Last Sunday, my husband and I had lunch at Cooper Mill, and it was a phenomenal experience from start to finish. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, with warm, inviting décor and a quiet location just off the main drag--something we actually appreciated because it made for a more relaxed, charming experience. We lived in Old Town about 25 years ago, and it was amazing to see how much the area has grown. We started with the cast iron meatballs, and they were outstanding. The meatballs were tender and generously portioned, and the sauce was so good we didn't want to leave a drop behind. For lunch, we split the turkey club, which turned out to be the perfect choice because it was enormous! Every ingredient tasted incredibly fresh, but the real star was the warm sesame-seed bread--light, fresh, and unlike any sandwich bread we've had before. The service was exceptional -- friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A friend of my husband's, Jesse (possibly a manager? The bottom line: loud, pricey, but not un-tasty pizza. Went on a Friday night and it was unpleasantly loud upstairs. We had a cool view of a thunderstorm over the river and our server Oscar was nice, but it didn't quite make up for the loud group and ok pizza. This was my first time checking out this restaurant. I liked the fact that you could order pizza by the slice, but unfortunately the piece I received came out cold. Indicating that it had been cooked a while ago. I also ordered the eggplant Parmesan appetizer. The dish was really cheesy, however it was way over salted. The restaurant only offered one mocktail option, which is a shocker especially since we are in the middle of dry January. I'll have to go back another day and have a proper meal to see if this one visit was just a fluke. read more

My buddy David and I stopped into Cooper Mill for some pizza, and this place did not disappoint! The rustic vibe of the brick building gives it a great Old Town feel, and the moment you walk in you're hit with the smell of fresh pizza. I ordered a slice of the daily special and a Meatball Zepp, and both were excellent. The slice had a crisp crust with just the right amount of chew, minimal flop, and that perfect cheese stretch you want in a good pizza. The Meatball Zepp was packed, heavy, and seriously filling--the meatballs were juicy and flavorful, and it all came together beautifully. Overall, this place is a winner. Great atmosphere, delicious pizza, and plenty of reasons to come back. I'll definitely be returning to work my way through the rest of the menu. read more

This was a fairly cool old town waterfront pizza spot. On the outside it looks like an old warehouse but on the inside it's a clean cut modernized space with wooden decor, a long bar at the entrance, and several sets of smaller tables throughout the space. There's also a second floor which is used as their event space. It was a bit quiet during lunch time on this day which worked out as my small group had plenty of choices for seating. Service was excellent our waiter was very attentive and our food items came out in an expedited manner. Their menu features apps like cast iron meatballs, garlic knots, and eggplant parm, several different salad options, 6 different sub options, and of course a plethora of red and white sauce pizza options (by the slice or whole pies) with plenty of add-ons regarding toppings and glazes. The wine menu is also pretty expansive with some very nice selections. I ended up ordering the chicken caesar sub ($18) and the vanilla bean brûlée cheesecake ($9). The chicken sub was delicious the flavor of the bread and the Caesar dressing that came with it were the highlights, fresh toppings, my only complaint would have been a bit more chicken added to the sandwich. The cheesecake was exceptional as well despite being a bit heavy on the cream topping but that was probably more for presentation purposes. Overall a positive lunch experience, I'll definitely be returning to try out a few of their pizza options. read more

I had heard about Cooper Mill at the end of Duke Street in old town. We did not have reservations and were able to get seated for a late lunch. Our waitress didn't seemed thrilled to be at work. We ordered two Zep's, their specialty sandwiches. The first sandwich came out and the second didn't show up. We inquired about the status of the order and were told it would be coming. Time passed and we spoke to a manager and still no sandwich. About 15 minutes or a little longer later the second sandwich arrived with an apology. The manager said she would take the item off of the bill. The Zep was excellent, it was very tasty and filling. I would definitely order it again. I must say had it not been for the underwhelming service, I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, as well as the food. Came here while on a business trip for happy hour. The deals were very good. We tried the garlic knot sliders and Peperoncino dip. The sliders were very oily and too heavy on the garlic for my taste, but the meatball inside was good. The dip was amazing. I would go back just for the dip. This was my second visit to Cooper Mill. I mainly went because of the chopped Italian salad. This salad is so yummy. There