My experience at Viaggio was very interesting. The food was quite superb, I got the chicken alfredo. However, the service was often away from the table and left us waiting for a while. To be fair I will tell you that the atmosphere is very nice, the staff is very nice, and the food is good... That being said it is extremely overpriced. This restaurant needs to realize it is in New Jersey not New York. I went to a party there and they charged over $100 for the cake and the cake was small. They also get you over a barrel because if you don't get the cake from them they charge you a $5 per person cutting fee. I've never heard of something so ridiculous in my life. I don't know what was more ridiculous the price of the cake or the fact that they charge you $5 per person if you bring your own cake... I could list a lot of restaurants that have Better food, better service, better atmosphere and the price is considerably less. This place is not worth the money, I won't be back. read more

EXCELLENT. This place is just beyond what you'd expect in Wayne. It's on par with many of the great pasta/Italian restaurants in NYC. Most of the pasta is handmade, the ingredients are locally sourced, the service is perfect, and the execution is perfect. I think this is perhaps the best Italian restaurant in NJ? I would put it on par with pasta from Babbo, L'Artusi, etc. in NYC. The octopus, burrata, linguine and osso buco are musts. Another Italian restaurant in Wayne? This one beats all the others and more. We came too early and without a reservation, but they sat us down and brought us bread and terrific olive oil till they were ready to open the dining room. I had been here twice before and thought it was good, but not great. On this occasion, they showed me the error of my ways. We arrived for a late reservation and had to wait for just a bit. Upon being seated, our very pleasant waiter introduced himself and opened our wine. He was very helpful with menu suggestions. We started with the calamari, which I hesitate to call fried. It was so gently fried that it was a hybrid of grilled and fried...perfection. The peppers and sauce were terrific as well. I could have feasted on this all night. They also gave us a charcuterie board gratis due to our wait. It was a very classy touch and unexpected. The meats were very good, as were the accompanying peppers. My wife ordered the chicken, which sounded bland. Again, my mistake. It was THE best sautéed/grilled chicken I had ever eaten. It was cooked perfectly with many flavors that worked well together. My dish was the pappardelle with polpette and sausage. It was excellent with a nice balance of sauce, meats and pasta. We finished with afagotto and the cheesecake. Not sure what all the rave is here. Portions are small (more like Tapas), feel like I'm paying NYC prices with better restaurants at lower cost near-by, and the service stunk!! About time! Love having this addition in town. Food is great and really creative. Staff is friendly and works hard at making your meal special. Prices are not cheap, but if you were in NYC they would be a lot more. Recommend getting on their mailing list so that you can participate in some of their event meals. When in Sept.and disappointed, NOT handicap friendly. Made reservations Thur for a early 6:00 meal got a high table which should have been perfect but not comfortable. Got there 8 minutes late due to long Saturday mass and hostess was mad and disrespctive. Food was nothing outstanding that would bring me back. It's difficult to understand the hype about Viaggio. We had four appetizers and four entrees and we found them all mediocre. Bronzini had an overly sweet sauce. Cauliflower app had a strange sweet sauce and the bottom of bowl was filled with oil. One slice of bread per person. The espresso was watery. The chairs are very uncomfortable and our table slid around on the floor. Very overrated. read more

I have never written a review before , but feel compelled to do so. Saturday night my friend & I ate at Viaggo. First off, having to have a whole menu explained to you is a turn off. Then there was the one piece of dried out bread with oil, no butter in sight. Couldn't they leave a basket of bread on the table like other restaurants?? My friend ordered the ravioli with pork, and I ordered the paperdelle pasta. Mine was salty and tasted like something out of a jar, definitely not homemade. Aside from the sauce being generic, the pasta was like a piece of cardboard. I love al dente, but this was beyond. My friends ravioli was like a rock, she could barely cut it with a fork, much less a knife. We sent it back, when it came out, my friends was covered in oil. She barely touched it. The manager, or owner whoever it was came over to ask if it was now to our liking. We told him, mine was just ok and hers was so full of oil now, she could not eat it. His response was 'OH...but how were the spices" Really...he never offered us, a dessert or a coffee on the house, which he should have, since the meal was awful and the prices are high. He should have just acted like he cared. Save your money , stay home & buy a jar of Prego. This place has a long way to go, it falls very short. read more

