How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. 1. They have a lovely new front room that they won't let you sit in unless the rear room is full 2. Communal tables in the back room--no. 3. No menus. You have to go to the counter in the back room to order from the chalkboard. 4. No table service. You order in the back room, then order drinks at the bar in the front room, carrying your drinks back to your table each time. 5. There are no prices on the drink list (again, no actual menu). 6. They want your credit card as soon as you walk in the door before you even sit down. 7. Despite the "no service" policy, tipping is still expected. The food is good, although it all comes with their own "twist" on classic Louisiana cuisine, so nothing is quite as expected, and it is all a bit spicy, even the meatloaf. read more

Absolutely best dinner I've had in Austin. This is craft Cajun inspired dishes that rival the best of New Orleans. Not a huge menu but everything is spot on. I started with the gumbo. The chicken and rice were both perfectly cooked and the roux was clearly made by someone who knew what they were doing. I sat down at the picnic table and saw they had filê in a jar. The flavors blended perfectly with the holy Trinity. The main was slow roasted pork over rice with beans. By itself could be delicious but the extra touches of seasoning and perfect cooking made for an amazing experience. The staff is amazingly well trained and friendly. Haven't tried very many Cajun restaurants in austin so don't really have anything to compare this to. The restaurant itself is super cute and has a great ambience. Very going down the bayou in luxury vibes. The food was delicious and so flavorful! My boyfriend got a drink recommended by the bartender that was so strong but he said that's what he asked for. Opted for the weakest drink next haha For food we got the special dinner plate (ribs with potatoes), the salmon with rice, the jambalaya, and the side salad. Wowwww is all I can say. This place is tucked on the back part of the building where Dai Due is. First time here, and it did not disappoint. Their drinks were yummy! I tried the drink special (I forgot the name, sorry), but was very curious about their beet juice cocktails. Apparently they make their own beet juice if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, you would order with the hostess or at the bar and they'll seat you. I ordered the special of the day which was the pork chop and it was so delicious. Drooling, thinking of it now. My bf ordered the fried chicken thighs over rice and that was dang good too. We ordered a side of gumbo and fried potatoes to share. Definitely do not sleep on this place. Must try! read more

I'm amazed this place only has 4.7 stars - if I could, I'd give them a perfect 10! The food here is incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. It's easily one of the best spots I've eaten at in Austin. I tried the fried chicken over rice, along with some beignets and a cocktail - all of it was fantastic. The staff were exceptionally friendly, from the host to the bartenders. It's definitely become one of my favorite spots for lunch. We decided to come here from a recommendation that my brother saw on Reddit. When you walk in, you're greeted at a host stand where they guide you through the ordering process - you order at the stand, shift to the left to order a drink from the bar (choices of alcoholic or nonalcoholic), then grab a table to dine. As you finish, you go up to the end of the bar to cash out and pay. It's a cozy atmosphere with wooden tables and chairs, low hanging chandeliers, and ingredients lining the walls of the restaurant which makes it feel more homey. Staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. The bartender asks if it's your first time dining here and if you would like any recommendations or help with ordering your drink. We got 2 mocktails - the "light drizzle" with passion fruit, orange, and grenadine which was very refreshing and light then my brother's "beet & soda" which was had an incredibly strong beet flavor. We ordered family style and shared the daily special which was like a blackened fish jambalaya, the cochon de lait poboy, the fried chicken on rice, and the gumbo & fried boudin. The dishes here are incredible, we were all blown away by the flavor although it can be a touch too salty. But I think the sauces that came with each dish paired well with the rest of the ingredients and really helped bring it together. read more

