I have been coming to Vermilion on and off for years now; in fact, at one time I was so regular that I was one of only two customers invited to a private employee shindig. Without a doubt, this is still one of the best restaurants in Alexandria. Hey, if it is good enough for the Bush Twins or President Obama, it is good enough for the rest of us. Of course, the closest thing that I have ever come to V.I.P. seating was standing near the bar's glass washer. It was packed that night and the ladies behind the bar were kind enough to let me hangout in a little alcove designated for cleanup, wine and coffee. Hey, it was near the wine, so it wasn't a total loss. For the most part, I have only dined downstairs in Vermilion's very cool and hip bar and cocktail lounge, the perfect place for a date or happy hour, for it is relaxed and inviting. Besides having a nice selection of premium liqueurs and high end scotches and bourbons, Vermilion provides a perfect selection of appetizers to keep your experience light and lively. I'm very partial to the pimento dip and the mussels, but on our last outing, we opted for the cornmeal hushpuppies. Those little morsels brought back memories of my days spent down in Calabash, N.C...Yum, deep fried goodness. As I have said before, this is the place where you take someone when you want to impress them. Perhaps, it is why it is always booked solid for Valentine's Day. The whole place is adorned in rich woods and romantic red tones that just exudes comfortable elegance. My husband and I celebrated our 4 year anniversary dinner here and I could kick myself for not trying it sooner! The food was phenomenal! The service was absolutely splendid and I just loved the vibe of the restaurant. Vermilion is nestled in on a pretty busy part of King street, but the second you walk in the second door into the main entrance, you are transported to a sleek, sexy, and very luxurious feeling atmosphere. The decor is minimal, rustic and elegant, it actually reminded me of one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans. Lots of exposed brick, wood beams and soft lighting. Love it! We were greeted immediately and whisked upstairs, past a massive bar area in the back of the downstairs seating area. Upstairs I noticed a couple of longer tables, each with their own secluded space, so it looks like this would be a great place to have a group date in the future! Our server greeted us quickly and asked about our dietary restrictions and explained the tasting menu/regular menu options. I ordered a bourbon based drink, my husband got a beer, and within a few minutes of being there we were given bread and an amuse-bouche with compliments from the chef. I ordered the steak and my husband the pork, and we were both extremely happy with our selections. While pondering our dessert options our server realized it was our anniversary and brought us two glasses of champagne and a piece of their blueberry lemon cheesecake on the house. Which is how we ended up with three dessert and I got to eat cake for breakfast the next morning. Haha. Seriously, I loved everything about this experience! Vermillion was kind enough to invite me back with a friend after reading how poor my first experience was. This was a few months back so forgive me for not remembering certain details! We went for brunch instead of dinner and enjoyed an array of dishes with a MUCH more lively waiter that was personable and definitely enhanced the experience, his name escapes me, maybe Tim? We started with the beignets- if they had been just a smidge hotter would have been perfect. The candied apples and fresh cream paired perfectly. I started with a butternut squash and prosciutto soup, absolutely delicious, not too sweet but I recommend the prosciutto be chopped as it was hard (and not elegant) to eat whole. We shared and endive and spinach salad that we added steak to, super delicious and the protein was cooked perfectly. I finished with a beautiful salmon steak on a bed of white beans and vegetables, very hearty and satisfying. It had been on my list for YEARS. I had been reading reviews and following the menu. Guillermo and the attentive staff came enthusiastically! Interesting menu - short, sweet and to the point. A wonderful wine list. Home made pastas. $72 fixed price, $99 with wine pairing. And I ventured in to the fixed price and the wine pairing. Out comes the first dish... and I was mortified. I thought I had made a terrible mistake. In-season BEAUTIFUL chilled pea soup. They made a rhubarb "gremolata", parmesan foam, beautiful squares of ham. And! Um. Umf. Nothing. No flavor. Dead. I was shocked to my core! Had I made a mistake?! OH NO! So Guillermo comes out with a smile from ear to ear. Until he asked... and I hesitated... And I broke his heart. Because it had been an anticlimatic moment for me, accompanied by a prosecco-like Virginia bubbly. On to second course. LUMP CRAB GALORE! Crispy crumb topping with a delicate mustard dressing and roasted asparagus. OH YEAH! Paired with a musty and dry rose. Magic. But THAT was NOTHING. N O T H I N G. Because the al dente pasta with incredible rabbit sausage made my toes curled. Paired with... SANCERRE! OH MY. Yeah. The kitchen, highly tormented by the soup fiasco, sent out the chicken liver mousse "croquettes". HELLO?! Is it you I'm looking for?! Stupid good food. Next course? Perfect duck breast with foie gras, paired with