In a few minutes the pet nurse came to check on us, the actual vet took about 1 hour & 10 mins to see us. The vet was very nice, confident & assertive in diagnosing Fiona... once we were seen things moved pretty quickly... and we were on our way home. Said they didn't have the right tools they needed since it "wasn't that much of an emergency". No communication about delays or finding an alternate facility to help instead. Checked in on only once when left alone in the room. Staff were friendly, but not helpful. I understand other emergencies may have needed to be prioritized but communication regarding the available staff on hand or when we could be seen would have helped us find relief for our cat much faster. read more

I had to start the New Year at the emergency vet clinic with my baby in the early hours. My miniature schnauzer was in a lot of pain and discomfort. This was the only emergency vet open Wednesday morning and was quite a journey away from me. I arrived at the facility and was immediately met by one of the vet technicians in the main lobby. Everyone working here was lovely and caring. I was immediately taken into a waiting room, and they began their assessment. The only negative I will say was that the wait time was long, but I realized other critical patients were being seen at this time. They did blood work on my baby and determined he wasn't suffering from pancreatitis or anything else insidious but instead a bad tummy ache. They administered some anti-nauseous medication and sent me on my way. Even though I'm $800 poorer, I will say they were sincere and upfront with prices and seemed to really care about my pet's well-being. read more

