I was seen immediately when I walked in despite it being mid-day on a Saturday. The tailor clearly knew what he was doing and was able to suggest solutions to help fix all of the issues I was worried about. I was very impressed by how quickly and expertly he made the necessary pins, marks, and suggestions. When I picked up the dress they had me try it to see whether more modifications were needed. It looked great, however a few dark marks had appeared on the dress since I dropped it off. To fix this, they got it dry cleaned within a few days. Overall it was a great experience!

The dress fit very well and really only needed about an inch or so hemmed at the bottom to keep it from dragging on the floor. The staff made a big deal about, well the tailor is very busy, you need an appt for a fitting, yada yada. The cost for a simple hem was $60, plus the time to go back in for an appt, and because it was only 3 weeks away, and extra $25 to rush it. What a scam! Needless to say I bought the dress, looked on Yelp and found Penfield Tailors. No appt necessary, I stopped in, tried the dress on, Bulent measured the dress and quoted $20 to do the hem and he would have it done next week. Lovely space, private dressing room (he even had a pair of heels in case they were needed) and he was friendly & relaxed. He even helped zip me lol. Fast forward, one week later, we stop in, the dress is ready. I tried it on with my heels and it was the perfect length (which means I won't trip on it when dancing). In addition to standard alterations, he has come up with solutions to some specific problems with pieces we brought in, for example fixing some small areas on a camel-hair coat where rough handling had removed the nap. You would never guess it to see the jacket after his repair. I believe he understands all there is to know about clothing, fabric, findings/accessories, and tailoring. Second time I wore them I knew I had to have the waist taken in - no belt can unnoticeably cinch in or oversized shirt hide a gap that big. I didn't have any previous experience with Ricky's, but I'm always in this part of town and this job didn't seem too difficult, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to try them out. They interacted with me as little as possible - the vibes I got from them had an overtone of 'you're wasting my time' - and their perfunctory approach concerned me. I tried on the pants for them and indicated how much I wanted the waist taken in, but the person helping me used pins to mark a point quite a bit shy of my preference. Even after showing him again how I'd like the waist to fit, I got the feeling that I was being ignored. When I returned to pick them up, it took me a while to catch someone's attention. I wasn't offered the opportunity to try on the pants there to confirm the fit (but I didn't ask, either). Again, the main objective seemed to be to get me out of there as quickly as possible. I tried on the pants at home. As I suspected the waist is still too big, but I can at least wear them now. The workmanship looks good, but if I decide to have them altered again I'm going to look elsewhere. Good points: The turn-around was amazingly fast - I hope they don't sacrifice sleep or fingers to maintain the pace. And they charged approximately nothing for the work (around $15).

It had 2 layers. They told me it would take 3 weeks. This brought me up until the day before the wedding. I started to get nervous and called to check in on my dress. (In their defense I shouldn't have waited so long) They told me to come in and it would be done. It was not finished when I got there. I went the next day and my mistake-I forgot to bring my shoes so I tried it on at home. They had only shortened 1 layer! I had to bring it in and have it remeasured and shortened. I was getting nervous as the wedding was approaching but they got it done. They did good work the second time, but I won't go back. I think they take on too much and it impedes their work and the organization of their place.

I have yet to find a place that is reliable and upfront with their prices, and was pleased when Twins was able to give me at least an ESTIMATE of the cost prior to showing up with the dress. I know hems on dresses like this are time consuming and I have no problem paying whatever it costs, but the lack of transparency is always problematic for me. They did a wonderful job with the dress - it looks great and cost $95 for a hem (this was a lot of fabric and two layered, FWIW) and a shoulder strap adjustment. I am happy with the results and the dress was ready in a week! I will be back for future alteration needs. It look like there was some vintage items, pants, blouses, and more that he has good comfort with. Thanks for the great experience!