a Shiraz. Of course the kale was for decoration because kale is a four letter word... Vermilion is one of my favorite places in Old Town. I love everything about it - the décor, the food, the drinks, and the service. I've visited alone for happy hour or with a girlfriend for dinner or just drinks and appetizers. I have never been upstairs only downstairs in the bar/lounge and in the dining section. The dark wood and low-lighting provides Vermilion with an intimate, yet welcoming, feel. They have one of the best happy hours - discounted wine, beer, cocktails, and appetizers. I've sat at the bar or on the couches in the lounge area, which I love. The bar is small, but there are high tables, plus the couches. The bartender, whose name I do not remember, is awesome. He is friendly and the seasonal cocktails he makes are delicious. This season, I am enjoying the elderflower one. The bar menu is different from the restaurant menu. From the bar menu, I've had the roasted olives (though those are also on the restaurant menu), the buffalo chicken titans, and the hush puppies. The olives are great and served warm with pita bread, which is good for dipping in the oil. The chicken titans are my favorite though - spicy chicken in a crisp shell, like a spring roll. I've only had hush puppies here, and found them addictively crisp outside, yet soft inside. I've eaten dinner here once, and the service is what you would expect of a high-end restaurant, which I find rare, unless dining at such a place. Extremely professional, knowledgeable about the menu, and proper setting, placement, and clearing of dinnerware and dishes, along with just the right amount of attentiveness. Dinner was chilled English pea soup with wild nettle and ricotta tortelloni, shared between two people. Our amuse-bouche was a roasted red pepper wrapped around goat cheese, and it was just as good as it sounds. I am not a fan of pea soup, though this was good, but I only had a few bites (my friend insisted on sharing). The shrimp and peas in the middle added a nice texture to the vibrant green starter. The wild nettle and ricotta tortelloni came with three or four tortellonis, well-filled with the flavorful, creamy ricotta. This dish included parmesan crisps and pea shoots, two of my favorite accompaniments ever, and they proved just as tasty as always. The lemon parmesan foam was frothy and creamy enough that I thought it might be butter, but very mild to the taste. Bread served before the meal was good, though not outstanding, and I preferred the crescent rolls to the focaccia. Vermilion is definitely a restaurant that I will continue to frequent. read more

Went to Vermilion for a drink and brunch on Saturday around 2pm. It was clear that the lunch/brunch rush had long passed so the restaurant was nice and quiet. We took a corner seat and each ordered a drink. It was definitely pretty fairly priced, especially for Virginia prices. The apricot biscuits with fresh butter at the start were to die for! I wish they gave us more than 2. We weren't starving so we shared a starter and a lunch sandwich. We went with the artichoke and greens dip and the spicy grilled chicken sandwich. Both were awesome! The artichoke and greens dip was not at all what we expected, it was a much more healthy take but we loved it and the toasts that it came with were perfect. The spicy grilled chicken had a nice kick but was not overwhelming and the goat cheese paired perfectly. My drink was just okay, but they have a lot of fun specials and a really cute ambiance. Our service was awesome, all we did was mention that we would be sharing the sandwich and it came divided on two separate plates from the kitchen, I think that was a great touch. Fantastic experience. This was my second time eating dinner at Vermilion (the first was when Tony Chittum was still leading the kitchen) and my husband and I were intrigued by last night's tasting menu and wanted to see if the new Chef, William Morris, was upholding the high standards of the restaurant. We were not disappointed on either front. As I mentioned, we chose the tasting menu with the wine pairings. The wait staff & Sommelier were incredibly flexible, too, when my husband noted that he wasn't a fan of dessert wine - no problem, they just gave my husband a little more wine for all the other pairings and just a taste of the dessert wine at the end (I opted for regular pours of the pairings, about a 1/2 glass of wine each, and the pours were generous). They brought out bread and an amuse bouche, which was a salmon with dill. Yum! The bread was also delicious - I picked up one piece and thought to myself "this looks like a potato chip baked on top" and I was right - it was a potato bread. Very cool. For our first course, we had the Path Valley Beet & Apple Salad, paired with a 2012 Blanc de Cabernet. The salad was incredibly fresh, and the apples, ricotta, & beets were incredibly flavorful and seasonal. The wine was terrific. We'd never had a Cabernet Blanc before and we'll definitely be looking for it in the store. Second course was a roasted monkfish with a potato chive broth and a surprising wine pairing - a Cotes du Rhone. I was surprised, but this was actually a great pairing because the fish was so meaty. I wanted to lick the bowl and lap up every last bit of the potato-chive broth. Third course was a center-cut striploin cooked to a beautiful medium rare (they asked