I'd just like to say that this clinic is truly amazing. I moved here from NWFL in May so no established vet yet due to not needing annuals until next year. Was running out of options w/ my work schedule & my coworker recommended VEC Oakland. Annette took my call early in the day while I was still at work & very quickly got my cat & I into an exam room once I was able to get there later in the afternoon. Dr. Lieberman & Rayna both took great care of my Luna after it turns out she fractured her fibula. Both were very nice & took the time to answer my questions as well as explain everything that was occurring from exams to costs. Rayna especially showed a lot of love to my often timid cat while getting her assessed/treated & I really appreciated that. CareCredit is offered here & a big help if you need emergency services. Ian & Kyrra made checking out easy w/ CareCredit & put all my paperwork in a folder. That may seem small to some, but everything this clinic did made this stressful situation easier for me & my Luna. When our kitty fell ill on Thanksgiving we had nowhere to go since our normal vet was closed. We decided to go to the emergency clinic. We were seen rather quickly and I felt like we were both treated with patience and kindness. I was rather stressed when it came to discussing a surgery plan and money, but they were patient and calm and gave me time and support. The surgery happened in the middle of the night and I appreciated the immediate updates as they happened. I called an additional handful of times as she was out of surgery to see how she was progressing and the staff never made me feel like a bother and even suggested calling when I needed, or visiting if I wanted. This night put me through it but I felt like my baby and myself were in the best hands. I am so thankful for everyone who helped take care of my Maisie (even if she was grumpy). Not a good experience at all. I took my cat that has diabetes, because her sugar levels were to low. I was always told by my cat regular doctor that if sugar levels ever get to low, to give some Caro Syrup, Well I ran out and forgot to buy some, i was so desperate for my cat, that I just gave her a little bit of Agave Sweetener without researching first if it was safe... I decided to take her to ER to be sure she was going to be ok. Well They took my cat to the back and I was told that they were very busy with other emergencies, that they were going to administer an IV to get sugar back to normal, two hours later i was asking how my cat was, they never acknowledge me of my concern with the use of the sweetener, they just told me to call poison department, they refuse to recheck sugar level after the IV, supposedly because she was to aggressive, which is hard to believe, but even they could ask for help, I ask to talk to the Doctor, but the Doctor was to busy to talk to me. They have put a bandage on her paw, and the technician ask me to remove it before leaving. When I remove the bandage there was a lot of blood on her paw, which never was clean. I left with out knowing if her sugar levels were back to normal, left with out knowing if the sweetener was safe or dangerous and with out seeing a doctor. Technician were not friendly at all. I describe this Clinic as just a money maker I arrive to my house to check my cat blood sugar and monitor her to be sure she had not reactions to the sweetener. we arrived at the vets and he finally came in. I explained what was going on and he looked my cat over then said I am going to take him in another room. Not asking me to come. came back quit a while later and never really came up with anything. no blood test no xray nothing. he said couldn't really find anything significant. He helps me pick my cat up and put him in the cat bed. My cat was screaming at the top of his lungs. He never did that before. Brought him home and picked him up and screamed again. now I am going to my vet who wasn't available today because my cat is so sensitive to move or pick up. Before visiting this place I had once called with what I thought was an emergency. I accidentally gave my dog double medicine: 2.5 mg of oral Torbutrol rather than 1.25 mg. I was freaking out, called this emergency vet and they told me to rush in and they'd induce vomiting right away. My dog seemed content and unaffected so I called around and got varying instructions. Then it dawned on me to check the manufacturer website. The amount I gave him is a normal recommended dose of the drug. Not at all dangerous. Luckily i did not put my pup through the stress of following that advice. He was fine. I've actually gone to this vet now though so I will review. I came here with a true emergency. Out of nowhere, and after an active, healthy day, my elderly dog let out a big bloody sneeze (which I've never seen before) and it seemed to me to clog his nose. Since he also has a collapsed trachea, I knew I needed to get there STAT. Luckily I left when I did because by the time we got there his tongue started turning blue. They took him in the back right away. In the meantime, I spoke with the tech at the front desk, Marissa. She is amazing. She is so polite, attentive, concerned, and very informative. Throughout the ups and downs I've experienced at this place, she was the constant pillar of honest, friendly, caring, reliable advice. She was the person I was inclined to go to with any inquiries or to express concerns or ideas, because that's the kind of welcoming presence she has - great person to be greeted by. Anyway, they had put my dog on oxygen right away and told me to come say goodbye to him, that he's incredibly critical, and was about to pass. I went back there, expecting to see him near-death, but he's standing on the table recuperating, bright-eyed, and alert. They stabilized him and brought me back to the patient room where a gal with some pretty nose rings and short black wavy hair told me that he'd still need to be put down now. I asked "why?" and she said quality of life. I explained that he had just learned to walk in his wheelchair today and was so proud of himself, and had a lovely day hanging out under the umbrella while I gardened - waggy tail, smiles, good quality of life (spoiled). I then asked "medically, why?" and she didn't really have an answer, and even said the vet hadn't done the exam yet. This is the main reason the 2 stars dropped off from this experience. Right off the bat the prognosis was certain death. I was allowed to go back to the treatment area to see him again, where i relayed what I had just been told to the vet, Dr. St. Pierre. The vet assured me that they wouldn't make this decision for me and, with sincerity in her eyes, said that she would do her very best for my little boy. This vet, Dr. St. Pierre, was incredibly compassionate, kind, diligent, and thorough. I can't say enough good things about her. After talking to her once, I was comforted just by her presence going forward. In the 48+ hours i spent getting emergency veterinary care at VEC (this place), Blue Pearl, and Oviedo Veterinary Care + Emergency, Dr St. Pierre was the very best. Andre, one of the techs was also incredible. After being told by another tech that my dog "wouldn't eat," I told Andre in the patient room exactly how and when he will eat. When I called at 3 AM to see how he was doing, Andre answered and said Louie gave the exact signals I said he would, and he hand fed him a healthy sized meal. He was impressed by how much my dog ate and he seemed to share my optimism about that. My dog will typically not eat dog food from anyone else but me. The fact that Andre looked for the signals I told him about, fed him at that time, and Louie ate the whole meal, showed me that he is truly a fanatic vet tech. I'm so thankful for him doing that because my next 2 days at emergency vets, no one fed him or allowed me to. Andre, Marissa, Dr. St. Pierre, and Becca (who will be getting her own review based on my experience with her) were absolute superstars. I wish they were open 24/7 because I had to transfer out both mornings. I brought him 2 nights because I wanted him on oxygen til it could be determined if his snout is blocked. Note: I will have to give 3 separate reviews based on 3 wildly different experiences i had at this vet, because grouping them into one would not do justice to how wonderful or miserable this place can be. I've had 2 experiences at the Oakland. FL location...the first being better. The second, they kept me waiting in a room for over 1.5 hours with a dog in pain. I asked how long we'd be waiting. Dr. came in annoyed and then refused to give a basic pain reliever without paying $600 for bloodwork first. This was at 1am so we waited for our vet to open. Our shih zhu had surgery with our regular vet on Thursday to remove a growth on an anal gland. On Saturday, he started with a bloody discharge from the rectum so we called to verify hours and was told there was an hour wait. Since we were coming from Ocala, we were good. We checked in and was told that we'd get into a room as soon as possible. Five to six others came in after us and were all taken back after a short wait in the lobby. I asked about the delay and was given a spiel that the most critical cases were seen first. We waited over 2 hours in the lobby. Our baby was not only bleeding but since he was overdue for his pain meds, he was whimpering and trembling due to the pain. We decided to return home to give him his meds and look for another facility. As we were leaving, a receptionist called out from the door asking if we were leaving. I explained that the bleeding should have been addressed. She again started her spiel about most critical blah, blah, blah. Might have been more believable if two food deliveries hadn't come in while we were waiting. Perhaps they should review their busy times and add staff to cover. Perhaps they should reconsider using the word "emergency" in the company name. Can't give a review of the vet as we did not see him/her. The second emergency facility was wonderful....got us into a room quickly. Both the tech and vet were compassionate and professional as they asked questions, and listened to us while treating our pup. We left with an additional prescription. read more

