I love the idea of this place. Art and alcohol! They cater to local artists, which is lovely. They also have quite eclectic offerings, both in the visual and audio areas. I've seen a huge stuffed bear with crepe paper blood, light installations, things that move, things that make noise... That being said, alcohol and art can also offer a new set of challenges. I've been in groups that were sternly reprimanded for "getting too close" to displays. Without barriers and when the displays are right in the middle of the room, I think this widely varies from person to person. Yelling at patrons isn't ever a good idea. I like good ole Vermillion. You walk past it and you'd just assume it was a little room for your typical Capitol Hill-ites to display their misunderstood art work. BUT GUESS WHAT, there's a cute little bar in the back and the art work is actually pretty nice to look at [especially after a few glasses of their happy hour boxed wine]. I've been here a handful of times but only remember a few. One of the first times, I was way too intoxicated and asked a complete stranger who was walking past our table, "Do you get naked?" and apparently he just kept walking. Another time we went and there was a group of people sitting in a circle and playing various musical instruments and it WAS AWESOME. It totally didn't feel like we were on 'the hill'. They have food too, but I haven't tried it. But I think it's actual food instead of just nuts and a Doritos chip(!). Yes, sometimes it has a weird smell that I think resembles damp hay, but after a few drinks you have more important things to think about, like if that person over there gets naked. The art. I loved the art. There were several very different styles of art, some of which were "my kind of thing" and some that I'm sure that certain others would love. I love that they had painted pieces, different items put together to make a piece of art, a big fish hanging with a movie being played on its side, and some other kinds of art. I love variety and, at least right now, Vermillion definitely provides that! The section with tables and the bar was darker and swanky. Just felt cool to hang out in somehow. I love the brick wall, the mirrors, the windows. I guess I enjoy some strange things. Anyway. I was there for a going-away party and there were some nice munchies available (veggies, hummus, breads, meats, cheese) and drinks were at HH prices. I had a glass of the house red (wine) and it was alright (and I think only $3?)... at the very least it got me feeling warmer for when we took off into the cold night to go find some food on Broadway. I rather enjoyed my visit to Vermillion, and I recommend stopping by during HH to check out the art while perhaps enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or one of their non-alcoholic options. This place is amazing. This is a sustainable restaurant using only local ingredients that are as fresh as possible. The wine list is very good. I had fresh salmonthat was cooked perfectly, just rare in the middle. My husband's steak was perfectly cooked as well. It was my birthday so they brought me a chocolate cupcake with a candle. It's just a hole in the wall that puts local "artists" on the wall, has a bar that looks like it might serve some munchies, and plays random "musician" spinning some beats. Sometimes the music is good and others the guy doesn't work with the beats. The art that they show are over priced for the venue. The bartender was AWESOME!! Very stiff cheap drinks and he was quick with the size of our group (about 40!) and stayed on top of it all night long. Vermillion is awesome for so many reasons. Maybe it's the ever-rotating gallery in the front, or maybe it's the bar that was re-purposed from the alleys at Leilani Lanes, or the "Grease Machine" jukebox. Martin and Diana (the owners) are wonderful, you can tell they've put a lot of energy into this place. The house wine is satisfactory, which means I don't have to look at the menu, and I LOVE that. $5 per glass, only $3 during happy hour, yay wine! Its hard to call Vermillion a wine bar, with Local Vine (wonderful wine flights) right around the corner. Its a long art space in the front with a small bar in the back. The strong cigarette odor inside the small, but cavernous bar takes away from any kind of wine tasting experience. Add to that that this place has just a handful of mediocre wines on offer and some have been sitting in their bottle too long, and you get the idea that this is most definitely NOT a wine bar. Its a bar that serves wine. Most of the regular patrons knew what the place was about and were drinking cocktails and beer. So, its time to rethink that whole "wine bar" category for this establishment. I'm afraid its a misnomer. On the other hand, Vermillion has good local Capital Hill flavor, the bar has a warehouse meets old speakeasy vibe, and if you can handle the cigarette odor, you get a generous boozy pour of wine. While there is an art gallery in the front, on an early Saturday night when we stopped by the gallery portion was poorly lit, making viewing near difficult without a flashlight. That's too bad, because hanging some stronger lighting over the artwork would have lent itself to checking out what looked to be an interesting exhibit, while maintaining the dark, mysterious clubby ambiance. This is not, as other Yelpers have suggested, a bougie or swank local. Its a locals only destination that's fairly raw around the edges. I'm hesitant to write anything about Vermillion because it's the kind of place I'd like to keep to myself. How often can you find an art gallery slash café with