how we wanted it prepared) paired with one of the best red wines I've had in a long time - an Austin Hope Troublemaker blend from Paso Robles. This was the first time I'd ever had this wine but the 2nd time I'd heard about it and it definitely lived up to the hype - another wine I'll be looking for in the store. The squash puree that accompanied the steak was delicious. For dessert, they served a ricotta-poppy seed fritter with buttermilk sorbet paired with a Moscato from Italy. The fritter was fried to a gorgeous golden brown and the sorbet had a slight lemon hint to it. Refreshing but yet filling at the same time. Service was excellent throughout the night - each server and the Sommelier described each course and each wine as they were brought to us, but the service was never hovering or overbearing. Overall, a great experience, and I'll be keeping Vermillion in my rotation for fine dining! So glad that the new Chef seems to be as great as the last. read more

My wife and I ate at Vermilion a few weeks ago and got a very good meal, generous portions and great service. And we gave Vermilion a great review. Unfortunately our latest experience wasn't nearly as consistently good, memorable but not good. The service was still great, noise level was adequate but, unfortunately, we got a terrible bottle of wine which should have been sent back immediately but our friends insisted on ordering something they knew from South America. I guess vinegar substitutes for wine in South America. It was undrinkable for me and later my wife asked what I thought of it.....I reminded her I switched to beer immediately. Our/my bad for not speaking up even if it embarassed our friends. About 1 in every 75-100 bottles is bad so don't hesitate to send it back. You'll be doing everyone a favor. Strike two were some of the portion sizes. The squash soup appetizer was a thimble full of squash soup and perhaps somewhere there was were evidence of beets passing through. Not a keeper if you are looking for an appropriate fall menu. Pear salad was excellent and generous by the new mini size standards. Mains were appropriate and tasty, not epic but tasty. Swordfish, braised pork ravioli are worth a try. Deserts, especially the strudels, were very good as they were on our previous visit. Our friends Bavarian was also on the incredible shrinking size although he quickly devoured it. Maybe to wash down the wine. French press coffee was excellent. I really want Vermilion to succeed but when I'm spending $200+ for the two of us on a very small sampling of items, no portion size pun intended, you can't leave us thinking we lost the restaurant lottery by just walking in. read more

In a nutshell: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Food: 3/5 Went here with a friend for lunch and took advantage of their restaurant week special, even though it was a tough choice since the brunch menu seemed pretty appealing too. We got the "Spring in Bolivia" and "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" drinks, and I really liked the latter. It had a strong (but wonderfully complementary) coffee taste that was unique and enjoyable. For my first course I got the yogurt with granola and dried fruit, which gave me pause less than one bite in as I lifted my spoon only to find a hair (that could not have been my own) cemented pretty firmly in there. Instant eww factor - never a good way to start a meal eh?! I feel like I don't sound grossed out enough by this (normally I would be), and I'm honestly kind of surprised I wasn't more bothered by it...but I think it's because I had yet to actually start eating anything and, moreover, because of how genuinely apologetic the staff was and how quick they were to bring me a replacement. Anyway, next it was tiime for the [hopefully issue-free] main course! I really struggled to choose between the three options as all sounded delectable (each had at least one main ingredient I love). Eventually I went with the chicken and grits offering that came with fried eggs because - *cue music* - theeeeese are a few of my faaaavorite things! The eggs were good/pretty standard and the chicken was fine too. The grits were the biggest bummer because the texture was sooooo on point but they were just toooo damn salty! I'm not one to leave food on a plate uneaten (ESPECIALLY when that food is grits, let's be real) but after a while I just couldn't keep trying anymore. For the final (and often most exciting) course, I chose the oreo mousse dessert that sounded heavenly but didn't live up to expectations (at least not for me - I think my friend really liked it). The texture sort of threw me off, and I wasn't too fond of the way it tasted either, though I can't put my finger on why exactly (not chocolate-y enough and a bit chalky perhaps?). As you've probably gathered by now, my experience with the taste/quality of the food was subpar but the ambiance was nice and the staff was very pleasant, so I would be willing to give the food another shot (maybe brunch one weekend). I was a little surprised that they didn't give me a discount or something small on the house for the initial mishap with the hair-in-yogurt situation, as that's pretty customary and would have certainly left a better impression, but overall still a good experience. read more