Besides the crazy attitude my pets doctor gave me here (literally enough to never go back) they're givingggg scam likely lol. After making me pay $85 to call a toxicologist and have them tell my cats symptoms to me (what.) I was told that no my cat isn't sick from the plant they ate anymore and she must have eaten a foreign object and needs surgery immediately. I said that's not possible we watch her closely always and she just has nothing that could've been in reach / consumed in our home by her. what i said seemed to go in one ear and out the other because my nurse supposedly felt an object in her stomach... probably her feces because she wouldn't pass a stool in 3 days ?? Anyway. My suspicions were right once going to another vet, no foreign objects were consumed and the plant was causing multiple deep problems for my cat, i guess don't go here if your cat is sick from eating a plant, you'll just have to pay $85 to talk to a random on the phone that doesn't help and you'll be treated as a less than person if they feel like you don't meet their status standards for a human. what a joke. By far the worst vet experience I've ever had. My baby was sick and I get that they cannot guarantee us anything, but there was not even an attempt to give us any indication that whatever they tried could make anything even slightly better. They took complete advantage of the fact that we were scared and had never had this breed of dog before (we have 2 adult dogs of other breeds) and they were more focused on trying to make us feel incompetent and like we don't know anything rather than explaining to us what steps and options were available to make everything better. They waited until we only had 2 other options in the area to tell us that it's staying with them or going directly to a vet when practically nothing was open. He's with a more caring and competent vet and emergency care provider now and I am glad to know exactly where I will never let any of my pets or pets of people I care about go should something happen ever again. read more

I'd love to adjust this with a better review but my cat is still bleeding in her crate in the lobby after four hours but the dog that MIGHT HAVE eaten a grape got seen, got induced vomiting, did not eat the grape, and is about to go home in like twenty minutes. How a barking, happy, active dog that /may/ have eaten something is more emergent than a cat that is actively bleeding, I'll never know. Update: I spoke with a vet that actually cares about animals who recommended I also take my cat to a place that cares about animals. I received exceptional care from the Veterinary Emergency Clinic. As soon as I walked through the doors a back door opened and a vet technician greeted me. I was taken to a back room and at that moment the process began. It is so difficult to be in an emergency situation with your animals. Anxiety and tensions run high. Both the vet technician and the veterinarian were calm. They both jumped in and worked hand in hand to care for my beloved pet. We didn't immediately talk about money and I appreciated that. I couldn't bare the thought of my situation turning into a business transaction. It wasn't the priority for me and I'm am grateful that they knew their audience and spared me. Unfortunately things did not turn out the way that my heart ached for but we were in compassionate hands. I recommend this facility. Questionable and predatory practices. Took pet away to treatment area and refused to bring back until signed out without care (still charged a fee even though pet was never examined). Doctor improperly quoted state vaccine rules in threatening manner. They were about to treat pet (suspected blocked bladder), but in the 5 hours we had waited, pet urinated in kennel and didn't need any treatment...but nobody knew this because they hid the pet from owner, weren't able to/refused to handle pet, and did not adequately assess the situation prior to beginning treatment activities. There is no urgent need to care for the animals here at all, they take all the time in the world to get things done, there is no communication at all, and they basically threaten you with the lie that animal control will come get your pet if not picked up by a certain time. We took our sick cat in after going to our vet, our original vet stated there was probably a blockage, but they did not have a surgeon. When we got there, the vet told us it probably wasn't a blockage but pancreatitis. Within half an hour, that was out. However, the vet had decided he was smarter than the other vets, of course that was until 2am when they called to tell us it was (surprise, surprise) probably a blockage. They left no message and when I called at 4am it was too late to do anything because they were closing soon. Basically paid $800 for a cat babysitter and a lackadaisical attitude. When we got there we were told we had to pick the cat up no later than 7am, but anytime before that would be fine. When I got there at 5:20am, they told me they did not want to discharge until 6:30. Seriously? When signing out, they made me tell them where I was taking my cat. How would I know? It was 5:30am and no vet services were open, so I got mad and cussed. The whole experience was terrible, especially when trying to push the original vet's opinion and being told we were wrong, only to be told we were right 8 hours later. 6 patients that whole night and they didn't do anything for my cat until after midnight (dropped of at 7pm). Stay away unless a real emergency that cannot wait until the morning or get to Minneola's AllCare. Went to AllCare and they immediately pointed out the blockage in the x-ray and stated they would either bumped non-essential surgery's to get my cat in or call in a surgeon immediately. If you go anywhere go to AllCare in Minneola rather than this scam "emergency" clinic. The only thing that will happen here is throwing money away. read more