a very chill vibe? On Capitol Hill? That has great wine? Our server was great. He was well versed on the cheese and meat pairings, and made some recommendations based on the tastes of our table members. The mac'n'cheese sounds great, but we opted to pass for the evening. I had a tasty glass of tempranillo at a reasonable price. Aside from the ability to walk around with a glass of wine and view the artwork, it was nice to be able to carry on a conversation without screaming at the top of my lungs. I'm torn here, three or four? It feels mean to give three stars for a small business who I want to support and I am a fan, so I went with 4. Art gallery is cool, space overall is fun and I get the general idea. The downside is there is more than a little confusion on how/when you'll get food/drinks and they're reasonably priced but by no means 'cheap' However, the quality is definitely there for the food at the least. I opted for the meat and cheese plate - chef's choice- which took about 20 minutes to come out (que? there were no other customers) but the selection was divine. The quality of each ingredient was really top notch. I'd have that again in a heartbeat. We followed with the Mac and Cheese (sound familiar? Yes, I was there with the stunning Vanessa H) which I thought was quite good. Being a mac and cheese expert- I'm actually writing a book "From Kraft to Beechers: Seattle's Mac and Cheese Experience"- I would say this is definitely a 'must try' on the list. My drinks - again same as lovely VH- were good but not write home about it good, but not for lack of trying. Hidden gem, indeed. Were it not for noticing their little white street sign, with even little-er red letters, I'm not sure I would have realized this was Vermillion. It gives almost no indication there is a bar here from the outside. Lovely art gallery space in front, with some very interesting peices. It opens up to the bar and lounge area in the back. Ample seating, and a fairly dark interior give this area a real 'loungy' feel. The bartenders were awesome. Arriving early, we found them prepping up the treat plates of meats, cheeses and veggies for Michelle's event. For dinner, I decided to try the Pot Roast stew. God, it was fabulous. Perfectly tender meat and veggies in a rich, gravy-esque stew base. Instant thoughts of mom's homemade cooking. I snagged a taste of Betsy's macaroni and cheese. It was pretty good, but more 'Alfredo' than what would have made it have the same "mom's cooking" feel that the stew had. The sampling of veggies, meats and cheeses laid out for the Yelp event were all just fabulous. I can't recall the name of the bottle of wine I shared with Betsy and Jodi, and the tawny port I had after dinner wasn't labeled on the menu I ordered from, but both were enjoyable and at very reasonable prices even without the all night HH prices we enjoyed tonight. Board games cover some shelves in the far corner of the lounge. A rousing round of Scrabble was enjoyed by Bert, Jodi, Betsy and I while we enjoyed dinner and waited for the event to kick off. The top scoring word of the game was had by Bert...with the word "Yelp". Perfect. The event itself was just great. Wow. I probably never would have noticed this unobtrusively fantastic place unless the lovely Michelle B hosted her going away party here on Wednesday night! I was immediately struck by the simple beauty of the space, which has a small art gallery in front and an intimate bar with about 15 tables in back. The bar has utilized found objects from Leilani Lanes (my old karaoke fave!!! RIP) to create a uniquely beautiful ambiance. Lighting is just about perfect, though for larger groups it can be a bit crowded, since there's not a lot of standing room. This led me to ask the lovely Sarah K to join me for a cigarette outside. When my boy Adam C showed up, he yanked said cancer stick out of my hand and scolded me. Oh well, he's like a big bro to me and I need to quit before the rock and roll marathon training begins! The staff had prepared a lovely salumi plate and a cheese try that was to die for, featuring the illustrious humboldt fog. I'm not supposed to eat cheese per digestive issues, but DAMN I had to sneak a bite. There were veggies aplenty for those of us watching our girlish figures, which was much appreciated. I got my diet cokes for free- BONUS! Staff was helpful and friendly. Yelpers were hot and sexy! I even ordered girl scout cookies from the lovely Riss' daughter! Naurry called me out on needing more malpractice insurance coverage, and Ian was rad as always with his springy hairs. FUN FUN! I met some non-yelp friends at the Little Red Hen afterwards but was sad to leave. It was great to chat with beautiful depeche mode fan Elsa and to meet some new yelpers too! What can I say? I really love the Vermillion. Granted, it took a while to grow on me, but the more I visit the more I find to enjoy. Im instantly charmed by the art gallery up front. They make great use of that space and everything I've seen displayed has been lovely in some way or another. Walking through their front gallery is always relaxed and gives you something pretty to look/ponder over while making your way to the back bar. So the bar? It's low key and staffed with awesome people. Drinks are strong and cheap, especially compared to other joints on the street. Daily specials abound and the bartender is willing to make something up on the spot for you if you'd like as well. I've never not been pleased with what i've gotten here -- even if it was just a shot of whiskey & a can of Rainier. I've yet to actually nosh here -- but with mac & cheese and simple cheese