As fine as it gets for dining in Jackson. Veritas is nice. The menu is limited to very good selections. You can tell they really put a lot of time and thought into just the right menu to create a good mix for any palates. Steaks, pasta, seafood, and specialty entrees. The dessert menu was normal but everything was excellent. Full bar, appropriate live music and intimate booths. It's was prom night when we visited. The bathroom floor was littered with sequins and glitter. It was lovely to see all the pretty girls and dresses. Thankfully our visit was 5:15pm and ahead of the crush. The service was exceptional. We never waited or wondered where she was and she was taking care of it before we knew we needed it. The spinach artichoke dip had a kick and too much lemon but good size. My bone-in ribeye was good but my husband expensive filet was way over cooked. Asked for medium and he got well done. Everyone else raved about their food. The prices here are really high. Our party of 5 cashed out at $465 with tip. The Chophouse prices but not that level of quality. I'm including this so whomever sees this can manage expectations. Drinks have no price but bar tab showed each regular cocktail was $15. MiL was impressed and since it was Mother's Day dinner, glad we chose Veritas. read more

My husband and I had a great date night at Veritas! We got dinner here because we had tickets to Drinks & Deception, a magic show hosted upstairs. I think Daniel Martin might have an ongoing residency at Veritas on select dates, since I've seen tickets go on sale for shows over several months. The show was entertaining, and we liked Daniel! (I will say that nothing in the show truly stumped us, but nonetheless it was fun.) The show does seem sell out quickly when tickets are released! Afterwards, we both ended up getting the surf and turf for dinner and enjoyed every bite. The truffle potato puree was delicious, and the seasonal vegetables for us were these really crispy and perfectly dressed brussels sprouts. The lobster tail was a litttle bit chewy (slightly overcooked?) but still very tasty. The menu's on the pricier side, but there's a good variety of yummy sounding options. We had instructions from our event email to park in the back of the restaurant, in the black lot. I think it's permit only for certain hours, but worked well for us and the evening hours we were there. The ambiance in the restaurant is very nice. Gorgeous ambiance, tasty food, and excellent service. When we were arrived at 10:30am, we were the first to arrive and they were still setting up for brunch. They were not quite ready yet, which was not an issue because we were in no rush. I enjoyed sitting with my friends and enjoying the quiet, elegant atmosphere. The entire staff was very friendly and I could tell they really cared. We received many apologies for not being ready. The service definitely made up for any issues with food not being ready. Things started to gradually appear on the buffet tables. It was a brunch buffet and there was a nice variety of things to choose from. The food was good overall. They had a omelette stand where you could get a personalized omelette. The spinach lettuce didn't seem to cook in mine and stayed pretty crunchy, but the other flavors were good. I appreciated the build your own sushi bowl station. (There weren't any bowls at first so I put it on my plate, and the rice was a bit chewy, but the tuna was tasty, and they had cute soy sauce containers.) I really enjoyed the vegetable frittata, yogurt parfait, and the breakfast flatbread. Other choices included waffles, sausage, eggs, prime rib, cheeses, meats, and more. They had plenty of desserts and ice cream too. They also offered gluten free sandwiches, which was a nice touch because one of my friends is on a gluten free diet. Very friendly and attentive service. We were checked on consistently for refills of water, coffee, and mimosas. I enjoyed seeing the linen napkins, beautiful and clean fish tank, and lovely piano. What can I say. When I saw Veritas, I did not expect a sushi bar. I've been at least 3 times for the sushi and each time the fish was fresh and delicious. The style was also not typical rolls even though they had some of the usual fare. The waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. If there's a wait for the sushi, the staff alerts you quickly so you know what is happening. I've only sat in the bar area so I'm not sure about the restaurant as a whole but the bar is comfortable. The seats have backs and the bar it self is homey. It's a wonderful space to sit, eat your meal, have a drink, and listen to music if you happen to come in on a live music day. I always enjoy my visit whether I'm alone or with friends. read more