I would not recommend to use "veterinary emergency clinic" in Oakland. Story time* We took our dog (15lb or so Shitzu) in around 8:30pm this Saturday because she was acting weird and already has prior Health concerns. After 5hrs of waiting in the car, They finally took her to the back and ran tests, urine test and blood work. After another hour or so, We got her back from the exam area and she was acting timid and even more strange (we thought that she may be acting this way because of this stressful day). We paid the bill, and finally took her back home around 3:30am. Getting into the car and When we got home, she was screaming/whimpering when we tried to picked her up, so my wife got back in the car and had to take her back in instantly right when we got home. She was fine in this regard when we brought her in. Apparently, they couldn't get a urine sample, so they withdrew it from her stomach by injecting a needle. (apparently this is normal, we didn't know. shes been to the vet 10 times in the last 2 years, never had a problem like this before) She was in so much pain and her stomach was super hard & Tender. So they inspected her, gave her medicine for the pain (the withdrawal of urine through the stomach can cause tenderness. I'm not against the process of the withdrawal, but nobody told us how they got the sample and the possible side effects that it could cause.) They then came in with a 2nd bill. When my wife asked about the 2nd bill and why all of this happened, the vet tech gave us an attitude and stormed out of the room saying "I'll just go get my manager" because she didn't want to deal with it. All because we were questioning our dog yelping after we left THEIR hospital. The next room over was the main managers office, my wife heard the girl say "THE GIRL IN ROOM 5 IS BEING SO RUDE!" And then the Manager came in and spoke with my wife and she told the manager that she could hear everything the girl said and that she is totally unprofessional. The manager was nice and understanding of our frustrations, waived the fees for the 2nd bill. She was the only decent part in all this. Long story long, I would not recommend this place for anybody who cares about their animals. Imagine, A place that treats you like shit, imagine how they treat your pets behind closed doors. read more

We had taken our pet here to stay for the weekend to have fluids due to having pancreatitis . We had called every 2 hours to check on Axl , because we wanted to make sure he was looked after . They sent me a video from the "VEC cel phone " of my dog walking around in his cage , that was 7:30 pm Saturday August 21,2021 . when we picked him up Monday at 6:01 am , HE WAS PARALYZED , HE COULDNT WALK OR EVEN WAG HIS TAIL . THEY HANDED HIM OVER WITH A PEE PAD , AND SAID YOU WILL NEED THIS . We will never know what actually happened , because their notes do not add up to what happened . it as always almost the same , they noted bright , alert, vocal . or the would say sitting up in cage . If he was paralyzed , they should have noticed , DR Merrit was on duty , she " claims " to have called me to tell me that there was a new observation that he was wobbly , and atatxic , BUT SHE SAID THAT IT WENT OT VOICE MAIL , SHE NEVER CALLED BACK OR LEFT A MESSAGE TO CALL THERE , THEN SHE SAID A SUPERVISOR WAS SUPPOSEDTO CALL . So when we picked up our beautiful dog , we had to take him to Blue pearl to have an mri immediately . They said he had damage to his spine that no surgery would correct . Axl passed away 5 days that , unfortunately we had rushed him back there to see if he had a heartbeat, or if he could be revived , sadly no he was gone . I have requested 4 times for someone to contact me to go over the notes , NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME AT ALL . When we were trying to leave with out pet , we pleaded 3 times with the receptionist, each time saying we had to wait , I called her a name , she then said I DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR DOG !!!!!!!!!! WOW ......................Its no wonder we will never know if the dropped him to cause his injury , BECAUSE THEY DIDNT TEND TO HIM AS THEY SHOULD HAVE . read more