Menu is seasonal and limited - the host knew the dishes inside and out. Seating is somewhat limited and maybe not the best for large groups. Food wise - amazing! I'm not a NOLA native by any means but just in general, the spices were THERE. The blackened catfish is a MUST order. Corn dogs were a pleasant surprise (breading is melt in your mouth soft ) and gumbo is so flavorful. Ambiance is typical new Austin style - kind of hipster, kind of bougie, very aesthetically pleasing. The meal we had tonight will be a hard one to forget. We got the dinner for 2 and split it amongst 3 of us. A fantastic spread and plenty of food. While I could go on and on about the meal and drinks (everything was incredible) the service and the staff were the true stars. From a warm welcome, to helping us take shelter inside from the upcoming onslaught of a summer thunderstorm, they were so kind and funny. At the end of our meal we were stranded having parked several blocks away and asked if a staff member happened to have an umbrella we could borrow. This is rapidly become one of my favorite restaurants pretty much anywhere. The crew has been amazing every time we've shown up. Even after just a couple of visits they remember our names and apparently have even shared with their peers-- we had at least one bartender say oh we know you! ;). The main menu rotates somewhat frequently and is always made with outstanding fresh select ingredients. Everything is pretty much farmed table even a lot of the cocktail ingredients from what I understand. There's space to indulge with their potatoes and there's also space for healthy options by being able to change what the meals served on top of. They even have fun inside jokes on the menu like their corn dogs. You'll have to ask whoever is helping you. I like this place enough I almost resisted submitting a review because I don't want it to get more crowded, I enjoy the fact that I can find a table, but it wouldn't be fair to the world to keep it a secret. I was suspicious of the 5-star average when I came across these guys on my trusty Austin Yelparator! But it's close to accurate. The food scene in Austin is dynamic, ever-changing, and exciting. The range of foods, cooking and serving styles, operating methods, spaces, attitudes are incredibly varied. Totally different and unique is this food scene that's been developing along with Austin over the last 15 years. Enter Vic and Als as a prime example. Now, if you would have told me that setting out to find the restaurant I would: 1. Have a hard time finding the place in afternoon traffic, u turning several times to find the place. 2, Would have to order at the counter 3, Sit in a smallish space 4. Not friggin' bad! One of my favorite cuisines in the world is Cajun/Creole food! It was a very interesting way to take orders, you take them at the front and pay at the front, you also pay for your bar tab at the front as well. They have a switching menu daily so it depends on what day you go. We went on a Saturday and we had red beans and rice, gumbo and I had myself some blackened catfish on top of salad/greens. It was very juicy and not dry. It was also very tasty. Great staff, cool outdoor area and indoor area as well. It's a bit small but it's the small places that sometimes pack the biggest punch with its service and food. I'd love to try the fried chicken on rice next time! read more

I really like this place! I actually think it's the perfect size for a restaurant: not too big and not too small. Good outdoor and indoor seating options. Good amount of staff to support the dinner rush. Two gender neutral bathrooms. Staff was really friendly and didn't hover, and still checked on customers regularly. Parking kind of sucks, though. Went for dinner on a Tues night around 7p and the lot is small and it was full. Makes sense considering the plaza has dai due as well. Managed to find parking at haymaker next door, which has a bigger lot, but they were pretty full too. Food was great. Daily special was sold out so we got two entrees and two sides to share between two ppl. I asked about entree portions and I was told they were generous. I wouldn't call them generous, but I think they were just right. My friend and I finished most of the food, but did take home small portions of what was left (half the beets and half the rice from the catfish). I have no complaints about the food. The beets weren't exactly to my liking bc they were too sour for me, but objectively there was nothing wrong with them. Potatoes were amazinggggg and we loved the entrees. We were warned the catfish was a little spicy, but tbh the fried chicken on salad was what I'd call "a little spicy" and the catfish on rice was spicier than that. Still good, though. Fried chicken was really really good. Seasoned well and it's the thigh so yay dark meat! When ordering entrees, you can choose to get it as a po boy, on rice, or on a bed of salad. The person who took our order recommended for us to get the chicken on salad and catfish on rice. Salad and rice were very flavorful, which I wasn't expecting. It was a pleasant surprise. I like that the rice and salad weren't there to just be fillers, but they actually contributed to the dishes overall. I think I would've liked the beets more if we'd ordered something that would've paired well with them since they kind of tasted pickled to me. I was so pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed my stop into this place. The menu is a southern Cajun twist, there's also happy hour specials. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and varying styles of bench seating and little cubby style seating along the back wall. This place made me reconsider every other 5 star that I've given to a restaurant. I had the most incredible dining experience here, literally, everything - from the food, decor, service, etc was top notch! From the minute we walked in, the staff here really cared that we had a great experience, from walking us through the menu and making great recommendations and being super accommodating due to the COVID situation. Eating here felt like home, and I could tell that the staff loved working here too. My friend and I split the dinner special (which was a fried pork dish with mashed potatoes) and a blackened catfish po-boy, both of which were delicious! They honestly had the best mashed potatoes that I've ever had in my entire life, and everything was so flavorful and had the perfect texture. I'm actually from a small South East Texas town outside of Beaumont where the owners are from so I found drink names like the " Winnie Martini" and "Port Neches Tea" amusing. The gumbo was great. Great food, great service, comfortable ambiance! Big fan of their happy hour prices! The gumbo is delicious so love to stop here during happy hour for a bowl. Food always comes out in under five min during happy hour. Corn dog is a hit as well, love the batter they use! Shrimp on the po boy tasted incredibly fresh and the bread was buttery. I love the ambiance, it's fun to look around at all the spices they have jarred and decorating the shelves. There are games to play as well. Ok before I get into the review, let me give the parking instructions because this place is hidden: Pull in as if you're going to The Pretty Kitty. It's literally right behind there. Ok, now on to the the inside: small, cozy and just comforting! The chandeliers give the place e so much of a classy vibe. You are surrounded by fresh vegetables and ingredients. They make most of their ingredients fresh, in house.... And you can definitely tell once you taste the food. Now on to the staff: they great you at the door and give you the full rundown on the place. They are super knowledgeable and friendly. As far as the food, super delicious!! I'll be honest, after looking at the pics, I wasn't sold on the food, but my taste buds proved me wrong! These people took their time with this! Trust me, they know what they're doing in the kitchen. Super cute interior with delicious drinks and food. Our group had the po boy, fried chicken and catfish special, along with boudin balls and potato salad. The potato salad is one of my favorites I have found and tastes just like my moms homemade recipe. Everything was delicious. The breading was light and the chicken tender and well seasoned. I appreciated that sauce was so flavorful without being too spicy! The drinks were super unique, refreshing and well made. The process could be improved. Everyone was nice and welcoming, but it was sort of confusing where to initially start a tab, and whether it was seat yourself. Ordering food at what seemed like the hostess stand backed up the entry way for people just arriving and people weren't sure if there was a line/what line to stand in and the lack of easily visible menus with details made the order line go slow because people had a lot of questions and couldn't easily make a decision before getting to the front of the line. read more