On a whim, stopping here while driving back home, we decided to stop at Veritas for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised at how fancy this place felt. It had ample seating and a super cute vibe. We were greeted promptly by the host and our server. We decided to order the walleye, chicken and the French onion soup. Everything was wonderful! The complimentary focaccia was so good. Light and fluffy with the whipped butter making it absolutely delicious! My boyfriend ordered the walleye and could have it done different ways (he chose blackened) and got 2 sides to go with it. The chicken was so juicy and well flavored. The polenta was extra cheesy and the mushrooms were perfectly cooked. I quite enjoyed walking upon this restaurant. The towering wooden doors made a grand entrance for me possible. Love it! A cooler with cutesy chocolates has it's home next to the host stand up front. I have yet to try one. From first appearance they are lovely. The decor at the bar is warm and welcoming. Almost vintage, slightly boho chic ~ The rest of the decor is a little.. off. I fail to see a cohesive style. I believe their menu cover is perhaps the best piece of design within the building. The bathroom is delightful and heading in the right direction. There could be some improvements to the cleanliness of fixtures and liveliness of decor. A Michigan white wine and a frothy cappuccino started my journey here; They were served in a classic aesthetic, and tasted great. The "bread to start" is on the doughy side. The flavor and consistency make me think I've taken a mouthful of stale cheez-its. Is this what focaccia I ordered the Faroe Island Salmon. It was beautifully flavored. Only problem for me? Too much salt. The side of sautéed mushrooms & truffle potato purée I received were dancing in my mouth. Flavorful, balanced, delicious!! The server was fantastic. We made reservations for a Saturday and it took just a few minutes to be seated. The surrounding area of the restaurant is really nice. It had cute lights up and down the street and was very clean. The restaurant has a great vibe. It has low lighting so very romantic for date night. The live music was fantastic. Our server was amazingly awesome. Her name is Olivia and she was just perfect. I had the blackened chicken tortellini. It was fabulous! The sauce was to die for. My entire table agreed that the bread was the best we had ever had. I don't know how they make that but YUM! Hidden gem in Jackson Michigan! In downtown is this restaurant and they are serving AMAZING food. Starting off with individual fresh herb bread. (See photo). I had the special, skate with capers, fingerling potatoes, and roasted carrots. I can't rave about it enough. It was light, very palletable, and perfectly done. I must say, this place made my first trip to downtown Jackson very memorable. The aesthetics are amazing. The location is quaint on the main strip downtown and the inside is very modern and eclectic, with unique decor. We took a quick tour while waiting for drinks, I advise you to do the same. We started with the cider mill sour and the citrus blossom cocktails , which were fabulous. Since it was brunch only, we followed with the crabcakes Benedict and bananas foster french toast. I recently had an opportunity to visit this establishment with a group of friends for a party. I have to honest up front, this place wouldn't be my first choice for dinner. Not that I'm profiling this place, I'd just normally prefer a more casual dining experience. I'll also add that my experience was part of a private party upstairs. We did go through the downstairs and interact with some staff, but the majority of my time was upstairs away from the traditional dining. The building inside and out is very nice. It is well decorated, neat and clean. The bathroom was spotless. Our dining room felt cozy and comfortable. The waitstaff was very professional. Everyone we spoke with was polite, courteous and helpful. They were on point over everything. The food and menu is really where I started to struggle. Hear me out on this..... have you ever walked into an art gallery store and seen something you liked? If it was a painting, a piece of pottery, or even a photo of your favorite lighthouse. You want it until you realize the price tag says $300, and you walked out empty handed. That doesn't mean it wasn't a great photo, it just wasn't a $300 photo. That's how I felt about my Ahi tuna salad for $30. I don't know what I expected from my $30 salad but, I just didn't feel like I got it. The Surf and Turf on the menu for $75 better be helping me paint my house too. The menu had a good variety of food options, and they all sounded pretty good. I considered a few other options before my salad until I saw some of the review photos. Again, not that they were bad photos, just not what I was willing to pay. Maybe a 3 star seems a little harsh, but we can't do half stars. A 4 star for me means I'm eating there again, if I'm in town. Unfortunately, I can't say that I would unless I was invited. This 3 star is because it was a good experience, with some artsy pottery food, that I would have put back down and walked away. If I'm back in Jackson with a couple hundred extra dollars to spare, that's burning a hole in my pocket, AND I'm hungry, then I'll stop back in. Otherwise, my house doesn't need painted. read more