is something about the salad that makes it so delicious. The full size portion is enough for two people. I also ordered two slices with hot honey. The slices were good, but I did not taste the hot honey. We got the risenbrezel & sfincinone (w/added red onion and sriracha bleu drizzle on the side) So... we realized we should have ordered the slice instead of the whole pie because 1 slice filled us up right after sharing (and still bringing home 1/4 leftover) giant pretzel A tip we would like to share is to ask for a new set of plates as the pretzel did contain quite a bit of salt we dusted off... and ended up on our slice of pizza when we ate it. I am more of a cheese than sauce person, but did feel this pizza needed a bit more sauce to balance out the dough. The sriracha bleu was a nice balance of both and had more of a kick than we thought it would. Cooper Mill was exactly what we needed on a freezing cold night. The warm, cozy vibe made it the perfect spot to escape the chill. It just felt inviting from the moment we walked in. The food was incredible. We kicked things off with the cheesy garlic bread, which came out perfectly crisp on the edges but soft and gooey in the middle, with just the right amount of garlic and cheese. It was pure comfort food. Then we shared the hot honey pizza pie, and wow. They say it serves four, but the two of us almost finished it ourselves (even after devouring the garlic bread). I also had an Old Fashioned, and it was spot on--smooth and well-balanced, just the way I like it. Still in soft opening, but seems like it's going to be a solid addition to the area! Enjoyed the Zepps, which are basically sandwiches made from pizza dough. The PeppZepp amounted to an open-faced pepperoni calzone, which sounds like a pizza, but the dough for the Zepps is thicker than just folding a slice of pizza. Not sure how to describe it really, just go and try one! Garlic Knots were super garlickly, in the good way (real garlic not powdered) and the sauce had just a touch of zip to it. The surprising standout was the Spicy Roasted Corn Salad; normally those are mostly greens with a little bit of corn, at Cooper Mill it was basically all corn, with the other ingredients bringing flavor but not distracting from the corn. Definitely one we'll get again! Service was good, friendly and quick enough (but not rushed), although in any soft opening YMMV. First floor was all that was open when we were there, but we looked upstairs at the bar and lounge there, and holy smokes is it beautiful! I visited the restaurant on Sunday evening, I sat near the kitchen and noticed the cooks only wore one glove. I saw one of the guys pick a slice of pizza up and sprinkle cheese with the had that did not have glove on it. Why would you touch someone's food with your hands. That is not sanitary at all. I've been to Cooper Mill at least 10 times, hoping the experience would improve, but it's always the same story. The upstairs space is never open to regular guests--it's supposedly reserved for private parties, but it's always empty. When you ask, the staff is short and unhelpful, just saying "it's closed" with no further explanation. They also don't offer any gluten-free options, which is really surprising in an area like Old Town. It's frustrating to see a place so unwilling to be accommodating--whether it's seating or dietary needs. At this point, it feels like they just don't want people's business. There are plenty of great spots nearby that actually want customers. I'm officially done giving this one more chances. read more

We started with drinks, non-alcoholic beer for my wife and a $2 Off the Rails (whiskey + Coke) for me. Being a NJ native I was excited to try a new Pizza by the slice shop. But Pizza by the slice here is just a slice of one their normal sized pizzas. You'd expect it to compare to other slice shops in portion if you charge $6-$8 per slice but that's not the case. I ordered the hot honey (not hot), the special, and roman (was barely warm) slices. The ambiance was stunning and service was great, but the taste and value just missed. I recommend the operators here check out Wise Guys or We The Pizza for reference. TLDR: Pizza is overpriced. We have been so excited for this to finally open and visited last night... it did not disappoint in the least, in fact, I think we've found one of our new favorite local spots! There were some reviews about the pizza having burnt edges and overpriced. That is 100% not true. 1 - you can choose the crust you would like (Sicilian or regular) so it's really on you. We tried both and really liked both. 2 - price is extremely fair for this area. If you want to try a bunch and not commit to a whole pie do the $6 slice to try them all! Delicious!! We went for happy hour and I had a Amalfi Spritz and a great montepulciano wine. We also tried the dip, half Antipasto Zepp (pizza sandwich) and the garlic knot meatball sliders. In my eyes the sliders were the winner! Everything was good but those were craveable! The flavors were perfect, the meat blend was on point, the sauce was perfect, and the garlic shined! We topped it all off with lemon mascarpone cake! I could see coming here in the summer and enjoying the spritz, and pasta salad, and the lemon