Really can't say enough about this place that others haven't mentioned, but wanted to highlight this side (?) salad. It's amazing and well thought out. I personally couldn't eat the whole thing.. it was a meal on its own. Could def split between two people if you're getting other food.. ... like the shrimp Po-Boy! Shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the bread was insane/fresh. My preference is to have less added Mayo considering the slaw, but hey.. it could have scraped it off. I'll know next time. I really liked fried chicken with beignets. Beignets were very soft and moist inside, and glazed sauce on chicken has little bit of spicy flavor, which I really liked. Drink called drizzle also tastes good with very fresh passion fruit flavor. Blackened catfish was moist, but bit too salty for me. And hope fancy coffee and tea has more strong coffee and black tea flavor. It has good amount of parking space at the back, so no worries on parking :-) read more

(Wrote this in November, got stressed about elections and completely forgot about posting!) We were lured in to try Vic & Al's by the promise of a free side with our "I Voted" stickers. Gumbo (the free side) was excellent. Five stars for this! Full of flavor, and accompanied with perfectly cooked rice. The container was filled to the brim. Catfish Po'boy entree was not served the traditional way. Instead, a whole piece of catfish was marinated, grilled and placed on what seemed to be a large hotdog type bun, then topped with very fresh cut veggies and spicy sauce. Presentation was lovely. Unfortunately the sauce overwhelmed the whole dish. It was all I could taste. I ended up scraping it off, which seemed a waste. Perhaps I should have ordered the fried chicken po'boy instead? I think the strong taste of this sauce would have paired well with the heavier, denser chicken meat. Catfish served with rice entree was beautifully plated. Here again, unfortunately, the same sauce overwhelmed the fish. Side of corn tasted like, well, corn. It came garnished with the same spicy sauce as the catfish. I would have preferred a different taste at this point. It wasn't a cheap lunch, even with the discount. Ingredients tasted really fresh. Presentation was absolutely the best out of all the takeout we've had so far. Staff were friendly. I've been to Vic and Al's 5+ times and always think it's rated too highly on Yelp. How can you go to a Cajun restaurant and the food be bland? Also, the hipster vibes from the workers are not cool, it always results in bad services. Specifically this past time, we ordered red beans and rice, gumbo, boudin and beignets. All super classic New Orleans style food. Red beans and rice: beans were dry Gumbo: no flavor Boudin: easily the worst fried boudin I've had, especially for the steep price. They can't seem to figure out a fried boudin recipe that works. They've made them into balls, spheres, etc but they either come out too fried or soft and mushy. Beignets: these were super good, the size is perfect along with the dough plus space inside the beignet. My friend also had fried chicken plate which was average. Too much breading. Fried fritters were solid. Everything is expensive here which makes average food frustrating. Again, this is a aggregate score from 5+ times here. read more