Remains my favorite restaurant experience in Old Town. Changing seasonal menus make for an exciting experience from start to finish. Cocktail and wine menus give an added layer of thoughtfulness for guests. Front of house staff are decently helpful on answering questions about menu items, but follow your own instincts on whether you will like something or not. My wife and I always try each other's dishes, and it seems like there is always one dish we disagree on. Fortunately, the person who ordered it actually got what they were hoping for! My husband and I had brunch here not too long ago and our experience didn't live up to the hype. For years, I've read all kinds of great reviews and couldn't wait to try this place. Alas, it was only ok. The hushpuppies are definitely the best thing we ordered. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone. The pork belly/egg/cheese sandwich was ok. The sandwich fell apart immediately due to the runny egg soaking the brioche and beyond the maple glaze, there wasn't much flavor. I recall there being a red pepper jam, which gave the sandwich some heat, but that is about it. I have heard a lot about Vermillion and I have been wanting to come and here comes the restaurant week! In abundance of restaurants in the area, how would one pick a restaurant over another? It could be atmosphere, food, service or concept. This restaurant scored all these aspects! I am most impressed by the dishes (well that's what restaurants are supposed, right?). I had chilled corn soup which had so many different flavor in one dish: sweetness of corn, sourness from sour cream and heat from chili oil. Then I never enjoyed mushroom as a main dish until today. Trumpet mushroom with potato side dish was one of the most unique dishes. I enjoyed chef's creativity and personality in dishes today. We went here the other day and were much impressed by the the fantastic food and stellar service. We had been here before, but the chef now is far superior and the food is exquisite. Great meal. I chose the more obscure portions on the fixed price menu at Restaurant week. 4 courses. The first course was like a beet tart (galette). The beets were good, I do wish they were seasoned a bit better and the Swiss chard in the dish had more presence. Marscapone and goat cheese as a garnish. Good complement. Second course carmelized Brussels sprouts, nicely browned, plentiful, very nicely seasoned. Sea salted, olive oil, honey and chili added a nice flavor. Third course of short rib over fingerling potatoes. Small portion of meat with a gravy. Flavorful but didn't blow me away. Wished there was more gravy for the 7 finger potatoes. Tender. Cooked well. Could have used an alternate flavor. Had a few cranberries that gave the dish some interesting complement. Final course for dessert was a pistachio Bavarian. Dried meringue and a bit of crumbled pistachios. Black figs soaked in red wine. Dollop of ice cream on the side. Interesting, the Bavarian was a lovely green color. Inside had a nice filling. The bar side is first come first serve. The atmosphere is colonial meets speakeasy with dim lighting and mostly communal seating. Great spot for late night drinks. My vesper was smooth and well crafted. We ordered the gnocchi and the bolognese. Being from Italy I have experienced fantastic pasta. This was the best. We were in the area for an anniversary getaway weekend and I made reservations ahead of our trip based on Yelp reviews. We were greeted with happy anniversary wishes when we arrived and were seated at a quiet table upstairs. Complimentary glasses of sparkling wine were brought over while we looked over the menu. We shared roasted oysters as an appetizer. Good, but we still prefer raw oysters - just a preference thing. My husband ordered the trout and I had steak. Both were delicious, perfectly cooked and we couldn't decide which we liked more. The bottle of Pinot Noir that we shared was very good. Let's start with stating the fact that my review is based off of my restaurant week experience. I had the hush puppies, lamb sandwich, olive oil cake, and apple cider donuts. The hush puppies were pretty good, but I think it's hard to mess those up. The lamb sandwich - very soggy from the juices and oil from the meat. The lamb itself did not have much flavor. The olive oil cake was not really sweet and just didn't hit the spot for me. Similar case for the donuts. They were really crispy, which was unexpected, and not very sweet. We've been twice now and it was excellent both times. The atmosphere is lovely, and it was very cozy on a dreary December evening. The food is fantastic--I was eating the onion jam with a fork when we ran out of the milk bread, and I could have eaten an entire loaf of anchovy toast. We've had a mixed bag with the mains; the pasta is great. I've had the tortellacci and the casoncelli and both were Al dente, flavorful, and had been cooked in the right amount of salted water (it makes a difference!). My partner had the gnocchi and said it just needed something extra, but it was still good! Our friend had the suckling pig and said it was phenomenal. I also saw reviews on here mentioning issues with service but we were well taken care of by Zach both times. No complaints! My husband and I went last night for our 20th anniversary and everything from drinks, to food, their dessert, and the service was excellent. Chad was our waiter and he was very nice and made the perfect food suggestions. My glass was never empty and the food was perfectly timed