A bit of a pretentious/snooty vibe. They don't accommodate simple substitutions/additions and don't split salads as appetizers, etc. The wait staff was rather subpar. Sorry but this place is not good enough to justify the prices. My 2 friends and I all agreed that the food wasn't bad but at 30 bucks an entree it should be really good. Also the place is noisy and is in a really ugly location and chairs not very comfortable. Had the rabbit and pancetta entree which for 36 bucks should have been better and come on put something on the side, vegetable, rice. The bread pudding dessert not moist enough and 11 bucks, sorry this is not Manhattan, not even Montclair! Friends didn't seem any more enthusiastic about their food, although I will say the octopus appetizer was very good, but that's not enough for me to return. Service was superior. Hand's down, fabulous. It is a strip mall space. Narrow and constrained. The noise level precluded any conversation. We came mid-week. There is a glass wall in front and no soft surfaces inside. It is neither welcoming or pretty in decor. All the food was beautifully plated. We would recommend the prix fixe option. The first two courses were as promised, and exactly right. Half portions. The main was a full serving. Lovely to have the option to enjoy different things. Sauces were pretty stiff, cold and not very flavorful. The proteins in the meal were spot on...I am not sure we will return Certainly not for dinner mid-week. Maybe early dinner or lunch. It's okay. Don't get all the hype about this place and I just don't get it. Menu was extremely limited and food was fair at best. People think because they throw Mario batelli's name around that they are eating in this fancy New York upscale restaurant. Get real you are in Wayne New Jersey. Had the beat something or other for an appetizer and needed the FBI to find the beats. The short ribs were on the bone which I love but no flavor. Deserts not worth the calories and place is extremely loud. The most impressive thing to me was their sign and logo. Not horrible, just not memorable and definitely doesn't live up to the hype. Trying to decide on where to go for birthday dinner...Nothing coming to mind...friend calls to wish happy birthday and mentions "Viaggio". So, "why not" I thought as they took reservations. PERFECT!!! This is not an inexpensive, every night type place as can easily hit $50 per person not counting tip. But it is BYO, which is great. Charred Octopus with apricot, tomatoes and beans was amazing. Focaccia very good. They were featuring boar rags that brought my son back to Florence, Italy. Bronzino was excellent with capers and olives. Chocolate olive oil cake with coconut gelato as well as meyer lemon gelato with granita were a great ending. BUT, Anthony our waiter was tremendous!!! He mentioned that he came from Cafe Matisse, which is a place we go on very special occasions ($$$$$$) - the waiters there are the best! BUT now, Viaggio has one of them. I don't even know where to start with this hidden gem in Wayne. Do not let the fact that this restaurant is in a shopping plaza deceive you. The atmosphere in this place alone would get my friends and I to come back. Even down the dishes that were chosen to bring food out on were beautiful. This is one of the best Italian restaurants in norther NJ. A new addition to a market saturated with Italian food, this place is a standout. Simple, not overdone with too much garlic, everything was excellent from the beet salad, heirloom tomato salad to the pasta and even desert! Amazing. We attended a private party last weekend at Viaggio's for an engagement party. We were blown away with how delicious everything was, from the passed around hor d'oeuvers to the to the salumi for starters. Then we were served Antipasti, which included calamari, roasted beets, heirloom tomato caprese and a bib lettuce salad. Next we had the Primi course of 3 different pastas, one pasta better than the next! Followed by our main course which you had the choice of either the Amish Chicken, Scallops, Piedmontese Tagliata, a steak entree, or the Salmon. It was all outrageous! We barely had room for dessert, but we made sure we sampled everything that was offered, it was exquisite. We've been to Viaggio's several times and have always enjoyed our meal. This evening, Viaggio shone like a shining star, it was the best ever! Not only was the food excellent, but the service and staff were extraordinary. It was such a pleasurable occasion. What a treat! We were a party of 6 had an 8 pm reservation and were seated promptly. All the appetizers were really great. I had the octopus with white beans fantastic others had the calamari great and a beet salad no different than any other beet salad. Everybody enjoying so far. Next was the bruschetta enough for the table to share with the different toppings just ok. At some point we asked for more bread they give one slice at a time the waiter said I didn't have time to heat it and wasn't fresh. Next we had 3 different pastas to share for the table all really very good. I thought the house made gnocchi was the stand out. So far everybody happy looking forward to the main course. Wow here's where the place took a nose dive off a cliff. Four of us had the chicken because of the record review and all the hype. Frist it's very much like a chicken dish I had in nyc where they put a foie gras under the breast skin witch is nice and crispy and was very good. Not so much at Viaggio none of us liked it that much and it's the only chicken dish on the menu. Other mains were the wild Boar which had the consistency of a dried out old pot roast and tasted like it, if it was mine I'd have sent it back. One had the steak dish and the person wasn't to crazy about that either. When we were done the waiter asked what we liked most, I volunteered that the appetizers and the pastas were great nobody else had anything to say Next we had a few olive oil cakes and coffees. The cakes came to the table with 2 cappuccinos we waited 10 minutes till I got the waiters attention to bring the other 4 coffees he said he was sorry I made a fresh pot, right. Look if you want to spend this kind of money go to Sette in Bernardsville. None of us would go back again. If chef Todd had to close in Carlstadt who's food was so good I don't this place will be around after the hype wears off. read more
