in hand: carnitas taco. left to right: tripa, pastor, y asada
John P.

i'm a traditionalist so I didn't go for the birria tacos that this place apparently makes really well. Got 4 regular tacos with different meats: carnitas, asada, tripa and pastor. Price point: great. Food: great. All the meats are juicy and flavorful. Salsa roja has the perfect amount of spice. The tomatillo salsa has a great balance of zing and flavor. Location: tucked in a corner of the strip mall with TJ Maxx next to a a nail salon and a large empty storefront. The outside of this restaurant leaves more to be desired but don't let that fool you. First time eating food from here an definitely not the last. Also the cherry on top, the limes are not dry! No review for service since I did a doordash pickup.

Worth $7 and the wrong order? NOPE

Ehhh just had a not so great experience. I mean, not bad but definitely not good. It's the second time I've been here. The first time it was really good and the staff was really nice. Which is why I came back today. I ordered a carne asada crispy taco and canned soda. The menu by the register said $4 taco and $1.50 canned soda. Seems fair. The woman told me the total which was $7. I asked how it ended up being $7 and she pointed to the menu (paper) and it said "Prices subject to change." Then she said she thinks the taco is now $4.50. Then she called over the other lady who printed the receipt since the first lady didn't give me my receipt. Okay prices changed, not a big deal. I sit down and a few minutes later she brings me the taco. I take a bite and it's chicken. I had ordered carne asada. So I tell the lady that the taco was chicken and she said crispy tacos come with chicken unless you request another meat...WHICH I DID. I remind her I ordered carne asada and she apologizes and starts making the correct one. She then comes over to me and tells me it's almost done and makes sure to take away the chicken taco which I found funny. Most places would apologize for the incorrect order and offer to let you eat it while waiting for the correct item since THEY MESSED UP, but nope, she made sure to swiftly take it. Whatever, they like to waste food, it's on them but I would think customer service wise, it would have been a nice gesture for getting the order wrong and making me wait longer. I just didn't care of the service today and I feel the food was overpriced. You can definitely go down the street and get the same thing for a few bucks cheaper. Would I come back?...hmmmm probably not but maybe? As I said, first experience was good and today sucked.

Food is good at a decent price. Street tacos are $3.15 (al pastor and tripas are good!). Authentic Mexican food, rice is really good. Nice friendly service seals the deal for me. Stop by if you are near by.

The 3 Birria tacos & consomé were absolutely delicious! The drink i got was an agua fresca of jamaica and it was so refreshing the perfect beverage to go with my tacos. We also ordered a chicken burrito that was so filling! I definitely recommend coming here to eat! The ladies running this business as super friendly & hard working!

Easy to see why this spot is a local favorite! Delicious, fresh tacos and tasty papusas too! Casual dine-in options available, but there's also lots of take out orders.

So if you're in the area this spot is okay. Price wise I'd say it's a ok deal. Small dining area but I can tell the two ladies who work there are doing their best to keep it clean. You buss your own tables here so don't expect a fine dining experience. The spot was very busy on a weekday with locals, blue collar workers and tradesmen. It's always a good thing when you see the community and people of the same ethnicity as the food at the restaurant. Means there doing something right. We got a taco salad which was tasty but not a lot of salad, also it had rice in it which I didn't expect or would have ordered without. The Chile relleno and enchilada plate was decent size and had good flavor. I don't frequent this area often and I don't think I would go out of my way but if your local give it a try. One thing that was odd about this location is you basically walk through the storage area and part of the kitchen to use the restroom.

The fish tacos were so flavorful, they didn't even need any sauce! I love that the fish was not deep fried, too. Kudos to the chef!

The zucchini was cooked perfectly and not overcooked or soggy at all, which made the whole burrito taste fresh and flavorful. We also got the appetizer with the chips, zucchini, arugula, and cheese and that ended up being one of my favorite dishes. Everything paired together really well and had a lot of flavor without feeling too heavy. I also tried the mango margarita with tajín on the rim and really liked it because it wasn't overly sweet. Super refreshing and balanced. The Dude ordered the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce and really enjoyed those as well. Customer service was also really good. They checked on us periodically throughout the meal and everyone was friendly and attentive without hovering. Overall the restaurant felt clean, relaxed, and comfortable. Definitely a spot we would come back to again. Especially a lot of vegetarian options ! Vegetarian approved!!!