platters on the menu, you can bet your pants that i'll be eating something sometime soon The back area is fun and intimate, with a large table for bigger groups, smaller ones for a sexy date, or single sitting at the bar if you so like. The jukebox is full of fun quirky music, and Cliff notes and board games are provided as entertainment for you while you imbibe. Feel like communicating with the dead? FOR SHAME. I've been in to Vermillion many, MANY times. Mostly just to see the art, as the artists shown here ALWAYS interest me. However, I've been in many times to have a glass of wine, or drink a beer, maybe eat some mac and cheese or a slice of bread. I've also been to a couple of functions here. I love this place. For me, this little strip on Cap Hill is a destination; we head down to Gray, Barca and Vermillion after band practice, just to hang out on quiet weekday evenings, to get a party night started or to stop off during extended bar hops. The atmosphere rocks, the owners are always there engaged with people, and... well I always love the art here. And, to make things even better, a notice just went up on Vermillion's window announcing their liquor license!! Yet another well rounded place to hang out with everything! read more

This place is GREAT! We were walking around town looking for places to dance and drink and happened to stumble in here. I'd like to think that we found a really good mullet... business in the front, party in the back. In the front it's a really nice art gallery... seems posh and more quiet... but once you walk a little back you enter the bar area. Exposed brick and an extensive alcohol selection, complete with a live DJ playing dope house tunes. LOVE! The drink pricing was not bad at all and I loved that I could float between a back room party and a swanky gallery during our time here. Another perk was that it was not insanely busy so we were able to snag seats and move about freely. What is it with this stretch of 11th and white people bars? I mean. Is it some city ordinance that Value Village has to be counteracted with some seriously bourgeoisie drinkeries? Didn't check out the front gallery, really, but it looked nice and sparse and calm. The aesthetics get a big checkmark from me. The drinks were pretty strong and I liked the semi-secluded air to the bar area, although the lights were possibly a smidge too bright. It'd be sexier in there if it were a little dimmer. Who knew? Not many! Not even the people who worked nearby we stopped to ask where it was. A small door on the south side of Barca leads to this small art gallery/lounge. Inside there are some very interesting works of art. I found the installment about the Nurse Sharks rather interesting. And there was some painting with a naked woman with a TV for a head and blood all over her hands that kept catching my eye all night. Tucked far into the back is Vermillion!! It has a quaint little bar area with nice lighting and stools. The rest of the area (which is pretty big) is full of tables and a juke box. The lighting around the tables is darker, but nice for drinks and conversation. The music was also at a PERFECT volume so that you could talk with friends at a normal level, yet still enjoy the music if you choose to. Did I mention there is a shelf of games? Well, now I did! Betsy, Bert, Riss, and I started up a game of Scrabble while we waited for Michelle's farewell event to begin. Did you know that "Yelp" place to get a triple word score gives you 39 points?! Talk about a power word. :P I ordered the Pot Roast stew, and like Riss, I loved it! Everything in it was perfectly cooked and came with two slices of bread to mop of the yummy broth. I tried a couple of different red wines, one was something like Chariza or something ($9 a glass) and the other was a Yakima Valley Cab Sauv. Both were quite flavorful. They even allowed us to bring in a couple trays of food & cupcakes. This is cool because they do serve food and could have pushed us to order off their small but lovely menu. If you haven't been and are looking for something unique with a loungy feel make your plan now. Try a dirty martini made with potato vodka. Ask them to play some old school Motley Crew on the stereo. I've got a Vermillion great things to say about this place and I have NO idea of where to start.. Hmm.. How's about with the art? Their Gallery hosts some fantastic local (and not so local) artists that change monthly. Currently, they've got some kitschy oils, portraying old Hollywood celebs. Great open space with tall ceilings and large windows. Continue in and down the hall and that's where you'll find the bar. It's a huge, open space with exposed brick walls and back lit faux windows. The Greasemachine Juke and the bar fashioned out of 'Leilani Lanes' (yes, literally) were definitely my favorite pieces. They've got some nice wines to choose from and their beer selection is diverse. The bartenders/ owners are lovely people who've got class, great taste in art, and a knack for putting together what has become one of my favorite stops on the hill. read more