mascarpone cake! Truly though, this is all seasons bar and restaurant! The architecture makes us the perfect lodge environment but in the summer the spring and outdoor space on the roof is gonna be clutch. Cooper Mill is a former mill site, that encompasses a market, a tavern, and an event venue space, all in one; the building is described as being one of OT's last waterfront warehouses. They're currently in their soft opening stage, offering a breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in addition to a beverage menu. We stopped by for an early dinner, and we tried some of their pizzas, which we thought were just aight. It was a bit overcooked, making the crust slightly burnt and a bit chewy. Cooper Mill is actually part of the Landini restaurant group, which explained why we were disappointed with the service and the food. There are two floors, and we were seated in the main area. What a great new place! The vibe was really cool and cozy from the minute you walked in and almost every table was full. The set up and decor really made it fit Old Town. The food was phenomenal! We got a pepperoni pizza and unsure if we should add meatballs to it but were glad we did because for an extra $6, it felt like we were getting a steal with the amount of meat on the pizza considering how big the pie was. We couldn't finish it ourselves and ended up taking a few slices home. My partner said the beer selection was pretty impressive as well. The service was great too! I was so excited for this new restaurant in Alexandria. Unfortunately, we were all disappointed in our experience. Our group of 4 was sat at a giant table made for 6 and we couldn't even hear each other. They reseated us which I was grateful for. However, the food was disappointing. Our appetizer never came out and the server admitted he got the timing of the meal mixed up. So then our entrees and drinks came out but the "garlic knot" sandwich has no garlic or butter or flavoring on it. Beware that it is simply a roll. The service was very slow, even to get us wine and pizza slices that were obviously quite old and just heated up for a minute. On a Sunday night at 6:30, 3/4 full, it took 25 minutes to get drinks and at least that long to find our server to get the check. I ordered white pizza, which was at least an hour old, small, thin, on a cheap paper plate, with crust like cardboard and barely lukewarm. You'd get better pizza at any mall. It's very loud room, and at one point someone turned a tv up and we couldn't hear each other. Total for me was almost $34 for two slices of bad pizza and one drink plus tip. I've been watching the build of Cooper Mill for some time, and I've been super excited to finally dine here. The restaurant and bar were packed, first come, first serve. The Old Fashioned was great! The ambiance as a whole is perfect. Great dim lighting in the evening, and the volume isn't too loud. The bathrooms are clean. The pepperoncini dip was incredible! Honestly, I want to meet the person who invented that. The garlic knots were great as well! I wasn't impressed with the eggplant parm, but it wasn't the worst. The Greek salad we received was also great. Although, we ordered the Italian. I do wish they had more options, food-wise, but I would definitely come back! No complaints. Update: I dined here again and ordered the Italian, again. Only to be presented with a salad that was missing several main ingredients. No olives, pepperoni, salami, soppressata,red onion ,or mozz. So essentially, I had lettuce and tomatoes. When I complained, I was told "that is the chopped Italian. After explaining that it was missing ALL of the ingredients, olives and pepperoni were then brought over to me in little cups. More of a, "make your own salad" at this point. Stopped by for Happy Hour and had a fairly decent experience. It was 4 o'clock and we sat at the bar and were handed a menu. Note - I had to specifically ask for the happy hour menu. I was delighted to see so many offerings, so I ordered the Cowabunga. Tasty. Then I ordered another rum beverage that was offered on the Happy Hour menu, paired with a pepperoncini dip. Delicious. I was visibly happy and grinning. Then came the bill. While I do enjoy a good happy hour stint with my buddies, I'm not a fan of drinks on the "Happy Hour" menu costing $16 a piece. Nothing happy about that. Granted, my own mistake for not looking a bit closer at the Happy Hour menu, but I certainly wouldn't expect $16 for a drink. That's prime-time prices, brother! I do not live in the area but visiting family nearby cooper mill. It's a beautiful building & very impressive. I have eaten there a few times for happy hour & lunch. The pizza is very good & also the salad with shrimp ...the dressing with that salad is amazing. My issue with the restaurant is that the service is sketchy. When at lunch a friend wanted to just look at the upstairs & was very rudely told it was closed & to please leave the area. Very unprofessional & unnecessary to be so rude. She just wanted to see it. Had another experience & was disappointed in the service & I was only one at the bar. Just seems odd to have such a beautiful restaurant & not have good dining experience due service..I'm not sure I'll return. read more
