I'm not local to this area but stopped in to have a squeak looked at while I was in town. this was the second time I'd been here. anyhow, they weren't too busy and the wait time was minimal while the people that were there were taken care of. also, I was greeted almost instantly on entry. the first time I came here I bought pedals and shoes. the installed ad adjusted the clip-ins and installed the cleats to my shoes on that visit. this time the noise could not be duplicated and I was feeling like this was just one more case of taking your car to the mechanic and the problem isn't there. still, they looked a few things over, made some suggestions and soon I was on my way. even though I had taken some of their time on a semi-busy morning they didn't charge me for it. while I was wandering that morning looking at stuff the prices seemed kind of high but, it was also top shelf kind of stuff. it's retail for sure but with great service so far. I bought a road bike from a guy moving out of state. He had bought it here and had it serviced numerous times. So I left his house with bike in tow and headed here. I walked in and it seemed like I was bothering the 2 guys working. I told him I wanted to see about getting a tuneup and fitting and some accessories. He said mike was the only one who did those thing and he was gone. I asked if I could leave him my info. The kid wrote down just my name and number. Not what I was looking to have done. He told me mike would call me when he got there and walked off. I still wanted to buy new pedals and a new seat and pump etc. I left and went to Cda bike co up the street and was treated with respect and dropped $200 not including my tune up and fitting. Oh by the way 4 days later and I'm still haven't heard anything from mike. read more

I have used many bike shops over the past 30 years, but none have compared to the service I get at VE. They treat me with respect even when I do something exceptionally dumb to my bike. The get me out and back riding faster than I expect. Today I broke my chain and front cog on Cave Trail, and took it in - in 3 hours (despite a backlog of tune-ups) they called and had it ready. We wanted to ride the Centennial Bike Trail and checked most of the bike stores for bike rental. All of them were closed (without explanation) except Vertical Earth. We were checked in and out riding in 10 minutes. Got some nice bikes and helmets for 4 hours for $25 each. The staff was wonderful and gave us tips on getting to the trail and the sites to see. This really makes me sad to write this.. but if it wasn't a pressing issue I wouldn't be doing this. We have bought 5 bikes from Vertical Earth.. and have had them work on many of our others too. We used to love them because of the awesome service we had received the first times we were in there. We bought a rode bike from them and I was incredibly excited about it... the first ride I actually got to take it on all the bike did was clank and clank which is odd because they claimed it was brand new. We took it in for a tune up because it wasn't done right the first time. The second ride it had even more issues!!! Each time is was a silly excuse as to why. We then took in another one of my bikes that was having a break issue.. they charged me quite a bit to replace and fix them... just to literally have the SAME exact problem on my next ride... up a mountain may I mind you. We still gave the benefit of the doubt and took our parents in to get a bike for each of them. We dropped over $5,000 between the bikes and then bought multiple (4) bike trainers. Since then they have been going up a mountain near our house many times... each time we find something a little off. We finally decided to take our bikes elsewhere to get looked over. The cables on my fathers bike were cut too short and they said if he had taken a hard left turn he would've collapsed his back wheel. He is 48 and having that happen would do serious damage to him. They had to order in completely new cables for our already nearly brand new bike. My mother's bike was completed messed up. The spokes were all barely in and nothing was tightened down correctly. She also had to get completely new cables as well. We have another bike that we got in brand new and wanted to add some things to it. They did add what we wanted but all the screws were stripped and the frame is now damaged. It's a Salsa Cutthroat Rival that is worth with what we've added, $6,000 now. There's a lot more that I can add but I think you get the point. No matter how upset we are our experience has not improved. They are kind people but they should NOT be working on bikes. We as a family have spent WELL over 15k just on bikes themselves let alone the tune ups and parts to add and replace, we have no problem spending the money to have them treated right and would love to support a local business.. sad to say we won't be giving them any more business and we all recommend that you don't either. read more