Vermillion is such a cool space. It's always filled with works by local artists, so you can walk in to both admire the art and buy some if anything catches your eye. If art isn't really your scene, maybe pinball is? Several pinball machines (and a couple of other arcade games) adorn the entrance. Do be prepared to wait for your turn if you come on a busy weekend evening. Once you make your way past all the art and arcade fun and find yourself at the back area, you'll find the bar. There are several beer and wine options available, as well as standard well drinks. Prices are reasonable, and pours are generous (especially for wine). If it's a popular night, you'll also find a DJ in this area, and a dance floor spontaneously forming. You always have the option to retreat to the quieter gallery section if you need a break from the DJ, which is nice. Vermillion offers a much chiller vibe than the clubs up the street, but doesn't skimp on the music. Drink prices are also lower. God I love Vermillion. It really makes the bar/art gallery thing work where so many other places have failed. To wit, I have experienced the falling at this amazing place: 1. An actual, no joke, GREAT poetry reading. A recitation of Jackson MacLow's "Is that wool hat my hat?" brought the house down. 2. Francis Farmer Organ Karaoke. I have never seen anything like it. Everyone was singing "La Marseillaise" as if we'd been transported to Casablanca. 3. A quilting show that was actually interesting. 4. Oh and your mom was there. Remember that? She certainly does. Art + Music + Alcohol. After waiting over half an hour to get into another bar (just to find out that one of our friends couldn't get in) we headed for Vermillion and got right in. It had a fun and easy atmosphere, they had a DJ that played some good music, and we were served some pretty stiff drinks by really friendly bartenders. Vermilion feels almost like someone's secret speakeasy in the back of a gallery. Pretend to appreciate the neat art on the way in to the back for your illicit drinks, you rum-running lush. Shhh! Don't let on that you're wise to the others. In the back is a super cool bar, an awesome juke box with a little window that lets you peek in on its archaic lost-art inner workings, and I believe they may even have food. I don't know about the food. I just like to drink and in my visit to Vermilion, drink I did. Everything from cheap drafts to well made cocktails are slung here. I would ask for vodka at a winery. This place is great. They show wonderful works of art and the back is a nice hidden secret. The exposed brick and friendly atmosphere make it one of seattles best little spots. Its nestled between Grey and Barca. Great staff and regulars, wine, spirits, snacks, and a relaxed atmosphere. There's usually an eclectic mix of music from the vinyl jukebox going on, sometimes live music, sometimes classic/cheesy movies are shown, and there's usually something interesting on the walls. The bar tends to fill up and spill out into the gallery on the weekends, so I'd say the best time to relax and not have it get too crowded and loud is during the middle of the week. Vermillion is a pretty nice space. Nestled beside the more raucous and brotastic Barca, it's a good escape from the typical weekend crowds on Pike (as others have mentioned). There's a hidden bar in the back with decent prices and a chill atmosphere. You can walk around with your drink and check out whatever the current art on display is, which is usually not too bad and even good at times. One time when I went in there, the place smelled like old gym mats covered in cat piss. But it's only happened once of the countless times I've hung out here, so give them a mulligan for that night. This is a great little find on the Hill. The art gallery has been around, but walk further back and they have set up a small wine bar in the back. Nice selection of wine at reasonable prices, and the coolest jukebox around. One of my companions who is much more hip than I am noted it was probably an art installation. It had cool 45's that would load periodically, that's all I know. Nice and small to go with a few friends and enjoy some wine in a low key atmosphere. You can peruse the latest art rotation and admire art that you can't afford, unless you are willing to sacrifice your wine budget for your art budget. And well...let's just say I have a lot of wine bottles at home, and no fancy art pieces. read more

Vermillion is a unique, hipster, hole in the wall bar that epitomizes Capitol Hill's culture and energy. When you enter, you'll see a long hallway with artwork on the walls. At the end is a larger area with music, drinks, and seating area. This bar doesn't get crazy and rowdy as some of the other places on Pike do, and is an awesome spot to take friends on a Saturday night and enjoy a few drinks. read more

I've been to a few art openings at Vermilion and although it seems like more of an art gallery I'm always impressed by the quality of the drinks and food here. Their wine selection is good and reasonably priced. Their mac and cheese and cheesecake is made from scratch and both are delicious. They have an interesting port wine in a chocolate cup dessert that's a great night cap. As for decor, Vermillion has a fresh feel that's fairly unique on the hill. They used recycled materials to construct the bar so it has an eclectic feel to it. If you look carefully the bar table is made from bowling alley flooring. It's a funky little space with exposed brick, high celings and a kick ass Rainier Beer sign. Near by spots can get to be a little much later in the evening with loud newly 21 year olds. I attended a Capitol Hill Seattle blog meetup here and will definitely be back! The gallery up front is clean and spacious, while the cafe/bar in the back is low-key and inviting. Nice wine selection with a great happy hour price of $3/glass for Washington wines. Score! They serve a pot roast -- which sounds boring and lame, but seriously, it's good. I mean, really good. It's perfectly seasoned and tastes home made. Good selection of meats and cheeses. And don't miss dessert! I had a chocolate mousse cake which was really good.