As a pilot and lower 48 traveler I try a lot of steakhouse. Veritas was a middle of the road type of place. The service was above average. Everyone was attentive from top to bottom. The ambiance again was above average. Even had live music that wasn't too loud to enjoy a romantic night out. Where it fell flat unfortunately was in just the overall taste of the food. I got the 12oz ny strip. With sautéed mushrooms and Delmonico potatoes. The wife got the French onion soup and we shared a whitefish dip. The dip was pretty good. We thought the cheese on top over powered the dip so we ate around it. The soup was also pretty good. The steak and all the food came out and looked amazing. But kinda fell flat. Lacked strong flavor. Perhaps that's the wood grilled style of the place hoping that is enough flavor. But seemed to lack seasoning. Same could b said for the mushrooms. Had some just the night b4 at home outta a can with better flavor. The potatoes were ok. But bland. The biggest issue we had was for a Saturday night. They were 1/3 full at best. And we didn't get our meals until 70 min after sitting down. Our server went in to check on it. Best she could. And most times wouldn't have been a bother but we gave ourselves 90 min to eat b4 our other plans. And if our experience is typical u need 2 hrs to eat and not be rushed. The food for $90 wasn't worth it. I fancy myself an above average cook. We ordered the French Onion Gratinée, Fettuccine Alfredo with Grilled Chicken, New York Strip, Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, and Delmonico Potatoes. The soup and the macaroni and cheese were delicious and the real flavor winners at this restaurant. Everything else was pretty subpar - especially for the price. Our waiter made several comments about hating the job and that it used to be a much crummier place. He also discussed "how terrible Jackson used to be" which was uncomfortable. The New York Strip was charred so badly that they remade the steak for us to take home - even our waiter commented on how terrible it looked. The Fettuccine Alfredo was average but not very flavorful. Delmonico Potatoes are a potato casserole of sorts coated in cheese and some sort of cracker - they were pretty good. read more

Expecting to be wowed but left disappointed and feeling, frankly, a little ripped off. We attended Drinks and Deception upstairs. Afterwards, my husband was allured by the smell of steak in the air, so we decided to stay for dinner. A long horned steer head on the wall in the bar had him convinced the dry aged steak must be amazing here. We had no reservation so were seated at a large booth. I'm not sure why since there were plenty of tables that remained empty during the several hours we spent there. The patrons on either side of us kept slamming themselves against the back of their booths, which left us bouncing around during our entire meals. Very unpleasant. Service was pleasant, but VERY slow. At least for our table. Our waitress kept running around between two other tables around us, leaving us neglected. I can only presume it's because we weren't ordering alcohol since we had already drank during the show. We ordered a tempura shrimp roll appetizer, which was OK. A lengthy wait to get one piece of house bread. It wasn't worth the wait. It seemed rather stale. I ordered the seasonal butternut squash ravioli, which was swimming in some type of cream sauce. It was supposed to have fried sage. There was fresh sage on top of it, which did not complement the dish. My husband ordered the dry aged ribeye. I have never seen a steak cut so thin in my life for the price they were charging. Absolutely ridiculous. It was gristly and very unpleasant and not cooked to the appropriate temperature. Veritas, you should be ashamed of yourselves. We decided to give them another chance on dessert, cheesecake, and double chocolate cheesecake. The texture was rubbery and unpleasant, and seemed like an old defrosted frozen piece of crap. It's a shame, because this is a lovely building, pleasant surroundings, but the food is subpar and not worth the extravagant prices. I get there with my son around 6pm today Tuesday we left at 8:15 pm the service is terrible slow the food is ok but pricey for the service they have . The waitress offered us a wagyu stake they have on special of the day and we both ordered after 20 minutes later she comes back and she said they don't have the wagyu anymore, we ordered a filet and took 50 minutes bring the steaks. Table for one. I waited five minutes while a floor manager setup a small table enough for two (though there were already a few available and set?). I was greeted immediately by my waitress, Maria. She offered me water and to bring some fresh, hot bread while I perused the wine list and cocktail menus. All spirits and beers are on their own separate menu, while the wines are all listed at the end of the dinner menu. Interesting choice. I settled on a glass of French white Bordeaux. Mostly Napa Valley choices, so they could afford to branch out a little more. I had two focaccia to choose from: rosemary/thyme and garlic Parmesan. I chose the former, and it was exemplary: hot, decent crust