The only good thing about the place was the front desk receptionist who graciously would check on my dog when I asked when otherwise we received no updates on how he was for 5 hours straight. While hanging outside on the patio with us, our dog, Thor started to shake and have this odd look on his face. Then all of the sudden his eyes got super wide and he was unable to move or walk. I picked him up in a towel and rushed to the car because I knew something was wrong. On the way to the vet, he was shaking uncontrollably, drooling, visibly suffering with those wide eyes that look glazed over and terrified. Then his whole body when stiff and he started to convulse. I ran him to the vet and they took him back right away. Then nothing. We waited 5 hours. I had to constantly ask the front desk receptionist to check on Thor because I received no news on how he was doing. Once it hit 11 pm with no answers I became mad and asked once more, when will the vet see him. They ended up coming into the room with Thor, gave no answers other than "his vitals are fine", dismissed me by saying "we don't know what happened but I don't think it was a seizure" and just sent us home. I'm pretty sure he had heat stroke based on my research and I feel awful. The vet was the worst experience. I was visibly worried and upset over my dog's condition and I felt dismissed by the vet tech and uncared for. I'm pretty sure they forgot to have someone actually come in and talk to us at some point until we finally asked. I will call a new vet in the morning to get him looked at again. I can't believe they would send a dog home after a traumatic incident like that with no answers for the owner. No testing. Nothing. read more

I drove to this clinic for over 2 hours in the middle of the night after my beautiful Shiba Inu, Sheila was accidentally hit by a car in my neighborhood. I arrived at VEC at 2:30am and they quickly attended to me. The receptionist, the techs, and doctor at the time Dr. Merritt were absolutely attentive and caring. They had wonderful customer service and even better care for my puppy. Dr. Merritt and her staff quickly attended to Sheila and ran the necessary tests and examinations. She suffered major injuries, a broken leg, and internal bleeding but were well equipped to aid me transport my baby in an oxygen unit to a hospital that could provide her 24 hour care after the morning. She was having trouble breathing on her own until She was in the unit. I am so so grateful for this clinic for saving my baby's life. Without them I'm not sure Sheila would still be alive. My dog was vomiting blood Saturday, VEC was recommended by my veterinarian office. Staff was super friendly, techs were super nice and doc was super knowledgeable. I did get there 7:30 pm and came home at 1 am. We had to wait 3 hours before seen by doctor, yes, it was super frustrating but my dog needed an urgent care, not emergency care.. the emergency situations were taken care of immediately. So the wait time was totally reasonable. I hope we and everyone don't have emergency situation, but I'd go back and recommend this place to anyone. read more

Let's face it: no one wants to be at an emergency vet. But when it comes down to it, our little furry family members need some help from time to time after hours. I wasn't aware that there was a veterinarian shortage, so some of the clinics closer to my home are actually closed. This location is about 30 minutes from where I live and I called in prior to my arrival to let them know I was coming in with a sick kitty. Upon arrival, you could tell they were busy by the number of cars in the parking lot. We were immediately greeted by the staff at the front desk with paperwork - upon completion, we turned it in and sat down. And we sat. And we sat. And we sat... It wasn't until my partner and I switched places that one of the four people behind the desk noticed us and came out to ensure we've been helped. We told them that we had been waiting for an hour and have turned in our completed paperwork, and she apologized and said they had been slammed that evening. I don't doubt that AT ALL: there were many people coming in and out and, like I said, plenty of cars in the parking lot. What was discouraging was that there were so many people behind the desk at various times chatting and laughing casually but no one noticed that our sick animal hadn't even been taken back yet. Discouraging when you're in an emergency situation. Anyway, they promptly took our cat back after an hour of waiting and told us we needed to wait in our car. Honestly, this was a preferred option as the waiting room is very unwelcoming: the staff is behind thick, bulletproof glass (which I don't fault them for these days), it's lit by stark bright florescent bulbs, there's no background noise or music, and the seating is just long, hard benches. All of this to say: I think waiting in the car where you can at least get some music and recline your seat is a practice that will hopefully continue. After a nap for a couple of hours in the car, they called us to let us know a room was ready. The vet that came in to see us was incredibly friendly, helpful, and apologetic for the long wait. She went above and beyond and gave us options for how she could best assist our pet overnight, suggesting a follow-up with our regular vet in the morning. She took wonderful care of our cat in an emergency situation. The staff member upon checkout was also very friendly and helpful - it looked like we were the last guests of the evening when we left around 4:30 in the morning. Again, no one WANTS to go to an emergency vet, but this one did in a pinch. I think it could be run better and setup to keep people more comfortable during stressful times, but it served its purpose well enough. If you're between making a call to your vet during the day or chancing it and seeing what happens overnight, though, I'd say just be proactive and call your regular vet during daytime hours for both your own and your pet's sake. read more

I wish I would've read the reviews before visiting this clinic. What everyone says about horrible customer service is absolutely true. I waited three hours for them to simply check in my pet for overnight observation when my pet was delivered directly from another veterinary clinic with all the doctors instructions. The vet didn't even have to see me... I literally waited three hours to pay for all the deposits for all the services that they could give to my pet within the 4 to 5 hours it has remaining at their clinic. This place is insane ridiculous. If you bring your pet here... You better bring overnight supplies. read more