Located in the small shopping area off Contra Costa, right across from Pizza My Way, you will find…read moreEl Aguila Mexican Cuisine. First off, the place is pretty big. There's a ton of seating inside, and everything is very spacious. Though, I do have to say it always feels incredibly empty for some reason and there's never anybody actually inside outside of a few tables, but they do have tons of takeout so perhaps that's the tradeoff. However, don't let the lack of eating patrons inside the place put you off. This taqueria offers a good variety of different options as any taqueria would offer, and many of the options have pictures and stuff with it. The service here is, kind of hit or miss. The people in the front usually aren't overly friendly, and will sometimes feel like they're just there until the clock turns work over. Sometimes they're bordering on rude as they just kind of give you an indifferent stare as you're ordering, or will just feel as if they're half listening and not even looking up. The service was a bit better when I dined in, so perhaps maybe it's just the takeout, although it's usually the same person for both. Price wise, it's certainly not going to be cheap. If you want the best bang for your buck around here, El Aguila probably won't be it as there's a plethora of taquerias in this area. Food quality wise, it's pretty good overall. There are some tasty dishes here that will certainly warrant the little bit of extra cost here compared to other places. Things that I have tried here are the burritos and the torta. The burritos here are yummy as they they will have ingredients inside the burrito that is slightly different than your cookie cutter burrito at any other place. It really does help adds layers of flavor to it that other places do not offer. However, the best part of it is indeed the fact they grill the outside of the burrito to get that nice flakiness that wrap, and makes it a oh so rewarding experience. Meat portions was okay, but wish it had more especially for the cost. The torta I got was pretty good, as the ingredients inside were pretty typical so nothing really stood out. The break was toasted well, but I do wish it was a bit softer as it may have been to toasted. Should be toasted outside and soft inside, but this one just felt toasted all over. The meat portion also suffers from the same issue as the burrito as that it's not as generous as it could be. However, the flavors and taste were fine. It's certainly a nice place for those who want a bit of a different style of their Mexican cuisine. They have some flavors here that will be atypical of most of the cookie cutter taquerias around. While they are a bit expensive comparatively, the portions are actually decent (minus the meats). You can certainly be filled with just a single burrito. Worth a visit.

We did find one that had excellent street tacos but they were very pricey, three tacos for $16.99 with no chips. I would need to get two orders so 6 street tacos with tax and tip would be well over $40 which is No Bueno. We weren't sure what to expect from La Tapatia but I liked that the menu had crunchy tacos. I ordered a pork tamale, a crunchy ground beef taco and some arroz. My friend ordered a chile relleno and a crunchy ground beef taco. The food came with complimentary tortilla chips and a salsa dip with frijoles. The dip and Chios were fresh and the salsa with blended with frijoles was enjoyable. The crunchy tacos were fried nicely and had a good amount of filling. I thinking about trying carnitas as the filling but there a bit of a charge. The tamale was pretty good. The masa was not too dry or too wet. The meat to masa ratio was about right. My friend liked his chile relleno. The rice was more well done than I usually prefer and needed a little more seasoning. Overall, the food was delicious, service very attentive and pricing was a bit higher than other restaurants but still fair. I plan to take the family next trip and try other dishes. For a good family meal or with friends, drop on in for good food and service. You won't be disappointed.

Feb 2 2025 3.5 stars…read more Lately our go to Mexican eats is Cinco De Mayo in Martinez. Christians-smh. It is Sunday and Cinco is closed. The server and service here at Isla was perfect. I pointed out to he waiter that he had a crumb on his chin and he wiped and chuckled like a nice champ. The music is pleasant but a bit louder than needed so I brought out the earplugs. The entire indoor setup is nice. Our food is arriving after what seems like a long wait meaning either the food is being served fresh, hot and tasty, or we are in for a mediocre experience. Our two plates arrived. Chilli relleno and Grilled chicken enchilada. I'm not a fan of the aesthetics of the smallish squair white plates. Reminds me of trying to look upscale. We own plates like these and that didn't work. Wife's enchilada plate was covered with three hot and very tasty chicken filled food bombs plus sides. The chili plate looked a little weak (too much plate showing) but that was the tastiest chilli relleno ever in 40 years of me enjoying these. Served hot with cheese filled up to the ying yang, an extra spiciness I have never had before that I loved and me wishing I had a spoon to scrape up the end of the sauce. Unfortunately the smallish rice and bean servings on both plates were luke warm and tasted so so. . I had similar hotter to those with tv dinners back in the day. The two plates and a coke at $43 has me scratching my chin on whether we will make that drive again. That is unless it is Sunday. Then possibly. .

After giving it some thought, I decided to return and explore what it was about Isla that everyone raved over. This time around, I ordered the fish tacos, and I was hooked! Isla's fish tacos are phenomenal--easily the best in the area and a must-have every single time. I usually go for the tilapia, though I've sampled the red snapper as well. They come out super crispy on the outside yet remain incredibly moist inside, with the salsa and toppings melding together perfectly. I also visited their new location today and was pleasantly surprised by the ample parking and comfortable seating. The space is beautiful, making it even more enjoyable to stop by for those irresistible fish tacos. Here's a quick rundown of my ratings: Fish (all varieties): 8.7/10 Birria: 7/10 (good, but not their standout item) Carne Asada Super Burrito: 5.8/10 When it comes to satisfying my fish taco cravings, Isla remains the only choice.