but soft on the inside. Maria came back to take my order after an appropriate amount of time. I had dined here earlier in the day at lunch and knew that there were two dinner specials being offered, but she failed to mention them until I prompted her by asking if there were any specials. She then could not tell me what they were, except that one had lamb and they were out of that one. The other was a fish stew, but she would need to ask what was in it in order to describe it. I let her go. She returned to tell me the three varieties of fish in a cream based sauce. She failed to tell me it's served over polenta. I found out later chatting with the manager, Steve, that Maria is a new server and did not have much experience. I could tell, but she was hustling and trying, so props to her for that. I ordered the rainbow trout, sautéed, with the seasonal vegetables (brussel sprouts) and puréed white truffle potatoes. Huge serving- prepared perfectly! I prefer my sprouts to be more crisp, but that's a personal preference. Everything was full of flavor. The fish flaked beautifully; temperature was excellent; juicy and not over or underdone. Steve came to chat with me about all of these things and we had a lovely discussion about the chef, the restaurant, the soft opening they had, and other plans (brunch!). Overall, this restaurant is worth your attention, time, and money. They have some early growing pains, but nothing that will stop me from returning numerous times. The picanha was definitely over cooked to full on well done. No pink. Dry and a bit tough. Sadly the best part of the dish was the black beans and rice. Her pasta was so runny and sweet. You hear Alfredo and think creamy but it wasn't at all. The blue lighting at the bar may look great from afar but it's really weird on the eyes when sitting there. It should definitely be changed. I will say the bartenders were great and the service from them was top notch But why are the food runners serving from behind people at the bar?. You present from the front. I love this place, great people, great food; but, If your car has ever been parked in The Blake Building or Pearl Street Apts parking lot just across the street, and you had a sticker placed on your drivers' side window for parking there, that was done by Fawn Lange or John Colis. Seems like vandalism and a cover for theft. This, btw, is not just putting a sticker on your window, this is a rouse to check your car to see if it's locked and steal items in plain sight. This was our first time going here and it was for my birthday. The atmosphere was amazing with live music, we sat next to the fish tank. I honestly didn't expect much but when we got there and ate the food it literally blew me away. The first time I ate jerk chicken was in the Bahamas and this was the second time I had it here. In one word... disappointing. Made a reservation and the table wasn't ready when we got there. Proceeded to the bar to wait for the table and for the 15 mins we waited the bartender didn't even acknowledge we were there which meant we didn't even get a glass of water while waiting. When we finally were seated they brought the wrong glass of wine and then sometime after placing our dinner order we were informed that they were out of the steak my wife asked for, the waiter didn't ask her for a sub but asked me what she wanted... I'm like well she's right here you can ask her directly. I asked for a medium rare steak but it was rare in the center. To top it all towards the end, our waiter came to let us know that there was a gas leak but we were welcome to order dessert to go and he was already wearing his backpack ready to leave. I am in this restaurant once a week on average. I usually have a positive experience, hence my regular attendance. My most recent experience would have been only mildly disappointing, but it ended up being thoroughly annoying. After being served a dish that I determined to be malodorous and inedible, the bartender--one whom I had never seen before--proceeded to argue with me, insisting no fewer than four times that SHE couldn't find anything wrong with it. Like I was making this up? Look, I'm no stranger to the service industry. Even I will say the customer is only "usually" right. But if I say I can't eat something because it smells like ass--you had better not try to assert that I am disingenuous or somehow crazy. If I see the same person behind the bar again I'm out the door. Finally, avoid the Sunday brunch--unbelievably over-priced and no better quality than Denny's. Unbelievable: I walked into the restaurant tonight and yet another bartender was screaming at the top of his lungs about some gay agenda. At first I thought he was cussing out his customers; then I realized it was some animated conversation. It was so loud and so off putting that I simply left. Please note that I am not some anti- gay conservative voter by any stretch. I simply was put off by the snarky attitude. In the past this establishment has had a remarkable bartender, courteous, professional, and all class. My last two visits have been disappointing.
