our plates when we both had eaten only half of our food. Then, a few minutes later, when I still had half of my margarita left, a different waiter brought us the check. When we ignored it because we weren't finished drinking, he came back a minute later and told us he needed our table. It's one thing to do that when someone nurses one small coffee for 3 hours in a busy cafe or something, but if someone has ordered a full meal including appetizer, multiple drinks, and food, and there are empty tables open, there's no excuse for kicking someone out like that. Where to begin, we were seated quickly, but that is where the quickness ended. After sitting at the table (mind you the restaurant was NOT full by any means) for about 20 mins I'd assumed we'd been forgotten about since people who were seated long after us were waited on before we were. Now maybe it was just me but having been in the industry as a server and bartender for 8 yrs, you NEVER make a pregnant woman wait, and that is what they did. Upon being seated we were served some water and very watery salsa and chips but that was where our wait service ended. I finally told my b/f we had been forgotten about and we proceeded to walk up to the bar to order before finally being noticed. At this point, I was so irritated I just wanted to order what I came there for which was the fried ice cream and leave. Had I seen another place in our area that served fried ice cream, I would have never ordered a thing from this restraurant. To top it all off, after being forgotten about in the back of the restaurant, when we ordered from the bartender she was very stand offish and rude! The Fried Ice Cream was "OK" definitely not the best I've ever had and certainly not worth the 7.50 they charge you, My b.f ordered the quesadillas and though I didn't even know it was possible to mess those up, they managed to. All in all, the service I experienced was horrible, and the 2nd I find another place to get fried ice cream to fulfill when I get a craving, I will prob never eat here again. To now see how things have changed and how many cool lounge, bar, eateries there are still amazes me. We were supposed to go somewhere else but parking and menu issues pushed us into looking for a new place last minute. We ended up at Vera cruz. BIG MISTAKE. Mexican should be easy filling and a guilty pleasure...right? The guacamole was like an onion patch w/ a smidge of avocado tossed in for color. The rice in every one of our Burrito and Enchilada dishes (4 total) was RAW! SERIOUSLY, we didn't order crunchy rice! My friends refused to send food back and complain.