Went looking for my first bike in 20 years. Other stores in town didn't exactly throw out the welcome mat, although they are decent. Vertical Earth got it right - they listened to what I wanted, then we methodically went through and I realized I wasn't informed well enough to make that choice. They steered me right, I bought a bike and now I buy everything there, because I can pick their brains and get exactly what I need, not what I think I need. Stopped into this shop while on vaca with the tribe. 4/7 bikes needed some equipment and fixing. Even worse, we'd been camping, riding, hiking, etc. for the past 4 days. We had to stink like death! The staff were overly accommodating. Made me feel like a local. They loaned me some tools, fixed a chain issue, coached me up on some maintenance issues and sent us on our way. Knowing we were visiting, they could have easily passed us on to the next shop, or gave us the cold shoulder. Extremely professional service. My wife came back a few hours later, looking for a kid-friendly bike route. They pulled out the maps, gave her great directions and highlighted her map with places to eat! I stopped by this store while in town on vacation, and sat in front for the Independence Day Parade and on a whim walked into the store. I had a good sales experience, and am happy with my purchase of a brand new mountain bike for my son, but the bike itself seemed to be poorly assembled which was disappointing. I'm not a bike nut, so forgive my poor explanation, but right out of the store the handlebars were very loose, the brakes so poorly adjusted that they need to be pulled all the way to the grips before they work, and the derailer is out of adjustment, which has made the chain skip off the rear sprocket when shifting into first. Seems like whoever assembles their bikes could use some additional training or motivation. I'd have given it 5 stars, but I'll deduct one for this assembly issue. I'm sure if I were local they'd have made it right if I went back, but since I'm from out of state that's not practical. Other than that, the price I paid for the bike was spot on with the lowest price online, the bike is awesome and a perfect recommendation for my son, and the salesman was a pleasure to deal with. My take away; check the bike before you leave the store and make them dial it in before you leave. read more

I am personally not a big fan of this place. I've walked in this shop a few times and the guys there act too cool for school. The employees think it is above them to help you. What a joke, this is Coeur d alene not Aspen or Vail. I've got the attitudes in those shops in the past. The other thing I found interesting is that the inventory was very low and selection was sparse on everything. The prices were sky high and double of online retailers. There are a couple of better shops in town that I won't name that are better and you can figure it out. read more

We took my daughters bike apart to transport it in her car and couldn't get it put back together properly. We took it in and they worked on it for at least 15 minutes. I went in on a win. My son and I have never been in before. When we went inside we were helped right away. I don't remember the mans name that helped us. He did not rush us he let my son ride several bikes and gave us his recommendations. He did not try to over sell us. My son decided on a blue and yellow Scott bike we put on a couple accessories and they did them right away. Holly crap service was Awsome prices were great. Planned on spending 500-600 got out of there for under 500. Highly recommend buying your next bike from these guys and gals. 10 out of 10 will for sure be back read more

I asked them to do whatever it takes to make the bike right. Tune it up as my daughter in-law was going to ride it to work. Counter person said basic tuneup was $40.00. They adjusted the brakes for $58.00. No parts. The rear suspension was missing the bolt that attaches shock to the frame. They looked at nothing. They did not even lubricate the chain. Professional they are not. Really disappointed. My other bike I took to Trec bike store the next week.. So much more professional and they did it right. Vertical earth, my tag was #004828. I took my mountain bike in for some minor repair work just before the 4th of July. The counter person/mechanic listened very well to my explanation of what needed to be done. They got to the bike in a couple days which for how busy they were was quite good. The best part though was that I got to talk to the actual mechanic who worked on my bike which I like. On my last three visits to CdA I've stopped in to Vertical Earth. Not once did anyone in the store acknowledge me! On my last visit, three different individuals made eye contact but said nothing and went on about their business. I don't expect an outpouring of attention; however, common courtesy and good customer service was non-existent! It could be that I didn't fit their image of a skinny shaved leg cyclist but I spend as much money as the next person in my LBS! Won't waste my time here on my next visit!
