Don't be fouled by the outside. It doesn't look like much. It's a chinchorro (as we say in Puerto Rico; a hole in the wall as others might say. BUT, Authentic Puerto Rican food, well prepared and seasoned. The mofongo was homemade style! The service was quick, but pleasant and attentive. Discussing food, it is not fresh. The white rice tarted like it was reheated from like two days ago. The beans were watery and the sorullo was dry and hard. The deserts was dry and unflavored. This place does not serve fresh tasteful food. I'm so discussed that when I think about the food I ordered and the price my stomach turns upside down. Worst mofongo ever, looked nothing like the picture. it was like fried little pieces of plantain scooped up or old pieces. It was dark, salty and it was less than a cup served. I also had the chicken chicharon, it was pieces of drum sticks and Probally other chicken pieces chopped up and fried. Had to pick at it and separate the small pieces of cut bones. Not what i expected from a Puerto Rican restaurant. The arroz con gandules was mushy and not very flavorful the chicharrón de pollo was dry and had really sharp broken bones in it.. the one good part was the empanadas and alcapurria just a bit greasy but other than that pretty good. I had some empanadas from here & even the crust as delicious, so I had to come back for another, & see what else was on the menu. I had the sancocho & arroz grandules. My food was so fire. It was my first time having Puerto Rican soup. It was tasty. The waitress gave us coquito samples as we waited for our food. I'll definitely be back. My friend and I ate here for lunch while we were out exploring Biscayne National Park - it had been saved on our list as a great local place to try and so we stopped in. The restaurant is tucked into the corner of the building and very modest, and was exactly what we were looking for. I had the shrimp in garlic sauce with rice and beans, with tostones. If we had been staying closer in the area we would definitely have been eating here every day! The food was excellent and the service was great - everyone there was very nice. The place is no frills and looks a little run down, but that does not reflect on the flavor of the food. They also have some other traditional items like coquito and pasteles. Finally dined in for the first time after driving but the restaurant daily. The food was soooo good. I was extremely hungry so I ordered a pastele and sorullos as appetizers. Decided to give it a shot. The lady at the counter was excellent. She was extremely friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food was TERRIBLE. We ordered mofongo with pork chunks and rice with gandules. The mofongo tasted like old cooking oil. The chunks of chicharrón in the mofongo were hard to the point we couldn't bite down on them. The pork chunks were edible, however, had very little flavor. The rice with gandules tasted like dish soap. Best part of the meal was the Coco Rico coconut soda. Would not recommend! read more

Great restaurant for some downright Puerto Rican food. It is a small cafeteria style place in an old strip mall. The food was pretty legit. Carne frita was on point very flavorful and moist... I would've loved some sautéed onions on it though. The rice and beans were a bit bland... rice tasted like it was from a rice cooker and lacked some serious salt. However, the MOFONGO was amazing... it was seasoned with garlic and tiny bits of pork crackling... one of the best I've ever had! Prices were very reasonable too. If I gave a review only for our waitress, this restaurant would earn three stars. As for the food, it left me longing for my grandmother's cooking. True, it is hard to ever match abuelita's food anywhere - I'm sure most of us looking for a good home cooked meal feel that way more often than not. The food gets one star (perhaps two, but that's pushing it!) The "sorullitos de maiz" were the size of fingers in length and quite wide (the waitress did warn us), we ordered 5 and ate only two between three of us. They were not fresh at all, plus making them so big made them feel like they were all "masa". For my lunch I ordered - bacalaito, empanadilla de carne y taquito de jueyes (I don't know how to translate any of this). The bacalaito was chewy and too greasy - I can make a better one from Goya's powered mix at Publix. The empanadilla de carne was good, but empty - tortilla could have definitely held more meat. The taquito was not a taquito, it was an empanadilla, and it just didn't have the kiosko flavor that frituras have on the island - but I should have expected that, guess I just got my hopes up. My husband ordered Mofongo with salad and pork (this is my review on tasting his food) - The seasoning of the pork was good, the mofongo a little dry, but once we cut into the mofongo, the inside was a little more moist and had chicharron, so it gave every bite a welcomed salty-crunch. I don't want to end with an all negative review - the parcha (maracuya) juice was delicious. The menu said the juices were natural, but it was quite smooth, so it may as well have been from concentrate. Nevertheless, it was good and it quenched the thirst we carried from being outside in 100-degree heat. We ordered my son arroz con habichuelas (white rice and beans) and relleno de yuca (a yuca ball stuffed with ground meat) - He only ate the rice and we brought the beans and yuca home. Will update the review once I've tried those. So far, would I come back? No. But now we know, and we acknowledge how blessed we are to be able to enjoy a meal out. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Miami. I live in Colorado and have been coming here at least 10 years I think. I have been eating here since the very first year it opened which may be more than 10 years. They have the same two wonderfully attentive waitresses all these years! The food is made fresh to order ! I have never eaten anything here that I don't like and that is not made fresh! Granted sometimes the wait may be a little long but well worth it ! Today I had the pasteles and they were especially delicious! Every year before I go back to Demver, I make certain I have enough time to pick up a dozen alcupurrias to take with me on the plane. My wife and I just came down from Georgia to visit family and we stopped here to eat after a long drive. The food was very nasty, the food was microwaved. When they brought the food to the table and rellenos was frozen inside a d got outside. They took it back and then microwaved and try to serve it back to me. They should be ashame to serve Puerto Rican food like that. The place is modest but inviting. We ordered the Mofongo plain for $3.00 and it includes the classic crispy pork bits, you can add the broth on the side for $1 more which I recommend because it gives it a twist, anyway you can add it or just have it by itself. We also ordered a Bacalaito which is a similar to a fried empanada but used and it was very tasty but a bit greasy (I have a way of always press napkins against it to absorbed the oil) another thing we ordered was the Menudo soup which is a plate you find in Mexican Restaurants an it was very good, also had very good coffee, a strong espresso or Cuban maybe and a "cortadito" just the way it should be lots of coffee with just a bit of milk (up to almost half could be fine). Overall it was a great experience. The waiter/manager which is also the owner's sistwas alone in there serving tables but she was very polite and diligent. I recommend this restaurant as an authentic Puerto Rican experience. read more

The Mofongo falls apart like it's rice and tasted like straight fried pork oil. I asked for a copy of my receipt and didn't get it. I asked for a natural juice and then was told I was never charged for it, but how would I know, I don't have my receipt. Fooled me once shame on me, I won't be fooled again.