from finishing one dish and receiving another. I had the ricotta gnocchi which tasted like little puffs from heaven and my husband had the pork dish, equally mouth watering. Their flourless chocolate cake was one of the best I have ever tasted. The food was wonderful, the service was as good as it can be. For brunch on a Saturday this place was egregiously understaffed, while it wasn't super busy, a table of 6 shouldn't derail the service in the rest of the restaurant. We had the host waiting on our table (of two) and it appeared that the manager/host/bartender were attempting to compensate for the lack of servers on staff that's day (1). I came to Vermilion quickly for a happy hour to reconnect with friends. It was surprisingly empty and easy to find a seat on a Thursday afternoon. They have a pretty good happy hour selection with lots of great tasting cocktails. I honestly don't have anything bad to say about this venue. My only complaint is that I didn't spend enough time here. I was in and out in maybe 45 minutes since I had another activity pretty soon afterward, but I definitely want to try this place again and try out their highly recommended hush puppies. read more

Went here for happy hour with a coworker. There's no information on their website regarding happy hour (besides the fact that they have it) but we decided to check it out on the way to an event. We walked in and found the bar in the back and sat down. There was one other customer at the bar. The bartender greeted us and showed us the HH menu. There's a decent selection of drinks but only 4 apps. It took a while for the bartender to come back to ask what we wanted and even longer to get our apps. The mojito was good. The hushpuppies weren't the best I've had but they came with several sauces (a mustard- type, ranch-type, and sriracha mayo-like one). Overall, HH was okay; I probably would come just for drinks. Service was okay; everything seemed to take awhile, even waiting for them to pick up our check with the credit card. More people filtered in while we were there so it seems like people do enjoy the HH there. read more

Gene & I try and ride a tandem as often as possible, needless to say I was thrilled to find bike parking on site! I'd booked a reservation with a "Ms./Mrs. Cleo"(sp? I may have misunderstood her - it was noisy in background) for 8:00 pm and upon arrival were warmly greeted once I'd secured the bike and my new helmet. For those unaware the word "Vermilion" has for centuries been regarded "the color of blood", thus the color of life. I sort of expected a gorier decor but wasn't at all put off by the lovely ambience. And what a vibrantly alive menu teeming with life and pangs of color & flavor to match!!! Pork Lion? You haven't lived until you've eaten this. Roasted garlic soup? More like "elixir of the Gods"! Magnificent. The waitstaff, while one in particular was perhaps a touch "over-fragranced" (one spritz fella, one spritz - you know who you are), were as delightful and accommodating as anyone could reasonably want for. I made the mistake of assuming the after dinner espresso would offset the heaviness of that delicious Nutella Cheesecake, but I was wrong. Gene peddled is all the way back to Groveton like a champion. - Not like she couldn't use the exercise - This was such a delightful eatery and one we'll be peddling back to soon! Love it love it love it. If I had to give critique... I didn't like the shoe-feel on their flooring. Big deal. Not their fault. I'll wear my other sneakers next time. A+ read more

The first impression was the hostess greeting us in her leggings and workout shirt. Not a good impression. We were seated upstairs, which was very nice. The winter salad was super tasty. The butternut squash schnitzel was delicious. The pasta triangulo was best in class but portion size could have been doubled as my husband left hungry. This was our first visit and it was quite good, but not great. Reasons: food was tasty in some dishes, and not tasty in some others. The service was nice, but we've been waiting for the main course (Octopus) for a very long time and it was the most disappointing dish of all. And the value wasn't good either. Vermilion did not disappoint! One of my best friends brought my fiancée and I here about a week ago and we are still raving about it. We had a beautiful table upstairs outlooking Alexandria. Service was impeccable, the manager Spenser visited our table on more than one occasion, and the staff was all very friendly and welcoming. To start our meal we had a round of crisp rose paired with an assortment of apps - salmon tartare, grilled octopus, and a salad. We were also brought out house made bread which was delicious as well. For the second courses we all had a duck chef special, which was to die for! The duck was so tender, and it was complimented with a carrot purée, micro greens, and beets. For drinks we all went with cocktails, and they were poured to perfection. For the main course we went with a bottle of red wine that our server recommended for us, it paired perfectly with all of our entrees. Dessert was mouth watering as well! This was simply one of the best meals I've ever had - from the service to the execution of the meal. Ask for Kenny, we loved him, you won't regret it! Highly recommend to anyone in the area that it looking for a top notch dining experience. You cannot go wrong with Vermilion! read more
